When the sun goes down, Ripley Van Raden sets out to guide tour-goers through the haunted locations of Devil's Moon, Kentucky. During the day, she's head librarian. There are plenty of ghosts there too.
Ripley receives an old diary in the mail. When strange things occur at the library, Ripley believes the book could be the cause.
During one of her haunted tours, a murder victim is discovered. That's not Ripley's only problem. Someone is trying to take over her haunted tour. Is the competition related to the murder?
Perhaps the old diary holds the answer. Ripley must discover the truth before the past comes back to haunt her.
I really liked this one. Much more creepier and meaner ghosts in this one too. Readers that are into the paranormal and fun characters would like this cozy. Started the next book already. Have fun reading!
It's hard to write a review when you have loved an author for so long and up until this book I was enjoying this series but this book had me falling asleep with my iPad on my face and that just never happens with a Rose Pressey book, I was actually bored reading it. Rip frustrates me, she doesn't finish stuff like finding her employee in the library holding seance 's, yes she caught her and then at one point wondered if it was the first time she had done it but then that was it nothing was resolved... Then there's her relationship with Brannon, when Rip needs help she doesn't always call him because she didn't want to bother him, then when his ex wife assaults Rip she doesn't tell him.... I don't get it and seriously 5 books in and the ex is still causing Rip problems well it's just a big 'yawn'. I was hoping for so much more but just got the same old thing shuffled around a bit, it's like a never ending merry go round.
I enjoy this series of books however, not so much this one. Things were happening all over the place and it was a bit confusing to read. One minute Rip is doing one thing the next chapter she is randomly somewhere else with no explanation why or what was going on? Brannon appears to have become more a token character just there for lifts and random rescues. Also our heroine was really acting too stupid to live at some points. The ending left a lot unresolved and was a bit of a let down. A lot of the sentences contradicted themselves as well. At one point rip says she didn't want to tell John something but then she does. Then she questions how he knew the name she just told him? Was confusing. I hope the story develops better in the next book as it would be a shame to lose the storyline.
I'm a huge fan of Pressey, but this one needs some major editing. The story skips and jumps around so much in the last third of the book that I couldn't even keep track of what was happening.
I do like these books but I felt that this one had Ripley making some pretty dumb/risky decisions. I did like the fight with Brannon's ex and I hope she gets her in the next book
This book was a little disjointed and discombobulated. It was a decent read but there were times when I wanted to know more. I mean why would you find a group of people led by an employee in the back room after hours having a seance and do nothing more than tell them to go home? Wouldn't most people call the police? Why did Ripley do that? There was no explanation and no follow up to this incident. Another thing is that this book was bad, then good, then bad, then good, then boring, then interesting and that got boring after awhile.
I must say that this book had the spookiest atmosphere of any in the series so far. The dark "thing" was scary and the fact that he could actually attack Ripley was amazing. Not that I want Ripley hurt but the girl needs to stop rushing into areas and events that are dangerous. One of these days she's really going to get HURT! And I can't say it would be a bad thing because she has shown no growth since the first book. And I'm old enough to know that experiences and age change people as they grow older. Ripley has had enough experiences in her life to qualify as a 50-year-old woman even though she's quite young. She should be gaining a bit of wisdom by now!
I did like the fact that Mrs. Clatterback helped save Ripley from the evil shadow ghost and I really don't care what her reason for doing so was. Personally, I think she was just being territorial of the cemetery and didn't want any evil newcomer in her cemetery so Ripley was the least of her worries. Sort of like the saying "she's my sister and if anyone is going to get her in trouble, it's going to be ME!".
And I'm sorry but Brannon is becoming a wuss where Ripley is concerned. I'm glad he helps her out now and believes her but his reactions to the danger she's in is becoming rather blah. And I don't like that he enables her and doesn't do much to keep her running into danger.
I've just started the next book in the series so we will see what happens and how I like or dislike it.
Monica is still the library assistant, & Rip & Tammy are still not impressed with her, but they manage to work around her anyway. The extra star is due to a lot less grammatical errors than in the previous books.
Rip seems to have some competition. When Rip tells one of her tour goers, she's not looking for an assistent, nor to expand her ghost tours, the young woman in question, decides to set up her own ghost tour business, & then proceeds to steel customers out from under Rip by re-routing them to her. Rip manages to put a stop to that once she finds out, but soon afterwards, has to put her own tour on hold when another tour goer is murdered during one of her tours. And then there's the book. What does the book have to do with what's going on? It had been sent to the library where Rip works during the day, & was addressed to her. Rip decides to check the book out & becomes obsessed with the story, which is basically a journal by someone who used to live in the town until her untimely death. It is at that point the book abruptly ends. Soon Rip starts to see similarities in the book & certain things going on in town. Can a book be haunted? And when the tour goer who tried to steel Rip's tour is murdered, what's a girl to think? At least the competition is gone, but so not worth it if someone is murdering people on tours. Between fighting evil spirits, a haunted book, & an unknown killer, Rip has her hands full, trying to figure it all out, as well as stop it.
I agree with what the other 3-star reviewers have said. Brannon is becoming a token, Rip makes stupid decisions and there is little to no follow-through. I like this series and assume it must get better, because there are many more books. However this one is becoming too formulaic - Rip decided to go somewhere stupid, alone, because she doesn't want to bother Brannon. Brannon saves her. There were some missed opportunities too - she brings Annie home with her. There could have been so many funny "slumber party" and conversational moments! Instead it just mentions that she brought her home and later that she wanted to stay in the library. There is little to no character development in this and the last couple of books. Rip wakes up in a field and there is no explanation of how the spirit got her there. The new library employee holds a seance in the library and there is zero follow-up on that. Sorry, but this whole book is just lazy writing. I love Rose Pressey though, and look forward to seeing if this series improved!
When Ripley receives a diary in the mail. Things go from bad to worse.
This book was written by a woman who allowed a stranger in to help while her husband was away. It tells the story of how she first grew suspicious of the stranger, and then scared of him. The diary stops abruptly. Ripley investigates and discovers the young woman died around the time of her last entry. And now the spirit of Jacob is embedded in the diary and takes his wrath out on whoever reads it.
This is an intense book that does not fall into the cozy category. It is a suspense book through and through.
I like the supernatural element to the mystery. Easy read where you get to know the characters. I don't really care for the main character's child like naivety. She disregards her safety to the point where you question of she just really stupid or that trusting. She also doesn't solve the crime as much as becomes a target and almost victim and had the bad guy pretty much lay it out for her. It's still entertaining easy read.
I've read others by this author & in this series that were ok but this one really wasn't. The story didn't flow at all & was just confusing. The ending - it just made no sense at all. I'll try the next one because it's on kindle unlimited but if it's like this one, it will be the last for me by this author.
This one kept me on the edge of my seat. This time the ghosts are not friendly. The haunted tour guide must figure out what is causing the haunting before someone she loves gets hurt. Fast paced action. I loved it.
In this book, Ripley receives a diary with an evil spirit attached to it. More murder and mayhem face Ripley and Brannon. Can't wait to see what happens in the next book!
I usually love Rose Pressey's books, but this one felt like it was written in a rush. It didn't really flow and a lot of the plot points didn't make sense. Also Ripley was such a naive ditz in this. It was unnerving.
This series is a great cozy full of mystery, ghosts and suspense. It’s very light on the super scary stuff but has plenty of spooky to keep you entertained. Rip is a fun, likable character with a great group of secondary characters.
Editing errors. The story did not flow smoothly. It was like the author forgot what had been written and what was suppose to be written. Liked the story line though.
Ripley is a Head Librarian who gives haunted tours of her haunted home town! Great characters and writing style! I enjoy all of Rose Presseys books! Give her a try!
There were a bunch of inconsistencies and nothing else was mentioned about the seance lol and Ripley was kind of dumb in her decisions this time around. But I still loved it!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Oh my Rip what have yo done now??? One murder after another and an wife and a stalker! You have stirred up troubled waters but luckily you bright chocolate candy
Rip is back again in this lively addition to the series. Things are always strange around her but this time seems worse. She catches her new employee in the library aftet hours with a group using an Ouija board in the children's room. Her new employee never acts like Rip is her boss and it's kind of annoying but she is a good worker. Then someone gets myrdered on her ghost tour. Another woman named Ruby has also shown up and started giving tours too and could possibly put her out of business. Not to mention that someone has sent her a strange book that seems to have a dark spirit attached to it. This is when all of Rip's latest problems seem to start. Ripley reads the old book which turns out to be the diary of a woman namex Sarah Taylor. It tells the tale of her life while her husband is away traveling and a stranger shows up. He has scared Sarah but the diary ends without any clues to what happened to Sarah and Rip kind of feels like she is becoming Sarah. This dark spirit is really powerful and attacks several times leaving Rip with no choice but to deal with it with help from Brannon and a stranger named Lee.
Cover/Title: I love the titles that this author comes up with. The covers are always colorful and fun.
Characters: I love the quirky characters in these books and there are always ghosts hanging around giving Ripley a hard time.
Plot:Ripley spends her days as a librarian and her nights giving tours of the haunted places in her town. She gets a mysterious package with no return address and soon she gets visits from a poltergeist. Ripley races against time to figure out what is going on and put the poltergeist to rest.
Overall: I love this quirky little haunted town and its inhabitants. I love that the library has a resident ghost and cat. I will definitely be reading more of these little mysteries.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I'm going to have to read more from Rose. This book has a great blend of mystery, suspense and the supernatural elements. Even though it's the 5th in a series, it's also a stand alone read. Great characters both of the living and the non-living.
