Bored and beautiful, Jeannie is trapped at her high school reunion. Desperate for attention and validation her husband won’t give, she submits to the advances of a stranger. She soon faces a choice with no good options. This short erotic novella explores lust and limits from both the male and female perspectives, with an intensity that will reverberate for days after reading.
Joshua Edward Smith is the author of five fiction novels in a variety of genres (the financial thriller ‟Singularity”, the award-winning contemporary women's fiction novel ‟Apotheosis”, and the erotic ‟Entropy” trilogy), several shorter works, and innumerable blog posts and tweets. He is also a technology executive, jazz musician, ballroom dancer, and father of three. He lives in central Massachusetts.
"It is better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done."
This novella is an interesting body of work from author Joshua Edward Smith. Without spoiling things, the story sidesteps some of the author's mainstay plot devices and becomes a better read for it. Faster, more suspenseful, more dangerous, riskier. Even incorporates short changes in POV, but it is done brilliantly as a way to experience the psychology of both people (and genders) without being filler or repetitive.
If you've read any of the author's other work, then yes, this is also filthy and shocking, but perhaps for the first time, there's an air of fearless romance that reads like instinctual actions instead of carefully-planned debauchery. Captivating and dark, "Regrets" will stick with you for quite some time, just like that hotel key card you forgot to return.
Another story where two strangers meet. He immediately identifies her as a submissive (don't they always?) and invites her to his room. Should she go, or shouldn't she – she's married. Either way she'll have regrets. She goes of course. Then follows a description of their antics in the usual mechanical way. Unoriginal and not remotely erotic.
Having loved both Entropy and Duality, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Regrets. Unfortunately life's distractions kept me from getting to it as quickly as I would've liked, but once I started I couldn't stop.
Regrets is a novella, which I typically do not enjoy because I feel they either lack in plot or characterization--or worse, both. However, Mr. Smith does an amazing job of allowing the situation and the actions of the scene define the characters for you. They feel incredibly natural and it is easy to picture them as people you know.
The way this gifted author utilizes multiple POVs for this story seems effortless. In doing so, he shows us the psychology for both the Dom and the sub, but at no point does the switch in POV ever seem clunky or forced. We experience exactly what we are meant to in order to truly appreciate what is going on.
By the end, you're completely invested in finding out what happens next, only to realize it has ended--which may seem frustrating at first, but then you realize it's just the author's way of doling out some delicious delayed satisfaction until you pick up his next read... which you will.
While my interests are not completely along these lines I enjoyed the story and point of view from each of the participants. Feeling invisible is a lonely and terrible thing. The idea of being noticed, adored and appreciated... Lovely. A good read.
I thought this was a sexy and hot story. Jeannie is at a high school reunion and being ignored by everyone including her husband. A total stranger smiles at her and draws her across the room to him. I wish the story would've gone further. Did they hook up again? Did Jeannie leave her husband for her Master?
