Terminei a leitura deste livro com a sensação de ter vivido, com todas as suas personagens, uma vida apaixonante e intensa. Já li vários livros da autora e, embora tenha gostado de todos eles, este superou as minhas expectativas e tornou-se claramente no meu preferido de Elizabeth Adler.

These two books from the "de Courmon saga" were definitely not the best of Elizabeth. Something happened in these books that I do not recognize in the other books I read by the author. It was really easy not to like this story and I must say that I was truly disappointed with the quality of this book.
Elizabeth's books usually are a source of entertainment for me (most especially because of the places she talks about - it makes me travel in one seating). But this was nothing like I was used to in her books.

For such a silly, ridiculous book, it was pretty enjoyable. The story focuses primarily on Peach de Courmont and Noel Maddox, two individuals from completely opposite backgrouds. Peach is the wealthy, beautiful heiress and Noel is the poor orphan who has to work his way up through the ranks in the automobile industry. Of course their paths cross a couple times before they eventually decide they're in love and get married.
My complaints: the ending. Noel seems like a decent, if slightly cold, man throughout the book, but near the end he suddenly becomes a huge jerk and helps Peach out of a situation just to try to get a job at her company. It's not really made clear if he married her for the same reason. Then he has a one night stand with a former (married) flame. Finally he visits the orphanage where he grew up and magically has a change of heart and realizes Peach is all he wants in life. Lame. Don't even get me started on Peach's random obsession and eventual marriage to some writer.
Then there is the fact that Peach was barely a factor in the beginning; the main focus was on her sister, Lais. That was all well and good, but then she was barely mentioned the last part of the book. It had me wondering what the point was in including her in the first place.
Finally, I'm assuming Adler has written another book about Peach's grandmother, Leonie. This book had Leonie reminiscing about her past which was annoying since I didn't really know what was going on.
All in all, an ok book that met my mediocre expectations. Very implausible, but it kept me entertained. I give it a C-.

Desilusão.
Eis como posso descrever.
Depois de um livro inteiro, que acompanha a vida de Peach e Noel, atravessando continentes, com uma abordagem muito interessante da segunda guerra mundial, e quando finalmente se encontram e juntos iniciam a sua vida ele trai a mulher que ama e que desejou desde criança?
A sua ambição faz com que destrua a confiança que ela tem nele.
Mas pior, depois disso ele não luta pelo seu amor e continua a sua busca pelo poder.
Incompreensível também que ela desculpe antes mesmo de existir o pedido de desculpa.
Que desilusão!
Que nem mesmo o final consegue apagar.

Um livro um pouco diferente dos habituais romances da
autora , mas encantou-me esta maravilhosa estória.
Um livro sobre o poder e a força de vontade , começa com o nascimento de Peach de Courmont e o de um pequeno orfão Noel Madodox.Entre o luxo dos Courmont e a extrema pobreza do pequeno Noel vai se construindo está bela estória de perseverança e vitorias.Gostei.

I was expecting much more from this novel. The first half was intriguing with Lais and Peach aiding the Resistance during the occupation of France during the war.
Noel Maddox also was an interesting character, but themn Adler went on and on and on about the Auto Industry and I lost interest.
I wasn't prepared for the direction the second half of the book took, I was disappointed.

Every time I picked up this book, I was completely immersed in it to the point of being unaware of my surroundings. I love it when that happens. The Nazi occupation part was really terrifying. It's basically a romance, but lots of stuff going on.

Always a good summer beach read. I realized halfway through that Peach is actually the sequel to (the now out-of-print....OF COURSE!) Leonie by Elizabeth Adler. It's on order from amazon. Can't wait to read the front-story to this novel!

Um livro difícil de largar e bastante grande! Complexo, com romance, ambição, tragédia mas com um final à altura. Continuação de 'Sombras de Paixão ' abarca um grande espaço temporal com descrições de França durante a segunda guerra. 4 * bem merecidas. Recomendo mas leiam primeiro o anterior.

Noaptea era neagră, fără nicio licărire de lună sau măcar a unei singure stele, iar vântul rece scormonea prin câmpii, foşnind pe întinderile de lanuri de cereale fără de sfârşit, ca un cântec de leagăn trist.
Fata era tânără. Rochia ei ieftină, de vară, imprimată violent, se lipea de trupul ei prea slab, în timp ce se străduia să iasă din maşină cu povara ei. Stând în mijlocul drumului, se uita cu îndoială la aleea cu pietriş. Nu zărea decât silueta unei clădiri mari, luminată de strălucirea pâlpâitoare a unei singure lămpi.
— Du-te! Grăbeşte-te, hai! îi comandă o voce de bărbat din maşină. Fă-o şi hai s-o întindem de-aici.
Împiedicându-se în tocurile înalte, fata merse pe aleea întunecată, respirând repede, strângând bocceaua la piept, tăindu-i-se respiraţia de durere când îşi scrânti glezna pe pietrişul înşelător. Drumul îi păru nesfârşit, întunecos şi presărat cu pericole necunoscute. Un drum care avea să o despartă de viitorul ei.
Nişte trepte roase de spălatul repetat al unor mâini încăpăţânate străluciră brusc în lumina lămpii. Tremurând, îşi lăsă jos povara, înfăşurând mai bine păturica albastră şi controlând acul de siguranţă care o ţinea să nu se desfacă. Ridicându-şi ochii, ea citi firma scrisă cu litere din fier forjat: Orfelinatul de binefacere, MADDOX, creat 1885. Îşi plecă ochii spre bocceaua albastră nemişcată.
— Nu laşi niciun mesaj, îi spuse bărbatul, niciun bileţel, altfel o să poată să te găsească.
Vântul bătu pe alee, îngheţând-o, şi ea se uită ezitând la clopoţelul lustruit, de alamă, de la uşă. Putea să sune şi apoi să fugă. Va fi deja plecată când va răspunde cineva. Dar dacă nu va reuşi?
Lumina lămpii prinse pentru o clipă strălucirea pală a picioarelor ei şi pantofii subţiri, roşii, cu toc cui, în timp ce ea se întoarse şi o luă la fugă, împiedicându-se în pietriş, alergând înapoi pe alee, spre maşina care aştepta şi spre amantul ei. Era liberă.
Sunetul brusc al motorului şi trăncănitul ţevii de eşapament nefixate treziră copilul din somn. Luptându-se cu învelişul de scutece, începu să plângă, mai întâi cu un sunet slab, apoi mai tare, până deveni un ţipăt. Un strigăt puternic de furie.
Două femei în cămăşi de noapte din flanel şi cu bigudiuri traseră zăvoarele masive şi deschiseră larg uşa.
— Alt copilaş! îi spuse una celeilalte. E al treilea luna asta; ce-o să ne facem cu toţi?
— Oamenii n-ar trebui să facă plozi pe care nu-i vor, mormăi cealaltă, aplecându-se să ridice pachetul următor.
— Doamne, ăsta o să ne facă greutăţi, auzi-l cum urlă.
— O să chem poliţia, zise prima, nu poate să fi ajuns prea departe.
— Ba e destul de departe. Am auzit o maşină. Aici suntem prea aproape de limita ţinutului. Ar fi trebuit să se gândească la asta, când au construit clădirea. Se aduc aici plozi din patru ţinuturi şi n-avem şanse să le găsim mamele. Ei, ce-i, fată ori băiat?
Femeia desfăcu păturica şi ridică pruncul cu faţa roşie, care ţipa în continuare.
— Un băiat, zise ea, nu mai mare de câteva zile.
— Ar fi mai bine să-l ducem sus şi să-i dăm un biberon. Poate că n-o să mai urle, altfel îi scoală pe toţi.
Înfăşurând în jurul lui păturica albastră, se mişcară prin holul rece, întunecat.
— Cum să-i spunem? o întrebă una pe cealaltă, în timp ce urcau scara fără covor.
— Noel, răspunse ea cu fermitate.
— Dar suntem în aprilie, protestă cealaltă. Noel e un nume care se dă copiilor care se nasc în ziua de Crăciun.

Um livro que segue a história da incrível Leonie, focando-se nas suas 3 netas e especialmente, na neta que partilha com Monsenhor e que tem alguns dos traços dele, traços que lhe vão trazer sofrimento.
É também a história de Noel, um self made man que consegue fugir dos escombros de uma vida de orfão até chegar ao lugar mais alto que alguém pode ansear, sempre com muito trabalho, para perceber que nem tudo é dinheiro e poder.
Voltamos à vila de Léonie e ao hotel que lhe está adjacente, agora com a supervisão da sua neta leone. Conhecemos a neta Lais que a forte Leónie tem de resgatar da sua própria vida e também a sua neta mais velha que ficou com ela durante a guerra e que com ela aprende a ultrapassar as debilidades de uma doença de infância. Percebemos que Léonie continua a ser uma força da natureza e que a sua história com Monsenhor ainda está viva dentro dela sem nunca deixar de estar realizada na sua vida de hoje com Jim.
A vida das três jovens e da sua avó estão intimamente interligadas pelo amor e admiração por Léonie e é ela que emerge como pilar para as netas. Passamos ainda pela 2ª guerra mundial, pelas limitações e perigos de quem a viveu pela força forma como várias pessoas tentaram sobreviver e colaborar com a resistência. A guerra vai transformar Laís e Leonore e a vida vai ensinar a Peach que nem tudo é uma fantasia, da pior forma. As 3 vão emergir pessoas diferentes e é interessante ver este crescimento nas personagens e a importância de Léonie nos momentos importantes de cada uma.
Sobre Noel, gostava de ter visto mais sobre ele no final. Peach conta-lhe algumas coisas da sua vida, faltou-me que ele desabafasse mais sobre o seu passado e como isso o moldou.

Romance que segue a vida da personagem que lhe dá o nome no original, Peach (de Courmont), uma rica herdeira de uma linhagem francesa. É interessante, mas não é daqueles que não se quer largar. Apresenta uma perspetiva sobre o mundo da fabricação de automóveis em França e nos EUA, que é interessante. Segue-se a família de Peach. As irmãs gémeas mais velhas (por parte de mãe) apresentam alguns episódios interessantes da altura da II Guerra, mas depois quase desaparecem do enredo. A sua avó, Léonie, é uma daas figuras mais fortes e em destaque e percebi que há um livro que conta a sua história. Há uma personagem masculina de destaque, Noel Madox, cuja importância é grande, mas cujas origens necessitariam de outra explicação (ou talvez não). Há coisas um pouco mal explicadas e personagens mal aproveitadas ou deixadas de parte quando nos estão a interessar. Como abarca um grande período de tempo, alguns aspetos são apenas transmitidos de forma superficial, o que lhe tira algum do interesse que poderia ter.

I've read most of Adler's books, including the prequel Leonie. I liked Leonie and felt it to be a better story than Peach--more substance. There were too many characters to follow in Peach and some of them were lost in the storytelling. I would recommend reading Leonie first and then Peach soon thereafter to be able to follow the storyline.

Excellent read. Full of rich detail, exceptional characters.
An excellent historical fiction of the coming together of the classes bound by the Auto industry. Spanning the world the beautifully developed characters come to life in the throes of passion and heartache. All with their own secrets that have or threaten to keep them from true love.

Entretenidisimo. Secuela de LEONIE. Lo recomiendo muchisimo aunque si se lee antes LEONIE (abuela de Peach) se entenderá todo mejor. Algunos personajes son realmente intetesantes (Peach y Noel). No sé por qué Lais me gustó mucho menos. Me ha dado pena haberlo terminado!

Este livro foi a minha estreia com a autora e foi uma excelente forma de começar.
A história gira em torno de Peach de Courmont, herdeira de uma família rica e que foi habituada a ter o que queria. E através da vida de Peach vamos conhecendo a sua família, a sua avó Leonie e o marido Jim, os pais Amelie e Gerald, e as suas meias-irmãs Lais e Leonore.
Tornando assim, a história com mais alguns focos de interesse, e não só sobre Peach. Desde pequena que Peach é muito decidida e que sabe o que quer, principalmente quando decide casar.
Uma das partes que mais gostei foi quando a acção se desenrola durante a 2ª Guerra Mundial, quando os nazis invadem França e acabam por requisitar o hotel da família, e avó e netas tentam ajudar a Resistência Francesa.
Para além da família de Courmont, acompanhamos também Noel Maddox, criado num orfanato, e que foi subindo na vida, graças ao seu trabalho.
E se estamos, logo desde o início, à espera do envolvimento do par romântico, é algo que vai demorar e que me agradou bastante desta opção, pois torna a história mais rica em termos de acontecimentos.
A escrita é muito acessível e apesar de ter quase 500 páginas, os capítulos são relativamente pequenos e a história é bastante interessante, fazendo-nos avançar rapidamente.
Gostei bastante da avó Leonie e vou querer ler o livro "Sombras de Paixão" que é centrado na vida desta personagem.

August 8, 2011My second foray into the work of Elizabeth Adler wasn’t quite as satisfying as the first (The Secret of Villa Mimosa) but it was nonetheless, an amazingly interesting tale.
We begin with the birth of Peach in the early 30s to wealthy French and parents well established in the hostelry industry. There is a bi-generational link between the hotel folks and a family that owns what was a top-end automotive corporation in France. Peach adores her ne’er-do-well half sister who accompanies her from her home in Florida to the Côte d'Azur for a visit with their grandmère. Peach contracts polio, war breaks out, and the young girl is trapped in France. She works for the resistance, the war ends, she gets educated in Switzerland before returning to the U.S. and Radcliff. Concurrently, a determined orphan from Iowa fights his way to the top of Motor City.
Maybe I’m just a male chauvinist pig, but it has always been my experience that men relate more to problem solving action rather than the conceptually vague quantity that comprises “romance.” This book contains both – a good read.

Blah! In my opinion, this book just droned on and on. It basically follows "Peach" from the time of her birth until after the birth of her third child. Simultaneously, the book covers the life of Noel for the same span of time. Both characters experience lots of sadness and infidelity but eventually, join back together at the end of the book for the birth of Peach's third child and Noel's second child. In my opinion, too much was going on in the book, with too many characters for the development of anyone. Debated whether to give this book 1 star of 2 but chose two because at points it was a tad interesting but not for long.
