This sensitive commentary on Jackie Robinson's life describes his childhood in Pasadena, through his years as a sports hero, to his later involvement in politics and the Civil Rights movement. Harvey Frommer has drawn upon interviews with Robinson's family, friends, and fellow ball players to tell the story of a courageous man who triumphed over bigotry and personal tragedy to take his place in the hearts of millions of Americans.
An informative, short book that's a quick read. I learned a bunch I didn't know, but I would have enjoyed more depth at nearly every turn. The writing is serviceable, but never outstanding and is sometimes clunky and confusing. Nevertheless, I recommend this book as an intro for anyone wanting a first glance at Jackie Robinson.
I read Jackie Robinson by Harvey Frommer. This is a biography of the incredible player, and person, Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson was an exceptional athlete. He lettered in four different sports. After college he played in the Negro Leagues. He could barely support his family. So he decided that he would quit the Negro Leagues the next year. Then Branch Rickey cane and wanted him to play for his minor league team. After the first season with the Montreals, he was signed to play for the Dodgers. He played a great career. After he retired, he continued to fight for civil rights. This book was really interesting. I learned a lot about Jackie Robinson and baseball. I normally don't like baseball but this book made it pretty interesting. I would recommend this book to people who love baseball. Also people who like to learn about the histories of star players. Boys would like this book way more than girls.
The book I read was Jackie Robinson by "Harvey Frommer." This book starts off with young Jackie Robison living in poor conditions. He and his friends would always be outside playing sports like baseball and basketball. As Jackie got older everybody was jealous of his uncommon talent in sports. He played basketball in high school and never expected to play Major League Baseball mostly because it was known as a white man's sport. Jackie was then thought of the best black player to handle the ruff situation of racism and still have great skills. What I liked about this book was how it was about my favorite sport and it is a great story of a man who broke the wall allowing more African Americans to play in the MLB. I didn't really dislike anything in this book. If I were to change anything in this book it would be to make this in first person. I rated this book a five star because I loved this book and it was a great story. I would recommend this book to anyone who really enjoys sports and/or great stories. They would enjoy this book just as much as I did.
When i watched the movie about Jackie Robinson I began to have a little interest in his life to see what it was like. i picked up this book and began to read it. as i kept reading it I found out how bad it must have been to be living in his shoes. everyone was picking on him and making fun of him. The book was inspiring to some people because he was the only colored man to change history in baseball.
