What do you get when you mix reanimated Nazis, vampires, and freaky killer Catholics and Protestants breathing down each others' necks? In the case of Hellsing, you get an all-out bloody war. Or such has proven to be the case so far. The world is engulfed in the flames of destruction, and all seems lost. Vernedead's "Geese" are literally being eaten alive, and it might just take half-vampire, Seras Victoria, a certain loss of innocence to provide a shred of hope. But that's not all this story hinges on. The vampire Hellsing himself will surely show at some point, and the Catholic Iscariot Army, a dreaded force, is also on the march. This is a situation of boiling blood, and it's about to burst!

This is probably my favourite volume in the series. Alucard is more a force of nature than a character, more often than not, so it's Seras Victoria upon whose shoulders fall most of the emotional torque and tension, growth and catharsis. Seeing her grow to her powers, and later, her budding relationship with Pip, are some of my main draws. This is where it all culminates.

It's almost a shame that Alucard finally comes back. The rest of the story is going to be a bit of a step down.

Pip Bernadotte, you have stolen my heart. You are the one person who makes Seras Victoria such a dynamic character.

If I could give this manga issue six stars, I would.

This volumeeeeee... I love Seras she's my GIRL!!! She is the main character and I see every character of this manga in how they connect to her. Pip, Integra and Alucard. Pip especially. This is an iconic volume and I was honestly scared getting here because it has a climax in one of the storylines which is mainly the sole focus of the volume - and the build-up has paid off so well.
So, now what?
Let's see more of those mfers explode in bloody gore.

Hell yeah Seras and Bernadotte! I love that their arcs as character came to a climax here, the mercenary group as a whole being solely motivated by money but being entered into this supernatural religious world-ending war and having to deal with being grossly underpowered. Millenium has supernatural monsters, the Catholic Church really isn't "human" with a bunch of religious bullshit strewn everywhere, but the mercenaries feel the most relatable. Greedy, in it only for the money, no real morals, but no powers of their own either. Hopelessly outclassed and doing your best to keep it together as everything and everyone you know dies around you, is there anything more human than that desperation to survive when you have no real control over the situation? And unlike all the other vampires and ghouls, they don't sell each other out. It's great to see!

Oh and, yeah, Seras Victoria becoming a complete badass. Her development is late to come but with finally seeing her backstory she really owns this volume and, hell, I'd say she's the most compelling character in the series at this point.

The Nazi/vampire invasion of London continues, and major contingent is trying to take Hellsing headquarters. Seras Victoria (aka Police Girl) and the mercenaries are doing the best they can do against Zorin Blitz (using her psychic powers) and the vampire Storm Troopers. But are they enough to hold down the fort until help arrives.

The Major may be more than he seems as his airship continues on its way to England. Also, what has become of Aculard and the flagship? Things continue to go downhill for our heroes and it looks like the Vatican might have its own goals.

Overall Rating:
Manga - A+
Original anime series - B
New anime series - A+

Summary: Hellsing is a manga series by Kouta Hirano. Hellsing chronicles the efforts of the mysterious and secret Royal Order of Protestant Knights, Hellsing, as it combats vampires, ghouls, and other supernatural foes who threaten the kingdom of England. The main character, Alucard (Dracula cleverly spelled backwards), is used to kill other supernatural creatures, and makes Seras Victoria (a cop he shoots to kill another vampire) into a vampire early on in the series and we get to watch her deal with her new life as a blood drinker with some hilarious (and sometimes creepy results).

I love vampires, so it's not much of a surprise that I like Hellsing, a series based around vampires and supernatural organizations. So, why does the series get three separate ratings? It boils down to the fact that the first anime series is a lot different than the manga and the second series.

I was first introduced to Hellsing with the original anime series, which was based (loosely!) on the manga. At the time, roughly 2002 or 2003, I thought it was amazing. Unfortunately, the end of that series is extremely weak on plot, and feels rushed. It's like the people involved had a brain-storming session over a pile of coke, had a bunch of cool ideas, but couldn't figure out how to bring them together into a cool ending. Not to mention the fact that the concept for the final villain, Incognito, is kind of racist (from the "Dark Continent", ends up wearing little more than jewelry), and is pretty fucking lame when compared to some of the other villains introduced earlier in the series.

Later, I found out that only the first 6 episodes or so were based on the Manga, and the rest of the series was made up for the anime. That explains why it felt so rushed, because it was! So, I decided it was time to check out the manga, to see if the plot held up longer in it.

The manga blew away the anime, and now I have some trouble watching the old series. In the manga, you get more detail and more character development, and more characters. For example, Alexander Anderson is introduced in the the old anime series, but we don't meet the other members of Iscariot. Nor is there any hint of the Nazi organization, Millennium. I could go on, but the point is that the manga kicks the anime's ass. If you've seen the anime, do yourself a favor and check out the manga. If you haven't checked out either, then get your vampire loving ass out to your local comic book shop (or wherever you buy manga) and pick it up. If you don't love vampires, then I hate you. Ok, maybe not hate, but seriously what's up with that shit?

The new anime series on the other hand is completely faithful to the manga, and definitely worth watching. The production value is a lot higher, the creator is behind the series, and overall it's simply kick-ass. My suggestion is to read the manga (volumes 1-7 are out now, and volume 8 is scheduled to come out in early July), then watch the new OVA series, Hellsing Ultimate, and then watch the old anime. It's all good, but the manga and the Ultimate series are a lot better. It's like watching the season of Angel where he gets fat and then going back and watching season 2 or 3 of Buffy. No one likes a fat vampire.

Tremenda.

Today's post is on Hellsing volume 7 by Kohta Hirano. It is186 pages long and is published by Dark Horse. As it is the seventh in the series you need to have read the first six to understand the story. The cover has Seras and CaptainVernedead on it. There is language, no sex, and lots of violence in this volume. The story is told from third person god perspective. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- London is battered by a hurricane of death and destruction as vampire Nazis, Protestant knights, and Vatican warriors battle in what may result in a world-wide apocalypse. The Hellsing Organization's Wild Geese mercenaries are literally being eaten alive, and it might just take half-vampire Seras Victoria to embrace her unholy destiny to provide humanity a shred of hope. But with the Catholic Iscariot Army on the march and Alucard, the vampire lord himself, sure to enter the fray, this cauldron of blood is about to boil over!

Review- Character development for Seras in this volume. Seras finally chooses what she is going to be and that is a vampire. Again more deaths but that is sort-of the idea around a manga like this one. We some back story on Alucard, like how he ended up in England and it is directly from Dracula so that was nice. Father Anderson has turned on the leader of the Iscariot division because he is crazy and evil. And London has been destroyed. So much going on here. I am very curious about how Hirano is going to end this series. Only three volumes left.

I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

Alucard barely makes an appearance in this volume, only coming in in the last 3 pages. The bulk of the story is the last stand of Captain Vernedad and the French mercenaries against tattooed general Zorin.

It's a good arc for Seras Victoria - she drinks blood for the very first time and becomes a full vampire. I'm really sorry to see the back of Vernedad - the sexy French mercenary was really beginning to come into his own as one of the best supporting characters.

We also get a welcome return of Schrodinger who is "everywhere and nowhere" - I just love this character, and think he exemplifies the fun this has with highbrow concepts, mixing them in with punk levels of violence.

Drunk on power, Maxwell has switched sides again!!! And this ramps up the Protestant/Catholic divide as well as the main plot of evil, supernatural Nazis trying for world domination.

Artwork's maybe not quite as tight as some of the volumes and taking an entire book for one fight is perhaps a tad self indulgent, however Hellsing is just so cool that I don't find myself caring too much.

Can't wait for volume 8.

What's a holiday for if not doing what you can't do on normal days? I owe a friend his copy of Hellsing back soon, so it seemed like a good time to take it on. This volume sees (spoiler) Seras becoming a vampire, and an adorable one at that. Alucard is held off until the very end of the volume.

The interesting thing here is that the book begins to follow Bram Stoker's classic a little more closely. Catholic and Protestant are still going at each other, with a crazed Archbishop killing Brits indiscriminately and reformed Hellsing striking back. A few long term characters are killed off, but vampires trade in resurrection. I'm finding myself curious about what happens in the next installment.

Reading about vampires on Thanksgiving? Well, work does demand it's pound of flesh as well.

Not recommended for Seras/Alucard shippers.

While the bulk of this installment was the climax of Seras and Pip's story and stories, which is one of the best chapters in the series, the ending segment with Maxwell doesn't quite hold up as well when you re-read it as an adult. I have no idea how or even if I ever took that part seriously, but while reading it in line to punch out at work tonight I was tittering at Maxwell's hammy insanity behind the tree of goofy microphones, and the Major "conducting" the war. But intentionally or otherwise, this chapter is enjoyable from start to finish.

I saw so much of Ceres Victoria's story as I wanted in the beginning of the manga, and even more. That was great because I kind of had lost hope about her.
The gym-loving tattooed bitch, slut, cunt Zorin that I sincerely hated since her first appearance is out of the picture now, but I still feel sad that she got away so easily, sigh.
The Maxwell I admired turned into some stupid power-loving butcher, so now I'm heartbroken. And father Anderson that I hated, now I'm starting to admire, hahaha, what a huge change of heart, eh!
Ah, I really wanted to give 5* to this volume. But I just don't feel like it.

The drama and back stories start to come out as Alucard draws nearer. I actually think Alucard's absence for the past few volumes actually helps the series focus more on the characters who are actually vulnerable to death, whereas if Alucard had been fighting the battle from square one, it would be over too quickly and it wouldn't be nearly as dramatic as it is now. I think Hirano took a good chance here by playing this move.

Dark art (literally black), rape, graphic violence, cannibalism.

The Nazi's also now speak German, Italian, Spanish and some weird English. What?

I honestly don't get how people enjoyed this series. This isn't just 'dark' - the plot makes no sense.
The last 4 volumes have just been vampires fighting Nazi's and tons of explosions.

I'm one for fight scenes and explosions, but come on. Make some sense out of it. At least give me SOME plot.

The story is thin, but to make up for that there is fast pacing, great art, and lots of action.

The heroic last stand of the Wild Geese. Pip saves Seras, though it costs him his life, and inspires her to victory after she drinks his blood. This whole battle is the high point of the series. Hirano did enough character building to create genuine emotion and empathy for Seras and the Wild Geese and the enemy was relentless and terrifying.

A short flashback to Seras’ childhood trauma doesn’t seem to fit with her character.

Maxwell launches his attack on both the vampires and English Protestants. Anderson refuses to go along with it. Seras arrives to rescue Integra.

Alucard arrives.

The major dances atop his zeppelin and is saved from death by Walter, the traitorous butler. Foreshadowing for this twist was weak. Should have shown that he was haunted by aging and his lost youth.

A volume all about Seras Victoria which was cool. It's also pretty much one big long fight. The panels though are so overfilled with crap that it's sometimes really hard to pick up what's happening. Sometimes less is more. I also can't get over how ridiculous the soldiers for the Catholic church look in their Klan robes. This series is OK, but I'm glad there's only 10 volumes or I'd probably give up at this point.
