As Peter Gurney makes clear, this book is not a substitue for proper veterinary care. However, it gives great advice on how to treat minor ailments and what to discuss with your vet in order to ensure that your pet has the best possible care. The more common guinea ailments are detailed in alphabetical order, making them easy to find. The problem is explained and then the author describes the care that the owner and the vet can each give. Like with people, much of the health of the guinea pig depends on the way in which it is looked after. Feeding is a key concern to the author and he details the approach that he thinks most suitable,in terms of both commercial and natural feeds.
I'm pleased to have added this crucial book to my Guinea pig library, with helpful hints and potions for helping a sick piggy, and knowing when to visit the vet.
In the history of the world, no one has written better books about guinea pigs than the late lamented Peter Gurney. I adored his books back in the 1990s when I was a guinea pig slave.
I loved Peter Gurney books so much that when I became homeless in England, I STILL wound up buying a Peter Gurney guinea pig book -- this one. I wondered if the piggy potions could work as people potions since getting a guinea pig was out of the question. I happened to think I was real witch at the time. This was before I went on Prozac.
However, my lack of rational mental functions did not screw up my appreciation for a good non-fiction book. I enjoyed reading this immensely. However, I have absolutely no memory of how my experiments with piggy potions on people turned out or what happened to my copy of this book.
That might have something to do with the LSD my (now) ex slipped to me one night. Three days later I woke up and a lot of things were missing. Sadly, the ex came back, though and it took a few more years to get rid of him.
I should have bypassed the ex completely and stuck with the guinea pigs.
I respect Peter Gurney for the guinea pig guru that he was, and I'm no expert myself, however I was surprised by some of the remedies suggested in this book. Having never tried most of them, who am I to say they don't work, though? It's certainly worth having on hand as a supplement to proper veterinary care, or when veterinary care or medicine is not available, or didn't seem to work. Also, the illustrations are adorable.
For anyone that loves Guinea Pigs, especially if you have a few, this book is invaluable. It deals with 'health care' and teaches some of the basics, while not replacing vets it is a Godsend for minor ailments
