Her father and half sister Laura (a former Antichrist with a grudge) have teamed up, for what sinister purpose Betsy can't imagine. Meanwhile, Betsy's marriage is on the rocks. Not sure what happened to this series, but it used to be one of my favorites. Now, not so much (or even close). Even though there is one more book after this one (the series ends at book 15) I don't think i'll be reading it. After all, this one was a huge disappointment for me.

Book 14, the next to the last book in the Undead series. Where has all the time gone? I did a COMPLETE reread, novels and all novellas, in preparation for this one. And I have to say, I can’t think of a series that needed it more. Because Betsy and the gang’s lives have been crazy. It has been a wild ride, but I have to say that I appreciate when an author at least makes the attempt to leave in good time and with a plan. We may even find all that flailing had a purpose, and come to think of it, when it concerns Betsy, that should be the least surprising,

While the author, and Betsy, might have floundered a bit the past few books, I think we’ve all finally settled in and it is coming together. It look like it is going to be a really strong finish. Betsy has finally taken up her mantles with some purpose, and while there is the requisite snarking, bitching, and whining, it is all working out. Hell is being run by committee and frankly, I can’t think of anything more hellish than that.

There are trials, and tribulations, weird babies, a depressed zombie (who maybe doesn’t have to be so depressed…squee?!?!), a mean priest, contretemps between our devoted heroine and hero, and family feuds. Seriously, this book gave me all the warm fuzzies that I have been missing the past few books. It almost makes me wish that it didn’t have to end, but then I remember – part of what makes it so great is that there is obviously a clear and concise ending coming up.

Seriously, I can’t even express how much I enjoyed this book.Yes, Betsy is still the vain, vapid, snarky, and reluctant ruler we have come to love, but she is also the grown up version I have been expecting for so many books. The one I never could quite figure out why we weren’t getting.

One more book to go and now I can’t wait to see how Davidson wraps it up. If you’ve gone off this series, now might be the time to jump back in…or maybe wait til the finale comes out next year. I can’t quite decide, but Betsy and the gang are back on track and it looks we might have an epic showdown/wrap up complete with out favorite loveable undead characters, dare I pray Boo the Vampire slayer?, werewolves, mermaids, and of course, the devil and her daughter.

Good times and 4 stars from me.

English Review

When Betsy goes to hell, she takes Tina and Marc with her. They find Cathie, the father of Marcus and the Ant for a meeting where the one Betsy presents the 10 new commandments to them. When she returns to the mansion after receiving a text from Sinclair, she realizes that she was gone for two weeks and that her sister wants to prove her existence (and therefore that of all vampires) in the world. Moreover, Sinclair is annoyed that she does not want him to rule Hell with her.

In short, there is a lot going on in the Betsy life as usual (and I have not told you everything). What change here is to see her take the lead. She actually rules Hell and takes decisions alone even though she has all her support team. This does not prevent her from being as always funny!

There were a few volumes that I had found a little worse but there, I really found what I love about this series. It remains to wait for the next book which will also be the last of the series.

UNDEAD AND UNFORGIVEN is yet another wild and crazy entry in the hilarious and busy Undead series. This being the second last book in the series means there is really no slowing down for a breath in the story. I loved every crazy page of this book and I really want to know just where this story is going and how it's going to end because I haven't a clue. With some books I may count that as a negative but there's just so much gosh darn charm and silliness that I am simply enjoying the ride wherever it may go. In UNDEAD AND UNFORGIVEN Hell is being run by committee with meetings and agendas. Hell has gotten truly evil under Betsy's rule.

I loved the way Betsy tries to change Hell in her own quirky way with random additions to the rule book and enforcing a Hell mentorship of sorts. Betsy is vain (hello shoe obsession), reluctant to rule, whiny, and snarky. In anyone else I'd use those traits to point out why I don't like a character but Betsy has reasons for her whines and snark and hey everyone needs an obsession. She comes off as so likable and gun-ho about surviving and helping her friends that I really like her. Aside from Betsy who continues to be hellishly awesome and keeps her obsession with shoes strong the cast of secondary characters are around to add some more zany flair to the story. The cast of characters includes a depressed zombie, an Anti-Christ with an evil agenda, a mean priest, weird babies, and various denzions of Hell, and more!

UNDEAD AND UNFORGIVEN sets up the action and craziness that I assume will happen in the last book really well and I can't wait to see how Betsy and friends survive this last adventure.

Not as bad as I expected, not bad for a free library book. I still wouldn't be buying these books anymore, but this one wasn't too annoying, not like a couple a few books back. There was an extremely tasteless comment about Joan Rivers' death that I didn't appreciate. And the back and forth with Betsy's grammar makes me nuts, is she smart or dumb? Sometimes she knows things like "dichotomies" and that she's an "uncouth extrovert" And other times her mother "hectored" her instead of heckled and, "either way there were too many varieties," instead of variables. The woman is a self-centered flake but not stupid and has gotten smarter and more self-aware as the books have gone on. But having her compare someone to Hitler and Goebbels in one place and make really stupid grammar mistakes in another place is too inconsistent for me, it keeps pulling me out of the story and really bugs me. The author is supposed to know her character best but it has felt for several books now like she wants her to be too much. She wants her to be her mouthpiece so she can lecture in a professorial voice about the evils of texting and whatever other agenda she has each time. But she still wants her to be silly so she tries to find the humorous voice she had in the early books too. Weak banter is bad enough but she really needs to lay off Betsy not knowing simple words if she's going to keep using words like dichotomies, it doesn't work both ways.

Social media has become unsocial, Summit Avenue is swarming with reporters, would-be vampire/zombie killers and desperate emos begging to be turned and all Betsy knows is she has to stay true to who she is while looking good in this delightful undead story. Once again, Betsy and friends made my day with their usual hilarious offbeat humor that turns rough situations into fun. MaryJanice Davidson has such a gift for keeping me on my toes with lovable, original characters that add lots of surprises and excitement to the stories and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. Note: The series is best read in sequence to get the full impact of Betsy’s personality and understanding of all the chaos that takes place in Betsy life.

Ms. Davidson has announced that there is only one Betsy book left in this series. Before I read this book, I was a bit relieved, as I thought that the series was dragging on with no particular plan. Well now I've changed my mind. After the events of Undead and Unforgiven, I want more than one more book! I need to see how these new choices effect the gang long-term.
In the meantime, I'm looking forward to an audio re-read of the entire series, Nancy Wu does such a great job.

OK.. I have been giving not so nice reviews of this series... so I'm feeling cautionally upbeat about this one. I'm seeing some growth in Betsy.... yeah! Also this one didn't seem as disjointed as the other ones. She is able to keep her attention on the problems.. at least some of the time. The story still is lost amidst the inner dialog at times, but at least it is easier to follow.

One of the new things though is that the author is touting her previous books as addendums... ie.. "see Undead and Whatever" when she is mentioning something that happened in an earlier book. If I was an author, I suppose I would perhaps do the same. She still spends a lot of time explaining what's-come-befores, so I don't believe she needs to refer us back.

Anyway, I am looking forward to the next book since I am anxious to find out if Betsy will continue to develop

Getting tired of the "if you want to know what we are talking about, read book # bla bla where we talk about Betsy's adventures with the mer people" or whatever. The last few books they have done this several times in each book and I have started grinding my teeth every time.

Also getting a little tired of Betsy being a dork for 90% of the book and then JUST KIDDING I was aware and plotting all along. And allowing herself to be abused by jerks.

Thinking I may need to step away from these books for a bit. My mindset is not receptive to this universe.

Having the main character break the fourth wall and say “footnote, it happened in Previous Book in Series” blows my mind. Who thought this was a good idea? We can’t be trusted to remember the books we read?

"Hi, my name is Betsy Taylor, and I’m the queen of the vampires. Yes, vampires are real. Any questions?"

Ahh, Undead series, you truly are one of those guilty pleasure book series out there. Considering all the ups and downs each book in this series is for me, I'm so glad that the latter parts are all up. This has got to be the most responsible Betsy has ever been (Future Ancient Crone Betsy excluded). I guess the dialogue spirals to nonsense every now and then when they're bitchin' about something but that's the gem you have to deal with in this series. Overlooking that, YES! I loved this latest installment because Betsy can be pretty kick-ass when she's responsible and serious.
(Betsy's summary of the Bible) A talking snake tricked a rib lady into eating bad fruit and that’s why women need epidurals for labor and it’s also why the world is jam-packed with sinners, but the baby born of a virgin who later came back as the Holiest of Zombies fixed it so anyone, no matter how skanky, can get to Heaven if they know the secret passwords.
"You and our father like to bitch about the embarrassment of having a vampire in the family; how d’you think I felt when I found out my long-lost sister wasn’t just prettier and smarter than me, but was the Antichrist? And what did I do? Huh? Whine? Yes. Feel incredibly insecure? Of course. Show you the door? No . Tell you that you were bound to turn evil because that’s what happens in every single book or movie about the Antichrist? No."
It was 12:32 p.m. HST (Hellish standard time),
“See?” she cried, pointing at me, and then at them for some reason. “That’s how screwed our lives are. That thing he just said? Didn’t sound insane!”
The complete randomness is always a joy to read. The complete randomness of the characters (even the minor ones) are straight as Hell (pun intended) funny! Plus, I found it amusing that MaryJanice Davidson's characters from her other book series are interacting in this one. (She did establish it in some crossover stories.) So the Pack Leader of the werewolves (whose secret was still intact) and the Queen of the Undersea Folk (aka Mermaids; whose secret was outed to the world in the Undead and Underwater crossover) both decided to drop Betsy a call. And then we have the Antichrist and Lucifer herself! I'm so glad on how Betsy dealt with them.
My husband, a man I loved dearly but knew to be sneaky, manipulative, controlling, and murderous. (God, he was so dreamy!)
How I cherish you, my queen. Even when you’re good, you’re somewhat bad.
Fair enough, beloved. For me, the real world is wherever you are.
You’ve always had it, my own. But now you have my unshakable confidence. It goes hard with me, letting the woman I love fight her own battles. But, like you, I am learning.
Lastly, aaaawwwwwww Eric! <3

Once again, I was mostly bored. I like how Betsy has matured, finally, and however reluctantly, she has accepted her fate. But there isn't a lot of story left. Snarky Betsy is always funny but it is definitely past time for other characters to come out to play. I also like how she has interwoven several series together. It has made me want to read more in those worlds. But at this point, Betsy deserves some vacation time drinking smoothies and sucking the life-blood from miscreants and so do we.

Undead and Unforgiven (Undead #14)by MaryJanice Davidson

If Betsy Taylor has learned anything about ruling Hell it’s: 1) she can't do it alone, and 2) she doesn’t have to. She’s got the help of a devoted vampire king, a dateless zombie, an exhausted new mom, an unshowered cop, a bitchy ghost, a kindly dead priest, and her late stepmother (“Go Team Satan!”). But the latest major hurdle in her post-dead life is so big she can’t even see it until it’s on CNN.
Betsy’s father and half-sister Laura (a former Anti-Christ with a grudge) have outed Betsy to the world. It doesn’t take long for the story to become 24-7 headline news. What’s more, people are not only prepared to believe in vampires, they want to kill them. For Betsy, social media has never felt so…unsocial.
Before long the mansion on Summit Avenue is swarming with reporters, would-be vampire/zombie killers, and desperate emos begging to be turned. Betsy has been forced into the unenviable role as the reluctant face of the vampire nation. All she knows is, she has to look good—this is hi-def!—and stay true to who she is. H8ers be damned.

My Review:
I joined in late to the Undead series and had to backtrack and buy up all the previous books to catch up to the latest installment. Bitsy is fantastic. She doesn't claim to be perfect nor does she strive to be. She's a heroine that relates to you and me and vice versa. However when push comes to shove she isn't afraid to put her foot down or up someones ass.
I love the slap stick comedy, I love the ensemble cast of characters because every single one of them adds another level of hilarity and also a sense of realism to the story. Also and I have to mention the footnotes because: seriously. See number 14: Men are from Mars scene. (I get such a kick out of the back and forth.) The 'Oh-No-you-didn't' moment had me rolling.
I absolutely love Davidson's writing and I can't get enough of it. Love her books, love her characters, love the Undead series. Undead and Unforgiven is the reason why I fell in love with her work to begin with.

(Nov) What a great surprise! For anyone whose been reading this series from the beginning, I think we can all agree it took a weird turn about 7 or 8 books ago and a lot of the humor and charm disappeared. What we were left with was formerly great characters who were now caricatures of their former selves - dumber than usual, whinier than usual, more annoying than usual. Add to that weird time travel plots and even weirder evil plots and it just looked like MJD was giving us a big mess from which we'd never escape. Thankfully, this book was pretty straight forward. Well, straight forward for those of us who have slogged through 13 books and a number of short stories.

While Betsy's mind still tends to wander, I think she's grown, matured a bit, learned a lot. She made some great changes to Hell, relied on people's opinions but did not shirk her duties, and stood her ground with very valid reasons about why she didn't want Sinclair on her Hell Committee. She's also dealt really well with her bitch-of-a-sister's hideous betrayal, as well as Jessica and Dick moving out of the house (but 30 min away seems far to me - I figured they'd move maybe a few blocks over or the next neighborhood, not a zip code away!). Most of our favorites were sited (and I think it's a good idea Baby John is off page- he does not add anything to the story), we grow to tolerate The Ant a bit - and OMG, Mark has a potential paranormal (yet normal) sweetheart (about time - all these books he's been alone!). And the end...holy shit the end! Talk about a major cliff hanger! It's been a long time since I a) had a hard time putting down a MJD book; b) read one of her books or even short stories with enjoyment; c) could not wait for the next book (icing on the cake - will Fred the Mermaid and/or the Wyndhams make guest appearances?!). I'm really glad to say this book did all three for me. Now if she'd just go back to the spicier writing of earlier in the series (or the Wyndham Werewolves series - talk about sexy!)I'd be over the moon. I'm actually sad to think one more and we'll be saying goodbye to the gang.

Queen Betsy's back! I love this series; it's kind of a guilty pleasure! Betsy is quirky (and ditsy and funny as all get out) but she is also capable and powerful. She's now Queen of the vampires and queen of Hell, but her biggest problem in this book is her sister, Laura (the AntiChrist - who tries to be overly good). Laura is threatening to expose the existence of vampires, what will Betsy do to save her people?
There were some hints in this book that the next may include some werewolves and mermaids. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Still enjoy this series! I love Betsy and I love how much smarter and sneakier and self-assured she is in this book. Laura drives me crazy and really hope Betsy shuts her down at every turn going forward. That girl does not deserve sympathy or a break. Ugh!

One of my favorite parts was the scene with Will Mason and the gang.. Loved him and I so wished there was more of him included! Can't wait to see him in the future books and see where things go! =D

Considered quitting a couple times, but the 2nd half improved a bit. After 14 books, Betsy should have learned something. I realize her age is frozen, but she is still a moron. Too much Hell. This one was a bit better than the last couple, but I certainly miss the fun of the first few. I read that the next one is the final one. I certainly hope that is true.

MaryJanice Davidson- Undead and Unforgiven

This book felt so much better to me. There was still a lot of things I didn't like. The babies being a huge part of it. I mean no matter how you look at it, it makes no sense. I just can't be ok with it. Being close to Betsy doesn't have any impact on her pregnancy. Even in a made up world, with made up rules, that doesn't make any sense. I absolutely hate that ark. There is nothing about it I can be ok with, and honestly that is going to be a huge reason this can't get a five from me.

I fell in love with this series so fast, and that love was destroyed so quickly. I have some of that back now. A little. There is only one book left, so I don't think that love can be completely restored, but I don't hate it anymore. Betsy is still pretty awesome in my book. I absolutely love her personality. I love how bitchy she can be. I still think I'm more like Fred, but Betsy is still amazing.

After this book, I like Sinclair more. I still wish there was more of Tina. Marc is fabulous as always, and I'm happy for him. Jess and Nick (even after the speech, I just can't) weren't as prominent here, but it was a better balance.

The next book is the last, and I'm honestly pretty glad. I think it's time for the series to be done. While I love Betsy, this world has gone too far for me.

So I would have to agree with all the other readers and their reviews. This is actually the second time I’ve read this book. I assumed I didn’t remember much the first time because I simply read the series too quickly, but I was wrong. I didn’t remember this book because there was simply nothing to remember. Thankfully I was listening to the audiobook version so I didn’t have the problem of figuring out who was speaking when, but honestly not much of anything was ever said. The last three or four books have all just blended together into one giant whining mess. All the jumping back and forth between timelines gets extremely confusing. Betsy seems to have lost any sense of humor and her incessant whining because annoying and tedious. I had listened to 86% percent of the book before I realized that the book was nearly over and nothing remarkable had happened yet. I’m going to finish the last book only because I am determined to finish the series but honestly there’s little I care to know about what’s going to happen. The characters have all shifted into former shells of themselves and the extremely loud and overly detailed sex scenes aren’t even sexy or entertaining. They just seem ridiculous at this point. When something interesting finally did happened in the last couple of chapters, it was quickly hurried through and the ending was rushed. There just seems to be little plot or point left in this series. What a shame.

I have to admit, I enjoyed Undead and Unforgiven quite a bit! I’m not entirely sure why. It could be that it’s legitimately better than the last few novels, or that Betsy grew as a character, or that the author actually decided to start wrapping things up, or even that I just needed a break from the series for a bit. Honestly, I think it’s a combination. Betsy is finally growing up and taking responsibility for her actions. I love how she decided to deal with Hell on her own, instead of just passing the task onto Sinclair. Not only that, but she actually figured something out that no one else had realized! It shows remarkable character growth, that I would not have thought possible even five books ago. I still think her and Sinclair are an awful couple, but at least there’s some mutual respect and trust now. I also appreciate that the author finally gave Marc a love interest! That really made me smile. I admit, I think the series would have been better as maybe five books or so, because it got rather bad at times. I’ve stayed with Betsy the whole time though, as I’ve been having fun, both ironically and seriously. In all honesty, sometimes I even relate to her, as a ditz myself. I’m looking forward to FINALLY seeing how it all ends! 4/5 June 16 2021

"Change is hard, but it's also inevitable."

So I suppose Betsy was Queen of Hell for the entirety of the last book, and it seems like it's going... okay. Marc as an assistant is a good choice. She revamps (no pun intended) the Ten Commandments (for some reason that's Hell's problem) and decides not to add any of the following: Thou shalt not rape, thou shalt not molest, thou shalt not harm animals. But she does try to sneak in: go shoe shopping, because, priorities.

More weird time travel / multi-verse / infinite Earth nonsense: Tina now descended from a non-witch Betsy saved from being burned at the Salem Witch Trials. Figured out that Marc is a zombie because future!Betsy turned him into one after he unalived himself to avoid being a vampire... seems counterproductive.

Laura in this is... full on Anti-Christ. I legit liked her better when she was doing everything in her power to NOT be evil. It was a nice change and made things seem different. Here I skim past conversations where she talks a lot because I hate her that much.

I was disappointed by the last few books in this series but I powered on to finish this series which I loved.
For me the best part is that she’s Queen Betsy of the Undead aka Elizabeth Taylor.(hysterical!!) There’s lots of witty humor.
And the writer sums up things from previous books so the reader isn’t lost. (ie. to remind you of stuff you may have forgotten if it’s been a while in b/w books)
I liked that.
Betsy is back & so is her shoe obsession.

This one was slightly dull. I thought this may have been b/c the writer was setting things up for the conclusion in the last book of the series.
Big surprise twist at end.

Don’t like what’s happening with sister. Glad Marc got someone.still don’t really get the twins thing.

One of the things I did wonder about in reading these books was that since we’ve covered Hell &the Devil, undead beings, etc.; would we ever meet angels, Heaven or God? I think that would be an interesting addition to the characters.

Actual rating: 3.5 stars. This entry into the Undead series almost reached the rating heights that the series used to. Besty's not as ditsy here so less annoying, and while I wish the whole "vampires have been outed" storyline took more precedence (though I didn't expect it to since this series never gives it's plotlines the room they deserve), it's an interesting direction to take the series (and of course it's for the last book). There were also some great moments: like seeing an actual fight (verbal, don't get your hopes up) between Betsy and Sinclair, Furr and Burr's reaction to it, finding out the names of the twins, Marc getting a (it's about time!), and the reveal that . After finishing this book, I'm a little sorry that there's only one more.
