All Nate Devlin wants is a ranch to call home. A quiet spot to settle down. He's found the perfect place on the edge of Eastern Oregon's high desert. At the base of the rolling Ochoco Mountains there's a canyon with a steady spring called the Clearwater. Clearwater offers rich grazing for Nate's herd and room to grow. But perfection comes at a cost. Nate isn't the only one who has plans for the Clearwater. Rhett Baron and his crew of gunhands will stop at nothing to take the spring. Nate may have gotten to the water first, but can he keep it? In the tradition of Louis L'Amour and Zane Grey comes Devlin's Ride by Carson McCloud.
I wish that I could give it more stars. I enjoyed reading but four stars is generous for a story that has obvious twists that I (and anyone else) could figure out, give-me-a-break-he-didn't figure-it-out-sooner moments, and cliches. Sounds like I didn't like it? Not true. The story was fun and reminded me of old Western movies from the 30's and 40's. It also had more profanity than I care for, which is not like the old Westerns. I liked it because it was written well (with some typos here and there, though), had a flavor of the old West, exciting action, and a good main character that I liked, although his aim is a little too good to be true -- but it was still fun. Don't expect a Max Brand and Zane Grey and you'll enjoy it all the more.
A CMC. Western Adventure/Wagon Train Across America/Oregon
CMC. has. penned a western novel about a family moving west. The father is killed by Indians and the Mother died of heartbreak. The son is raised by his Mothers family. When he turns 18 he leAves their home and works on a ranch. Then leaves to start his own place. Then begins the adventure of a lifetime. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
A classic western in the best sense of the of the name. At times I thought it could only be written by The Master himself using one of his pen names like Jim Mayo. But it's a story that's all Carson McCloud with devious twists and turns to bushwack you when you think you've figured out what's next. Yes Mr. McCloud you write with the spirit of Louis L'Amour. I'm hungry to read the rest of your books.
I missed a lot of the story because so many pages are missing. Over 25 pages missing. This book should not ever been put out to read. Is book 2 missing pages also?
Well written, entertaining, good character depiction, now I on to the next one. I have traveled the US camping as I go. Reading about the land gives the storyline theme a better feeling for the storyline.
Good interpretation of the classic western plot. Very Louie LaMore. Small rancher vs big crooked rancher. One of these days it would be interesting to turn that around and have the big rancher be the good guy.
There is always someone trying to take what you have. Jealously or envy, it's all the same and we still have to fight to keep it. Highly recommended for all adult and teenage readers.
This book is the beginning of a new journey, as I continue on following Mr. McCloud. I thoroughly enjoyed this well written novel set in the old West. I have already obtained his next book, in anticipation of another good read.
A young man files claim to a valley with good water. A bully with political ambitions wants the valley. Greed, murder, and plenty of gun play fill this story. It does drag in the end as if the author was not sure how to end the war.
Extremely well written Takes you back I n time and surrounds you with both the majesty and beauty of the surroundings and the storytelling. On a par with the great western writers both past and present.
A novel of the West as a typical western should be. Nate Devlin is a strong main character and the villains are dirt. Spoiler. The good guy wins in the end.
If your right you keep fighting even though it may seem fruitless, you Wii succeed. That's what this adventure proves. Alone trying to build a life for yourself and then someone comes along trying to cheat you out of your land. That's what happened in Devlin's RIDE. He had help from a previous cattle rancher who supplied him with over a hundred heads of cattle. Money, Money and greed equals a nightmare of death. Beautiful descriptions of Oregon landscape, you can almost visualize the areas, colors of the mountains and the foliage in the state. We can only summarize how everything developed...hopefully on the good foot..or maybe I should say HAPPY TRAILS TO EVERYONE TILL WE MEET AGAIN....
This is a really good book. I love the way Devlin was such a good person, even when he had so much heart aches growing up, with the loss of his parents at a young age. He turned into a great and honest man. Was glad to see he got his land and his love. Will be reading more books by, Carson McCloud.
One of the blurbs about this book said something about "in the tradition of Louis L'Armour" and I agree. Written with skill, perception and knowledge. I'm pleased to have discovered this author.
Fast paced and has some surprises along the way. Predictable but still a good story of the hard times in that era when you had to fight for what you wanted. And fight after you got it to keep it.
