Alien Lovers #1

Planet Glecerus

Rate this book
The year is 2327. Earth, once strong, is now trying to recover from the devastation of the Great War. During the battle, millions of lives were lost and cities were destroyed. Needing to rebuild, the government turned to other planets. One day, a starship arrived from the planet of Glecerus. The aliens traded technology and medicine for willing humans to become mates to their people. Sebastian Cain is struggling to survive. His only option for a better life is to leave Earth. He volunteers to go to Glecerus. He's looking for a fresh start and the only family he has left, an older brother. But life on Glecerus takes some getting used to, and Sebastian must learn the customs before becoming a mate to a Glecerian male. High King Auden Q'Tal and Captain Regin Priq'aq are both interested in becoming Sebastian's mate. Instead of bidding on the human at auction, the aliens battle it out, and the winner gets to mark and claim Sebastian.

Meh.

I guess I liked it a little? IDK...I don't think it was ever discussed why so many of these Aliens want/need Human mates when evidently there are other Aliens and beings from different planets that would also fit the bill. Also, evidently this world had "pleasure clubs" that are very reminiscent of BDSM/Sex clubs and was that a thing carried over from Earth or is this an example of parallel evolution. No hint of why the Glecerans were humanoid, either. Or where the food & plants came from when everything moved underground. (The surface was described as a frozen wasteland, basically). Did it all come from the oft-mentioned "trade agreements"?

And I know it was a plot device to show how Auden felt he wasn't worthy of being Sebastian's mate, but Auden's son has had a Human mate for a DECADE - he should know how fragile humans are and unsuited they are to surviving the planet's surface...so having the "hunt" take place there made no sense at all. Plus, I thought, given the other competitions detailed, that the "competition" to win Sebastian would, you know, be competitive. We don't even get to see how that plays out except for who got to him first and then how Auden gives him to Regin. No competition drama, no excitement for the win.

Ugh, so much could have been done to expand this world-building to make the story better...I'm honestly a little disappointed. And the sex wasn't even all that interesting, kinky or different to make it worth the effort. I probably won't even read the rest of the series because there are so many better MPreg alien books out there if I need one for another challenge.

Now, I may have mentioned this before, but it bears repeating, just in case you missed it. I love alien abductions that result in happy ever afters, and I love series where some alien culture has an agreement (or contract) with one or more Earth governments about "supplying" them with mates. There have been a few series starring variations on this theme at Siren Publishing, and this newest one, ‘Alien Lovers’, looks very promising, in my opinion. It’s 2327, Earth has suffered a devastating global war, and needs help if humans are ever going to rebuild. It’s the reason for asking for outside help, and for pretty much accepting any aliens and their conditions that come along. Risky, but what can you do when your own stupidity almost exterminates your entire species? This first book kicks off the series with a bang, by adding two more of my favorite tropes: a three-way relationship (even though this is a case of “shared” mate, not a true triad) and some almost-surprise mpreg. What more could I ask for?

So.

Another case of betrayed expectations.

No world building. The setting was described just enough to feed the erotic fantasy tropes (alpha alien males, all-male society, mpreg, self-lubricating cocks etc), not enough to explore the world or make it the least bit interesting. The discrepancies and missed opportunities piled up so high I spent the second half of the book rolling my eyes on almost every paragraph.

The human MC was of the TSTL (my least favorite) variety. He applied to go to an alien world in hopes of again meeting his brother who went off-world a decade before. The only way to get to the planet Glacerus is by applying to become a mate of one of its inhabitants or the inhabitants of planets Glacerus has a trading alliance with. He had an unspecified amount of time (while he waited for his application to be approved) to read a manual on what he needs to expect from the new planet and its people. And he didn't touch it. He skimmed it. He came there absolutely ignorant of anything relevant, and everyone around him is like "aw shucks". That does not only go against any and all common sense, that is plain suicidal.

The rest of the book was equally superficial and uninteresting. I barely managed to finish it.

This could have been something really interesting. There were parts of this my inner sci-fi freak really enjoyed. But there were also lots of little niggles that made me wonder.

The author really has a good thing going here. I of course love the whole, traded for mates thing. But then, it has to make sense for these beings to want to trade at all doesn’t it? I kinda got the feeling that everything on their planet is just A-okay and therefore the whole needing to fly in “mates” didn’t quite let me think of “need”? Maybe the humans are a “delicacy” now?

Also, I’m all for a good threesome but again, it has to be done right. I got super excited when at first sight Regin and Sebastian showed a strong interest in one another. So when Auden made his entry I was kinda – “NO! Bad High King! Sabastian belongs to Regin!” I have to admit that I didn’t like the dynamics between the three of them.

The story had so much potential for branching out into a great many good things, the author even touched on a few directly but then just let it go after mentioning it.

All and all, I did enjoy the story even though it might not sound like it. I just see ‘more’ and I think the author sold herself short here.

In the mood for Aliens need Mates romance, I can across this fun series.

This first book in the series sets the tone but it isn't my favorite as the I can never get over the fact that the hero doesn't read the book on the culture he is marrying into and also never suggests that the book should be redone as a lot of the men don't read it.

However, I had fun while reading this escapist romance.

I'm always fascinated by science fiction stories particularly involving other worlds and alien species. It's always remarkable to me how the authors can create such interesting worlds. I wanted to read 'Planet Glecerus' the instant I read a friend's review and I have previously enjoyed this author's work.

Sebastian has no one on Earth left. His brother Jason went with the Glecerians ten years prior which enabled Sebastian and his family to be taken care of. Now both his parents are dead, so he volunteered to go to Glecerus to mate with an alien. He didn't bother reading the thousand page manual he'd been given when he volunteered but, seriously, what were these people thinking? Men don't read manuals!! Needless to say, it caused some difficulties in the beginning.

Stepping onto the spaceship Sebastian is dumbfounded when he gets his first glimpse of a Glecerian. Seemingly without fear Sebastian walks right up to him and gets lost within his eyes. Unbeknownst to Sebastian this is Captain Regin Priq'aq and the alien has already decided to bid upon him at auction and take him for his mate. Regin has never seen anyone as beautiful as Sebastian and he wants him, wants to mark him, and mate him.

Sebastian is stunned to discover, once he reaches Glecerus, that because his brother Jason is mated to a member of the royal family, Sebastian is now considered royalty and can not be bid on. The males who wish to mate with Sebastian will have to compete for him. The problem is that Sebastian is drawn to both Regin and Auden, the High King. I'm not so sure I liked the way the competition was done. I'd have been just as scared as Sebastien was.

Oh there were some twists and turns, a pregnancy, and a baby. What more could I ask for? A very good beginning to a series I'm definitely looking forward to more of.

I did not care for Sebastian. He really wasn't interested in getting a mate, just trying to get to his brother who had left for the Planet ten years earlier. He had such a downer attitude and did nothing to try to adapt and learn about his new home. Sebastian was lonely after his parents died, but he didn't care to have a romantic partner of any kind, even to gain a family. Now both Auden and Regen were lonely, wanted a mate, and were willing to share Sebastian since he was attracted to both of them and did not want to choose. Auden and Regen were not lovers so this menage was not a complete three-way.

Most of the book was spent on world building and the mate auction process. Sebastian's brother was married to Auden's son and lived in the same palace. Sebastion, Auden and Regen did not get together until the end, and then it was sex and instant mpreg. There was little relationship development amongst the three even though the story gave them time. There were no displays of affection nor emotional communication. They all just went through the mechanical motions of living. It wasn't until Sebastian was being prepared for an emergency cesarean, that the trio professed their love for each other. But at that point, it was too little too late to get that warm comfy feel good. Sebastian still acted weird even at the end of the book. He acted too surprised and clueless with being a new father - maybe he was mentally challenged? Once again, no warm comfy feelings of new family and togetherness.

I love the trope of mail order bride/groom. That is sort of what this is - earth boy signs on to be an alien's mate. Being on a strange planet is cool and, at times, dangerous. Aliens are hot as hell. No angst, very sweet really --- I could only wish for harsher elements that made my emotions really come out. Everyone is just so very, very nice. Enjoyed it - and wavered on stars. In the end the 4th star is because I want to read the next one. Like stat.

It's 4.5 stars for the world building itself. I really liked it. Well done. But... I don't really feel the connection between Sebastian and the 2 other alpha males. And I got second lead syndrome. This is truly not good. I loved Regin more than Auden. It's not supposed to be this way. I do like the not complete three-way. This is like M/F/M. The males in this story do not get involved with each other. It works fine with me. I'm still dealing with menage books. That's on me. I'm just disappointed that I don't really care for Sebastian. :(

I hope I feel a lot better with Georgie's book next. :)

This was a hoot, an absolute delight, in fact it was so good, I couldn't put it down till I finished! I loved this creative, well thought out history and universe the author created. Where humans volunteer to be mated with an alien in exchange for relief and care for families on a devestated Earth. I loved the touch of humor with Sebastian's ignorance, volunteering for mating, but never read the manual. What a hoot! Definitely going to read more of this series.

I'm finding out more and more that I like reading about a tragedy. The more and more I read books like Planet Glecerus - where there's so much potential for tragedy that isn't realized - the more and more I come to accept this and get disappointed when it's not fulfilled.
Still, this book was well written, with well established and likable characters and a decent plot. It's a nice short read if that's what you're looking for.
Spoiler Warning from Here on Out.
I HATE love triangles. And I especially hate them when they end the way the one in this book did - with everyone getting a happily ever after. Don't get me wrong, I don't menage a trios - when they are well established. And they weren't here. Black didn't give any hints that a menage a trios was possible until the climax. And she definitely didn't establish that the King (can't remember his name to save my life, sorry) would be okay with that. So, in the end, this menage a trios came across as a deus ex machina and I really don't like it when storytellers use those either.
Still, this book wasn't awful. I'm willing to give O. Black another shot but it seems like love triangles are a popular theme in her stories so this may not last long.

All the characters are so one dimensional. The writing is also so bad it's like I'm reading a story from children book. Maybe it's just me who didn't know what to expect so I'm so surprised all I got is.....this. Interesting premises though the excuse to make the pairing into menage is ridiculous. Why not make menage into something natural within the universe?

Awesome Read

I have read this one more than once. This entire series is captivating and unique. With this being the first book in a new series there’s a ton of background characters and world building but I think I still would have liked seeing more of the High King (Auden’s) “true personality.”

Good, but I'm more excited about the books to come

This war a fun story, and an interesting premise. My issue with this book was that I cared more about side characters like Aaron and Georgie more than I did about Sebastian.

1,75 estrellas // bueno, es lo que es, no me ha encantado mucho la construcción del mundo, pero sobretodo he tenido problema con lo incongruente que es el protagonista y la química tan forzada y con tan poco sentido que tiene con los dos aliens

This was enjoyable, but a bit too predictable and full of cliches.
It didn’t make matters better that Sebastian was rather annoying.

Planet Glecerus - 3.5 Stars

The story line was very good, interesting and also with some surprises along the way.

One thing I always admire and love about Olivia Black's books is the way she makes me care for the side characters as much as the main one. She has done this with each series and I've read them all, regardless if I've posted a review or not. I'm a hard-core fan of Olivia Black :)

In Planet Glecerus I enjoy reading about Sebastian, the way he struggle to get into the program, how he wanted to find his brother that was send to Glecerus years before. I also enjoy the take on new things and how "human" he was by not reading the thick manual. I'd have probably done the same thing. Good for him, there was someone on the ship that new that damn thing by heart hahahaha

How Regin meet him was pretty great. High King Auden's intro was much fun with mistakes from Sebastian's part. It was fun to read how he made a little fool of himself and all that.

As usual, Olivia it's pretty great with the sexy scenes and they are hot. The description it's not overly done and the feelings are right in there. Also, the surprises after the joining of the mates was... well... a surprise hahahaha

It was a book that was not without its flaws but I all in all liked it.

I want to clarify that when I say flaws, I mean that in some points of the book I felt a disconnection with the story and more interest in the side characters. If this was how Olivia wanted it done, she succeeded, for sure.

I’ll be following this series for sure. I want to see what happen with that... *shuts up* Ok, no spoilers. Read the novel and you will find that there is more fun to it that you can imagine.

I am quite biased about this book.
The setting of the story on the planet Glecerus is awkward, to put it mildly. The culture, customs and regulations as well as the behavior of its people are quite strange and very often make no sense. The aliens come to earth in their spaceship, but on their planet they can only travel by boat?? They mate with humans who then become pregnant with their children?? Really? So many things do not make sense here, which bothered me a lot during reading.
On the other hand, there is the story of Sebastian, who leaves earth and travels to Glecerus where he hopes to reunite with his brother after several years apart. He falls in love with 2 males from the planet, one being the high king. The question, who he would choose as his mate kept me entertained and interested and let me finish the book.
From time to time the emotions and dreams of the humans who came to this world were really wonderful, unfortunately often followed by another ridiculous rule, like Sebastian being able to talk to almost everyone in the whole kingdom but strictly prohibited to greet his own brother??? It felt wrong and not real. Also the end was not really convincing.

So the book had some really nice ideas and moments, but honestly left me a little bit disappointed at the end.
3 stars and some mixed emotions for me.

I did have trepidation on reading this. Mostly because I really did not enjoy Ms Black's Silver Bullet series at all. So I was pleasantly surprised.

However, I would have enjoyed more details on HOW this threesome was going to work. Regin being secondary mate means he doesn't share the bed with Auden and Sebastian but has his own room. And once they get to mating, Regin is sucking/blowing but no penetration... or perhaps that was 'behind the scenes' cus its the next day when they are actually alone that we see Regin get some behind time.

The close this down, we jump 5 months There's a brief mention of them all sharing a bed by now but no details. I'd have to assume that they are sharing full time bed time and sexy times but alas we weren't LED there.
