Now, "名探偵コナン 純黒の悪夢" is fun to read, and for anyone who has read and/or watched any of "名探偵コナン" manga/anime, it will be good to spend some time with beloved characters. However, "名探偵コナン 純黒の悪夢" is also a shallow book as they come, and as it happens with many written versions of movies, it shows that it is as difficult to translate from screen to page as the other way around.
The story of this book is based on one of the movies that come out every year in Japan in spring. In this case one of the members of the Black Organization has stolen some information about moles in their organization from the police. She runs away, but after Akai and Amuro try to catch her, she has an accident and loses her memory. Luckily for us, she falls into the hands of Conan and his friends Genta, Mitsuhiko and Ayumi and the spy from the Black Organization goes Ferris wheeling and darts shooting with them. All the while, the Black Organization members and the police are trying to find her.
Simple as they come, right? This is an action movie made into an action book. Shima doesn't get things complicated and goes for action, conversations, and more action. If you haven't ever read Conan, the story will be easy enough to read, but will leave you with the feeling of eating a highly calorific but hardly nourishing food. As with many light novels in Japanese, there is no character development, the conversations are easy to read, but also include a lot of repetition and shouting, and the descriptions are kept to a bare minimum, with just lots of things constantly happening, bombardment style. It never really becomes boring, but if you don't like Conan is kind of pointless. Related to this, this book doesn't go for the mystery and who-is-the-killer serving of Conan, but for the action one. I, for one, am more a fan of the first ones, so be aware of this if you decide to read the book.
Without having seen the movie, I found the plot of this story very interesting and learned many new words. The story features the black organisation and many popular characters, which was a main factor in me enjoying this book.
While the dialog was fairly easy to read, I really struggled with the action scenes at the beginning of the book and at the end. I realized that I don't possess the necessary vocabulary for car chases and had to skip some sentences unfortunately. However, I still really liked the suspense of thoses scenes.
