Mountain Bodyguard

Rate this book
Mills & Boon Intrigue series brings you stories filled with secrets & seduction...

Caring for six children was supposed to be the toughest part of Lexie DeMille's new job. Then their massive Aspen residence was attacked and it was clear someone had a very personal vendetta to settle. A job that required TST Security and its best bodyguard, Mason Steele. His focus should only have been on securing the remote mountain hideaway. But unraveling Lexie's secrets became critical to the case and to his own private agenda. Under a veneer of domesticity was a marine brat with more survival skills than your average nanny. Something about her had driven her assailant into a violent rage. And that same thing blurred the parameters of Mason's detail—and would test his every survival instinct.

Cassie grew up in a small town at the very tip of southern Illinois. A tomboy, she spent most of her time outside and got into big trouble for breaking the trellis while climbing out her second-story bedroom window.

When her family moved to L.A., major culture shock ensued. She discovered that grapefruits grew on trees, television offered more than two channels, and all the other girls had breasts. While hiding out and waiting for her chest to develop, she read voraciously, raiding her mother's bookshelf for Mickey Spillane when she finished all her Nancy Drew novels.

Another move took her family to Denver, the place Cassie still calls home.

She graduated from North Central college outside Chicago, got married, and returned to Colorado where she worked in personnel at the Denver Post and lived in a mountain cabin without running water. Upon learning she was pregnant, a return to civilization seemed prudent. She settled in Denver, raised two amazing daughters, and started writing for Harlequin. After her divorce, she took a break from romance and wrote straight suspense.

During her frantic years as a single mom, writing books and working odd jobs to supplement her income, she hardly had time to breathe, much less to dream. Then something remarkable happened. She fell in love with a tall, sexy man who was an aerial photographer and the author of tough-guy mystery novels. Fortunately, he loved her back. She found her real-life hero, inherited three more grown kids and three grandchildren.

Cassie started writing romance again, loving every minute of a life filled with laughter, crazy road trips, sailboats, and journeys to Oregon with long walks on rocky beaches.

Not too long ago, the love of her life developed inoperable pancreatic cancer. With supportive friends and family standing by, he died at home.

Cassie now lives alone, surrounded by beautiful memories. She has no regrets and considers herself lucky to have found her soul mate, the man with whom she shared a perfect love.

I have no idea why Cassie Miles writes Harlequin Intrigue books. Every single book I read by her feels like she wants to be writing screwball romantic comedies for a different line. But despite a few titles for long-defunct line Harlequin Temptation, which was where you would be most likely to find romantic comedies (and a line I quite liked back in the day), Miles has mostly written for Intrigue since the late 80s.

This nonsense has to do with Lexie DeMille, a babysitter for an admiral who becomes the target of an anti-conspiracy group of some kind. They believe he has what's called the Damascus Cache, which has the details of all the undercover spies across all the different agencies. Or something along those lines. Lexie's own father would be on there, which could put him in danger, even though he's retired.

Don't ask me.

The majority of the book consists of Lexie at the admiral's secure mansion, where she gets a bodyguard in the form of Mason Steele. Lexie finds Mason super hot, but they can never be together, because he wants a family one day, and she can't have kids because of a hysterectomy performed on her after a horrific car crash years earlier. She proceeds to behave like a tease for the entire time they are locked up together. Believe me, I hate using that term, but there is no other way to describe her, I'm afraid. She thinks Mason is hot, keeps coming on to him, leading him on, getting suggestive, and then always backing out when things look like they might progress. Mason is a gentleman and never says or even thinks one word against it, but Lexie's yo-yo behaviour was unfair and irresponsible.

This is plotless and free of suspense. Lexie's ex-boyfriend lurks in the shadows, aiming to get his hands on the Damascus Cache on behalf of a mysterious "leader", and muses about catching her and doing evil stuff that evil villains are supposed to do. But does he? No The climax takes up approximately a page and a half and the whole thing is wrapped up, of course not telling us who this "leader" is. The whole enterprise is just so stunningly pointless, comes with the usual "electric" touch when h/H first meet, and my big personal no-no of a character wriggling their eyebrows suggestively. (Does anybody not from a black and white movie even do that?)

Mason was hot and patient. My kind of hero. But even he can't save this, which is just rubbish from start to finish, and with its lack of plot, suspense, surprises and proper romance (unless the heroine being a tease is your kind of thing), barely has reason to exist.

I loved the suspense, action, and romance throughout this story. Years ago Lexie was in a car accident that almost killed. Now she finds out it wasn't a accident at all. The car that hit her was sending a message to the entire espionage community. Lexie's father was in the military. If he didn't cooperate and turn over information people would die. After the accident her father got out of the military, and was there by her side until she was better.

Lexie is a nanny to six kids. Helena was a movie star, and her husband was a high ranking officer. It was normal for this family to be surrounded by the CIA, NSA, and several assistant's.

There was a spark between Lexie, and Mason the first time they met. Mason loved the way she could take care of herself. She had armed men after her, and she took them down. When Mason was asked to be Lexie's bodyguard he didn't hesitate. The kids went away to summer camp, and Helena, and her husband went away to work. She had the house, if you could call it that all to herself. That is until Mason showed up.

Someone is after Lixie again. Is it the same guy coming back to finish the job from years ago?

Lexie wasn’t your normal nannie. Mason Steele could tell that from the moment she disabled six guys who were out to harm the children she was taking care of. Mason ends up being hired to guard Lexie and the kids while her employer was away from home. Whomever was after her wasn’t going to be deterred by a simple bodyguard and so Mason and Lexie knew they had their hands full protecting them all from a psychotic killer.

The story was good but it was slow in places when they were in the Aspen retreat. I enjoyed the concept and the characters the most. I would definitely like to read more from this author.

I paid for this with my own money.

A secret organization on a mission to steal something that only a retired Admiral has. A security agency hired to protect the retired Admiral and his family and a kick butt nanny with a secret past. Mason the head of TST Security definitely got more than he bargained for when he meets Lexie the nanny, how will he focus on the job when he finds the nanny so interesting?

This book was just a quick read. The plot wasn't that engaging, the characters were pretty flat and the pacing was atrocious. There was very little intrigue and I honestly wasn't impressed with the characters or their backstories. The romance was also completely rushed and didn't quite seem to even fit into the story. Defintely not the best romance book I have ever read.

Lexie took a job as a Nanny caring for 6 children. The man she is working for is a friend of her Dad's they served in the military together. The man is an Admiral and his wife is an actress.

This is one of those books that I found once I started I just could not put down. I really enjoyed it and think you will too. I haven't found a book of Cassie Miles that I didn't like.

Light read which is what I was wanting. I was amused with the heroine also being able to kick ass but her inner dialogue was annoying. The hero was a plus. The ending escalated too quickly & was over within two pages.
Overall, it didn’t suck.

It was okay... It was all pretty cheesy, the characters typical but likable, the romance was rushed, the 'intrigue' wasn't that intriguing and was extremely predictable... but whatever it was a quick and decent read. Didn't hate it.
