The pupils of Rock City, NC wander the streets aimlessly, misguided, only to follow the bloody footsteps of those who have come before them. They are blinded by the limelight of a fast life and easy money. Freck, Keira, and Pat are on three different routes to a common grave. Neither of them needed the street life, but curiosity and peer pressure of hood recruiters are quite persuasive. Once they become wrapped up in the life that they so desperately chased, they find themselves alone, betrayed, and lost in the limbo of life and death. They were warned to avoid fate’s detour on the fast lane, but these signs aren’t something that a distracted mind can see…they must be felt…

Book Review of Braille by Niles Manning!

Now I have read both of Grainger Files which were absolutely excellent by this author so I knew I was going to be in for a good read! What I did not expect was to be so emotionally involved to the point where were I had to remember, this is just a story!!! The author started this book with an OMG and ended it the same way! He actually had my allergies acting up! The messages where so loud, deep and the clear, but lost on those who could neither hear, see or feel them for they were blinded by their own lust for money at the cost of losing it all! They took gambles that they felt they were winning while failing to see that each day they were losing more and more of themselves, becoming shells of what they used to be! What price are you willing to pay for your soul? Any price is too high, but not when that hunger and thirst has been awakened and the only way to quench and satisfy it is to go in deeper with the next caper! With each caper came the loss of more innocence until the only thing left were hardened shells fighting for survival!

The main characters were two groups of young friends: Freck the handsome green eyed kid being raised by his aunt and uncle; Chris the kid whose mother was fighting for his sanity and survival; , Lil Luck, damn wanna be trouble maker who put everyone's safety in jeopardy by constantly pretending to be something he was not; June who was always looking for a scheme and the come up; Tasha the friend who always had June's back in any caper, who was always in June's shadow; and Kiera the youngest and innocent one of the bunch who lived a good life with both parents, drawn into the street life by her cousin Tasha and what she thought was excitement. Each of these kids made decisions that would negatively impact their future, especially when they found out that all that glittered was not gold. That old saying "a hard head makes a soft behind", is not lost here! The signs were all around them to the point where warnings were appearing in dreams, in their consciousness, from their families, friends and they still couldn't see them or hear them for what they were because they were too blinded by selfishness and ignorance to see and hear the truth. They got a taste of that hunger and had to continue to feed it! It would appear that the mistakes made by loved ones and friends would be the catalyst that would cause these kids to refrain from following the same paths, but this was not the case! They all made decisions to build up their street credibility by doing business and hanging in environments where drugs, money, power and mischief was prevalent. The mistake was believing they could constantly be in this type of environment and not be tempted to partake in it! Their naiveness did not prepare them for the constant pressure to get their hands dirty, in the process crossing lines that once were crossed could never be uncrossed because there was no going back! All of them made individual choices that had dire consequences that pulled them further and further into the abyss of a lifestyle that no longer had that glamorous appeal because now everything was about plain old survival! Freck, Kiera and Chris were all from good homes, but that strong infatuation with money and the streets over powered any sensibilities or initial plans they had for their future! Their lack of knowledge made them lambs for the slaughter as they faced the consequences of the streets and her corruption! They failed to realize that the streets have no loyalty and neither do the people in it! These kids became victims of the streets once they embraced her azz and she would not let them go! She dangled ill gotten gains and promises of a better life to suck them in and once she got them she put them in a chokehold stealing and taking everything that was once innocent! Once they were in, everything became a blur as loyalties and bonds were destroyed as self preservation became the priority at any cost!

The messages in this book is one that every young person should be encouraged to read because it is just that powerful. It is the truth! Life is all about choices! As I stated the streets has love for no one and when we think we can beat her at her own game we will fail each time as she swallows us whole. How many times have we heard that little voice saying don't do it and we did it anyway? How many times have we seen the truth and we ignore it because we think we have the power to undue what's been done? How many times have folks that care issued warnings but we think we have this and are in control only to realize we are in over our heads? How many times have we told ourselves, this will be the last time only to have situations blow up in our face because it wasn't the last time and we should have stopped while we were ahead? How many times have we all failed at adhering to any of these things? All lessons that fall on deaf ears and blinded eyes when we make that choice to ignore them! This book was written for the many who are thinking about some of the choices they made that changed their lives forever. If only there were do overs! Well there aren't any do overs, so the choices you make today have to be ones you won't regret tomorrow! Open your eyes to the truth! Absorb it, Digest it and learn from it!

Niles Manning really put a lot of emotions in this book, because while I said I wanted to beat him up, I really wanted to cry at the way the story unfolded for some of these characters! This is the life of many! Some will rise, while others will fall but none of it is without consequences! Great job Niles on writing such a powerful story!

If you have not been introduced to any of this author's work, please take the time and introduce yourself. My two absolute favorites are Convince me to Live and the Scars of Salem (both from the Grainger Files).

Niles never seems to disappoint his readers. His writing has grown tremendously since the beginning. This is Frecks story, one character I have grown to love. Niles delivered his story in a way that you really had to read or you would miss things. Can't wait to read the next book by the author.

I took my time with this. You can't rush greatness and I couldn't rush and read his greatness. This story explains so much on why and how characters in his previous works (Price of Heir series, go get it if you haven't read it already). Are the way they are and how evolved. I love the wordplay in his work. This has the best wordplay since Four in the Moment(another hit). I live for his ping pong scenes and he gave me one good one! He opened with a bang and definitely ended with a bang. The message in this story spoke volumes. I'm so proud of you Author Niles Manning! You did it! You chased illmatic. Now, all I need to see at the bottom of your covers is New York's best selling author. You're on your way to the top! Great job!

This book was very different from previous books by this author! There was a few giggles here and there but also a very valuable lesson to be learned from this book as well. We all have choices. Sometimes the vessel in which we are receiving our blessings are not what we expected. Sometimes they are not what we want to hear. But we tend to block our own blessings by only looking at the surface. This book was very enjoyable. Niles Manning is a very talented author and I can't wait to read his next book

Extraordinary, exceptional, just outright great

I can hardly do justice in writing a review for this book. I can say it was absolutely awesome. This story captured me from the beginning and held me captive to the very end. Loved looking into the live of all these characters. Had me rooting for some praying for others. Five stars.

This book explains SO MUCH!! Why certain characters are the way they are. Where they began... How they started down the roads they are or were on... One of Manning's best books yet.
