After reading 'A Necessary Kill' (book 5 and Kindle Scout Winner), I was honored to become a member of Mr. Sumner's VIP fan club. As such, I was provided with an advanced copy to provide an honest review.
This is an International Thriller.
Adrian has found himself in some pretty unusual situations before but, the one he is in now certainly is unique. He is now among the cream of the crop of his profession but at a cost that is paving his road to Hell.
As with the other books in this series, there is plenty of action. It seems just as Adrian gets out of one mess, his mouth is getting him into another. I loved this book and I'm sure many other fans of Adrian Hell will too.
Warning: This is for Mature Audiences due to Graphic Violence, Adult Language, and hints of Sexual Situations.
The story of Adrian Hell takes a bit of a twist in this instalment of the series. After being sentenced to be given the lethal injection for killing the President, Adrian was rescued by the legendary Order of Sabbah, who substituted the chemicals so he survived. He's given a new name and a new life, but has to act as a hitman for the Order in return, with no reason given for the targets he's given to kill. His questioning of this gets Adrian in trouble, and he starts doubting whether he's better off in his new life or dead. This book is a great story, with a slightly more chilled vibe to it after the tense, driving pace of the last two books. The writing is excellent, and the characters really bring the story to life. I highly recommend the Adrian Hell books to anyone who likes action, adventure, thrillers or just wants something really engaging to read. I would just caution that they are quite violent, so they're not suitable for young readers, but it's always in context and not overly excessive.
When you wake up after you are suppose to be dead, what could happen next? Adrian Hell is about to find out and he will not be happy with the road he is about to take. He is in a new life with an unlimited credit card and can go any place in the world as long as he is available when the boss calls him. Adrian is now and assassin and very good at it. He wants to do the right thing and not take anyone out unless they deserve it. But that is not his decision and he has trouble learning that. Be sure to read this fast moving story with lots of bodies along the way.
As with two previous books that I have read from this author, this was also a fast-paced thriller from start to finish. However, some of the exploits that Adrian engages in and accomplishes seem very improbable... for example, taking on and killing 7-8 well armed people with an almost completely useless (cast) right hand and serious head injury plus badly damaged left hand. Appears like fantasy.
Wow, things are only getting better and more exciting the farther we go into this series. “Good Intentions” is the sixth audiobook in the Adrian Hell series authored by James P. Sumner while the Audible edition is narrated by Gary Bennett. Both individuals resonate quite well with me when it comes to stories in the action thriller genre. There is intrigue, mystery, plenty of fighting and even a man with a moral conscience whose profession is that of an assassin. Could the series have been closed out during the previous audiobook? Sure, but it would not have been long before we would be wanting more of our favorite action hero, Adrian Hell. Even with the previous book being such a rollercoaster ride of both action and emotions, this latest in the series keeps the momentum going and there are many new and exciting facets of this character we get to observe along the way. I have to say, I continue to recommend this series and book six surely keeps the pedal to the metal.
The story opens in a rather unique way. It should not be a surprise that in the last audiobook, Mr. Hell was not going to get out of the situation alive. Yet, as with all great action figures, he manages to awake in a strange location, under stranger circumstances, while finding himself surrounded by some unique individuals. As only Adrian can say, “It is nice not being dead.”, and I would have to agree. Here our main character is inaugurated into a new and mysterious order where only the best of the best is recruited. In many ways, one begins to believe that Adrian may have been better off dead than alive. His relationship between himself and his new management is like mixing water with oil and setting it on fire, it is nearly impossible no matter how hard one tries. Mr. Hell has his own moral compass when it comes to performing his jobs, yet the new organization is asking him to assassinate people without reason or at least providing this to him. This greatly annoys Adrian, and he tries to work with his new employers to do things his way, without success.
I found the author did a wonderful job of using descriptive writing to provide a detailed picture of the surrounds. I found the sprinkled in backstory items a welcome surprise as it is always good to continue to know more about Mr. Hell. The audiobook’s narration only helps to emphases the story’s scenes and action. With the event of 4/17 being in the past, much of the world is trying to get back to more normal activity, and that includes both people intent on doing good and evil. Adrian is sent to help relieve the world of all the bad and by doing so possibly usher in a new world order. Adrian needs to better understand the actions of his employer and if their activities are for the good of all or just them. With the new Adrian alive and the old one dead, I was somewhat surprised that he was not given some form of plastic surgery in the event he ran into some of his old acquaintances. Instead, he must dodge security cameras and often take the long way around to not be discovered.
Why does Adrian not just run away? That is a great question. He has been implanted with a device that can be used for tracking and killing if such measures are required. If he runs, he is dead. Even with all his technical knowledge, he is unable to override this new collar and if he tries, he is a dead man. Again, with all his previous ties to Tory and Josh, he now has to completely fend for himself and do what he is told, or he will be the one on the other end of an assassin’s gun. To make matters even worse, as Adrian is performing his new role, he seems to always be running into GlobalTech technology and people, but why? This desire for information puts Mr. Hell on the wrong side of nearly everyone, and this is one task that he will not be able to complete alone. Even with the addition of some new colleagues, we often hear him asking, “What would Josh Do” or more simply put, WWJD. The audiobook has a good amount of humor, emotional events, and tension which makes it a perfect additional to the action thriller genre.
Gary Bennett is such a wonderful narrator in so many ways, and I can say that I have never been disappointed with any of his works. The audio is always highly professional with little to no audio patches. The characters are continuously narrated with the proper voices, even when this involves over six books currently in the series. The pacing shows and the use of inflection displays the narrators understanding of the material and with such a smooth voice as Mr. Bennett’s, it seems to really fit the main character. Another wonderful addition to his narrating career.
For parents and younger audiences, this audiobook, and the series, is geared towards mature listeners. Even though it could be enjoyed by nearly everyone, it does contain a solid amount of both adult themes and language. There is also a high content of graphic violence which may not be appropriate for younger listeners.
In summary, if you like action and thrillers, you cannot go wrong with the series. Adrian continues to surprise and innovate over the many audiobooks, and I think that is for the better. The narration is solid and clean while the writing is enjoyable and picturesque. This audiobook in the series shows a very different Mr. Hell, and I look forward to is continued adventures.
Adrian Hell fresh from his execution, is back!! The Order arranged a fake execution and now they own him. With a new luxury life style, with only three rules can Adrian play nice, of course not!! Rebelling against the Order is a dangerous choice, especially with an explosive tracker in your neck. Good book as usual, although not the usual Hell outcome, but with a nice set up for the next one.
I was blown away by the ending. But I will not give it away. Just read the book. If you love this character like I do just read the book! Great book. I look forward to the next one.
I knew when A Necessary Kill finished the way it did, this one would start with a bang and it sure did. Sumner starts it right off throwing Adrian into the weeds. The secretive and mysterious group of assassins he joins only has a few rules but Adrian just can’t seem to find it in himself to follow them to a T.
The story itself was one of the best in the series. Adrian was forced into unique and interesting situations, a few times even I thought “I don’t know if he’s going to make it out of this!” Good Intentions has all of the things that I loved about the other Adrian Hell books with the added shadow organization that can go anywhere and do anything.
This one is difficult to review without any spoilers and ends on another slight cliffhanger – so talking about anything would ruin A Necessary Kill or the potential next book – so I’ll just say that I really enjoyed this one. Sumner found a gear and just mashed the accelerator throughout this one making it one of the most interesting books in the series.
Gary Bennett seems to just know how to become these covert assassin types – every time I listen to one of these stories performed by him I feel like I’m no longer listening to a book but listening to the stories from someone I know personally. Gary can bring these stories to life AND add some life/realism to them both the stories and characters. And when you combine that with the insanely paced books that Sumner is putting out where it feels like I need to pause them to give myself a break, let alone give Adrian one… and you’ve got another winner.
For the supposed best assassin whoever lived Adrian makes numerous mistakes time and time again. Just stupid stuff forgetting he’s being tracked via GPS that’s implanted in his skin. Shooting his arch nemesis in the bulletproof vest, then shooting five other people in the head and not going back and killing his arch nemesis. Like why? Or knocking out five armed men in an elevator, then taking a guns, no extra clip, and then being surprised when the elevator doors open at the top floor and there’s 5 Armed men in front of him. So he just puts down the gun. Instead of at hung them by surprise and shooting everybody in front of him. Why Go through the trouble of a huge fight and taking a gun if you’re just gonna put it down? It’s just so stupid and just dumb dumb stuff like that. The book’s are good for passing time but that’s about it.
Another great read. Action packed with lots of twists and turns. It is almost impossible to put the book down. I have read the series in order and having thoroughly enjoyed each book I will now start on book number 7, Thicker Than Blood. A big thank you to the author James P Sumner and from me another well deserved 5 Stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
The Adrian Hell series has been great, but it is becoming a tad monotonous and variation on a theme….will move on to number 7. After reading some alternatives on my list as 6 in a row is not fair to the author..
Poor Adrian Hell. One bad move after another, one dead person, two, three, four and the count goes on. Next assassination is going to be the worst of all the others combined.
I think out of all the Adrian Hell books This was my least favorite. Not because of the writing, the plot, or grammatical errors. Just because finding like seeing Adrian in a position he can't seem to get out of. I know I hate the feeling of being trapped and that's gotta be how Adrian feels. And his next assignment...I seen it coming. How's he gonna handle this? Can't wait to find out.
A page turning thrill a minute ride with our favorite assassin. Sumner pulls out all the stops on this one. It definitely deserves the five stars I need it. I need more so bring it on!
Another ride along the Adrian Hell trail, with intense action and larger than life characters! If you like action books you definitely need to read all books in this series! Adrian has executed the president and is put to death, but awakes in unknown place, still breathing. The people who put him there want him as an assassin, but their reasons do not satisfy our hero's beliefs. As he fights against his new 'boss', there are people around who want to help, this story explains how this part of his life goes.Another great read, awaiting to see what happens next.....
So many holes in this story but I kept reading since I'm a big Adrian Hell fan. Also not too pleased with the ending but I'm sure I'll read the next installment.
Believed to be dead, Adrian Hell is living under a new name as a member of The Order of Sabbah -- a secret cabal of powerful people who work to change the world to their vision through the use of assassins. Brought into The Order somewhat reluctantly, Adrian soon has issues with the leadership and the rules (no surprises here). Unfortunately, he has no way out and must do as ordered. The longer he works for the group, the more he distrusts their motives. When a fellow assassin comes to him for help with a hit, it sets off a chain of events that will leave Adrian (and the reader) stunned.
Again told in the first person, this novel brings the reader even deeper into Adrian's thoughts, showing his humor and his vulnerability. This is a side to Adrian we've never seen before. Along with the requisite body count, new characters, and rising levels of mayhem, this is the set-up of things to come: a contract hit that will force Adrian into the ultimate life-or-death decision. Bring on Book 7!
