Thorfinn's adventures continue and Hild is with them now, he recovers but then his past comes back in the form of Thorkell and Floki and they want him to lead the Jomsvikings as he is of the proper age and qualifications until he declines and kinda leaves the place but men of Floki are after Thorfinn so he has to evade them and somehow get free until he is met by Eskil and Wrage, Vagn's men which seems like the next big arc. Good volume and has some interesting fights and philosophical questions but the art is just too good, detailed and layered and we continue Thorfinn's mission of Vinland.
FINALLY THORKELL (best girl) SHOWS UP. oh how ive missed him and his Horny for War™ shenanigans. the thrills keep on coming, y'all. it's so riveting to watch how thorfinn wants to become a better person and actively choose not to be violent but be tested at every single step of it. will he persevere or will he give in? i am so fucking stoked to find out.
also the art??? literally UNPARALLELED. one of the best art styles in manga that i have ever come across. the detail, the intricacies, the character design — simply fucking breathtaking. for the art alone it deserves ∞ stars.
Everything seems to happen to poor Thorfinn, not only his past but now his heritage hunts him.
Not as good as volume 17 but i enjoyed it a lot, the comedy was on point and the fight scenes were really good, nice to see a little bit of the old Thorfinn again.
It's nice to see old characters come back to the scene and see how they are doing in times of peace. Thorkell, my man, you are amazing xD.
That chapter with Thorkell suffering from peace was the funniest shit ever, dude xDDDD He never fails to crack me up. Must be the first time a manga has made me laugh so much.
I guess Thorfinn gets to fully comprehend now his father's struggle and why he chose to sacrifice his life that fateful day. It's sad that his sacrifice still wasn't enough, it didn't bring closure – Thorfinn's still not free from the Jomsviking's bullshit just because it so happens that Thors' blood flows through his veins.
More than that, poor fella is also getting that Prince Canute treatment, as opposing fractions of a brand new succession conflict are trying either to get him killed or to use him as a pawn in their game. I honestly didn't see it coming. Who'd ever guess that out of all people Thorfinn would find himself in this position? Well, Askeladd, of course xD He was the first one to point out Thorfinn's high rank, I think he realised the ramifications.
Btw, I'm just wondering now how is it possible that Sigvaldi didn't interfere with his grandson's slavery sentence?
Floki finally gets a bit humanised. Up to this point he was just an ordinary villain who works behind the curtain to protect his own interests. We didn't get to see that much of what kind of person he is deep down. And it turns out he's just insecure, as I suspected. Thors was making him uneasy. I kinda feel for him: I know what it's like to struggle with the inferiority complex, it does make you one hell of a shitty person.
I'm curious whether Thorfinn will be able to liberate himself from his past and the bloodline ties. The plot thickens yet again.
The development of Thorfinn and Hild continues to be exceptionally very good, the dynamic between them continues to keep my interest as Thorfinn wants to leave his past behind but this past doesn't seem to want to move away from him, I think we are starting to see Gudrid's romantic feelings towards Thorfinn? If so, I don't blame her, Thorkell and Floki return they are good characters but I hope they don't delay the story because I already want the expedition to go west.
3 stelle e mezza.
Thorfinn meets Thorkell again and his father's real killer Floki for the first time(he's still unconscious about that). Thorfinn split up with his crew after being chased with Floki's warships, he and Hild are trying to get loose of the persuers.
the weakest of the eastern expedition arc so far, but still rich in character moments and development. thorfinn's character just keeps getting elevated to the next level and clearly there the consequences of his past and who he is in the present is catching up to him way more now
