What if you could control what people believed... The Ministry has always been part of our world, operating in the moral grey area of radical thought and revolutionary technology. It works to prevent intellectual contagion in an era where a dangerous thought can spread across the globe faster than a pandemic, and more virulently. Jacob Trials is one of their star agents, a man who has carried out actions both heroic and villainous, both necessary and brutal. He has given over his very body to the cause, with machinery that he barely understands adapting and enhancing him. When an unknown group starts hunting him with a viciousness he can hardly countenance, Trials will be forced to come to terms with loss, betrayal, and a savagery that will change him, and his world, forever. A heady mix of nanotech, spy games, violence, memes, and religion.
I was concerned when I first started to read this novel. The Prologue opened with a run-on sentence and there were many uses of "as", but a few chapters in the errors seemed to smooth out. I did get lost with the story's timeline moving backward and then forward depending on the chapter. The reader does need to pay attention to those chapter headings to know what is going on.
It was a good action-packed story. Plenty of twists and turns. It is obvious that the author put a lot of thought into the plot and needed to map out all of the little threads that he had going on. Given the story's subject matter, I expected the violence, but I'm not a big fan of profanity and there was a fair amount in this book. It didn't stop me from enjoying the story. I can apply a filter and ignore it.
The novel is an easy read. Finished this one in two days.
I hope that this is the first in a series. The story races along at a frenetic pace and I like the combination of science and spy thriller. The plot itself is gloriously over-the-top and times unbelievable, but I loved it. One of the reasons I read is to escape to another world and this book definitely allowed me to do that. The non-stop action and frequent plot twists remind me of authors like Andy McDermott and Chris Kuzneski, who I enjoy and I will definitely be reading the next book in this series.
Now I'm feeling bas for all the books I've given 5 stars because this one is much better than some of them! I like how the author describes everything what’s happening now and then he tells us the story behind it which happened many years ago. The characters are well developed but not predictable. The book is easy to read and I really hope there will be a sequel!
Nail biting suspense with unexpected twists. The characters with their greed for control, power, revenge, insanity are all found in this action packed science fiction thriller. A recommended read
No deficit of action or suspense in this fast-paced read! A shadowy government department, heart-pounding action, far from silent and subtle assassination squads, and incredible nanotechnology, this story pretty much has it all. It also has some wonderfully complex characters, is rife with a wry humour and has some twists that had me on the edge of my seat. Really well written, it's a suspenseful thriller of a ride and a totally compelling read. One hopes this is the first in a long series. Now for the hard part, waiting patiently (not my foremost trait!) for the sequel(s). Highly recommended.

In the interest of transparency I have to say the author is a relative genius (OK, he's a relative - my son - but duh...) it's a marvellous book, thoroughly enjoyable, well written and races along a mile a minute just like a good thriller should and with a terrific plot and unforgettable cast - but don't just take my word for it - read it and then you'll agree with my honest, unbiased review. Nikki.
