Rate this book

wherein Mariya confesses her love to Takeo and he in turn thanks her but also says no, thanks, he is love with Yamato, for real. Discussions between and among all of them ensue about the difference between "liking someone as a person" and "liking them in 'that way,'" about the differences between love and affection, and about the normalcy of some level of jealousy in a relationship. So this first jealousy arc doth end, no blood, no foul, a few tears of pain, some of relief, some of recommitment. Suna behaves adorably in helping various friends navigate this territory, that is new for all of them. Good vehicle for learning about these issues for young people.

This feel-good volume (oh, they are ALL feel good volumes in this series so far) takes us through Christmas and the New Year, and through the highlight of the volume, after months of "I LOVE YOU, YAMATO!!" when (the impatient) Yamato initiates their First Kiss (which Takeo, with his eyes closed, mistakes for a bug brushing his lips!). Suna corrects him, 'Uh, no, dude, you were actually kissed!' and Takeo wants take two so he can be more fully present in the act. Cute, yup.

Kawahara-sensei and Aruko-sensei (illustrator) are in control and having way fun. Me, and the girl (11), too. Hey, got her bro (12) reading it now, too!

Oh, this is just sooooooo pure and sweet. Re-reading this series is the smartest thing I've done all year.

ORIGINAL REVIEW - October 4, 2016

The awesomeness continues through Christmas and New Year's Day, with Takeo getting a very special birthday present.

One of my friends is currently watching the My Love Story!! anime series, and will frequently comment that “Oh, look, someone likes Takeo OH NO WAIT THERE IS NO DRAMA TO BE HAD IN THIS SERIES.” Followed up by me going “That’s it, that’s the series. *still vomits rainbows*” Much like with my worries of reading straight dramatic romance shojo manga, I do kind of worry that My Love Story!! is going to fall into the trap of having zero drama to propel its plot.

That we’re five volumes in and there really hasn’t been much in the way of Takeo and Yamato’s pure innocent relationship, I do worry about the fact of how long can this run on just the idea of “These two beautiful cinnamon rolls need to stay together forever.” (And this is a thing that I also worried with High School Debut as well, although I think there was a little more conflict in there.) The big crux for the first half of this volume is Mariya realizing that she does actually have feelings for Takeo outside of liking him as a friend. But of course it doesn’t happen because Takeo is specifically in love with Yamato but he appreciates the thought. (I kinda felt like Sunakawa and Mariya were going to start to have a thing, but I kinda don’t want them to? I just want Sunakawa to just not be interested in getting a date at all throughout the series.)

We do finally get to see some development in the rest of the cast, specifically between Takeo’s friend Kurihara and Yamato’s friend Nanako at a Christmas party. It’s a cute enough side story—I actually really liked the fact that all of the other guys have this huge standard to live up to because of how Takeo is actually perfect boyfriend and that it’s going to cause problems in their relationships. (I did like that Kurihara is afraid to speak out against Nanako’s harassers, because it’s one thing when Takeo does it, it’s another if he tried it.)

But I think the biggest thing that I liked about the emotional development in this volume is the lead-up to Yamato and Takeo’s first kiss. First of all, Takeo is so innocent that he has a specific plan to when the proper time to have his first kiss is and not realizing that Yamato is waiting for him to finally make a move on her.

This is why I love this series—no, there hasn’t been much in the way of emotional relationship drama, it’s just two nerds figuring out their first real love and fumbling along and it’s so adorable and rainbows and sparkles everywhere. Everywhere. I do understand the concern of “Well, how long can the plot run on this before we all get bored with it?” but the fact that we’re still five volumes in and I haven’t been bored once by it really says something to Kawahara’s writing. I’m still really enjoying this series (still need to watch the anime. I’m planning to catch up, okay!).

This series is great, yet I think I'm nearing the end of me continuing reading the series. Teenage me would BE ALL ABOUT ANTICIPATING THE NEXT VOLUME----but I have so much other stuff to read that I would like to read----and I feel like this story (in general) is great episodically, but doesn't keep my interest enough.

It was a few cute arcs about jealousy, young love's kiss, and all cute naivete. Kawahara had a great premise and while I might catch up once it's all said and done---I'll probably put this series on hold for awhile.

Vol. 1 ★★★★☆
Vol. 2 ★★★★★
Vol. 3 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 4 ★★★★☆

When Saijo first pops up, I was worried the series would go into a downward spiral of jealousy and pettiness. However, the writer actually handles her story well and I like how her arc gets wrapped up. I'm also obsessed with how awkward their first kiss is.

Re-read 2021: OHHH, this was a pretty good volume. Still not a fan of Saijo, and wish she would just leave, thankfully things happen and she doesn't show up so much. I am sorry, but I just think it was dirty of her and it just all felt so awkward.
Takeo has his birthday, there is Christmas and confessions, I loved how Nanako was totally different when she is dating (really, that was just so funny). And that last chapter was perfect, though I also felt a bit for Yamato. I mean, I get it Takeo, but that is not how relationships work. There are two parties in a relationship, not just you. So I am glad what Yamato did, even if Takeo didn't notice, haha.
Also I did get a bit tired, just like the first time, at how often Takeo goes I love you. I mean, it is cute, but it was almost every other page and it just felt like he didn't mean it/felt out of place. Especially give how behind he is with other things relationship-wise.

-------------------------

Bleh, it took Amazon.de 2 months to finally have this one in stock. I seriously hope that the next volume will just come out at the normal time. :|

The book itself was pretty good, but due to it being this late, I already knew the story from the anime. I am happy that the anime follows stuff pretty closely, but I find it is way more fun to have read something before, and then see it animated, then the other way around (see it animated first and then read about it).

This volume brings us several things! Something we have been waiting for (I won't spoil it, but I can just say that I was squealing soooooo hard when I saw it in the anime, and it is pretty nice in the manga as well, it took them long enough, they have been together for some months now). We have a Christmas Party, a Birthday Party (and New Years, as that is Takeo's birthday) and we also got confessions, stress and lots of cute romance between Takeo and Yamato.

Even though that thing that happened at the end, it was a bit awkward. I can't say much about it, because I want it to be a surprise, but it just looked a bit weird.

One thing that I missed, and that was quite a big thing in the anime, was the pregnancy of Takeo's mom. Here it is barely even talked about, and that is a shame. We all know how Takeo loves his mother, and even Yamato was really sweet during this time, and I miss that.

Suna is really a great guy, though I hope that he will also have some luck in the romance department. He seem to only catch the girls that like him and hate his friend. And we all know how Suna is protective of his best friend.

Ah yes, one thing I didn't particularly like, and something I also don't like in the manga, is the fact that Takeo keeps saying: I love her! or I love you! to Yamato. It happens almost every other page and sorry, but instead of me swooning, I am just annoyed with it and thinking if Takeo really means it, or if he is just joking around.

The art is still great, though at times it feels like Takeo is getting bigger and bigger (which isn't a wrong assumption considering that he is probably still growing).
I also love the various close-ups, and the backgrounds are lovely.

All in all, it was still a great manga volume and I really enjoyed it, but I truly hope that the next volume will come out a bit faster. Not 2 months or so later.

Oh sigh, sigh, sigh! This is sooooo sweet! Takeo and Yamato's relationship goes on to the next level and it is all so innocently beautiful. I just love these two winsome teenagers! I do really wish the direction it is headed with Suna wasn't happening, but I suppose there has to be some conflict at some point. I'm just so taken with the charm of this story which is so absolutely not the type of thing I usually go for. Highly recommended for shoujo fans and newbies. This one avoids all the usual tropes.

Cannot get enough of this slice-of-life comedy and our main hero Takeo. I hope Suna gets a little more backstory, though I hope he doesn't get a romance of his own, kinda. I like the simplicity.

Another nice addition to this series!

I’m excited to see where this manga is going, but I feel like nothing very fun has happened so far. I want to see if the series gets better or not because it’s almost as if it’s the same thing happening every time in each volume (getting kind of repetitive). It’s making me feel as if the series will get better, if you know what I mean.

Yamato seems like she always needs saving and can’t do anything by herself except bake. I wish that Takeo had more trust in her (i.e. meaning that he didn’t feel that he had to help her all the time... I guess, although it can be found as something heroic to do). Takeo is very innocent, though, and it made me laugh out loud when he thought a bug was on his lips when Yamato kissed him...

I don’t know if I can fully ship the two main characters, although they are truly soulmates! It’s also getting kind of annoying when Takeo keeps repeating over and over again that he loves Yamato. I understand. He’s only 15-16... But I guess mangas, especially like shoju mangas are like this...?

I can’t say I love this series, but it’s okay enough for me to want to continue reading and hope that something super exciting happens in the next books. I have faith.

This review might seem like it’s pointing out all the bad aspects of this book, but some of the good ones are that it’s funny, and Yamato and Takeo are meant to be together (even if their relationship isn’t all too romantic). Ever since I read the bonus story in volume four, it feels like if I see their relationship in a whole new light. I hope Suna gets someone (or maybe he will always just be the side friend that gives advice to Takeo about his girlfriend and just life in general...). Maybe Suna will have something going on with Saijo, although I doubt it. Nevertheless, I sort of ship them in a way since he was the one that figured things out between her and her crush on Takeo. They seem like a fine couple, although it’s been really annoying when she calls Takeo “coach”....

Overall, a good read, especially to boost my reading challenge. I’ve been lazy... I don’t know if these mangas can really count as books since they’re super short and I guess it’s sort of like cheating, heheh. I’ll be finishing the series and hoping to read other mangas as well soon!

"Los corazones rotos duelen." Suna

¿He mencionado cuanto lo amo?

My Love Story Volume 5 was a little messy and I didn't like that at all. My Love Story usually has two or more storylines within one volume. The first story was about one of Takeo's classmates having a crush on him, the second story was about a Christmas party that Takeo and his friends threw, and the third story was about Takeo and Yamato's first kiss. I liked the last two stories, I didn't like the first story.

Any storyline surrounding women who are NOT Yamato or Takeo's mom are of no interest to me. So far, the only thing the author has done involving other women is making these other women have crushes on Takeo so it adds "drama" to his relationship with Yamato. I'm not here for it. It's boring.

I did like the two Christmas stories, those were very cute. I couldn't stop smiling while reading the second half of this manga.

Overall, I enjoyed most of the manga so I'm giving it 4 stars out of 5

If I haven't already made this clear, then let me say it once more: This story is great! Five books in and I love the "slice-of-life" vibe and just the right kind of cliche to this recipe of high school romance. I was happy to see the development taking place in the beginning and by the ending of this particular book, and a lot of it I'd already remembered from the anime I'd previously watched. Even though the show had already spoiled it, in a sort of way, now, a year or two later, I'm revisiting good memories. I'll never stop smiling and laughing at the faces Takeo makes, especially!
If you aren't already reading this or watching the anime, I'd definitely suggest finding the time to do so. This is the kind of feel-good comedy you shouldn't miss!

This volume!!!! Once again Takeo & Yamato are the cutest couple on the planet, and we must protect them at all costs. I love that we're seeing their relationship progress in such an innocent manner because it really matches their characterization perfectly. On a final note, can we talk about my other fav relationship in this series...Suna & Takeo! They are the greatest pair of friends ever! I love seeing the flashbacks of them as children because it really shows us how they became such close friends. Can't wait for the next volume!!!

*this review is for the entire manga*

1. If you want to read a cute shoujo manga with nice twist, this is the one.

2. The characters are cute, but it’s a shoujo manga so there is some drama.

3. I like the art, this author’s art is my fav.

4. I kinda hoped the author showed us an epilogue about how their relationship went and stuff but all in all I loved it.

5. I enjoyed reading this manga so I totally giving it 5 stars. (I’m sure if I read it in another mood i would give it 4 stars)

I love that even though Saijo was a love rival, she’s still respectful and kind towards both Takeo and Yamato. I adore how cute and akward Takeo and Yamato’s first (and second) kiss was. It perfectly suits their relationship and was precious to see.
Also, I found the bonus chapter cute. I love seeing how Suna is impacted by his friendship with Takeo, without Takeo even realizing it.
