I've spent years fighting my feelings for her, but I can't do it any longer.Sam Harper, left tackle for the Barnett Bulldogs, has been my best friend since we were fourteen years old. Unfortunately, he sees himself as my unofficial big brother, which means the guy is a major cock block. He must have a sixth sense when it comes to me getting laid. It's frustrating how I can be on the verge of sealing the deal when Sam will appear out of nowhere, and suddenly my night is going up in a big ball of sexually frustrated flames.I think the guy enjoys messing with me. Why else would he take such perverse pleasure in doing it?Exactly.I'm thinking that Sam needs a girlfriend. Maybe then he'd stop trying to get in my way all the time.Except...I'm starting to notice things about Sam that I definitely shouldn’t be noticing. Like his piercing blue eyes that pin me in place. Or his short blond hair that I want to drag my fingers through. Not to mention those killer abs I sometimes catch a glimpse of when he stretches in class. The strange feelings that have sprung up in me are definitely starting to freak me out. I mean, we’ve always been friends and I don’t want that to change. What I need is for our relationship to slide back to the way it's always been. We have eight solid years of friendship behind us. That's not something I'm willing to throw away on a bit of sexual attraction that will eventually fizzle out.No matter how tempted I might be.

New adult sports romance--check. Friends-turned-to-lovers plot--check. An author that I could really get addicted to (if I'm not yet)--big fat check.
Although I started this series with the third book, Liam's book, I became instantly hooked on JS's style of easy prose. It made for an equally easy reading as these books feel like novellas when they are really full-length novels. Yep, there's a certain groove going through these books.
I'm such a sucker for these new adult romances with sports jock heroes that are written just panty-melting-ly hot right. Add the friends-to-lovers storyline and I'm pretty much a goner. I really liked how Sam and Violet's relationship developed gradually and did not go immediately to "shit, I want my best friend" overdrive. It only showed they both cared about their friendship enough not to rush into anything just because they were starting to look at each other in a different light.
There was no over-the-top drama and that's how I like my new adult romances. I hope this series doesn't stop at three books because I'm addicted and I need another hit. Soon!
Love Sam, but couldn't Violet have been portrayed as less of a blonde stereotype?
This book was frustrating on many levels, though I don't disagree this writer's a good storyteller. First of all, to have Violet be so over-the-top clueless is an insult to curvy, beautiful blondes everywhere. I mean, she literally referred to a girl who could be her twin double as Sam's perfect type of woman, and kept insisting they were "just friends" when she no longer looked at him that way. Anyone with half a brain would recognize the acute awareness of a man's scent, muscles, looks, and other attributes as attraction, but not Violet! That was simply too much to accept, along with the other ridiculous denials and assurances to everyone who would listen to her that Sam was "just a friend." I began to really despair for the seriously warped idea of blonde mentality and intelligence the writer was conveying, and felt offended on their behalf ( I am brunette).
Sam truly saved this story, no thanks to Violet. She made so many illogical and moronic decisions I almost quit reading. I even began skimming because I found her so annoying. I recall the same reaction to another one of this writer's books, so I'm wondering how she carries out these plots and details -- does it just come to her, or is she so caught up in a certain concept she has to go on and on about it? All I have to say is, it's like beating a dead horse. Idiot blonde behavior and decisions are repetitious, along with stereotypical behavior patterns. It all makes for predictable storylines and boring rhetoric. Three and a half stars. Liked and enjoyed King of Campus much more.
This was just perfect! A friends to lovers kind of story - nothing out of the ordinary here. A hot football player, Sam, and his best friend Violet. But instead of him being a manwhore as you read so many times, he is just a normal guy - neither banging every girl available, nor a virgin. The same goes for Violet. The two of them were best friends for eight years. Sam's been in love with Violet ever since, but Violet only ever saw him as a friend. Until she starts seeing more in him. The story was quite predictable, but I didn't mind one bit. Both Violet and Sam were so lovable, although I wanted to slap some sense into Violet at times. I enjoyed every minute of this book! I'm really looking forward to read Liam's story. I may already be a little bit in love with him after his appearance in this one...
I love a friends to lovers romance. Sam Harper and Violet Winterfield have been best friends for eight years. From the time Vi lost her parents and moved to her grandparents' home. They've never crossed that line, although it's been Sam's wish to do so since his hormones kicked in. But he's been forced to watch Vi drift from one meaningless relationship to the other. He's no manwhore-he tried screwing her out of his head with a bunch of one night stands, but he learned his lesson and nothing is going to make him move on from her.
Both of them are about to enter law school. Sam may be the big shot in football on campus, but he has no desire to go pro. He has a photographic memory so studying is no big deal for him. Vi struggles to keep her grades up but has no idea where she will end up for her law degree. But that's not her only stressor these days-for some reason she's starting to see Sam in a different light. Like a want to lick your abs kind of light. What the hell is going on? They've been best friends forever, why is she starting to have these feelings?
I loved this story-it's right up there with Ms. Sucevic's King of Campus. (Roan makes a couple of appearances in this book too) Vi screws up a few times, there's some nice angst and a couple of my eyes almost got wet moments. Check this one out-the Barnett Bulldogs series is well worth the read!
I did enjoy the story and I really did like the characters. The only problem I had with this one was that it dragged on a little and it became a bit repetitive at times. Having said that I loved Sam &Violet. Can't wait to read Liam's book now
Yet another book that could have been amazing, but the heroine was just plain STUPID. I didn't like her, she was annoy- ing and clueless. I have to wonder if any one is really this dumb. Sam was awesome and deserved soooo much more than what he settled for.
listen, i’m a sucker for a good childhood friends-to-lovers arc. it’s my kryptonite, my achilles’ heel, my “one more chapter at 2 a.m.” this book? no different. but, thank the bookish gods, it hit all the right notes and kept things realistic. the male lead? a football player, sure, but not the kind destined for the nfl. no million-dollar contracts here, just pure emotional touchdowns.
the drama? oh, it was juicy. the tension between the main duo was so palpable i wanted to scream into a pillow (and maybe i did). the guy waiting for her? constant anguish? sign me up for that slow-burn pain. every longing glance and heartfelt moment had me clutching my chest like a 19th-century romantic heroine.
and that ending? perfection. tied it all up with a bow so cute!! ugh, i’m such a sucker for these kinds of books.
Loved this one for the tension, not so much on the plot. Heroine is a blonde with brown eyes, then there's the hero who was dubbed "Golden Delicious" for being the brawny Viking-esque character by the heroine's irresponsible bad roommate (worse as a friend). Plot twist: hero has photographic memory. Couple fights over the hero's leaked nude photo (not full frontal) that the bad roommate's bitchy friends spread without the heroine's knowledge. Risk of scandal can potentially override hero's father's political career as a senator. It's really frustrating reading the smut scenes, something I never imagined happening in a YA novel. I mean, when did they start having sex? Right after eating the girl's pussy? When did it happen? The other fucked up (or maybe psychologically understandable - read up defensive substitution) thing was the hero seeking out other women that bear a resemblance to the best friend he lusts after (blonde, soft brown eyes, lush figure). It fails to give characters depth, with an overused trope to be the basis of a plot. For crying out loud, these kids are in college. Can they not stereotype every other law student in this age group as party-going, law-school yuppie types? These books aggravate that negative image people have on the YA genre. It's Legally Blonde all over again.
I adore friends to lovers stories. I really do. But maybe it was because King of Campus was just such a fun book, I didn’t enjoy this as much. Violet started to get on my nerves after the incident and wouldn’t accept moving past it. When Sam clearly wanted to just put it behind them. But hey, Sam also bothered me through out the whole book. I get it, his dad is senator. But expecting your kid to never get into any trouble is just preposterous. Sam is 22, they made way too big a deal out of the dad being senator, he’s not the freaking president. Not everyone is watching their every move. I more or less started skimming about 60% through because of losing interest, busy wanting to know the outcome.
I have no intention to read the last book in the series because as much as I love Liam, I can’t stand a whiny female lead! Hoping this author has other good books though based off the first book in the series. ❤️
Nope. Nope. I cant deal with this book. It taking far too long for the main heroin to get in her head that she'd feeling for her best friend. Come on, is she plain clueless or just plain stupid? The pacing was all over the place. Little dialogue and too much descriptive sentences which is one of my biggest pet peeve. I dont want you to explain the relationship and you to show it or better yet express it.
I love best friend romances but I couldnt finish this. The pacing was so awful; probably bc there wasnt much story there. I would read 20 pages about just one night and it would always end with the scene ending before they do the deed. WTF? It got pretty old.
DNF @ 65% Rating: 2.5

I gotta say I am a sucker for a story with PINING/where one of the characters has been in love forever. Add to that a wonderful, not obnoxious (maybe a little shy) male lead and I was looking forward to this one!
The problem with friends to lovers trope is that there has to be an actual SOLID not ludicrous barrier for them to not be together. Sadly this book didn’t have that.
Friend Zoned is a typical NA College story where the “heroine” (which she isn’t) refuses to see what’s right in front of her, and instead keeps running away. Over and over again. And keeps hurting the male lead. Over and over again. Plus some stupid drama thrown in.
The Pros —
👍 a male lead that isn’t obnoxious!!! Or the ever famed ArrOgAnT jErkK that’s so popular these days. He’s confident in himself AND somehow doesn’t feel the need to be in your face about it. This bumped it from 1⭐️ to 2.
👎The thing that bothered me the most about this novel …. is that Violet keeps asking what SHE wants. She never ONCE thinks about him! For example- she says “I” don’t want things to change! “I” don’t know how I feel about this - “I” am scared. “I” am going to run away. She never once says to Sam - “enough about me - how do YOU feel?!” Or stop to think - “hey, if he had this reaction to me maybe HE would like an opinion on this or maybe HE would like things to change?!” She is blindingly selfish and never even has no clue anywhere in the novel. Even the last conflict when she shuts him down yet again he asks if it’s what she really wants and she says yes - it’s like you’re supposed to feel so sorry for this poor girl … but she never takes HIS feelings into consideration. At this point it’s unforgivable to me because she KNOWS how long he’s been pining for her. She makes that callous decision thinking only of herself. Honestly it makes her an ungrateful self centered bitch, and Sam deserves so much better. Sorry not sorry.
👎He enables this pattern of her behavior for their entire relationship bc he ALWAYS gives her what she wants and never thinks of himself. He is just so selfless, but honestly it’s so overboard he becomes a bit of a doormat. He even realizes at some point how he always puts her needs first, but he realizes just how selfish SHE is. Honestly I don’t even think the author realizes what a little monster she created.
👎I couldn’t empathize with the conflict. It’s just awful and so stupid. Thankfully, she DOES take responsibility for it and she DOES realize she is an idiot.
👎 her friends conflict with her boyfriend.. I just can’t empathize there either. She is so shocked her boyfriend of 2 years had the AUDACITY to propose to her…. though they’re madly in love, have been together seriously for two years, and she is planning to move to her city and INTO HIS APARTMENT when she graduates in a few months. Poor guy. He’s good enough for her to live with and date, but not marry..
And THEN SHE HAS THE AUDACITY to say she loves him but “doesn’t want to be a CHILD BRIDE at the age of 22”. 22 (really 23-24 by the time the wedding would be) is a GROWN ASS ADULT. this is what’s wrong with our current times. 23 IS AN ADULT, NOT A CHILD. I was married at 22, so I’m offended by this and think it’s simply ridiculous. And GASP I managed to thrive in my career even AFTER I was married!
If she really loved him and actually wanted to be with him all she had to do was say yes, then ask for a long engagement. Most engagements are a year or 2 anyways!
👎 I also hate violet and how ridiculous she is.
👎 I skimmed the last half of the novel because it also got a bit painful/boring/repetitive.
Yup, loved it! Not surprised at all by that fact either!
Okay NOW we are getting back to traditional Jennifer Sucevic writing. This book was phenomenal and kept my interest from page one. I was so intrigued to discover when Violet would open her eyes and how the reveal would happen! The build up ALMOST too much and got a tiny bit repetitious but was worth it in the end. Sam was not your typical football player…at all. He was studious, modest, wanted no part of the limelight with no social media presence at all! Not saying all ballers are, just more so than ones who aren’t. He wants to practice law and those kinds of classes are nothing to sneeze at! He’s just a big loving warm teddy bear who has spent almost a decade in love with an oblivious Violet. Seeing their interaction made you want to root for them to make it as they truly are THE best of friends. They tell each other everything and are so emotionally tied together that they can sense when the other is down. Even their families are in on it and love the other kid like their own. You’d think it was obvious destiny but nope! Once they finally get together the fireworks pop OFF! The descriptions of the “fun” times is back up to par with her normal books and boy oh BOY was I happy for it? 🔥💦🌶️🌶️🌶️😮💨🥵. An author taking the knowledge that 2 chapters know each other and have known each other for 8yrs definitely gave these scenes a twist that I happened considered. I mean since they know each other so we’ll I guess not a ton of ackward “getting to know you” time spent at the beginning aye? Yeah, good times for sure! Then to add even more to this story, I actually like how we got to know some of the secondary characters in this one way more than we did in book one! I feel in lust with Liam and liked how we got glimpses of Rion and Ivy’s future and a bit more with Dylan and Lexie. Love any tie in I can get when I’ve fallen in love with characters. All in all, Sam and Violet have become my current favorite couple in this series. Their friendship and mutual respect for each other trumps all and makes their love connect even hotter. That’s the kind of security you get with loving your bestie I guess. The feeling came across beautifully and made this book even better!!
Gekünsteltes Drama a la The American Way of Life.
Violet and Sam have been best friends since violets family was killed in a car accident and she moved in with her grandparents. She and sam were 14 and became neighbors. For almost a decade, Sam has been secretly in love with violet but she’s oblivious. In the last month though, violet has started to have feelings for Sam. The whole book centers around her not wanting to ruin their friendship and they each think the other wants to just be friends but really they don’t want to be just friends. So finally they get together and everything is great and one morning violet takes a picture of a naked sleeping Sam. A couple weeks later some asshole gets a hold of violets phone and sees the picture. She sends it to herself and then blasts it all over the Internet. It’s bad because Sam’s dad is a senator up for reelection and he gets pissed. After a couple weeks of silence, violet and Sam get back together and then like a year later they get engaged and HEA.

Fun plot, fun, storyline, fun, premise… But the FMC spoke of nothing but naivety, and as many would say, had red flags out of the Wazzu and not the hot sexy kind… This particular story didn’t show any females in good lights. The main female violated the main male by taking a naked photo of him and giving his phone numbers out to girls. And the FMC‘s best friend said no to her boyfriend‘s proposal and then acted like she was the victim/damsel in distress. Some good lights in this book include the MMC‘s relationship with his friends and with the FMC‘s grandparents. Although I do not understand in this day and age why people don’t have passcodes on their phone nor did it explain why she did not have a car.
This is a childhood friends-to-lovers romance with some good spice and a thoughtful discussion about poctures/privacy. It is set at a fictional college. The main characters are college seniors, both applying to law school. They are thoughtfully fleshed out, and their struggles are related to their larger identities/ family commitments. Male is a star college football player, and they became best friends in 8th grade after her family died in a car accident and she came to live with her grandparents. He fell first, and she is finally noticing the sparks after 8 years of friendship. Enjoyable book, and excited to hopefully find fun side characters as leads in other books!
- little more story than the last one - Victim Violet. - girl you literally took a naked photo of him and you’re crying and all upset??? You’ve been friends since u were 14 don’t you know he doesn’t do pictures…. -Why did he have to fight for the relationship when she messed up??? She should’ve groveled sorry not sorry -hate friends to lovers -hate how the girl never realizes her best friend is in love with her. It’s so obvious. He legit only gets with girls that look like you -roommates storylines are pointless if they don’t have a book. Just like Lexies pregnancy scare in the first book, Mia’s failed proposal didn’t need to be a thing -why didn’t Liam get w mia… like girl who’s gia? -AUTHORS STOP SAYING “Grrrr…” NO ONE SAYS THAT OR THINKS THAT. ITS WEIRD TO READ.
Sam and Violet have a special friendship. When she lost her parents and sister in a car accident, she moved in with her grandparents. Sam’s family lived next door. He’s always been there for her and their bond is special. He’s known she was the one for him since the day he met her, at the age of 14. She just never thought of their friendship being more.
After 8 years, going through high school together and then college, Sam has waited long enough for Violet to see him as more than a friend. I loved their relationship development and storyline. What an enjoyable story this was to read!
I love the friends to lovers trope and I love Jennifer Sucevic so this was an automatic read for me. Sam and Violet have been best friends for 8 years. Violet is just discovering that her feelings are turning into more than friends. She is completely unaware that Sam has ALWAYS felt more. She fights her feelings and Sam for quite a while but eventually gives in. This was a 4 star read for me because I absolutely HATE a third act breakup and this had a second AND third act break up. They weren’t completely unnecessary but still I hated them. I loved Sam and how sweet and protective he was of Violet. Spice level was 🌶️🌶️🌶️ A really good read!
This book had a trope I realized isn’t my favorite but I finished it. I thought about this book all day at work and realized I need to see what happens. I loved violet and Sam’s friendship to relationship. I didn’t mind the slow burn of this book. I didn’t vibe with this one trope. Violet makes a mistake of taking a picture of sam it gets leaked. Sam reacts bad I thought he could have handled the situation a lil better. It gets to the point where violet thinks she is going to loose Sam so she tells him she just wants to go back to being friends. This was such a sad book but the ending was happy for these reasons I’m giving it a 3.5 read

This is one that I DNF'ed. For now, anyway. Not saying it's terrible, I just wasn't in the mood for it. There is a twist that everyone can see coming miles away, and the friends-to-lovers trope is a bit hard to take sometimes when everybody is so hot and so best friends and gets along so well yet totally clueless that hooking up is even a possibility. I mean, if you see them often, and you always have a good time, and you can trust them, and they're totally delectable--- what kind of a slow top do you have to be not to wonder what if...?
Although i seem to be reading all her books out of order having read "If You Were Mine" first the books work fantastically as standalones, and unlike some series with crossing characters i dont find myself not wanting to read the first book in this series because i've started on the second, if anything i'm more anxious than ever to read Roan and Ivy's story.
Looking forward to reading more of Jennifer's books
I had high expectations with this story since I really liked Ronan's. Unfortunately, he could not fulfill them. Violet is a girl too self-absorbed and quite immature. Sam is smart but I didn't like cowardice. Most of the book was spent taking away his attraction and after managing to take the plunge, a big tangle comes that only gets fixed at the end of the book. The chemistry was but so much trouble and denial downplayed it.
This is a good story, the friend zoned trope doesn’t tend to hold my attention because the couples are always half in love already and there’s not much surprise to the story.
This one did have an interesting conflict and pulled me back in when i was beginning to get a little too bored.
Looking forward to the next couples story In This series.
