Ukrainian birth, heritage, and upbringing of Gogol influenced many of his written works among the most beloved in the tradition of Russian-language literature. Most critics see Gogol as the first Russian realist. His biting satire, comic realism, and descriptions of Russian provincials and petty bureaucrats influenced later Russian masters Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Turgenev, and especially Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Gogol wittily said many later Russian maxims.
Gogol first used the techniques of surrealism and the grotesque in his works The Nose , Viy , The Overcoat , and Nevsky Prospekt . Ukrainian upbringing, culture, and folklore influenced his early works, such as Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka .
His later writing satirized political corruption in the Russian empire in Dead Souls .

Потрясающая книга, мне очень понравилась! А юмор —типично Гоголевский! Очень хорошая книга, всем советую прочитать 😊

This (I mean Вечера на хуторе близ Диканьки and perhaps Миргород, too) is one of the most wonderful books I have ever read. It is funny and scary, yet full of love. Some might think it moss-grown... which is and is not true. Yes, things and deeds depicted might have long sunk into oblivion, only that does not make reading the book any less interesting. More interesting, if anything.
I do believe it`s a pity the book(s) can hardly be translated into English properly.

На каникулах показывала детям Петрова и Васечкина, заодно решила перечитать первоисточник :) как мало из Ревизора понятно в детстве! Какая укатайка!
