I was reading Shelly’s Frankenstein and was struck by the extent to which the tale and the text were so wildly different from how they exist in the popular imagination.

I mentioned this to my wife along with my suspicion that the Bible was a lot like that. What’s written on the page and how we think about these stories and their lessons, are radically different from what we might have been taught or heard.

She suggested that I should probably actually read it before making such bold declarations. So I am.

I’ve started with Genesis and am reading front to back. I’m finishing Numbers now and have the goal of reading the entire volume this year.

I like this edition. The MEV does a nice job of fusing the meaning of the words in the original text, with modern usage, while still retaining some of the style of the King James. I’m using the margins for notes on everything I find surprising, interesting, or amusing. And I’m finding something that stuns me on almost every page.

The Bible is bonkers.

The stories are a wild mix of passages that read like Monty Python skits and petty atrocities where nobody (including The LORD) comes off well. It’s a delight to read but a perplexing source of theological or moral instruction.

(Update 12/17/2024: I've finished! And the above review stands. The Bible is pretty weird.)

I love all of the Journalling Bibles - they offer so much opportunity for reflection. Having grown up in the the suburbs of Sanderstead, writing original poetry and simple heartfelt commentaries on the Bible, I feel that my advancement spiritually would not have been possible without these therapeutic tools.

Each year I re-examine the love triangle, the drama triangle and the empowerment. triangle and see how best to avoid being placed in or stepping into those triangles, choosing instead empowerment. techniques.

A re-examination of the primal spiritual wound, brain development in utero, dna enhancement, dna disruption, angelic protection and persecution by malicious sons of God, ie demons, (JOB 1-2), and demonic harassment, including what we would term modern day techniques similar to Voice-2-Skull, and gang stalking by legions of demons, has opened my eyes up to the importance of contemporary interpretation of Scripture.

This was my first time to read through the Modern English Version and I really enjoyed it. This particular edition also includes some scripture art and lots of wide margins for taking notes or creating art. It's sturdy (hard bound) but not so oversize it's uncomfortable to hold.

My method for reading through the Bible: I choose a version that I haven't read before (or one I want to read through again) I start in three sections: Genesis (the beginning), Job (the beginning to the wisdom section), and Isaiah (the beginning after the wisdom section). I read around three chapters of Genesis, one wisdom, and one of the prophets a day. If I'm short on time I just read the first bit and the wisdom bit. Sometimes I miss for holidays or particularly busy seasons (I also have an app that I love that reads daily scripture and prayers to me on my phone). And I just...plow through. I don't finish in a year, usually it's more like 18 months. I mark with a colored pen system if I'm using a printed version and I highlight with notes if I'm using a digital version.
