During 2009, Macmillan Books announced that Lane would be writing a series of books focusing on the early life of Sherlock Holmes. The series was developed in conjunction with the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Lane had already shown an extensive knowledge of the Holmes character and continuity in his Virgin Books novel All-Consuming Fire in which he created The Library of St. John the Beheaded as a meeting place for the worlds of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who.
The first book in the 'Young Sherlock Holmes' series – Death Cloud – was published in the United Kingdom in June 2010 (February 2011 in the United States), with the second – Red Leech – published in the United Kingdom in November of that year (with a United States publication date under the title Rebel Fire of February 2012). The third book – Black Ice – was published in June 2011 in the UK while the fourth book – Fire Storm – was published originally in hardback in October 2011 with a paperback publication in March 2012. The fifth book, Snake Bite was published in hardback in October 2012 and the sixth book, Knife Edge was published in September 2013. Death Cloud was short-listed for both the 2010 North East Book Award. (coming second by three votes) and the 2011 Southampton's Favourite Book Award. Black Ice won the 2012 Centurion Book Award.

Ende der Young Sherlock Holmes Reihe
In dem Buch Daheim lauert der Tod (Young Sherlock Holmes 8) von Andrew Lane, geht es um Sherlock Holmes welcher sich gerade in Oxford aufhält, weil er dort noch immer von Mr. Dogdson an der Universität in Oxford unterrichtet wird. Sein Bruder Mycroft besucht ihn gerade, weil er ihm berichtet das ihre Mutter gestorben ist und möchte Sherlock Holmes mit zur Beerdigung nach Hause mitnehmen. Sherlock, sein Bruder Mycroft und auch Matty fahren gemeinsam zu Sherlock nach Hause zu Holmes Lodge um sich dort um die Angelegenheit der Beerdigung der Mutter zu kümmern. Dort wird das Anwesen mitten in der Nacht von 3 Gestalten überrascht, aber Sherlock und Matty können sie vertreiben. Gleichzeitig wollen Mycroft und Sherlock, den Freund von Sherlocks Schwester kennenlernen. Eigentlich waren sie bei ihm verabredet, aber sie finden ihn in seinem Haus gefesselt vor. Er geht davon aus, es könnte etwas mit dem Brief von seinem Bruder zutun haben. Hat er Recht oder nicht ?
Meine Meinung:
Ich fand die Geschichte spannend geschrieben und flüssig zu lesen/ hören. Natürlich war ich gespannt wie der letzte Band der Young Sherlock Holmes Reihe ausgehen wird, weil es danach nicht weiter geht. Jetzt bin ich etwas beruhigt, weil ds Ebde doch ok ist, aber auch irgendwie sehr offen bleibt. Sonst war die Geschichte sehr spannend und wieder informativ und schön mit Rätseln gespickt.
Fazit:
Ein schöner Abschluss der Young Sherlock Holmes Reihe, aber mit einem offenen Ende, das bis jetzt nicht weitergeführt wurde. Trotzdem zu empfehlen.

again, a good plot, centered around the building of the Suez canal, which the English were thoroughly against - also a sad one since Sherlock discovers that friends and family can betray you, and destroy the confidence you put in them. Politics are a dirty game, and you’re best not be caught in the center of it.
I’m sorry the series ends like this, but it all makes sense to understand the adult Sherlock Holmes in the Conan Doyle books.

Excellent addition to the franchise yet again in this the 8th novel in the series! Although when it states at the back of the book in his 'afterword', that continuing with it is out of his hands, what's that about? Since he is the only one named as the author of them! I mean since it must be chronologically speaking around 20 years age-wise for Sherlock until Arthur Conan Doyle's 1st novel picks up the events in his life from where Andrew has him now, would it make sense to any fan to leave the character in limbo at this point?!?! I don't reckon so!

HÄ WAS ich bin so krass verwirrt von dem ende???? war das wirklich nötig??? NEIN!! ich schwör, ich war an der story eigentlich nur so halb interessiert, aber das ende hat mich fast zum heulen gebracht?? ich bin einfach so verwirrt von dem ganzen & dann war das auch noch der letzte teil wtf! entweder muss ich jz fanfictions lesen mit einem besseren ende oder ein besseres ende selber schreiben, weil dieses ende akzeptiere ich nicht! es ist alles so dramatisch for what 😭😭😭

Full speed ahead as usual. If you're a S.H. fan you'll love it. Nice meeting Mycroft again. I've allways wonderd about Sherlocks family background and familylife.How did he become so special? Andrew Lane tries to answer that question in his books. It ain't half bad really, even if S. seems a little bit to normal and human so far. I mean... The grown man... He's definitely more of a character, wouldn't you agree?

I can’t believe it’s over. I just know that ending was setting up for another book and I just wish we had gotten to see that.
I loved this book! Mycroft keeping secrets from Sherlock which further sets up his strained relationship with the brothers hurt to see play out. Sherlock feeling betrayed by Rufus Stone trying to ensure the canal was destroyed, I also felt betrayed by that especially after seeing how things had been with them for books.
I was pleasantly surprised by Emma’s fiancé, I didn’t expect him to bring a gun with him to Egypt but it really saved his life and Sherlock and Matty’s.
It’s so sad that Sherlock’s mentality towards the end of the book was having friends only hurts but it makes sense for how it gets that way for older Sherlock. It’s also sad that Reilly was just a person who was on that same ship who was there to ensure that Sherlock was prepared especially with how much time they spent together.
I don’t however agree with Sherlock saying Virginia betrayed him, I think it was just she broke his heart that’s all.

Der leider wohl letzte Teil der Young Sherlock Reihe hat mir wirklich gut gefallen. Sherlock ist erwachsen geworden und man merkt immer mehr Züge, die typisch für den älteren Sherlock sind. Es war schön etwas von der Familie zu sehen, auch wenn der Zusammenhalt von kurzer Dauer war.
Sehr Schade, dass die Story an dieser Stelle endet. Trotzdem ein sehr gelungenes Ende, dass auch ein mögliches Comeback offen hält.

I'm feeling a bit stunned at the moment. I've really enjoyed Andrew Lane's Young Sherlock series and recently finished the last of the series that shouldn't be the last. After eight books you would think he had the fans to finish the series as he wanted and planned. He has an Author's postscript in his ninth book, Night Break, that explains how he researched for the novel and had ideas for the next book.
I was really looking forward to the next book!
Lane has long been a Sherlock Holmes fan, but he noticed that no one was writing about a young Sherlock that teens could relate to. His series began in 2011, I believe, and by 2015 Night Break had been published.
Why his next book in the series wasn't picked up is a mystery, but I have a disturbing theory. In the book the British government comes off very badly. Sherlock has discovered a terrible thing.
I'm guessing the series, set in England, was published in England and British fans and/or the publisher cooled considerably towards the series. (But then maybe not. Goodreads gives it high ratings.) Its storyline reveals just why Sherlock stopped getting along with his older brother Mycroft because Mycroft placed his country's imperial interests over his brother's very life.
You've heard of the Suez Canal? It was built by brilliant French engineers to allow ships a much shorter, safer water route to India and elseqhere instead of going around the Cape of Good Hope. It would benefit France, Britain's imperial rival, and the British government didn't like that.
I won't spoil the suspense for you. It's obvious, though, that the brothers have become enemies.
The international spy organization, the Parador Corporation, I think, gets involved with Sherlock, but this time on his side. One of their agents teaches Sherlock to swordfight.
Maybe the detail was more excessive than usual. Maybe it was more personal than the previous books. It's for young adults, after all. I loved it, how we finally meet Sherlock's dingy sister who has a fiancee now and also how devastated he was by his mother's death. Some fans may expect the young Sherlock to be as emotionless as his adult self, but that isn't realistic.
The series helped explain why Sherlock became the great detective he did and I think another book would've been even more helpful, but Lane explained that it wasn't his decision.
It makes me want to try writing the ninth book myself!

The eighth book in the Young Sherlock Holmes series. As with the other stories in this series the period detail is well-researched and convincing, the characters are engaging and the plotting is excellent.
In this story the Holmes brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft, are called back to their family home for the funeral of their mother. They begin to prepare for her funeral and sort through what needs to be done as well as trying to decide how best to support their sister, Emma.
They are all dealing with a sense of loss so when Emma claims that faceless men are visiting the house Sherlock doesn’t believe her. However Sherlock investigates and discovers that three men in bizarre disguises have broken into the house in the middle of the night. When Sherlock finds them he is viscously attacked. The family seems to be caught up in some strange mystery that they have no understanding or knowledge of.
The next occurrence involves men, posing as builders, attacking their sister’s fiancé. Both Mycroft and Sherlock independently deduce that the mystery is somehow connected to the building of the Suez Canal. The paths they then follow turn out to be very different, as Sherlock, with his ever loyal friend Matty, setting out for Egypt, determined to discover just what is going on. He feels betrayed by his brother and follows his own instincts to get to the bottom of what is going on. The nature of loyalties and friendship is called into question before the book is finished.

Από αντικειμενικής άποψης το βιβλίο αυτό ήταν πολύ καλό, όπως και τα προηγούμενα φυσικά. Η πλοκή του συμπεριλαμβάνει το κλασσικό μυστήριο που εμπνέει τον Σέρλοκ αλλά επιπλέον την αίσθηση της προδοσίας και την μοναξιάς που ο δύσμοιρος πρωταγωνιστής.
Θα περιμένω με αγωνία το επόμενο βιβλίο αν τελικά ο συγγραφέας αποφασίσει να το δημιουργήσει. Εν τέλει σας συνιστώ να διαβάσετε την σειρά διότι είναι απλά συγκλονιστική.

Another excellent effort. Lane's writing seems to be improving with every book. Finally some more insight into Sherlock's immediate family and a great background story around the construction of the Suez Canal. Unfortunately I'm up to date with the series now - this one was just released - so I could be waiting a while for the next instalment.

These books are just excellent. I love the drama, the mystery, the action and the characters just jump off the page. I love the young Sherlock and have immensely enjoyed reading about how his deduction techniques have developed and how he thinks so logically about his surroundings. I think this was one of the best of the series!

this book is the final in the series. having nearly finished it, i can confidently say that it is one of the the more thrilling of the series, and definately worth reading

Sherlock Holmes returns in the final book in the Young Sherlock series, and he's ready to solve one last mystery. After the death of his mother, Sherlock returns home but quickly realizes that there's a plot to destroy the Suez Canal before it can open. With his best friend Matty by his side, Sherlock travels to Egypt to foil the sabotage before it is too late.
I'm glad that I can finally say that I have finished this series, but the books are not as good as I remember them. I can see why I enjoyed them in high school, but I found the mystery to be flat and the pacing to be off. NIGHT BREAK isn't even 300 pages, and I think that adding another 50-75 pages would have strengthened the plot and prevented Lane from rushing his ending. There were only 15-20 pages left when the mystery was wrapping up, and I was left wanting more.
I also felt like the prologue gave away the ending. With Rufus' betrayal in the back of my mind, I didn't trust him throughout the story and analyzed his actions to see how his betrayal would play out later. The way that it is now, I don't see any reason why it was revealed at the beginning of the book.
Finally, the editing could have been tightened significantly. Not only could the book have been lengthened like I mentioned before, but there were some common knowledge things that Sherlock should have known but somehow didn't. While there were great deductions in the book, Sherlock didn't seem as true to the original character as he did in the previous books.
However, I did like that activities that Sherlock enjoys as an adult are introduced throughout the whole series, and NIGHT BREAK incorporated fencing. It did seem slightly convenient that he learned it just in time for the ending of the book, but I was willing to forgive that because I enjoyed seeing him learn how to fight and he wasn't perfect at it.
Overall, the Young Sherlock series is great for anyone who loves mystery, historical fiction, and the iconic character. While this wasn't my favorite installment in the series, I did like to see Sherlock's interactions with the other characters and watching him become the classic character I love so much.

The final book in the Young Sherlock Holmes series. Even though it certainly didn't feel like it.
I enjoyed reading the book, it was a great book with an interesting mystery, which Sherlock of course had to solve. I also liked the setting, which was, at least for a part, in Egypt.
However, I also got a few things that I didn't like. I am not sure if it was the case for other books too, but sometimes chapters ended with what will happen next (in terms of: this was 30 minutes before the attack.). I don't know if things like this were used in the previous books as well, but it at least didn't bother me before. But this time it very much did. I also didn't quite like how the book more or less started with the end. I get that it was supposed to make the reader wonder how a situation like this could occur, but it didn't for me, as I coul already guess after 70 pages or so.
Also, the ending. If it can be called an ending. Usually I like open books. At least if there is a possibility of another book, but as far as I know this definetely is the last one. And for the end of a series, that used to wrap things up, I'm deeply unsatisfied with the ending.
I'm actually quite surprised to give it 4 stars considering there is so much bothering me, but I think they are more sentimental than an actual rating. I suppose that would be closer to 2.5 stars, but my heart, which is attached to this series, just can't do that.

I also didn't quite like how the book more or less started with the end. I get that it was supposed to make the reader wonder how a situation like this could occur, but it didn't for me, as I coul already guess after 70 pages or so.
Also, the ending. If it can be called an ending. Usually I like open books. At least if there is a possibility of another book, but as far as I know this definetely is the last one. And for the end of a series, that used to wrap things up, I'm deeply unsatisfied with the ending.
I'm actually quite surprised to give it 4 stars considering there is so much bothering me, but I think they are more sentimental than an actual rating. I suppose that would be closer to 2.5 stars, but my heart, which is attached to this series, just can't do that.

Wow. This took me sooo long to finish.
I feel so bad for only giving this book 2 stars. I've met Andrew Lane in real life, and he is seriously such a nice guy. And this book wasn't even that bad either... it just wasn't good.
Maybe it's because I'm not a huge Sherlock fan.
So, here's a few things about this book:
1. It's longwinded. Very longwinded. There are while paragraphs dedicated to describing pieces of furniture. This is the initial reason I really wasn't into this book - it just takes a very long time getting anywhere.
2. The working out was not as exciting as I'd hoped. Basically, Sherlock wandered around looking at stuff and making very detailed observations. It wasn't very reader-interactive in that way.
But it wasn't horrendous.
If you're into Sherlock, I'm sure you'd probably really enjoy it. Please don't let me put you off. It's just, this novel is not for me.

I CAN NOT ACCEPT THAT THIS IS THE LAST BOOK

I think this book was a bit weak. I liked it, but the Plot was kind of boring and i just didn't like the beginning and the ending LMAO Everything was so random and you got the feeling that Lane 1. wanted to try something new, 2. wanted to make a last BIG story, but also 3. wrote the whole book as if there was a next one yet to come. But no. I will sit here now. In pain. Boiling my noodles without Sherlock and Matty. Big Sadge.
But to be a bit more serious, I really enjoyed the series. I just looove the whole sherlock holmes era. This were a nice 4 months with the series. It helped me a lot after moving.

The series ends very abruptly.
The author hasn't yet completed the series. There are still a bit of explanations to do about Sherlock, which he points out in the last pages of the book.
The plots from the last 3 books in the series were more interesting and Doyle like.
Am disappointed that the author stoping the series, when the plots were getting more intresting.
Hope he publishes another book in the series.

This was a great story! The ending was a bit too rushed but it still was a very good book.
The author's note at the end of the book said that there could very well be more coming; hinting that Sherlock was headed to India to find his father. But this book was written in 2015 and there
is no indication that another one is on the way. The author seems to be still writing books; his most recent was published in 2021, so there is still hope that # 9 in this series will appear.

I've really enjoyed this series and hope there is a ninth book, although I can't find any information about that. Even the author seemed dubious about a ninth book. If this is the end of the series, it was a lovely ride, despite loose ends that would have undoubtedly been addressed in future books.

Slow beginning with a hard end. Sadly the German cover and title are very irritating. This happens nowhere near Gizeh and only about 100 pages in Egypt. The first 150 pages are in England at home where a death happened and another 100 pages on a ship. Liked the story though, although it was very heavy on sword training. James Philimore sometimes seemed to be a bit out of character.
