An elegant and informative survey of ancient Greek literature, with a good amount of attention paid to historical context, as well as art and architecture. It's full of bon mots and written with verve and clarity; the author's love for his subject and his erudition is apparent throughout. The author’s references to the reception of the Greek classics in France and his comparisons to French authors was a pleasant novelty for me. Also a pleasant surprise for a book of this period was the considerable attention paid to various Greek author's views on women.
