I read the whole 4 book series in order & highly recommend it. I will say that books 1 & 2, while very good, did irritate me enough that I took off stars (1 from book 1 & 2 from book 2). When I read a novel, I expect a distinct beginning, middle, & ending & I felt both of those books just stopped at an end of a chapter with no real ending - esp. book 2. However, the writing is excellent & if one reads them straight through like I did, that shortcoming will matter less.
I was able to read each book in a day or less so the truth is it would have been better to have consolidated them into one or two books. However if this way gets a self-published author more money, I can forgive that.
I won't say a whole lot about the details of this or the other books except to say I learned a lot of info on what being a a paramedic is probably like. In the beginning it was not something I was yearning to learn, but in hindsight it was one of the things that made this book & the series so interesting. I look forward to any future books Jamie Davis writes. Great job.
I do read over 300+ books per year & I will say that this "Extreme Medical Services" series is one of the best, if not the best, I've read in a while. So highly recommended. Two thumbs way up from me.
No, I don't know this author & I did pay good money for these books. I was not given the books for free to provide this review. I just loved the series & for once took the time to post a review. Sadly, that's something I don't do as often as I should. I usually just want to get on to the next book waiting. Probably pretty typical. My BAD!
This was another fast paced, page turner of a read that I loved every second of.
This is really the beginning of a new story arc, albeit, one that is tied to the arc that the previous three books tell. Dean and company may have stopped The Cause, but it looks as though Dean's problems are far from over. This time round we have some new characters that I think will add some new elements and dimension to this series.
Jaz Errington is a Demon hunter, independent and strong willed. I like her a lot, and can't wait to see how her character develops. I can see the relationship between her and Dean having a lot more fireworks, than the relationship with Ashley. It's going to be interesting to see the chemistry between the two go and to see them deal with the link that they both share. Jo is another new character. I can't really say much about her without giving away spoilers. But I will say that she is a quirky one and plays off Dean and Jaz really well. Also making an appearance was Ashley's Valkyrie sister Ingrid. She seems like a lot of fun and is a near complete opposite to Ashley. I think she will add some humour into the mix as well as create carnage; so that's going to be fun.
This book had loads more action and a bit of a different vibe than previous books, in my opinion, which really grabbed me and drew me in. On top of this is was revealed that there may be more to Dean than meets the eye, so I'm looking forward to see how that element of the story line plays out.
This is totally worth reading, and dare I say, it has possibly been one of my favourites in the series so far.
Book 4 in this series and boy what a book. My absolute favourite so far. It was a journey with plenty of action, plenty of twists and a whole load of emotions.
Watching Dean grow and figure out things and the introduction of Jaz and Jo made this the perfect story that took the series to the next level. I can not wait to pick up the next one in the series! lets see how this all unfolds.......
The 'Extreme Medical Services' aspect of this series takes a huge step back in this novel. In a series entitled 'Extreme Medical Services', that is an obvious problem.
I am going to hold up my hand in saying that a lot of my reasons for disliking this book are subjective on this one. As an overall story, it flows well enough to keep the pages turning and it was never boring, but there was a lot about this story that just rubbed me the wrong way.
1 - The first and biggest issue for me was Jaz Errington. This new hunter with a chip on her shoulder about anything male, anything supernatural, or anything not Jaz Errington was a serious drag on the story. She seemed to exist in this story to be an antagonist for the protagonist. Every interaction with him included her either ridiculing him or trying to start a fight. She was basically a bully with her only redeeming feature being hyper competence, but that's hardly enough to make an interesting character.
2 - This next issue is also about Jaz,
3 - Time travel. I hate it and I always will. This is purely subjective, I get it, but it never works, creates paradoxes, and ruins any story it touches. Enough said, moving on.
4 - I really felt the absence of the side characters that Mr Davis has been building over the course of 3 novels. I understand the reasons to introduce new characters, but we spend most of our time in this novel with Dean, Jaz and Joanna, while all of the other characters who were a big part of this series have all taken cameo roles. It made the book feel really out of place.
5- The last point of this review (for the sake of brevity rather than other frustrations I have) is the fact that the series premise is all but gone now. The Medical services angle is barely in this novel and it's becoming more generic because of it. It's a shame because the premise had so much potential.
Overall this was an okay read, just not what I wanted. I do think there were some objective mistakes that make this a lesser novel in the series, but I will admit that at least 2 of the stars lost in this review were because I just plain didn't like a large majority of choices and paths this novel has taken.
This book was amazing! Every chapter left me wanting more! It felt like I was watching an epic action movie! I am hooked on this series! I love the fact that I get to enjoy this series with the person I love the most.
In a way I am a bit torn regarding this book. I simply love a medical case oriented urban fantasy and it is quite refreshing to read a series starring a paramedic who is barely coming to grips with attending to supernatural patients.
On one hand, I really enjoyed this story, and the read was very easygoing and fun to read. I also liked the friendship that starts to grow between Dean, the feisty Jaz and their uhh... daughter hunter/witch/paramedic Joanna who was brought 20 years from the future to help them rescue the kidnapped angel Ashley and Dean's main love interest from a group of demons.
And in many ways, I liked this book a whole lot more than the 3rd novel as it takes the story in a different direction. I like Jaz more than Ashley as Dean's girlfriend, and this story lets us meet other new characters. On the other hand, Dean acts like a machist prick a good deal of the book underestimating Jaz's combatant abilities. Ingrid was a fun addition in the story even though she doesn't appear much. I would not like to spoil much about the story, but the "ordinary guy who in reality is the chosen one trope" just didn't ring well with me. I kind of liked things more when Dean was just an ordinary guy dating interesting people and learning from his experienced former coworker Brynne, so when I hear news he is the chosen one (of what kind I will probably have to read the next book), I did frown from the revelation.
All in all, the series is taking a welll trodden direction but I sooo want to continue reading to know where it heads. 3 1/2 stars!
The beauty of Jamie’s books, well ONE of the beauties, I should say, is that you can drop in, almost anywhere in the series and still be able to enjoy the book in hand. So if you’re new to this series, let me hasten to say that while Dean, our hero, has absolutely nothing in common with Mary Poppins, Davis’ writing certainly DOES. Hence the headline, because this book really is practically perfect.
Our characters continue to evolve, the mysteries deepen even as we learn more, new blood comes in to replace those who step out and, of course, the sarcasm and wit is abundant, despite only showing up when most appropriate. And then there are the surprises…. Which of course I can’t say anything about without ruining it which is not my goal, today. I should also mention that this is my 3rd read through this book, and I’m ashamed that I haven’t written a review before this. But, as with the 2nd read, a new volume in the series has just come out and I really wanted a refresher on all things Elk City. I’m also pleased to tell you that it has been JUST as enjoyable this tune as it was the first two. So get on board. It’s a great ride you are sure to ENJOY!
Jamie Davis’ The Paramedic's Hunter (Extreme Medical Services Book 4) is a worthy continuation of this wonderful series and easily worth five stars. I love the whole concept of a paramedic who takes care of hidden supernatural creatures in his city is wonderfully original. Adding in Demon hunter Jaz Errington (who seemingly kills the patients lead character Dean Flynn heals) is a neat twist. Making them work together on a quest to rescue a kidnapped angel, who also happens to be Dean's missing girlfriend? Perfect. Yet another book that provides just what I want, is well written, with excellent world building and a great plot full of magic and adventure. The lead, Dean Flynn, is simply superb, as are the rest of the cast of supporting characters. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, with the caveat that while you could read this standalone you’re much better starting off from book 1 of the series.
Bottom line: this book is easy to highly recommend.
action packed urban fantasy paranormal mystery series
This is an action pack urban fantasy paranormal mystery series. Great cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Dean is a paramedic in his town. He is assigned to EMS you station which is emergency medical services unusual. He deals with unusual people meaning paranormal/supernatural. Him and his coworkers go out into the city and deal with any injuries or illnesses of those paranormal living in and around the city. Only a few people know about the paranormal limit among us and living normal lives. Dean and his friends have already fought battles against an ancient vampire trying to destroy things and take over control of the city. Now they’re fighting against another evil. Demons from the lower realms are attacking people in the city and Dean’s girlfriend Ashley a healing angel has disappeared. Dina is worried and cannot find her and eventually is on a quest to find her and save her if possible. Read on and see were Dean and the adventure goes. Lots of twist and turns lots of action bit of magic And just entertainment. Check it out
This is a good book, the story was well developed and I love Joanna who gives a new element to the plot. Suddenly Dean discovers he has a daughter and girlfriend/wife and this is an unexpected development which gives some idea of what could be happening in the future. The writing could be tighter but the primary goal of every writer has been met - as a reader I wanted to see what happened next and have bought the next 2 books in the series to find out. This series is good and I recommend it for anyone who wants to read a good paranormal adventure.
STICK with iT. The SERIEs starts a little slow ..the author loves medical lingo which I love but others may take a bit to get into. Im not going to lie by the end of the First book I was on the fence about continuing the series. I started BOOK 2 of the Series ..first half started still very slow but by the end of 2nd Book the storyline started getting good..the books just got better and better as the series add another book. I will give the Whole SERIEs a solid 3.9🌟. 😍.
I loved the new characters brought in and the twisted changes in the series. I am struggling slightly with the reduced medical elements of the series. However I am really enjoying the changes as well as the newer dynamic as well as different focus on the supernatural community. Ashley is such an amazing character but Jaz seems to have a very different viewpoint and really allows the changes to flow through. I am interested to seeing where these changes and hidden sides grow.
Dean is attempting to find his girlfriend Ashley who was kidnapped, but he has to maintain his work and he's pretty much on his own, until he meets a warrior. But as they find a way to locate Ashley, along with a young Wiccan, they discover some other truth that affects all three of them.
With the Supernatural humans hiding, or protecting their own from the demons around town, Dean and his two companions go on the hunt for a missing Eldara.
Let me tell you though that last bit of information in the story was a shocker and makes you start to wonder who is this Dean Flynn, Paramedic?
The stories are getting more and more interesting. The dialog has improved a little or I'm just getting used to it. There were a couple of continuity problems in this one. The glaring one is the fact that Dean's new partner is a male. In an earlier book, Brynne made a point of saying there was always a women on the team to prevent a Siren from being able to overcame the men. There were a couple of other places where names got confused which is an editing problem. Overall still enjoyable.
Continuing the story of Dean, paramedic to unusual, this time he must join forces with a hunter and witch to save Ashley. Dean is targeted by demons who are trying to kill him to prevent him from finding Ashley and preventing a permanent portal being opened into our world. There is a surprising twist in the this story that will intrigue you. Really good story and fun to read. Ready to move on to the next chapter in this series.
A according to visions Dean needs two partners to save Ashley. In meeting them he comes face to face with a two part future, and a heart break. As he meets the Hunter and the witch he needs. This rocky partnership almost fails before it even gets started. Follow and find out what life changing events Dean faces in his attempt to rescue Ashley.
Dean's Unusual patients keep him and the other paramedics busy. But they aren't the only things that are unusual. Ashley is missing and he is trying to train a new probie. Fortunately, this guy is already a trained paramedic. He's now getting used to the special patients of Station U. The search for Ashley will be far from easy and bring new people into his life.
Come and join Dean the paramedic as he learns that the Angel Ashley has disappeared and he now must make a team with him, the hunter and a witch to find who has taken her and get her back. So we know that he and Jaz will be two thirds of the party but who will they meet to be their witch partner. To learn the answer to that and to read about their epic rescue battles I recommend you get this book ASAP and get to reading, you’ll be glad you did
I'm enjoying the Extreme Medical Services series. I find them to be well written and well edited. There has been a somewhere predictable storyline but it's been done in ways that were very surprising. I like the way the healers don't choose and the way the "good guys" do everything they can to avoid hurting the "bad guys".
I would recommend this mostly clean series and am looking forward to the rest of the books!
The author is very good at story telling. The issue I have with this series is that he portrays all witches as Wiccans. I can see having witches as a race of supernaturals, however not all witches are Wiccan. Wicca is a religion SOME witches follow. I think that the author could have done more research in that respect. Overall the book was enjoyable and I'm excited to read the next one.
Emt,hunter,and (future)witch in a battle against evil
A EMT(considering writer Davis is one),the last surviving member of a hunting clan, and their future 15 year old daughter whos a witch must battle demons holding a angel in a attempt to open a portal to earth.love the use of the actual names and medical techniques that writer Davis brings to this.
Dean's story continues on. In this book, while trying to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend, Dean meets his 15 year old daughter Joanna, who's a witch from the future. That part was a bit weird, but also acceptable. I also disliked the demon hunter Jaz Errington. Don't know why, but she rubbed me the wrong way.
I never really thought about angels and valkyries being related. This premise creates more questions - how do Eldara and valkyries come into being; how is it possible for them to be twins; how do they determine their callings? It is a good thing that Ingrid and Ashley are so close, but what a shock to Dean to find out they are identical twins! Ooops!
Another good story. Still like the characters and the setting/story. Have always liked urban fantasy and this comes from a different view than I have read before, I rather like the Paramedic/medical angle. I did not see the latest twist coming but once it was hinted at... Definitely want to see how things play out.
I have found when reading a series that there is usually one or even two books that are not quite the caliber of the rest. This was book four and so far all have been great. No disappointment so far on the quality of the story. I do hope to see more Gibbie! Book five awaits!
A blend of mythical characters with laughter and good fight scenes. EMS for "unusuals" and generations of humans designed to hunt. Shifters, witches, time travel, angels. It is all here and somehow believable in the tale of The Paramedic's Hunter.
Love how the author incorporates real life medical experiences into his fantasy world, it makes the stories come to life even more. Really like the fact that there is a medically trained team for the Unusuals working alongside humans. Really enjoyed this and didn't want to stop reading.
Love this series! Can't wait to read the next book. Will Dean find himself as more then human? And what of Jaz and Joanne, will they reconcile their relationship? Read the books and find out.
