Bakery owner Joy Cooke is known around town for her scrumptious cakes, flaky pastries, and her killer chocolate tart. But when Joy's client, a batty bride-to-be, learns her ex-boyfriend is dead after eating one of Joy's desserts, the bakery becomes the center of a murder investigation. With the help of a spacy assistant and a fluffy cat named Cheesecake, Joy sets out to find the murderer. Her investigation points to her number one competitor in town, but would Joy's rival Maple McWayne resort to murder to put her out of business?
This was a fun and quick mystery, and even though there weren't many suspects, I still didn't guess the killer. That was a surprise for sure until Joy figured it out. Patty Cakes sounds like a great little bakery that I'd definitely visit. There was a little side mystery that I wasn't sure would be answered, but I was happy to see that at the very end Joy got her answer on that as well.
A simple and "sweet" (in a good way) beginning--but no middle/no plot or character development (especially the murderer) and therefore no suspense--and a rushed/telling ending. Also--too many mentions of the assistant's predilection for sweet tea. These actions sometimes sneak in while the author isn't looking (like lighting a cigarette or making coffee or tugging at a lock of hair, etc.) and need to be gone over, spotted and weeded out. (I learned this from, of all places, watching Mystery Science Theater 3K--repetitious "stage business".)
A solid cozy. Not brilliant but a good read. Making a cake for a wedding should have been fine but not when eating it results in the death of an ex boyfriend of the bride. How and why did he die? Was the rival baker to blame? Nice twist at the end. However the blurb stated the her cat is involved in the investigation - sorry but I missed that bit somewhere.
For once the sleuth is not trying to solve the crime in the usual inept way. She is checking out her competition as the source of the attack on her business, but only accidentally finds out what is going on. The story is really about her baking not sleuthing! I love this approach. It is well written and kept me guessing and reading until the end.
Joy now runs the bakery her mother had started. Along with Sara Beth as her assistant. Before closing .Detective Sugar comes in to ask questions and to see the kitchen. A man has died after eating a tart from there. The name meant nothing to either of them. As she was leaving a car tried to run into her, A different approach to a murder, plot flow, unique characters, made this enjoyable to read.
Joy runs a bake shop and using her mom's special spices makes the best desserts. She is the cake baker for the local wedding, suddenly a man dies from eating something she made. Joy can't lose the shop so she has to go out and solve this murder. This is a cute easy read. I like the descriptions of the baked goods and the town sounds delightful.
This was a good cozy mystery from the very beginning. It got even better as it went along. It was very exciting at the end and had a surprise ending. I enjoyed reading this book very much. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading a good clean cozy mystery.
This was a enjoyable and quick read . The characters are well drawn . The story flows smoothly with a surprising end . Hopefully the rest of the series is as fun to read .
This was one of those books I got for free on Amazon and I was glad I did, that's actually how I find most of the series that I read. It was cute but I was sad it was so short but I will be looking for more books. There is a preview of another book by the same author that I had already read that is worth checking out. It would be nice to watch and see how this author does, she has some great characters and you can't go wrong with the beach and a bakery.
Kindle Unlimited, cardboard characters, fill in the blank situation/reaction, 2/3 at most of the 'book' per story with rest filler from another totally unrelated story. Does the same with her other 'books', 2/3 at most of actual 'story' then flips at end to the other series.
