A very cool book for any fan of the Warhammer world's unique art style. Clint Langley is truly masterful. His detailed images juxtaposed upon some bleak and horrific landscape are the epitome of the grimdark style of the universe that coined the term with "...the grim darkness of the far future..."

Well if you've ever read a novel or looked at one of their Role Playing books, the detailed artwork that draws the eye? It was all this guy. From the fantasy side to the RPG books, to the novel covers, and even the card game art. His range (in terms of the subject matter is extensive) covers the entire map of Warhammer characters from Space Marines and Eldar to Norscan Reavers and the Mountain Clans of Dwarves. It is truly amazing in scope.

We also get Mr. Langley explaining how he thinks of certain things, how he models the art and even the interesting tidbit of using real-world backgrounds of places he's visited and taken pictures of, then edited and photoshopped into the hellish landscapes he uses as backgrounds. Also, interesting-he ALWAYS does the landscape/backgrounds first and then the characters to "fit the scene". Very interesting. Now I have no artistic ability whatsoever, thus I am always amazed by awesome and detailed art. I really liked the pencil sketches as well.

There are also various authors from the Warhammer novels giving their take on how Mr. Langley's art inspired them and helped them to write better characters. So after reading their comments, I looked closely at the art and I absolutely got it.

Now this is for the Warhammer fans who know what I'm talking about....which ones really stuck out? The kind that would make for a cool poster? Well, I thought Mr. Langley really hit it out of the park with the "Emperor's Champion" picture of a Black Templar in the regalia of the Emperor's Champion. In a word-awesome. I was also very impressed with his artwork concerning Chaos Space Marines. The Plague Marines do indeed convey a sense of distended, bloated horror completely at odds with the cerulan and gold gleaming armor of the Thousand Sons. There is a particular picture of a Plague Marine Defiler that is also quite impressive.

Other's that I liked was the more "uncommon" ones. They were not the major novel covers or the famous RPG books, but rather the offbeat card-art or promo art. This is where there are some true gems. I've been learning about Warhammer for a few years now and I've seen a lot of art-but these were so cool and new. I loved the Ork Gargant page. It truly shows the enormity of the thing, yet it is truly an odd-looking machine. One would think, wrongly, that an Imperial Titan would make mincemeat of one, but not so. Langely's also done a great job with the Eldar, both the fantasy and 40K versions. His Farseer art is stunning. As is all of the Malus Darkblade prints. Gorgeous.

What can I say? I was very surprised by this cool artwork collection. If you are a fan of Warhammer, this counts as a must-have. It helps your imagination with visualization for the immersive and massive world of Warhammer 40K and fantasy. Even if you can't tell The God Emperor from Wulfrik the Wanderer, if you are a fan or enjoy dark sci-fi and fantasy art, similar in style to Frank Frazetta, then this is a book you will love to flip through. Loved it!

Of the many Warhammer art books, this one focuses on the art of Clint Langley. He's Black Library's most prolific artists, responsible for creating the gritty art for the novel covers as well as the collectible card game. The Art of Clint Langley is a 96-page paperback.

The full colour illustrations within tell a story of a battle-torn universe. Each piece is created with painstaking detail, every last button, fringe of braid, battle scarred armour and textured coat. The scenes are intense, depicting never-ending battles. The weapon and armour designs are always elaborate. It certainly looks like every warrior is wearing armour made up of hundreds of parts. Everything's pretty extravagant, nitty gritty extravagant.

Some of the pieces have commentary provided by the authors. Clint Langley also wrote a bit of stuff, such as how he prepares as I've quoted below.

When I receive a brief, as soon as I read it, I can imagine the image in my head. To a certain extent I'll hear the soundtrack and see the image moving. I'll often stand around and move into poses to put myself in that moment. For instance, as soon as you mention Chaos Space Marine, I'm beginning to see the sky boil and a Khorne Berserker charging over the hill.

This is a great book for sci-fi, fantasy artists, as well as Warhammer fans.

his book contains beautiful color reproductions of some of the best art by Clint Langley. Combining illustrations from both the Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 game universes.
He has numerous paintings on covers in Black Library Books and on Combat Card Game.
Combining the paintings there are several commentaries by some of the book authors.
I think he can portrait the feeling that Warhammer 40k gives you...

One of my favourite book covers was portrait by him... Storm of Iron.
This book will give you almost no insight on the Warhammer or Warhammer 40k. But my the vivid images you can get the picture that the future does look grimm. Grimm, Dark and Hopelessness.
