It's a siege! What's left of the Hellsing crew and their new team of hired bodyguards have traveled to South America to investigate the Millennium threat. While they crossed the border, parties unknown pulled some strings branding them as terrorists and matching a small country's power structure against the ultimate undead! Join them in a battle of blood, guts, ghouls, gore...and a lot of Kohta Hirano's signature offbeat comedy. This punk-goth-vampire-action-comedy-fun-as-hell nightmare just keeps rolling, as Kohta has even more fun than he probably ought to. This series has enough style and strangeness to fuel ferociously fervent fandom.
Kohta Hirano (平野 耕太 Hirano Kōta) is a Japanese mangaka most famous for his manga Hellsing. Starting his career first as a mangaka's assistant (self-described as "horrible" and "lazy" in said assistant position), and later an H manga artist, he went on to enjoy somewhat limited success with other relatively unknown manga titles such as Angel Dust, Coyote, Gun Mania and Hi-Tension. His first major success came with his manga series Hellsing, which got its start and was subsequently serialized in a monthly manga magazine, Young King OURs, towards the latter half of 1997.
I really like this page. Up until now Alucard's been all cocky and arrogant every single time he shows up, not even slightly annoyed. And now he's mad because a human took the easy way out. Subtle and powerful storytelling, a single facial expression tells a great deal of his mindset and what he's really like under the hood.
This volume has a few more quiet moments, too, good conversations and character development that serves to flesh them out for us. We get a few bits of backstory, introduce the main villain, and such. I think it's where the story finally picks up for real.
We'll be up to four-star stuff soon. At least, from what I remember.
Although I found the previous two volumes decent, they were far from being great. I carried on with the hopes that it would eventually get to that point, but I was wrong.
The third volume in the series turned out be a soulless entry, with convoluted dialogues and gory violence with some plot crammed between them. Alucard continues to be a badass still.
I don't think I'll be continuing further with this series.
All I see are limbs flying, blood squirting, and Alucard (+ Integra) smiling. That’s all I need to continue. I may not know what the hell is happening but I’m having a good ole time looking at the action.
I really don't want to bring the rating for this series down. I'm reading these volumes at the request of a friend, and they are, I suspect quite good for Manga. I'm not really much of a Manga reader. What I find fascinating about the series is the way religion is tied so effortlessly into the plot. Alucard is no doubt the coolest of the vampires. There's quite a bit of theological stuff to chew on here as well. I'm not usually shy about expressing my opinion, but I really don't have much to compare this with. As a kid I read comic books like everyone else did, but apart from a stint reading all the Calvin and Hobbes books, and Gary Larson's The Far Side, I've gone pretty much textual.
Kohta Hirano is talented both as an artist and as a story-teller. Probably it's my age, but I'm not sure I'm following the story correctly, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. A fine way to pass a rainy afternoon.
OH boy. THis was an interesting volume, though at times I just had no clue what was going on haha. It didn't help that there was so much gore, I mean, really you don't fuck with Alucard. That guy has orders and he will follow them to a t. There are body parts coming around, blood spraying everywhere, head being beheaded and rolling around, and more. Oh boy, at times I just wanted to step back, but I just couldn't. I had to know what was going on. I wanted to know if the baddies behind the whole mess would pop up, fight Alucard (or try at least). I thought it was a shame that Seras wasn't around that much in this one. I would have liked her to be more vampire, and wonder how long she can hold the thirst for blood. The art was a bit weird at times, sometimes it was pretty and awesome, other times just weird. Also, Alucard cleans up pretty nicely, haha. He is still scary, but also quite sexy.
Ugh, this got unoriginal and predictable very fast. 📢 A call to all writers and mangaka who write fantasy: please please please stop with the resurrected-nazi trope. It's tiring and unoriginal.
Alucard is forever awesome and hot, and I was hoping I could get to see more character development of the police lady (I cannot recall her name), but this series is going to be a DNF for me.
Actual footage of me every time we get a fantasy+nazi trope:
Wow, now that was a hell of an adventure! I was 100% sure I wouldn't give another 5 stars to any other "Hellsing" volume, and yet, here I am - doing it! So.. Why I thought I wouldn't? I kind of grew tired of all the teared and flying around human limbs. Also, Alucard has a dying wish or something since he gets killed in almost (or) every battle he has engaged so far. The cop has a little appearance at all, and I wanted to see more of her to begin with. BUT! It is good. Really good. The art is improving: Kohta-sensei is no longer in huge pointy noses, now they are normally long and pointy. Alucard is getting more and more insane with every new page, I think I'm starting to fall for him even if Kohta-sensei rarely troubles to draw his entire face. The story is revealing really fast, I mean, what happened at vol.2 was the end of 13-episodes of anime! So imagine my surprise when what I knew would happen and expected it to happen around the 7th volume, happened so early! Another 7 volumes of pure, evil unknown, now that's a great start! I got so into this manga, that I'd stop on some beautiful (in a sick, twisted way, ya know) panel and just admire it for several more seconds before I proceed to the next one. To feel it. To remember it. To admire it.
This review will be short. The plot is just too thin in this series. The action is cool and the visuals are great, but there is just not enough to keep me reading and the story lacks cohesion and direction. At some point during this volume, I realized neither I nor the author knew where the story was going and it was time for me to find something else to read.
Seras provided several laughs in this one (it was funny to see a vampire running to the boss with complaints about other people instead of dealing with it herself etc), and just a solid volume overall.
Again, art moves forward a step, it's funny to read the authors notes asking for assistants in the margins, as this came out chapter by chapter originally. Does end rather abruptly. Anyway, not bad.
Overall Rating: Manga - A+ Original anime series - B New anime series - A+ Summary: Hellsing is a manga series by Kouta Hirano. Hellsing chronicles the efforts of the mysterious and secret Royal Order of Protestant Knights, Hellsing, as it combats vampires, ghouls, and other supernatural foes who threaten the kingdom of England. The main character, Alucard (Dracula cleverly spelled backwards), is used to kill other supernatural creatures, and makes Seras Victoria (a cop he shoots to kill another vampire) into a vampire early on in the series and we get to watch her deal with her new life as a blood drinker with some hilarious (and sometimes creepy results).
I love vampires, so it's not much of a surprise that I like Hellsing, a series based around vampires and supernatural organizations. So, why does the series get three separate ratings? It boils down to the fact that the first anime series is a lot different than the manga and the second series.
I was first introduced to Hellsing with the original anime series, which was based (loosely!) on the manga. At the time, roughly 2002 or 2003, I thought it was amazing. Unfortunately, the end of that series is extremely weak on plot, and feels rushed. It's like the people involved had a brain-storming session over a pile of coke, had a bunch of cool ideas, but couldn't figure out how to bring them together into a cool ending. Not to mention the fact that the concept for the final villain, Incognito, is kind of racist (from the "Dark Continent", ends up wearing little more than jewelry), and is pretty fucking lame when compared to some of the other villains introduced earlier in the series.
Later, I found out that only the first 6 episodes or so were based on the Manga, and the rest of the series was made up for the anime. That explains why it felt so rushed, because it was! So, I decided it was time to check out the manga, to see if the plot held up longer in it.
The manga blew away the anime, and now I have some trouble watching the old series. In the manga, you get more detail and more character development, and more characters. For example, Alexander Anderson is introduced in the the old anime series, but we don't meet the other members of Iscariot. Nor is there any hint of the Nazi organization, Millennium. I could go on, but the point is that the manga kicks the anime's ass. If you've seen the anime, do yourself a favor and check out the manga. If you haven't checked out either, then get your vampire loving ass out to your local comic book shop (or wherever you buy manga) and pick it up. If you don't love vampires, then I hate you. Ok, maybe not hate, but seriously what's up with that shit?
The new anime series on the other hand is completely faithful to the manga, and definitely worth watching. The production value is a lot higher, the creator is behind the series, and overall it's simply kick-ass. My suggestion is to read the manga (volumes 1-7 are out now, and volume 8 is scheduled to come out in early July), then watch the new OVA series, Hellsing Ultimate, and then watch the old anime. It's all good, but the manga and the Ultimate series are a lot better. It's like watching the season of Angel where he gets fat and then going back and watching season 2 or 3 of Buffy. No one likes a fat vampire.

Surprise surprise, the Nazis are behind everything again! This twist has been kinda obvious since the very beginning, but it’s fun to see the over-the-top villains finally make an official appearance. They’re going by the name Millennium: The Last Battalion.
Integra deploys Alucard, Seras and a group of rebel soldiers for hire called the Wild Geese to Brazil to track down the whereabouts of the remnants of Millennium and track down where the ringleaders may be gathering their undead forces in secret.
Alucard goes full John Wick on the Brazilian task force working under Millenium and the whole volume is an all out slaughterfest that ends in a brutal declaration of war. If the Nazis want to make a comeback, the Hellsing organization has their own legion of monsters that won’t make it easy for them.
The Vatican Iscariot rebels are busy waging their own war against heretics and traitors, building up their own alliance against the monstrous evils gathering all across Europe. Hellsing, Iscariot and Millennium are bound to cross paths eventually, and when they do, it’s going to be a bloody mess.
After battling vampires and ghouls and mad priests and all that, Alucard comes face to face with... regular old human policemen? There's a completely different side to him fighting humans who know they're outclassed versus the 'monsters' who are so full of themselves. Some cool bloodshed here, though there's a bit more comedy and overall the volume is slower than the ones previous.
. 🇬🇧 It is a comic book and a very entertaining kind, easy to read and with a lot of action, characters are let to know each other slowly, you have moments of a little dialogue and a lot of fight, I liked it 👌
🟠 It's a simple reading that deals with a vampire Allucard who kills others from an opposite organization, kills anyone who gets in the way of those changing movements, people calls him a monster. He fights Iscariot 13 (the Catholics) and the Millennium, it's all a battle and it's at the same time to send him to kill humans as well.
🔵 I liked the reading, it's very dynamic, characters and the comic design are very good, it's direct and it doesn't bore you, it lets you follow it well and contemplate what the story shows😘
The book opens with a chapter of sequel, as Alucard and Walter discuss what to do next after learning about the Millenium group. We learn that the pair faced the nazis before, 50 years ago. A more detailed flashback here might have been a good idea. The conversation scenes tend to be a bit awkward and confusing. Jumping from point to point without logic while the characters lack substance and believable reactions. Anyway, they decide to head to South America to look for further clues.
Once they get there, it turns out that millenium is on to them and have laid a trap at the hotel. They’re surrounded, framed for murders, and attacked by police. (You didnt think they were actually going to investigate anything, did you?)
After these two chapters of setup, the rest is all action. This is where the author excels. It’s fast, dynamic, and stylish. Alucard mows down a ton of humans. Integra gives the ok and he kills a bunch more. Ruthless. He then faces off against the main threat — a dandy who uses card attacks. This guy has some of the same tricks as Alucard, able to disassemble himself and come back from damage, so he’s the first real test. Continued next volume.
The action is great but the plot and characterization remain shallow.
I keep wanting to like this series. I’m all about monsters and I’m a sucker for the age old “who’s the real monster- the guy with the fangs or the guy who tells him to kill people” routine.
But this is like all violence and no plot. I don’t mind the guts and gore, I just wish there was a point to it? By volume three I was hoping to see some of the big ideas from the series, but I think there’s been steadily less plot and higher meaningless body counts. I’m bored.
The series might get away with it if I loved the art, but the older style doesn’t do it for me as much. I think I’m stopping at volume 3.
But How does this series get such incredibly high stars??? How? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a manga series with a higher rating. And it’s bleh!
So we have a name to the threat of Hellsing and all those they strive to protect: Milennium. Seras and Alucard are shipped off to where they believe their first step to taking down this adversary is located. They are met with human police suppression and the true nature of these organizations starts to shine forth.
Gore, guts, the whole nine is continually thrown at us in this storyline which, to say the least, is satisfying, but a bit tiresome. Character development, something I can be a junkie for, is starting to take a back seat, but I'm sure it'll pick back up in subsequent installments. In the meantime, this is fun, with some of Kohta Hirano's offbeat humor that leaves us wanting more.
You know what? I'm always happy to see nazis as the bad guys, I'm very pro "punch a nazi". I'm still a bit confused about what's happening, and I really want to see more of Victoria. Also the art. There so many really cool and gory panels in the comic, but there are just as many with weird anatomy. The arms. The arms are so long and the hands are so big. I've had the thought that maybe it's because the guns are so big, and weighs so much so it's forcing the arms to elongate over time, especially with Alucard.
Very simplistic, with most of the story taking place as a fight between the uber vampire and police. We are introduced to a bunch of nazis working behind the scenes in South America, and one of them fights Alucard with playing card powers? Not much to this story, though I do like how the author made it clear that Alucard is very much a monster who cares nothing for human lives, and therefore his actions are the moral responsibility of the Hellsing director. The relationship between those two remains to be explained/fleshed out.
Alucard and Police Girl, along with some mercenaries are sent to Argentina to seek out and destroy a group of Nazis who have previously attacked the Hellsing headquarters.
An initial attack on Alucard using local police goes bad and only angers the vampires. Lots of innocent blood is spilled but this might be part of the Nazi plan.
this was so extreme and unethical. they could've handle things way better. but surprisingly, this is the volume were i got invested in the story. there were some moments of light, life and death. i find the series improving with each volume. the artwork as well! i will continue reading!
thanks a lot to Diego 💖 for borrowing me his entire collection!
