At some point, right before my memory clicked off, the nightmare fairy must have paid the world a visit. Everything is dead and abandoned. It's just... gone. I don't remember how the world got this way, but my husband and I were lucky to find the deserted theme park when we did. I thought we were the only survivors, but a new man has come. Shannon. He scares me. He seems weirdly possessive of me. He's going to take me out of the park, away from my husband and the only safety I have. I'm terrified to know what's out there.

3.5* blank slate STARS!!

This is (maybe) the least dark story from Kitty Thomas. She was known for unconventional romance, BDSM Master/slave relationship and forced submission. I've been Kitty's fans since Tender Mercies, Big Sky and Comfort Food. Her books isn't easy to process and definitely not for everyone.

Elodie is the only thing she remember. Suffered from amnesia and believe the end of the world, she lives with other survivor for months. But something doesn't feel right until a new man appear and take her away. Elodie's condition was so fucked up because she couldn't remember anything and has been blindsided and now taken by a man who could be a killer.

The story was told from Elodie's POV. Half of the book is trying to convince me that Shannon is just being a good Samaritan who wants nothing in return. It seems Shannon has dark secrets that already predictable. Elodie feels something towards Shannon despite her mistrust. Shannon admit he turns on from fear and when the time is right, he shown his demon. Surprisingly, Elodie enjoyed it and I did. Shannon was really cold and intense and seems detached but slowly he changed.

Elodie isn't strong woman and she feels skeptical after Shannon told everything about him. Still, he keeps and claimed her. Elodie feels conflicted between stay or run. Either way, Shannon promised to find her. He's very different from Kitty's creation. The man usually confident, cocky and super perv but Shannon is different. He enjoy kinks but nothing surprised me. Shannon is a softie than other anti-heroes.

I'm getting confused when Elodie's memory start to jump back. She was no pure innocent girl but her background story made me cringe. Sordid. When Shannon made everything simple, Elodie was troublesome with her uncertainty. She was afraid doing something bad and feel like a shit about it. Shannon is very complement towards Elodie and he started to has feelings for her which isn't normal for him either.

description

In the end, they started a new journey with their oddity. Overall, their chemistry feels so distant yet completed each other. I rounded up 4 stars to think this is less bizarre than other Kitty's usual work. The story was predictable with no surprising element. Very engaging story, after all. But I missed Kitty's old style of peculiar kink. Tee hee.

“In a fairy tale, this would be the part where magic and light would swirl around him and he’d get up, revived by the true love and magic that somehow inexplicably existed in my tears. And we’d live happily ever after as the castle sprang to life again. All the kudzu would recede, the graffiti would vanish, and life as I was sure I’d once known it would come rushing back in beautiful full bloom.
But this was a fake fairy tale castle, and my tears weren’t magic.”
- Elodie Rosen

——

“When I looked in the mirror, I felt like even more of a stranger to myself, as if a new wave of amnesia would come along and drag me under its empty dark water, erasing everything.”
- Elodie Rosen

——

“You broke my rules. I’ve been very good to you. I’ve protected you and kept you safe. Except for the night we met, I’ve kept all the darker business of my life away from you, including this. You are the one who opened the box, my little Pandora. Now we can’t close it. All the evil inside can never go back in. It’s in the air now. Can you smell it?”
- Shannon

——

“Until very recently, the only person in the world I cared even a little bit about was myself. I can fake empathy pretty well under the right circumstances. Most people don’t notice because most of their empathy is just as fake. Everybody’s wrapped up in their own shit, so maybe we’re all just pretending, and it’s not just me.”

“Shannon and I seemed like two sides of the same coin. He was the perfect predator; I was the perfect prey.”

DNF at 50%. I picked this one because of the interesting cover and the post-Apocalyptic story described in the blurb. I should have read some reviews (which I tend not to do beforehand for fear of spoilers) and I would have realized that this wasn't for me. I don't mind dirty books, but I like my smut to be in a science fiction or fantasy flavor. And this story wasn't that at all. It turns out that Elodie, who has amnesia--the titular tabula rasa--wakes up in an abandoned theme park with a man who tells her that she's his wife and they are survivors of solar flares and a complete meltdown of society, holed up for the time being in the park for their own safety. Well, he lied. He's really a kidnapper who is keeping her out of the way while the world progresses just like always. Then another dude, who turns out to be an assassin who is into BDSM, comes along, kills the "husband," and snatches Elodie for himself. He keeps her locked up in his nice house unmolested until the fateful night when he says she has to stay in her room because he's having a party and she's not invited. Of course she gets bored and checks it out and it's some kind of bondage orgy, at which point he's like, "Well, I warned you. Now you're mine!" And she's like, "No! Wait, yes, I want you! No, I'm scared, don't! Oh but yes, I want this!" Etc. Then he takes her to meet his parents. At this point I realized I was bored silly and besides, Elodie is completely useless. I'm calling this fifty shades of nope.

Ummmm....no! This was not what I was expecting....not at all! This story took a whole turn in a direction which I may normally like, it just wasn't want I wanted out of it. I expected post-apocalyptic......no didn't really get that. And basically by the end, I felt completely depleted and emotionless....was that what the author was going for?? I doubt it, but the characters were emotionless and ugh.....so frustrating! I kept hoping for that "moment", the big "surprise", and kept reading it for that reason, but it never came.

The favorite thing about this book for me was the white cat "with no name". It was a sassy cat with character and the only thing I had feelings for by the end of the book.

I really wanted to like this book, but it's just not for me, unfortunately. The begging was interesting i liked the suspense, made me very curious to find out what's happened with Elodie's life in the past. Soon after that everything became so predictable and lime that i start skipping pages, pages field with unnecessary explanations that made me bored. I'm not saying that this book not worth reading, not at all its just not my cup of tea. "Tabula Ras" a was first book that i read by this author, but definitely would not be last, i want to give it a try with some other book, maybe i will enjoy it more...

To say I was excited to see Kitty Thomas had a new book coming out would be a understatement. I couldn't wait to see what kind of mind game she was going to give us this time around. Judging by the lovely green cover and the title that had me scratching my head on how to pronounce I figured it was going to be a wild one.

Elodie what a trippy situation she found herself in. Waking up in a strange world not knowing who she, no past memory whatsoever! And to face a man who said she was her husband - I can only begin to imagine the confusion she was experiencing. Her husband, Trevor, how to you handle someone you love but doesn't remember. Do you love the person they are now or do you live in the memory of what they once were. Shannon...where did you come from? Why do you feel possessive? are you a secret Trevor is hiding? Are you part of Shannon's past..the one she doesn't remember?

You know when your at a funeral and everybody is very somber and you have that uncontrollable urge to laugh? Yeah, I had quite a few of those moments while reading Tabula Rasa. Not sure if they were intended or I'm just disturbed that way but yeah, I found humor in Elodie's very unfortunate world. Everything twists and turns for Elodie. No memory, who is she to believe? I tried picturing myself in her shoes and I find for the most part I would have done exactly what she did. I say mostly. Remember this is Kitty Thomas we are talking about here. Expect everything to get tipped on its axis here because that is what happens to Elodie. Does she stay with Trevor or does Shannon take her away? Careful when you open Pandora's box because what lays beyond the walls of the deserted theme park will blow you away.

On a personal note: Tabula Rasa. What kind of title is that? Really, I have been racking my brain trying to figure out what it was about much less how to pronounce it. So, for S&G I looked it up. Oh. I get it now. I'll leave you with the definition.

ta·bu·la ra·sa  noun - 1 : the mind in its hypothetical primary blank or empty state before receiving outside impressions. 2 : something existing in its original pristine state

“For a moment it felt as though the two of us were two pieces that came together to form one whole, that nothing made sense without both of us together as one unit.”

Wow I'm still freaking out after reading this book. And like any other Kitty Thomas book, I'm always in high alert in expecting the worst case scenario but it still surprise me and it still gave me a shock attack witnessing the story unfold.
Damn it, if only I didn't know how meticulous the author's male characters are I wouldn’t be judging Shannon about his character, I feel sorry for being prejudice towards him. Imagine that!
What I love about this author's characters is that they have their agency and you don't have to wobbify their characters. Its take it or complain about it, but they are not black and white, but surely you cannot ignore the blood in their ledger and yet in some sick sense they are amazingly articulate for being so cunning individual. You want to applaud. :P

One thing that gets me when reading this author's books is that it make me concern of the well being of the guy instead of the heroine, like everyone of them that I read beginning with M in Comfort Food. It seems those loose end will somehow get them riled up so you gonna protect them against their sins haha:D

It wasn't 300pages:l but its okay, it has still a complete story:)

It doesn't have much smut in it mind you, its more on fucking your head kind of thrill. If you want smut galore try Con Artist by the same author. ;)

I shouldn't be reading books like this because my anxiety fuck my head but I'm a masochist I think, smh:)

This was only barely okay. I'm getting sad, because I so got into her early work, but the last few novels have made me take her off my auto buy list. Maybe I'm getting more jaded as a reader, but there's nothing really twisty or shocking or even super dark about this, and nothing overly sexy even. What is there is one of the hugest suspensions of disbelief I've personally struggled with and actually kept reading, and that a couple of times in the story. I think I was hoping for something to twist and shock, surprise or engage me, but, meh. And meh is so not what I'm looking for in psychological, dark romance or erotica.

I have no idea why I didn't read this sooner. I adore Kitty Thomas, I've read every book she's written, multiple times. For some reason, this has been sitting in my Kindle for a few years.

It was incredible, full of the usual mind fuckery that Kitty brings to a book.

You always start a Kitty Thomas book with a sense of trepidation, what will happen to make you squirm, flinch and gasp? You need to know, you can't stay away, and that follows you through the whole of the book. Sometimes, the last line is the moment you go, wow, never saw that coming! This is why I love her books, they have that edge, and this is no different

First off, love the name, loved the Buffy episode of the same name, and this was just as much of a ride as it was. The book blurb, well that is the first third of the book, so buckle up! Elodie was amazing, she was real and fractured but still self aware, I loved that about her

I absolutely adored her relationship with the white cat, so simple, so perfect and so needed in the story. It added moments, gave clarity to severe situations or released that nervous laugh that you shouldn't have but needed to get out

This has the twists and turns expected, not that you expect what happens, but you expect it to not be what you would expect if reading another authour. I was so hyped up at the end, I couldn't figure out how it would go, and then it was simple when the story stopped, I was in awe

Not a typical romance story, but a much more interesting one, and I lapped it up!

Elodie

Kitty Thomas has done it again absolutely brilliant, I have a soft spot for sociopath's so this book ticked all the boxes for me , I also did not see the twist coming , so took me completely by surprise which is always a sign of a well written book, great characters, Trevor, Elodie and Shannon, that's all I'm going to say about them as I don't do spoilers and like to let other readers discover for themselves, this was a five star read for me and my favourite so far of Kitty's books give this a go you will not be disappointed.

As a huge Kitty fan....I'm pretty upset about this book. I thought it was good at first..but it never peaked and nothing ever developed from the characters. It lacked passion and darkness... There was that one turning point and paragraph where I thought.."Ah! Here's the Kitty Thomas I know and love so much"..but nope...it went back to being flat. Oh well..

2.5* the story didn't match the blurb...I wanted to read the story the blurb was about. At most, the story had similar elements. No connection to the characters, lots of telling the events rather than letting the reader experience what the characters did. Lots of time skipping, weeks would pass with just a brief description of what had occurred during the time. Disappointed.

Okay y'all. This book...absolute trash. But not in a fun way. Not in a guilty-pleasure-beachy-read way. To be fair, it only cost $2.99 and I took my chances. I wouldn't take these odds to Vegas.

So, let me break it down...spoilers! (Go ahead, you know you want to read them).

This woman wakes up in a spooky abandoned amusement park with amnesia. Her husband tells her the apocalypse has happened caused by none other than ginormous solar flares. Then one day a weird dude shows up and saves her and she realizes the apocalypse story was all a ruse. He takes her to his house because she doesn't want to "face the media" and they live this awkward roommate life. BUT THEN, she finds out he a) is a hit man, b) has kinky sex parties in his kinky sex party basement and c) he's super ripped and cute. Commence some goofy S&M stuff which is fine and whatever.

Meanwhile, she's slowly getting her memory back and learns a) she's super rich due to her mystery celeb-dad, b) she was into kinky stuff before the "apocalypse", c) she was learning to be a botanist, and d) her professor in college was a real jerk. So she decides she wants her hitman boyf to kill the professor and she wants in on the revenge but when it's all said and done, she has BIG REGERTS. A trip to Paris helps her feel better. THE END.

There's a whole lot of overthinking and whingeing, and it's so dumb. Just...so dumb.

When you wake up with amnesia in an abandoned park with a true sociopath! This is what happened to Elodie. I won’t tell more has I do not want to spoil the story but true to her writting Kitty Thomas captured me in her story which I couldn’t put down until the end.

“This was a fake fairy tale…and my tears weren’t magic.”

Imagine waking up in a strange location with no memories…no memories of your past, how you got there, or even your name. Where the only truth is what is told to you, and to be faced with decisions to either believe that person or to believe your instincts. I’m not going to do a summary of this story because it would lead to major spoilers!! I’ll just say that Kitty Thomas has a way of world building in her stories that draws you in, and you, the reader, believe the truths she is weaving.

I loved this story so much that I immediately started reading it again. I do believe I’ve found a tale I love more than her COMFORT FOOD. This dark journey had so many twists and turns it kept my heart racing. I can’t recommend this, as well as her other stories enough!

Kitty is the Queen that will make you crave the Darkness.

Fav quotes:

“You are the one who opened the box, my little Pandora. Now we can’t close it.”

“What are you going to do with me?” “Everything.”

“You’re going to play all my games, Elodie. And you’re going to love every minute of it. I’m tired of you being a toy I can’t play with. I’m ready to take you out of the box.”

“I might never get my memory back. I might always live in this gaping void, this endless eternal twilight, this space where lost souls wandered and moaned in hallways in the dead of night. He seemed to consider the point we’d reached for a moment, as if he could rewind the night.”

“For a moment it felt as though the two of us were two pieces that came together to form one whole, that nothing made sense without both of us together as one unit.”

I thought this book was f#cking brilliant!! One of the more bizarre reads I've enjoyed in a while, once I started, I could not put it down, and weeks later, I'm still thinking about it.

While there were not many times when I felt that I could relate to Elodie, the heroine (and it's not really necessary for me to relate to a protagonist in order for me to enjoy a book), I did very much come to appreciate her reactions to the wildly unique situations that she found herself in, and I absolutely adored her idiosyncrasies--such as her habit of hoarding feminine hygiene products! I think I first fell in love with her character when she raided the tampon vending machine in the abandoned amusement park ladies room. I mean … who among us wouldn't in an apocalypse situation?

I found Shannon’s character to be very intriguing as well. I particularly appreciated his relationship with his unnamed cat and the love triangle of sorts between the three of them.
But what really tipped the scales for me was Elodie’s character arc at the 94% point. That was really a bit of fist-pump genius, in my opinion, how the author just dropped that little knee-jerk character reaction /moment-of-truth on us out of nowhere.

But then… was it really out of nowhere given Elodie’s reactions and choices up to that point?

I loved the premise and creativity of this book, but most especially it’s outrageous, peculiar main and supporting characters and the whole concept of trying to get to know a character who doesn’t even know herself. In summary, this was some F’d up, twisted brilliance, and I loved every moment of it!! :D

A Certain Genius in more than one "Blank Slate"

This is a brilliant story told with exceptional style and pacing. While fascinated with the male protagonist, I was challenged by his sociopathic character. I see where the author could ascribe the meaning of the title from presenting the female protagonist with complete amnesia waking up in a apocalyptic scenario. Reading deeper, I also see that Shannon's emotional blank slate is beginning to be written on for the first time by another human being with his experience of Elodie. The story left me with many ponderings. How far does the redemptive power of love go? Sociopathy aside, do we all feel love the same way? Does sexual desire turn us all into somewhat of a sociopath? Like a great book always does, this book left me with thoughts of the story and its many interpretations. As a bonus, the writer is talented in writing erotic love? scenes as well.

Elodie wakes up in a broken, rusted ride at an abandoned amusement park and doesn't remember a thing before she opened her eye. Trevor, the man who says he's her husband, finds her and tells her that the world has ended and they've found shelter in the castle of this old amusement park. When they get back to the castle and get it all shut up for the night, Trevor is angry that Elodie doesn't remember him and is afraid of him. After a few months, things seem to get better. At least until the night Shannon shows up.

Shannon is an urban explorer who walks into the castle, thinking he's just wondering into an empty building in an abandoned amusement park, only to find Elodie and Trevor. He ends up shooting Trevor and killing him. When Elodie begs him to help her, he hides the murder, a little too well, and takes her with him. It turns out that Trevor wasn't Elodie's husband. He was her stalker and he kidnapped her.

Elodie and Shannon end up having an interesting relationship, while she tries to come to grips with what happens. There is an HEA, in very typical Kitty Thomas fashion. Her HEAs aren't the typical ones, but they fit within the story and the characters. Kitty Thomas loves to play with your mind, and this book is no different.

Tabula Rasa by Kitty Thomas is an amazing psychological story with one of the best plots I have recently read. It has many twists and turns that I absolutely didn't see coming and couldn't imagine. This book is dark, brilliant, and bizarre! It is a new and unique direction for Kitty Thomas' writing. The character development and growth is amazing. Elodie and Shannon are exact opposites that are successfully melded together as a couple dependent on each other.

Tabula Rasa is a new high point for Kitty Thomas. I highly recommend it!

I enjoy the creativity of Kitty Thomas. I feel that something was missing though. The forming of the bond between Elodie and Shannon for example. It was the same with 'Big Sky'. I wasn't there yet. It's too short of a story.
