The Endless War #2

Darkness Rising

Rate this book
Jasn wanted nothing more than to hunt the draasin and obtain vengeance for what he’d lost in the Endless War. Time spent in the mysterious barracks revealed depths to the war—and his abilities—that he had never imagined. As he debates whether to continue his education with Alena, he follows her into the depths of Rens where a surprising discovery changes both of their fates, and entwines them more than either desires.

Ciara returns from the waste changed, but her return is only a beginning. When her father demonstrates a powerful secret of his own, Ciara must once again leave her home on a journey for answers that will change not only her, but the fate of Rens and the future of the war.

I feel like this book is better in some ways to the first, with the editing and with its uniqueness. Granted, there are still times it gets real repetitive.
We also get the added POV of Alena, who, IMO, is a stronger and less annoying character than Ciara. I got bored with Ciara’s chapters here.

- Alena has to deal with Ifrit (why that name?) and Calan trying to kill draasin, while her ability to talk with them strengthens.
- Jasn meet again with Lachen and learns even more about Katya and her fate.
- Too many people STILL hold secrets from Jasn and Ciara, though the two EVENTUALLY AND FINALLY learn some thing. It was incredibly annoying. My frustration grew each time I read of such secrets. Hasn’t that time passed?
- Jasn’s healing power grows. I love seeing how that unfolds, especially as he helps so many others. I also like learning how it additionally helps people, like Wyatt. It makes me wonder what Ifrit will do with her new knowledge.
- Ciara’s test with hot liquid makes sense but was also super odd. I also thought it was odd for Jasn to say “Mama.”
- It was pretty cool to see why the shadow man walks again

If this was a trilogy I'd finish it off. But I don't know if I care enough to finish THREE more books.

If you like dragons, magic, and intrigue I highly recommend!

Alina and Jasn must set aside their difference to understand what is happening to the Drassin. Something is not right with them. Once they were a feared draconic creature, but now as their numbers dwindle and as Alina learns more from them she is starting to understand that there is a darkness in the world. A darkness that almost too Jasn but instead fending off that darkness he has created a connection to the light that could help Alina and Jasn understand more.

Ciara just wants to save her people. She has a connection to the Drassin that she does not understand. After somehow managing to call a Drassin and ride it, the Drassin drops her off far from the land and her home she is trying to save. There must be a reason why she was left there.

Will all come together to help ward off the darkness?

Well Done!

Solid pacing, building on the first adventure, opening new vistas and characters. Interestingly, while related, they do not read like a different series, but more like a history of the lands.

The character titles for each chapter lend an air of competency in the story telling, allowing for differing voices to surge to the front in the telling, adding a hint of complexity and depth many fictional characters lack.

Please consider this author HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Excellent book. I love that the author took his time developing the character connections and has slowly built the true conflict over the first two books. Highly recommend this series

A few new charaters in this Book 2 of the series. I find this a better book then the first because more is shown to us and you can understand more of what is truely going on. D.K. Holmberg is a great story teller and is able to keep you reading. Great Reading Everyone!

Great Read!

Darkness Rising by D K Holmberg takes us further into the fantasy world that the main characters-Jasn and Ciara-live in. It's chapters weave back and forth to show you their true nemesis starting to unfold with each new thing they learn, each magical teaching revealed, and each history lesson told to them. Readers will see and feel the before-now unthinkable questions they start asking themselves on their journey for knowledge, survival for their people, and revenge.

Whereas book one I had to struggle to get into, book two didn't seem to present me with that same issue. It had a wonderful rhythm to its flow. My only complaint would be that I wish each chapter altered from Jasn's experiences and then Ciara's experiences, as sometimes there would be three chapters in a row for one or the other and I would be anxious to see what was happening in the other's world.

Interesting storyline, just getting started if it doesn't bogged down into a formulaic pattern

Interesting storyline, just getting started if it doesn't bogged down into a formulaic pattern. Books still more editing ...some of the paragraphs jump around and you have to read back to understand and fill the gaps in the sequence of events.
