Tony's autobiography is a commemoration go he lives and adventure of these bold and enterprising men and women who braved the dangers of the ocean, the hostilities of a new environment and the privations of residence on a distant coast to procure a better way of life for themselves and their families. In tracing the history of Tony's life, we trace the history of the growth of a community and a people who amidst difficult circumstances were able to achieve a large measure of success and recognition for themselves.
When I moved to Trinidad and Tobago, I was told that the Syrians basically own the island. The name Sabga was mentioned again and again both in positive and negative light. It is with this background that I jumped at the opportunity to read Anthony Sabga's autobiography.
I am a sucker for a great rags to riches story and "A Will and A Way" takes you on a journey of success. Imagine moving to a country where you do not know the language, where you have to depend on everyone, where you are uneducated in a society with less than 100 people from your homeland- that alone is enough to send me into depression. Not Anthony Sabga.
What I loved most about this book was that it was unashamed in showing you how many times Sabga actually failed. You got a realistic look into what it was like doing business in the 60s and just how a little out of the box thinking carried you a long way. Granted, this story was told from Anthony's point of view so some of it might be a little fiction but who am I to judge.
What I didn't like was the layout/how the book was narrated. I felt like the authors/researchers had a lot to say but they didn't know how to present it. They also didn't know what to do with all the information they received so at points they threw a lot of information and at other points a whole situation or problem was summed up in two lines. Maybe I am nit picking here, but I felt there were so many ways they could have presented the information but they erred on the side of easy and most convenient.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book mainly because of the historical background in doing business in Trinidad, the history the Syrians on the island and how motivating the overall message is.
If you are planning to do business in Trinidad this is definitely a go too book. If you like a great rags to riches story, this will pique your interest.
