The Haunting of Castle Keyvnor, Book #3 Greetings, In regards to the Matter of the un-entailed Estate of the late-Jonathan Hambly, 10th Earl of Banfield, be advised that your attendance is urgently required at the reading of his lordship’s Last Will & Testament, to take place on November 1st of this year at Castle Keyvnor in Bocka Morrow, Cornwall. Regards, Mr. Timothy Hunt, Esq.
When the late-Earl of Banfield’s distant relations descend upon Bocka Morrow, they’ll find gypsies, witches, pixies, smugglers, and one very haunted castle. And if they’re lucky, they might just fall in love while they’re there.
MYSTIFIED, The Haunting of Castle Keyvnor includes:
Renee Bernard’s The Sweetest Curse Blade Hambly believes in three things: logic, science and the notion that if a man just keeps his eyes forward, he is unlikely to be tripped up by the past. But how does a man keep his thoughts cool and focused when he meets a young woman like Miss Elethea Fairfax? A woman who heals with the touch of her hands, who talks to the air and radiates magic with every other-worldly fluttering of her eyelashes? What does a man of science do when the woman he is falling in love with is a witch?
Jerrica Knight-Catania's Possessed by the Stranger Lady Samantha Priske can hardly wait to make herself scarce in the allegedly haunted residence of her late great uncle, the Earl of Banfield. And when she meets a handsome stranger who is blessedly not a relation, she finds herself flirting uncharacteristically with him. Chadwick Kendall isn’t thrilled to be at Castle Keyvnor for the blasted will reading. His father is dying, and he’d rather be by his side. But Chad finds something at Castle Keyvnor far more valuable than anything the earl could have left for him: A beautiful redhead, whom he must convince to be his bride.
Erica Monroe's The Mad Countess Theodore Lockwood, Earl of Ashbrooke, has been in love with his best friend, Lady Claire Deering, for as long as he can remember. Claire too harbors a secret desire for him—but a witch cursed her family with madness, and she’s terrified she’ll only hurt him if they act on their feelings. When a will reading at a mysterious castle in Cornwall brings them both together, they’ll work to break her family’s curse…and find true love.
The Haunting of Castle Keyvnor includes twelve Regency romance novellas. Don’t miss the anthologies Vexed, Bedeviled, and Spellbound.
What in the world is a retired Navy chaplain’s daughter doing writing scorching hot historical romances and paranormal graphic novels? Renee Bernard is applying a great education from traveling all over the world to story telling and doing her best to keep her father proud. Truthfully, her father is her number one fan, even though he has sworn never to read a single word of her books (a vow he has kept to this day!) Nothing stops him from telling everyone he knows that his daughter is now a USA Today Bestselling author or from handing out bookmarks on the golf course. Love can make even a minister do strange things!
Renee Bernard is a freelance writer and host of “Canned Laughter and Coffee” on Readers Entertainment, as well as a contributor to Romantic Times BookReviews magazine. Renee currently lives in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California. (Note an interesting proximity to great wineries!)
So far, I’ve had the pleasure of reading only THE MAD COUNTESS by Erica Monroe, and this novella alone is worth getting the MYSTIFIED anthology.
THE MAD COUNTESS by Erica Monroe
The Mad Daughter, that’s how they call Lady Claire Deering behind her back. Claire believes she is cursed: her mother and aunt both finished their days in the Ticehurst lunatic asylum. Claire, along with her faithful maid Kinney, is travelling to Castle Keyvnor to hear the reading of a will. The castle is reputed to be haunted and there’s a witches’ coven nearby. Claire is hoping, and not hoping to see her old friend Theodore “Teddy” Lockwood, however she didn’t know he was coming. She’s in love with him, but won’t do anything because of the madness in her family. Teddy doesn’t like change of any kind, and is quite mystified at being the new Earl of Ashbrooke, a title which he recently inherited. Teddy is attempting to conquer his various fears, he’s trying to be daring and it is, to say the least, trying! Teddy has been in love for ages with Claire, but he’s afraid she’ll refuse his marriage proposal, and he’d rather keep her as a friend than be turned down.
Erica Monroe is one of my favourite authors, I have always loved her writing, and in THE MAD COUNTESS, Ms. Monroe shines as never before. Her prose is more subdued, even richer and more nuanced, the surroundings appear in all their finest details, the touch of paranormal feels totally real, and the dialogues sound natural, as always. Ms. Monroe is a wizard at creating convincing characters, I love her heroes, and Teddy might be my favourite so far; he is quite the surprising fellow! As for Claire, I thought it rather extraordinary, but the character is so meticulously crafted that when reading her dialogues, I knew precisely how she sounded; her voice was translated so well in words, that I could hear her, and this happens very seldom indeed. THE MAD COUNTESS is full of unexpected plot twits, and the romance is almost too gorgeous for words. THE MAD COUNTESS is in some ways a bit of a departure for Erica Monroe, and it is a resounding success. THE MAD COUNTESS is a most wondrous, beautiful, and touching love story; just wonderful!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Erica Monroe in exchange for an honest review.
She’s going to go insane. For most of her Lady Claire Deering has known this will be her fate; after all her Mom and her aunt suffered, and died from, this curse. A curse put on the family by a spiteful witch long before she was born. Knowing her fate Claire has determined she will remain a spinster, never falling in love. If only she wasn’t already in love with her best friend.
Theodore Lockwood’s, Earl of Ashbrooke, friends encourage him to go after the woman he has loved since childhood. When the reading of her great-uncle’s will, who also happens to be related to one of his closest friends, Theodore takes the opportunity to tag along, conquer some fears and convince the lady he loves that together they can make things work.
Claire’s conviction that she will suffer the curse and her desire to protect the man she loves to her hope and desperation that maybe things can turn out differently are very well written. Theodore’s skepticism to his determination to make things work and his willingness to do whatever it takes to make Claire had me falling in love with him. Toss in the curse, a spell breaking ritual, and a huge surprise and you have an excellent read by Erica Monroe.
Possess by the Stranger by Jerrica Knight-Catania
The very last place Chadwick Kendall wants to be is a haunted castle at a will reading for a friend of his father’s. He’d much rather be by his father’s side as he lay dying; the man who has been there for him and loved him enough for a father and mother. Torn between staying with his father or following his dying wish Chad makes his way to Castle Keyvnor to what may be the best thing that happens to him when he sees the image of a red-headed angel.
Lady Samantha Priske can’t wait to explore what’s reported to be a haunted castle, if only she can escape her mother’s harping. If her mother is not complaining about one thing it’s another – her sister’s belief that she’s sees ghosts, Samantha’s red hair, her lack of conducting herself properly, etc. When she’s finally able to slip away from the latest tirade she makes her way to the turrets to view the beauty of the landscape below; a landscape that includes the sight of a man that makes her heart race more than the eerie sounds from close by.
A first encounter that has Samantha literally falling to each meeting thereafter is filled with longing and despair (as Samantha knows her parents will never approve). Add in a meddlesome little brother, a determined hero, a heroine who follows her heart and a surprise and you have another excellent story by the talented Jerrica Knight-Catania.
The Sweetest Curse by Renee Bernard
Miss Elethea Fairfax has lived her entire life caught between being the daughter and helper of the local doctor and the daughter/granddaughter of a “witch” with healing properties of her own. No matter the situation she allows her father to take all the credit when it comes to healing; something that recently hasn’t felt right; especially when the new heir presumptive falls ill practically at her feet. Determined to do all she can to save his life she does her best to not fall in love; after all, he’s from a different class and can never be hers. Not to mention his family suffers from a curse because of a witch and blame has be laid at her grandmother’s coven. Heaven help her if he or his family ever finds out she is the one who tended him and he dies. And if he survives can she forsake him to break the family’s curse?
Blade Hambly, heir presumptive to the Earl of Banfield, is not happy about the eventuality of his title. He’d rather be studying science and working with his machines; definitely not on this trip to the reading of the late earl’s will. And definitely not falling ill – he’s never ill! As he drifts in and out he is comforted by the presence of an angel; one with a healing touch which defies all logic as he knows it but is it only a dream when he wakes to find the doctor claiming credit for his survival? Realizing his angel was no dream can he convince her that class does not matter? Or that to break the curse she belongs with him?
Adored this tale by Renee Bernard of a hero who is not full of himself (other than deny he’s ever ill) and a heroine caught between two different lives and one she would love to have. Ms. Bernard writes where I felt Elly’s every conflict – loyalty to her father, her love of her grandmother and her craft, to her despair of loving and losing Blade.
This book had the best novella I have read so far in this series but unfortunately, the other two didn't really work for me.
The Mad Countess, Erica Monroe - 5 stars (I would give it more if I could). This was the best novella so far in this series! I LOVED it! Claire and Teddy have been the best of friends for years and each loves the other - but they don't share their feelings for each other for very different reasons. Claire is cursed and is certain she will eventually go mad like her mother and her aunt. She loves Teddy with all that she is, but she will not condemn him to life with a mad wife. Teddy has loved Claire for as long as he can remember and she is the only woman he would even consider spending his life with, but fear of rejection and the loss of her friendship have kept him quiet - until now. Teddy is ready to put his fears behind him and win the woman he loves - all he has to do is convince Claire that there is no curse - or is there?
Awesome story, loved Claire and Teddy. Teddy is sigh worthy - for so many reasons but the biggest is because he waited for Claire - she was his first everything and probably his last as well!! I swear this going on my very short list of books to read again!!
Possessed by the Baron, Jerrica Knight-Catania - 3.5 stars. I liked Chadwick aka Chad, but I found Samantha to be a bit stupid. She likes him, but she can't marry him because he is a commoner and her parents won't approve?! I still don't know why she is convinced he is a commoner - just because he is a mere mister? That makes zero sense. And why didn't she ask about him instead of just assuming or better yet ask him? She finally decides to defy her parents and gives her heart, soul and body to him, even before she finds out the truth about him. But by then it was too little, too late for me.
The Sweetest Curse, Renee Bernard - 2.5/3 stars. This was the odd duck in the series. It was a strange mix of first person and third person narrative and was a tad hard to follow. Elethea and Blade are both likable enough - but I didn't feel the connection and there was zero steam in this novella. The story had potential, but just didn't have enough depth to make it believable.
Erica Monroe's novella alone was worth the purchase price of the book ten times over and was the highlight of this entire series collection.
The three stories in Mystified all have the Castle Keyvnor located in Bocka Morrow in Cornwall, England in the forefront of each story along with the death of the current earl. Mystified nicely continues with all new stories from Vexed and Bedeviled, the first two books in the series, concerning some of the same characters and circumstances as well as others we meet. The castle is considered to be haunted by many and is definitely gloomy and foreboding with lots of rooms and even four turrets, spiraling staircases without any handrails, as well as lots of stone and gardens. The stories surround the reading of the will which is why everyone is visiting the castle whether they want to be there or not. The stories are short and very quick reads with well defined characters and plots that left me wanting more. The Earl's Will is at the back of the book and gives closure to what the stories are about. There's only one remaining book in the series, Spellbound.
The Mad Countess by Erica Monroe is Claire's story because madness runs in her family or does it? Claire lives her life not knowing when the madness will strike her as it did her mother and aunt. But is that any way to live? She doesn't plan on a future since she expects to be hospitalized and die young. The nickname she's been given is the Mad Daughter which struck terror in my heart for others to be so cruel. Teddy is an earl and loves to research things. He and Claire were childhood friends but neither ever spoke of their true feelings. Now that they are unexpectedly thrown together at the castle their feelings are unleashed but is it for naught? A trip to town plays a significant role in the story along with some of the townspeople. There was an unexpected happily ever after along with nice closure due to the epilogue that takes place one year after the reading of the will. Monroe is a new to me author and I look forward to reading more of her books.
Possessed by the Stranger by Jerrica Knight-Catania has Chad and Samantha at its core and both were enjoyable characters that definitely had their work cut out for them. It didn't help that Chad didn't reveal his true background but made Sam think he was a commoner and not a peer which wouldn't fit into her parent's plans for her marriage.Talk about miscommunication! There were quite a few twists and turns to the story and I didn't always like how Samantha treated Chad - hot one minute and cold the next which could stretch on for a day or two. Samantha's brother, Toby, was involved in the storyline and gave a bit of comedic relief. There was a happily ever after in the offing but the story needed an epilogue because of the abrupt ending which didn't give me the closure I hoped for. Knight-Catania is a new to me author and I look forward to reading more of her books and hope there's better closure.
The Sweetest Curse by Renee Bernard is the only story that hasn't taken place at least in some part at the castle. It has Elethea Fairfax, daughter of the town's doctor but also the granddaughter of Maevis, the wisest of the witches in the Circle, front and center. Her father doesn't practice magic - he's a doctor and a scientist - and is not always happy that his daughter does. But when he needs her help because he can't be in two places at once he seems okay with it but never gives her credit for her actions or work. She helps heal Blade Hambly who gets very sick on the way to the castle for the reading of the will when their paths unexpectedly cross at the Mermaid's Kiss in town where his driver stops to rest his horses not knowing that Blade is ill. When Elethea and Blade meet there's an instant attraction although since he's delirious with a high fever he thinks she's an angel. When their paths continue to cross they get to know each other a little better. There are curses, magic and getting to know you better chats. There is some closure but an epilogue would have been great as in many of the other stories. There's a happily ever after in the offing. Bernard is a new to me author and I look forward to reading her historical romances.
The Mad Countess - Erica Monroe - 4 /5 - Claire and Teddy, Lord Ashbrooke, have been friends and neighbors since they were kids, and both secretly love the other. But Teddy has always been cautious and is afraid to tell Claire of his feelings, having sat by for the past 7 seasons and watched Claire. Claire, for her part, as much as she loves Teddy, will not tell him of her feelings because it will trap him in marriage to a woman who is cursed to become insane. Although Teddy doesn’t give the curse any credence, Claire strongly believes it and lives in doubt that she’s hanging onto sanity, having seen her mother and aunt go through it. At Castle Keyvnor, Claire finds people willing to help her rid her of the curse, and Teddy must decide if he loves Claire enough to support her in this. Claire and Teddy were absolutely adorable - I love the fact that Teddy so loved Claire from the start that he was willing to wait for her...yes, he was a virgin and their first (and unfortunately only) time had that delightfully sweet and awkward feel to it...which is kinda why I wanted a balanced second try for them. So I loved the two of them together. The resolution of the curse with the witches coven was borderline for me - I think I kinda thought it was hokey... But, Teddy and Claire overshadowed even that.
Possessed by the Stranger - Jerrica Knight-Catania - 3 /5 - This one follows a story hinted at in the first book of the series, that of Chadwick Kendall and Samantha Priske. She’s an 18 year old hoyden with an awful mother who is looking for adventure at Castle Keyvnor. He’s a quite soon to be Baron whose father is on his deathbed, but he’s sent off to the reading of the will. He’s sad and mopey but he finds Samantha who makes him happy again. Within less than 2 days he’s ready to ask her to marry him, but Samantha’s parents aren’t going to approve of the marriage, since she doesn’t realize he’s nobility. This was actually kinda bland...I did have a moment or two where I was kinda bored. It picks up in the last part, when Samantha starts pushing Chad away and they end up having sex suddenly. But aside from that, nothing much happens in this one. It was just okay.
The Sweetest Curse - Renee Bernard - 2.5 /5 - Blade Hambly, the heir apparent of the Earl of Banfield arrives in Bocka Morrow only to fall flat on his face, suffering from Scarlet Fever. He is nursed back to health by Elethea Fairfax, the doctor’s daughter, who he believes is an angel, but when he wakes, only the doctor is there. Elethea is a witch with the local coven and her father strongly disapproves of her dabbling in folk medicine (although he has no idea she’s a witch), and to save his pride, lies about Elethea’s presence at Blade’s sickbed. But Blade finds her and remembers her, and despite his very logical mind, he is drawn to the mysterious Elethea. This was a bit underwhelming too, but it had a lot of potential. Blade and Elethea were a good match and I think only needed a bit more time together to have a believable romance. They were the best part of this story. However, it’s told in an alternating first person POV with no clear distinction between who gets the talking time. Normally it’s divided by chapter or something, but when either character could be saying, “I….” then it gets confusing about who is talking. I also didn’t like how this story so suddenly ended, with no closure regarding Elethea’s father or even an epilogue. It was needed.

The Mad Countess by Erica Monroe This is one of my top three in The Haunting of Castle Keyvnor anthologies! I was so engrossed in it that I read it in about an hour. I loved that they had been best friends forever because it made the story even better and everything happens at a great pace because of it. The rain in the maze scenes are my all time favorites and what some dreams are made of. I loved the detail that went into the witches and everything when breaking the curse (another favorite scene). Finding out a bit more about her mother and aunt was great especially finding out it was a curse and why the curse was put on them. My favorite lines included unicorns.
Claire's heart is in the right place at all times. She thought she wasn't strong, but she was because she visited her mother when most wouldn't and she didn't run from anything. I loved her spirit and how close she was to her maid.
Teddy is someone you fall in the love with from the start. He is not your typical hero he has many fears, loves to learn, and when he sets his mind to something he does it. I loved everything about him from the way he did things to the openness of his heart. He never lied or brushed off anything without proof and wanted to help.
The ending was amazing! I wasn't left wondering about anything.
Possessed by the Stranger by Jerrica Knight-Catania This was a great read. The beginning with Chad will pull at your heart and you will feel for Samantha from the start. Little Toby was once again driving his sisters crazy by trying to protect them. I loved how they first saw each other and were drawn to each other so quickly. There is so much to love about this one from seeing the gypsy wedding to the ending that leaves you wanting more because it was fantastic.
Samatha is different from her sister. She always seems to say the wrong thing but doesn't shrink away from anything. I loved how she tried to be like her mother wanted, but her true self always showed. When she set her mind to something she meant it.
Chad is someone that I don't think could ever make someone mad. He is just so sweet and loveable. I loved how close he was with his father and that he didn't care about titles. He understood her when no one else did.
You will love this one.
The Sweetest Curse by Renee Bernard The beginning will suck you thinking the curse has struck someone else. I loved seeing a bit more about the coven and the small battle between science and magic. Elethea's father and grandmother are both very different in how they want her to be, but they both want her to be happy. I loved the parts where she used her touch to heal! This was a little fast paced, but it still was a great story.
Elethea seems like a very quiet girl that does as she is told but she does have a mind. I was not expecting her to stand up for herself when she did and it made me love her even more. She was very sweet and loved to take care of people.
Blade's name draws you to him. I loved that he didn't try to explain away what he saw or was told like most men of science would. He tried to avoid the past and the curse out of fear of what his mother had said before she died and how his father raised him.
I started out reading this collection with Erica Monroe's Novella. I have moved on to the others and will come back and place an individual review of each story- for the whole collection is excellent! The characters are delightful, imaginative, and fully developed. The story lines are creative and unpredictable. I was enthralled. I highly recommend this book's collection. However, at this time-I am placing a short review on the first story written by Mrs. Monroe. I plan to do the same later for the others. This review by no means gives away the details of the story.
"The Mad Countess" - Story One By: Erica Monroe
Lady Claire Deering and her maid, Kinney, travel from Cornwall to the Castle Keyvnor for the reading of her late Uncle Jonathan's will. Lady Claire dreads going-she knows she will hate being there. It is another reminder of the madness curse that plagues her family — the curse that stands between her and any happiness she can ever have in her life.
A generation past, a curse was placed on the women in her family — and their children-because her grandfather refused to recognize a women who believed herself his progeny. Denied the same lifestyle of his pampered daughter, the young woman placed this curse of madness and death upon their heads. For Claire, this curse accounts for the madness that took over the lives of the women in her family right after they were married and had children. Her aunt lost her child and then her mind. Her own mother followed-dying just a short while ago in a horrible sanitarium. Claire felt it was just a matter of time. It wasn't as if she had an option for love and a future. The ton had already labeled her-already whispered that she has the madness disease herself. That pretty much took care of her hopes for a match this past season and seasons past. Oh, Claire does have a love in her life--her childhood friend and best buddy, Teddy, but she can never tell him, out of fear. She would never risk his future by tying him to someone like her-someone whose mind would eventually cage her whole body into a world of madness.
But when Claire arrives at the dark and foreboding castle, the first person she runs into is her very best friend Theodore--Teddy. It is so unexpected. He tells her he is here to support his friend, who is also there for the reading of the will. But he is really here for her, although he cannot bring himself to tell her. He has never told her how he feels-although the friends he is here with know of his feelings.
Strange things are known to happen at the haunted castle. Theodore Lockwood, the Earl of Ashbrooke, believes in what is real. He believes in science-not magic and curses and that sort of stuff. But he has been in love with Lady Claire since he was a small child. He is here to help her-knowing she is afraid to be here at this castle because of the curse she feels is on her family. He wants to marry her but knows he needs to first help her find a way to escape this curse she feels is on her-- or she will never consent to marry him. Can they find that pathway to love and happiness?
I was transfixed - reading from beginning to end. I didn't put it down until the end. Erica Monroe does an excellent job transporting the reader from Cornwall to the very haunted walls of one very dark, dank castle. This is a slight departure from Ms. Monroe's other stories. But she does a phenomenal job with all of the paranormal facets of the story - as with everything else. She is an excellent writer.
The Earl of Banfield has passed on and relatives, close and distant, have been summoned to Castle Keyvnor for the reading of the will. Some came alone, some with family, and some with friends. Not everyone will be involved with the will, but they will be involved with each other and the mysteries of Castle Keyvnor. Travel along. You‰Ûªll enjoy the spooky vacation.
In Mystified we meet three couples as each attempts to explain and deal with the elements of the haunted castle.
The Mad Countess by Erica Monroe Lady Claire Deering and Theodore Lockwood, Earl of Ashbrooke, have always been best friends, and now they are in love. Claire fears acting on that love because she is afraid she will suffer the same madness (brought about by an angry witch‰Ûªs curse) that claimed the lives and sanity of her mother and aunt. Teddy fears a lot of things, including telling Claire how he feels. He is determined to conquer his fears, her curse (although he really doesn‰Ûªt believe in it), and find true love with Claire. Sounds good, right? Can they conquer the curse and find their happily ever after? Maybe. If they follow the advice of one of the castle ‰Û÷ghosts‰Ûª and trust the local coven of witches, they might find what they seek.
This is a wonderful story. The hero and heroine are brave, very much in love, and tug at your heartstrings. Each of the strong secondary characters fits a niche in the story and fills the role beautifully. There are twists and surprises in this well-written story. Read and enjoy this one. You‰Ûªd have to be mad not to (couldn‰Ûªt resist).
Possessed By the Stranger by Jerrica Knight-Catania Chadwick Kendall‰Ûªs father is dying. He has come to Keyvnor Castle in his father‰Ûªs stead for the reading of the will. He would prefer to be home at his father‰Ûªs side in his last hours. Lady Samantha Priske is here with her family. Returning from a walk around the castle, Chad meets Sam and her precocious little brother, Toby. For Chad and Samantha, it‰Ûªs love at first sight. Chad has decided to make the beautiful red-haired Sam his wife. Sam would like nothing better, but is convinced her parents will not approve (they excel at not approving things and people) because he is just a ‰Û÷Mister.‰Û He has not told her he will soon be a Baron. To make matters worse, it seems one of the castle ghosts doesn‰Ûªt want them together either. When Chad leaves suddenly without explaining why, Sam is distraught. Why did he leave so suddenly? What‰Ûªs a girl to do? Go after him of course. Can she find him? What will happen if she does? And which ghost had it in for the couple? Read the story. It will answer all these questions. You‰Ûªll like this one. The characters endearing (Toby is a hoot!) and the story entertaining.
The Sweetest Curse by Renee Bernard Can a witch and an engineer fall in love? He is all science and logic and she believes in magic. Blade Hambly‰Ûªs father just became the Earl of Banfield, making him the heir presumptive. On his way to the Castle for the reading of the will, he becomes ill with scarlt fever. Elethea Fairfax is coming into the inn at the same time, and will take care of him until her father comes. Elethea is doctor‰Ûªs daughter and granddaughter of a witch. She often helps her father, understands herbal medicine, and believes in magic. By the time her father arrives, Blade‰Ûªs fever has broken. The doctor takes credit and doesn‰Ûªt mention his daughter. Blade thinks he dreamed Elethea until she stops by to check on him. They get to know more about each other. They are from different worlds. Is it possible for them to find love? It just might be. Elethea has a secret passed to her by her grandmother. It could mean love or heartache. In this one you get interesting characters and an engaging story. The hero and heroine are willing to take risks to find love for themselves and others in the castle. Only one way to find out, read and enjoy.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is the third book in the collection of stories about The Haunting of Castle Keyvnor. The first story in the book is by Erica Monroe. Lady Claire Deering and Theodore (Teddy) Lockwood, Earl of Ashbrooke have been lifelong friends – both of whom are in love with the other but afraid to say so for fear of ruining the friendship. Claire won’t allow anything between them because she is afraid she has inherited the madness of her mother and aunt. Teddy was born a spare and didn’t feel he had much to offer until he suddenly became the earl. Teddy is a bit of a nerd. He’s bookish and always looking for answers in books. When Claire and Teddy find out that her family isn’t mad but cursed, they must both put aside their preconceived notions of the rational and believable and accept the possibility of other forces of nature. One of the most beautiful scenes in this story is when Teddy and Claire make love for the first time, 2 virgins who had saved themselves for the other. The second story is by Jerrica Knight-Catania – a favorite of mine. This is a delightful tale of love at first sight. Chadwick Kendall is at the Castle because his father received a notice about the reading. Unfortunately, his father, Baron Dinedor, is on his death bed. He asks his son Chad to go, knowing that he might not last until his son returns. When Chad arrives and gets out of the carriage, he looks up and sees a beautiful woman with red hair. At the same time, Lady Samantha Priske, who is out walking on the turret walk looks down and sees a handsome man. All she can think is that she hopes he’s not her cousin. These two don’t need ghosts to bring them together – the attraction is immediate. There is only one problem, Sam’s parents would never allow her to marry a mere Mister and Mr. Chad Kendall did not let anyone know that he is soon to be a Baron. Even being without a title does not stop Sam from allowing Chad to make love to her. The next morning he is gone. It has nothing to do with her but he sees the ghost of his dead mother and she encourages him to go home to be with his father. Will Sam ever see him again? Will they find their Happily Ever After? You’ll have to read the story to find out the rest but it is a delightful story to read. Renee Bernard rounds out this collection with a story of a witch and an engineer who have opposite beliefs except when it comes to falling in love. Blade Hambly is heir to the Earl of Hambly (the one who just inherited). He is on his way to the Castle for the reading of the will but something’s not right. As he gets out of the carriage in town, he collapse with Scarlet Fever. Luckily for him, Elethea Fairfax, the doctor’s daughter just happened to be at the inn and takes over his care immediately. Besides being the doctor’s daughter, she is also the daughter and grand-daughter of a witch and she understands the use of herbal remedies. She send for her father but works all night to reduce the fever. As the dawn breaks so does his fever but her father shows up to take credit for the cure. Because Blake was out of it while he was feverish he thinks he dreamed of his angel. But when she stops by to check on him (against her father’s wishes) he knows she is real. Can two people who are from such different classes really fall in love and make it work? Can Blade really accept the fact that there is magic in the world? Can anyone really believe that someone is named Blade –just kidding on this one)? This story was the perfect ending to the trio of stories. With the love between them, the curse is lifted and everyone can live and love happily ever after. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
Erica Monroe's The Mad Countess Theodore Lockwood, Earl of Ashbrooke, has been in love with his best friend, Lady Claire Deering, for as long as he can remember. Claire too has loved him for as long as she can remember, but a witch cursed her mother & aunt with madness, and she’s terrified she’ll only hurt him if they act on their feelings. Claire travels to Castle Keyvnor with her father for the will reading. She didn’t expect to see Teddy but he’s travelled with his close friends, Jack, Michael & Hal. Teddy trained for the law before the death of his brother meant he became the Earl, he has had his fears but is now striving to conquer then but wants Claire by his side. A rain storm, seeing her aunt & a witches coven all have a bearing on their HEA. I found this story to be a little slow to begin with but the pace increased as did my liking for the two main characters. 3.5 stars
Jerrica Knight-Catania's Possessed by the Stranger Chadwick Kendall’s father, Baron Dinedor is dying. He’s been asked to go to Castle Keyvnor for the will reading, he asks Chad to go in his place. Chad agrees to go if his father will tell him about his mother who died when he was born. Lady Samantha Priske can hardly wait to make herself scarce in the allegedly haunted residence of her late great uncle, the Earl of Banfield, she goes to the rooftop walkway & on looking down sees a gorgeous man who she hopes isn’t a cousin. When she descends she literally falls into Chad. Chad & Sam are immediately attracted to each other but she knows her sister Cassy needs to wed first & her parents won’t entertain a plain mister. Their courtship isn’t straight forward, locked & slamming doors & acorns plus orange hair all add to a delightful story. So refreshing and touching for the hero to really care for his father & to want to be with him for his final days. 5 stars
Renee Bernard’s The Sweetest Curse Blade Hambly is on his way to Castle Keyvnor for the will reading, his coach stops at The Mermaid’s Kiss Inn in Bocka Morrow to change the horses. On alighting from the coach Blade collapses, luckily for him Miss Elethea Fairfax, Doctor Fairfax’s daughter & grand daughter of Maeve Grayson is approaching the inn & quickly has blade installed in a bedroom. A message is sent for her father but he’s attending a birth so it’s left to Ella to nurse Blade through the fever. Blade thinks an angel is tending him, Ella’s never seen such a handsome man. A very sweet story of how two people with differing views can triumph. Some parts of the scenario did stretch my belief ie why change horses within walking distance of the destination? But it’s fiction & the pair wouldn’t have met otherwise 3.5 stars
The third three stories in a four book series making twelve novellas in total about the relatives & friends gathering for the Earl Of Banfield’s will reading at Castle Keyvnor in Cornwell. The six hundred year old castle has seen its share of history & is haunted. These are three well-written novellas that kept me turning the pages, the diamond in this collection is Jerrica’s story, it pressed all the buttons. I really enjoy the way the authors work together to intertwine their stories. Definitely stories I will revisit I received an ARC copy
The Haunting of Castle Keyvnor is a collection of 4 books, each containing three novellas by different authors, the stories all taking place in and around the notoriously haunted Castle Keyvnor during the gathering of the family and friends of the recently deceased Jonathan Hambly, the Earl of Banfield, for the reading of his will. The books can be read in any order, as all the stories take place concurrently. It's a charming device because while each story is a standalone complete unto itself, many of the same characters appear and reappear in each of the novellas, so we get to observe them in different circumstances. All the stories have a little (or a lot) of supernatural flavor, with ghosts, pixies, demons and the like either aiding, thwarting or trying to murder the main characters. Having a collection like this is as delightful as going to a Tapas bar and sampling fabulously prepared tidbits of food—the tastings make you want more! I definitely plan to seek out more works by some of the authors who I'd never read before. I thoroughly enjoyed each of the collections.
Erica Monroe's "The Mad Countess" Theodore Lockwood, Earl of Ashbrooke, is someone who we would call a "nerd" in today's vernacular. He is afraid of heights, spiders, and green space to name but a few phobias. He is also socially awkward, researching, thinking and rethinking every situation in which he might find himself. But when the girl who he's secretly been in love with since they were children needs him to assist her and protect her, he steps up gallantly. Lady Claire Deering, afraid she is doomed to suffer the madness that claimed her mother and aunt, won't give in to her love for Teddy, not waiting to saddle him with a madwoman for a wife. When the witches coven in Bocka Morrow offers to intervene, it will take all of the faith the two lovers can muster to claim their HEA.
Renee Bernard’s "The Sweetest Curse" When Blade Hambly (who "never falls ill") is laid low by scarlet fever, he is nursed back to health by the angelic daughter of the local physician, Miss Elethea Fairfax. But her belief in magic and witchcraft goes against the science and logic which drive him. Exceptionally witty and funny dialogue distinguishes this excellent story.
Jerrica Knight-Catania's "Possessed by the Stranger" While still well written and pleasant, this story had less "story" than the other books in these collections. Lady Samantha Priske sees Chadwick Kendall as he arrives and is immediately attracted to him, especially when she learns he is no relation. But because she believes he is just a "Mister" and not a Peer, she fears her parents won't approve.

This is a fun series! As all the stories from the for books take place the same week, we keep getting glimpses of the other characters in all the stories. It's fun to see why something happened inn another story and to see the different viewpoints of the characters. It must have taken great collaboration! I was given Ann ARC for an honest review.
Book 3 of 4 in The Haunting of Castle Keyvnor (4 Book Series) by Renee Bernard, Erica Monroe, and Jerrica Knight-Catana. Wow! Another great read in this intricately woven series of "The Haunting of Castle Keyvnor"!
**"The Haunting of Castle Keyvnor includes twelve Regency romance novellas. Don’t miss the anthologies Vexed, Bedeviled, and Spellbound."**
Renee Bernard’s The Sweetest Curse.
Blade Hambly believes in only three things: science, logic and he has a notion that if a man stays focused, and keeps looking forward, he won't get tripped by his past. But, he finds his logic might be a bit faulty when he meets, Miss Elethea Fairfax. A woman who can heal with just a touch of her masterful hands, she talks to nothing, and radiates with magic just by fluttering her eyelashes. What, can she be a witch? How can a man of logic and science fall in love with a woman whose possibly a witch? There must be another scientific explanation, or is there? An intriguing and masterfully fascinating story. What a great read!

Erica Monroe's The Mad Countess is one of my favorite Regency authors and she never disappoints her readers.
Meet, Theodore Lockwood, Earl of Ashbrooke, he has been in love with his best friend, Lady Claire Deering, for what seems like forever. But Lady Claire refuses to act on her regards and secret desires for Theodore due to a dreaded curse, placed on her family by a witch, resulting in madness. Together, can they break the curse to find their HEA? Or will all be lost to a curse placed by a witch? Awesome, just awesome!

The Mad Countess by Erica Monroe This is the story of Lady Claire Deering and Theodore Lockwood, the Earl of Ashbrooke. Claire has loved Theodore a very long time, but she is determined to have nothing to do with him because of a family curse made by an angry witch. Theodore has loved Claire since childhood. He tags along with friends to a reading of a will at a haunted castle with the hope of conquering his fear of rejection and make Claire his own, but there are obstacles in the way. Claire does not want to subject Theodore to her family curse, and Theodore needs to conquer his feet of rejection. Can they both conquer their fears? Is the curse real and if so, can it be broken? I loved this story. Though a short read it was packed with emotion and a touch of magic. Great read!
Possessed by The Baron by Jerrica Knight-Catania This is the story of Lady Samantha Priske and Mr. Chadwick Kendall. Chad's father is saying and orders his son to attend the reading of a will in his father's stead. When Sam and Chad meet there is immediate attraction, but Chad holds no title and would never be accepted by Sam's parents. When the ghost of Chad's mother appears to him to tell him to go home to his father Chad immediately leaves the castle to be with his father in his last moments, leaving Sam behind. Will Sam and Chad find their HEA? Read this sweet and magical story to find out. Another great read!
The Sweetest Curse by Renee Bernard This is the story of Althea Fairfax and Blade Humbly, the next Earl of Banfield. Althea is the daughter of the local town physician, but she is also a member of the local coven and a healer. Althea and Blade meet when Blade collapses in the street from an illness. Althea heals him and also falls in love with him, but he is titled and she is a commoner and also a witch. Blade believes only in science, and Althea is the polar opposite. Can these two people come together even if their beliefs and stations are very different? Another great story to enthrall you. Another great read!
I have only read the first story and plan to read the other two soon.
Claire and Teddy have been friends since childhood. They have feeling for each other but neither have expressed those feelings. Claire believes herself to be cursed to go mad like her aunt and mother. She could never burden Teddy like that. He doesn't think she is cursed and is out to prove it to her. This is a great novella and worth a read.

The Sweetest Curse: Elethea is the daughter of the village doctor. She is also a healer and a lot of the villagers prefer the old ways of healing to her father's more modern medicine. As she is approaching the local inn, a man steps out of his carriage and falls into the mud. He is very sick and Elethea's father is busy elsewhere, so she has to help the man. Blade is never sick, until now. He has a fever that is burning through him and there is an angel there to heal him. At least he thinks she is an angel. Elethea's father doesn't want anyone to know that she is the one who healed Blade. What would people think? She falls in love with this man in one night and her father forbids her to see him again. Will fate intervene? Possessed by the Stranger: Chad's beloved father is dying and he orders Chad to go to Castle Keyvnor to hear the reading of the will. Chad does not want to leave his father because he will probably die before he can return. Once he is at the castle, he runs into Lady Samantha. He is instantly intrigued by her and can't seem to stay away. Samantha sees him from a distance and knows there is a connection. Her parents would never approve of this man because he doesn't have a title. She will marry him with or without a title. How to get around her parents? The Mad Countess: Teddy has loved Claire since they were children. Claire knows the curse on her family will take over if she marries and has children, so she vows to stay single. She is so tempted by Teddy, but she can't give in and put him through what her father went through with her mother. There are some witches in the village that believe they can help her lift the curse. Can Claire hope that it is true? Teddy is so practical and needs to believe, will he truly believe so the curse can be lifted and they can be together?
This is one of four books about Castle Keyvnor. Each book contains three romantic stories set against the spooky background of the Castle. The stories are slightly intertwined, yet each can be read as a stand-alone story.
Erica Monroe's The Mad Countess Lady Claire has lived with the fear that she will go mad like her mother. It makes it hard to tell the man you love that you want to be more than friends. Teddy Lockwood, Earl of Ashbrooke, preferred books and research above all else. Instead of being a barrister as was his plan as the "spare heir", he found himself as the earl upon his brother's death. When it comes to light that Claire's family is cursed, rather than mad, they work together to find a solution. But when witches are involved, what will happen?
Jerrica Knight-Catania's Possessed by the Stranger Chadwick Kendall finds himself at the castle in his father's place. Chad doesn't want to leave him because he is dying, but he cannot refuse his father's wishes. Lady Samantha Priske is attracted to Chad, but knows her parents would never approve of the marriage. The two of them can't stay away from each other, but a ghostly sighting causes Chad to hurry back home. How can the two of them find their HEA?
Renee Bernard’s The Sweetest Curse Miss Elethea Fairfax is the daughter of the local doctor with witch blood in her. Blade Hambly, heir to the new Earl of Hambly, is more interested in science and his machines than the fact he will be an earl someday. As he falls sick in town, Elethea is the angel who heals him. However, her father won't allow people to know that it was his daughter and magic that provided the cure. What will happen? Will Blade be able to accept there is magic in the woman he loves?

Erica Monroe: The Mad Countess Erica Monroe's novella The Mad Countess, part of the Mystified compilation, showcases big talent in a short space! Lady Claire Deering lives in fear of the day she will succumb to the madness that has destroyed her family as a result of a witch's curse. When a death brings her family and friends together at the supposedly haunted Castle Keyvnor for the will reading odd occurrences reinforce her concern that madness is her inheritance. The newly minted Earl of Ashbrooke, Teddy Lockwood, is as practical as anyone can be except for his lifelong love of Lady Deering. Ever the skeptic his desire to make this resigned spinster his for life requires that he consider evidence outside of the concrete facts he regularly finds in books. Wonderfully descriptive the details incorporated by Ms. Monroe into her work were not only bountiful but interesting. This author conveys emotions at a basic level so convincingly it is hard not to know where the characters feelings end and your feelings begin. The evolution of love between lifelong friends from the innocence of childhood to the passion of adulthood was beautifully portrayed by Ms. Monroe. The Mad Countess is the kind of work that will leave readers wanting to hug each and every one of its words close as not one of them is without merit and sincere sentiment! *I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.*
These 3 novellas are part of a series of 4 books containing 12 novellas that have related characters, who are all attending the reading of a will at the estate of the deceased Earl of Banfield. Each novella can be read as a standalone story. Renee Bernard’s The Sweetest Curse: Blade Hambly believes in logic and science. Miss Elethea Fairfax heals with the touch of her hands, talks to the air and radiates magic. How can he fall in love with a witch? This was a very entertaining, well-written, clever story. Jerrica Knight-Catania's Possessed by the Stranger: Lady Samantha Priske just wants to be left alone to explore the haunted estate. Chadwick Kendall has been forced to come to the estate for the reading of the will, but wants to leave as quickly as possible because his father is dying. When these two meet, the unexpected love they find changes everything they thought they knew. This was a charming, sweet story. Erica Monroe's The Mad Countess: Theodore Lockwood, Earl of Ashbrooke, has been in love with his best friend, Lady Claire Deering, for as long as he can remember. A witch has cursed her family with madness and she is terrified to involve him in that. Maybe if they work together they can break the curse and find true love together... This was a fun, romantic story. Copy gifted by the Publisher in exchange for an honest review.
For this 3 sets of stories we start out with Claire and Teddy. Teddy and Claire have loved each other for as long as they can remember but have yet to tell each other. Claire has lived with the fear that she will suffer the same curse her mother and aunt did of going mad. We meet the witches in this story and see how Claire and Teddy's dreams are made! Next Sam and Chad meet at the family gathering and fall in love. Sam's family has her destiny already decided when she takes matters into her own hands. Chad is immediately smitten with Sam and wants her for his wife, but he's had to attend the reading of the will with his loving father at home on his death bed from cancer. Their story wraps up with Sam standing on her own and Chads dream of her meeting his father before he dies. The last story in the book is about Blade and Elethea. She's a witch and he's a man of science. Blade becomes sick on the way to the gathering and Elethea treats him as her father is the country physician. With her grandmother being the head of the coven that is responsible of stopping the curse, a father that's set on keeping his daughter under control, and a witch who's in love with a man of science, everyone has to be on their toes!

Sexy and magical Three delightful love stories with a touch of magic! Opposites attract with a scientist who falls in love with a healing witch who saves his life. Serious Chad who would rather be with his dying father falls in love with Samantha who really isn't interested in marriage if it's like her parent's. And finally a pair of sweet delightful friends who want so much more, but are afraid for various reasons to take the next step, but magic happens when they leap across that barrier and find true love really conquers all.
I like the 1st books better. These set of three had seemed more series and more black magic vs fun ghost or "good" magic Renee Bernard’s The Sweetest Curse H: Blade Hambly- believes in science and logic h: Elethea Fairfax- heals with the touch of her hands
Jerrica Knight-Catania's Possessed by the Stranger H: Chadwick Kendall h:Lady Samantha Priske
Erica Monroe's The Mad Countess H: Theodore Lockwood, Earl of Ashbrooke, h: Erica Monroe's The Mad Countess
An enjoyable read with many interconnecting stories from 4 books and a number of various authors. Well worth reading all books in series (Spellbound, Vexed, Mystified, Bedeviled)
A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
The best thing I think about the 4 books and all the stories is how the intermingle and flow along side each other. I have read other series where I was thinking about what happened to so and so. And the books gives us that. Loved it!
I received this book in exchange for a HONEST review.
