This is an absolutely delightful collection of dozens of classic nursery rhymes. Most of these are anonymous, being a part of traditional English folklore for hundreds of years, but others are attributed (correctly) to popular children's authors of the past few centuries. I remembered many of these rhymes from my childhood days, but many were also unfamiliar to me -- and therefore became surprising discoveries of poems that I had missed out on when I was a child.
What I especially appreciated about the book is that the text is in very large and easily readable print. The illustrations were also colorful and well-drawn, so it was easy to see how the pictures went along with the poems. Finally, to top it all off, there's an index of first lines of each nursery rhyme at the back of the book, so that favorite poems can be found quickly and easily.
All in all, a delightful treat from cover to cover -- a wonderful reminiscence of my childhood days and more poems that I can share with family and friends!
A very good collection of Nursery Rhymes that I have been using throughout the week for my class. I read through it today and enjoyed thinking about how I could use them with my class. Most of these I knew, but there were a couple that I had never seen before. I recommend this for anyone who wants a collection of Nursery Rhymes. It's perfect for that.
Fun collection of nursery rhymes. This may not have all of the western rhymes, but it does have way more than I remember as a kid. As an adult, it is fun reading these and seeing the utter darkness we loved singing about as kids (think famine, plague, death, robbery, possibly catabolism, and corrupt monarchy). Obviously there isn't much narrative arc. Also they are not organized by title, theme, length, nor any rhyme or reason. Still, the illustrations make it nice for the kids. If you know the tunes (I did not for most of them), it can be fun trying to make up a rhythm. In the end, a very fine collection that will delight your little one and terrify you. Poor "old man." He died at least three times!
