David Walliams is an actor and writer best known for his work with Matt Lucas in the multi-award-winning sketch show Little Britain. His debut children's novel, The Boy in the Dress, was published in 2008 to unanimous critical acclaim and he has since developed a reputation as a natural successor to Roald Dahl.
This was a really cute kids book. The main character has a pet snake and bring it to school for pet day. The acceptance she finds after initial fears is heartwarming. Would be a great addition to any tiny humans library.
It's bring your pet to school day. Everyone brings in their pets, there's dogs, cats, fish and tortoises. But Miranda is different and she brings in her giant pet snake. David Walliams always writes fun books and this is a fun short book. Wonderful illustrations
This one in particular is my second title by David Walliams and it was just as fun as my first title of his, Blob. Cute sharp illustrations alongside an innocent and silly but witty plot tend to make me very happy. Another plus point is that they can be read in a short span of 5-10 mins. Am quite glad to have found another writer in the genre of children's fiction I enjoy reading.
I loved reading this to my daughter. She found the story really funny. The best part in the book for Lottie is how many things you can do with a snake! She liked the snake climbing frame.
Walliams' sense of humor can be hit or miss. This one wasn't as ... well, mean as The First Hippo on the Moon, but I didn't like it as much as Geronimo - The Penguin Who Thought He Could Fly. And if I'm looking for a dark touch to my picture book humor, I like the Hat trilogy by Jon Klassen or Pardon Me! better. Still, this one had its good points too. I like the variety of pets shown here, and there's always something a little satisfying about Trunchbull-esque authority figures getting a comeuppance. So, I'm splitting the difference at 3 stars.
There’s a snake in my school is a sweet and charming story about a girl who brings her snake into school for ‘bring your pet to school day.’ When the head mistress takes the snake away because she does not like animals, she gets her comeuppance as the snake eventually eats her. The illustrations by Tony Ross add a lot to the story as the expressions on the characters faces can easily be seen, helping younger children to understand the emotion. The book is clever in the way that it describes the way the children play with the snake and how the snake teaches them letters and numbers and the illustrations really show this. The book has an underlying message that you should be kind to all animals as they are amazing and deserve to be cared for. I feel this is a book that many children will love and find fun and intriguing.
First-grader couldn't have cared less but ended up listening since he was sitting next to me, and at the page that showed the reactions of other animals, he was laughing out loud.
This was our first David Walliams book, and I wasn't completely impressed, but the goal was to keep showing the first-grader that there can be also other good books than Captain Underpants and the children's book about periodic table. Mission accomplished, and we will also read the other 3 books that I got from library.
By the way, the target audience would have given four stars, but I hope things can still get better.
Lovely written and beautifully illustrated this book is a perfect reading for 4+ DW's fans. Penelope is a school girl with a rather peculiar pet called Miranda. On bring your pet to school day, their headteacher who can't stand animals, takes away all the pets and locks them in the lost property cupboard. Things take a surprising turn and everything ends up on a high note. Being neither too dark, nor too complicated for the young readers (with accesible vocabulary) I highly recommend this story.
Perushauskaa kauraa David Walliamsilta.
Good illustrations and as far as I'm concerned anyone who is mean to animals deserves whatever they get so it's getting an extra star for that and for letting people know it is okay to be unique
Otherwise this is really just an okay story, there is a lot of lists of what the snake did but not a lot else. Using the snake to teach numbers and letters is a good way to get a bit of education in the story.
Miss 6 enjoys all things David Walliams and liked listening to this as an audiobook.
Miss 6 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
A mean headteacher, a bring your pet to school day, and the imaginings of a friendly snake. Story was a bit predictable but I'm sure young children would enjoy it. I liked the illustrations by Tony Ross, they reminded me of Quentin Blake's illustrations.
