I was born with a pen in my hand. Which led to nasty questions by the CPS as to how that pen got in there, me fleeing and becoming the traveling toddler. I related better to books than to people, so I studied Psychology to get a better grasp of humanity. After that I volunteered in the US, Romania and The Philippines, until I found out that there were people actually willing to pay for my work. So I did the mortgage–commute-IKEA-thing, until the day that my clogs broke. And now I serve the world by traveling, writing about it and making people smile, for that is what I do best.
For someone who has been to no less than 10 normal and themed Utrecht city tours and read the mystery section of the Dutch local newspaper, I didn't expect to get any aha! moments. But cool that this book has succinctly done it.
After reading 10 pages, I thought of a 3/5 given that editting is needed for a smoother flow. But as more and more unexpected new information was cashed in, my review got to a 4, and then5 now.
Charming little guide full of anecdotes and information, with maps of the town. Love the bit about the Dutch pope moving to Rome in spite of the "raging plaque" (sic). Perhaps the book could have done with a few small scale maps and more pictures of the attractions...
As a 2-years Utrecht dweller now it was by far one of the most informative readings about the city, which makes me really happy. I do agree with another comment that it could use the maps better and add some images of the attractions, but with Goggle Street View things are easier to check now. It also became a bit too much of a generic travel guide on the last quarter of the book, but still worth the price! PS: Overvecht is definitely not as bad as every Dutch puts
