Each tale of The Hauntings of Kingston is a standalone novel with new characters that takes place in the enigmatic city of Kingston, Ontario. They have the chance of a lifetime... Tim and Brad have been best friends for years. They were college roommates and now share an apartment. They even share the predicament of being trapped in dead end jobs.
When a flash of inspiration strikes, they decide to open up a bed and breakfast. But their establishment is going to have a twist. They’re going to open ‘The Haunted Inn’. All the guys need to do is find a creepy old mansion, create some scary special effects and watch the money roll in. They hit the jackpot when they find a place with its own macabre history.
The chilly spot in the parlor? Bonus! The feeling of dread throughout the bedrooms? Yippee! When Sophie, Brad’s lover gives a dire warning, they take it as a seal of approval! Brad and Tim are rationalists. They’re going to be able to charge a premium from people who buy into superstitions and phony religion. This place is going to make them a fortune!
Besides, if there are any apparitions or ghostly appearances, they’ll be quite able to handle them. When you get right down to it, ghosts are a figment of the imagination. Right? It’s the dream of a lifetime! Or is it a deadly nightmare?
A writer and reader of eerie ghost novels, Michelle lives in Kingston, ' the limestone city' situated on Lake Ontario, with her husband and 2 pugs. The Hauntings of Kingston series was inspired by an evening doing the local ghost walk. She also writes Paranormal Women's Fantasy fiction under Shelley Dorey. Midlife, divorce and magic...oh my. Her 'Hex After 40' series is soon to be a TV series. Kind of a 'Desperate housewives flavor but with Witches!
Kingston, Ontario. Present day. Michelle Dorey’s Haunted Inn (The Hauntings of Kingston #2) is a quick read on a subject that is very apropos at this time of year with All Hallows’ Eve soon to be upon us. This story centers on two best friends when one decides running a ‘haunted’ B & B or inn would bring in lots of money, and these two young men would be set for life. Neither one is truly satisfied with their present jobs. Thus, Brad and Tim begin to look for a house the would become their Haunted Inn. Enter: a mansion with a lake and a fair amount of land which these friends are able to buy for an acceptable amount a good amount under the listing price. My first question is why? The house is in good condition with not too much renovation to consider. On the initial walk-through Tim looks out the window from the top floor and notices the realtor leaning against her car. Again I ask why, but Tim also sees an antique rocking chair rocking back and forth although empty. Creepy but good for business, he thinks. This story has possibles for hauntings, but what really bothered me was the continued use of inappropriate language. I taught high school, and I am no prud, but the author would have benefitted from using different language. I know the paranormal is ‘out there’, but this story just did not go far enough to be believable as well as it just appears to skim the surface in all areas. 2.5 stars.
When you admire Alfred Hitchcock and Edgar Allan Poe so much for what bumps in the night, it seems unfair to read a book like this one and expect something similar. While "Haunted Inn" isn't "bad" per se, it gets cut off at the knees just when the haunting is building up. If you have read and/or watched the "The Shining" by Stephen King, it is impossible to not make comparisons.
Tim and Brad have been friends for years. They were roommates in college and now share an apartment. Both Tim and Brad are not happy in their current jobs. Tim and Brad, come up with the idea of opening a Haunted Inn. They thought, if they could find the right house and some special haunted effects, that the money would start rolling in. Now all that half to do, is located a creepy looking house. Brad and Tim, were looking at this house that was perfect. The real estate agent, who was showing them the old mansion, could not wait to get out of this place. The house has a history behind it. A family named Baxter lived in this house many years ago. The family was brutally murder and it is said, that their spirits still walk the halls of this house. Brad and Tim both think, ghosts are figments of the imagination. The first time Brad's girlfriend Sophie goes to the house, she gets this eerie feeling, that something is not right here. She warns the both of them, not to buy the house. The parlor is a chilly spot, where a rocking chair, rocks all by itself. Brad takes a picture of Tim inside the house. To Brad surprise, there is a strange man faces that appears in back of Tim. Brad quickly deletes the picture and now knows that they are not alone. This is the first book that I have read by Michelle Dorey. This was a good story, that was well written. This is a stand alone book. There are other books in The Haunting of Kingston Series. I plan on checking out other works by this author.
An entertaining short ghost story, let down by the fact I didn't like any of the characters except, perhaps, The Beast!
Tim was cocky, Brad was a wet blanket pretending to be cocky. Sophie was self righteous and Carly seemed a bit of a ditz. The others were just filler. More info about the actual killings would have kept my interest for longer but as it was I was fine with the fact it was a short story.
Note for Kindle readers: this ends at 40% and there is another story by the same author following it.
Nowhere near as good as the first book, which was just far enough off the usual mark that it made for a great story. This one is well-written, but the story itself is hokey and the wrap-up felt both forced and derivative. It's Amityville all over again, but without the urge to keep reading. I wish I had stopped before the last two chapters and used my imagination for the rest. I was disappointed that was all she could come up with, because I really expected much better after the first book.
Having now read all five volumes, I would definitely recommend reading the first, The Haunting of Crawley House. It's unique in the series. Then I would skip the next two and read the fourth The Haunting of Larkspur Farm - the other two aren't significantly different, other than in the details of the families involved. Book four had a more interesting set-up than the previous two. Finally read book five, The Ghosts of Hanson House. It's also unique in the series.
Two friends Tim and Brad decide to buy an old mansion at a really cheap price to turn it into a haunted bed and breakfast. It had been the scene of a murder suicide in the past and turns out the place really was haunted by a particularly evil entity. Well written, fast paced particularly in the climactic sections, with believable characters. Recommended reading for lovers of this genre.
To buy a hotel to scare people is bad enough but to buy one already haunted is dumb, especially when you know nothing about it!!! Of course, feminine intuition is ignored but proves valuable when needed! Too short a story, and though Legacy is good, to have it take up most of the percentage of the book is getting annoying! I have read all the 'Haunted' books in this series, but they should be referred to as Novella's!
Tim and Brad buy a house and make into a haunted inn. Sophie, Brad's girlfriend, warns them it is an evil house. As they prepare the house, Tim and Brad start experiencing strange and frightening events. The evil slowly grows and becomes more dangerous. I like the first story very much. The second one, I couldn't even finish.I disliked Keira a lot. She was a spoiled and whiney brat.
What a traumatic experience for the four protagonists. I am sure the idea was a good one in the beginning but they soon found out what an evil spirit can do. I have no problem visiting a haunted house but I do not think I could live there. Sophie seems to have a special ability that would be useful if one needed to enter a house. I guess a good idea would be to not ignore signs of bad intentions, whether it is real or perceived.
Love paranormal and mystery and this book popped up on the recommended. Nothing better than mixing the two! Excited to read the next book in the series and find out more about Keira and Gwen. Oh, and the grandfather, because once you read this book you know they are not leaving that rock unturned. Love finding new authors to read!!
Looking forward to finishing this series so I can finish the other one " Mystical veil " by same author. Both series are great. They must be because housework here hasn't gotten done for the last 2 days. I have been glued to my fire. Thank you for writing. I'm headed to book 3 of the "Hauntings of Kingston" now.
I liked this a lot despite the fact that Tim and Brad are unlikable. Tony had more sense than the lot of them. Brad's awful, but Tim's the worst. Sophie was okay. Carly didn't have enough fear. I can't believe the ending. Rinse. Repeat. Brad and Tim got better than they deserve. The narrator was great.
Michelle Dorey has a way of telling stories that draw you in, empathizing with her characters until they become old friends. I have yet to read anything she’s done that did not keep me fully entertained!
Other than some corny stuff said by the characters from time to time, this was a really good read about two friends who decide to open a haunted inn. They just didn't expect it to be truly haunted. Do they run for it, or will they keep it?
Enjoyed this immensely! It has a great cast of characters and really found the story line a real page turner. I've enjoyed Michelle Dory's ghost stories very much! She's an incredible extremely talented author!
Scary happenings, strong characters and a well written plot are everything needed to make this a must read for haunted house fans. Another great series from Michelle Dorey!
Wow what a great book by Michelle Dorey. The story moved fast and left you wondering what would happen next. It's not a book you'll want to put down. Give it a try, I think you'll really enjoy this read. I'm presently reading all her books. So far they are all extremely good reads.
I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read. Though it seemed like there could have been so much more to the story. But if you are looking for a quick ghostly book I would recommend this. I do enjoy Michelle Doreys books.
Another great read, thoroughly entertaining, really enjoying this series. I do have the full series and I will get to the next one, but I'm going to try something different for a change of pace. I recommend this series and more importantly this author.
This book is about two friends who decide to open a haunted inn. They just didn't expect it to be truly haunted. I have read about 4 of her books this week. Could not put them down.
Another well written haunted story by Michelle Dorey. I feel like their is more to this story. It's one of those books where it leaves you wanting to read more.
When buying a haunted property, always take the time to learn who, or what, is haunting it. Otherwise, you could find yourself more invested than you want to be.
