At the end of a secluded gravel lane named Tangled Trail, sit two large, Victorian-styles houses. What were once vibrant and colorful homes, now sit in a state of slow decay. Young Hadlee Monroe has just received her high-school diploma. Hadlee suffers from anxiety issues, and has lived on Tangled Trail for most of her life. Her elderly neighbor, Miss Anna DuVall, tells Hadlee the stories of a lifetime spent on Tangled Trail, recounting the happier times and hinting that not everything may be as it appears. Hadlee begins to experience spine-chilling events that she cannot explain. She doesn’t believe in ghosts, but nothing else can account for the strange occurrences that now taunt her. As life begins to spiral toward chaos, Hadlee must determine if the mysterious incidents are simply in her mind, or if something threatening lurks at the end of Tangled Trail. After a series of eerie events, Hadlee connects with Mary O’Reilly, who discovers that there are a lot of secrets among those living… and those long dead...who reside on Tangled Trail.

I have to admit that I saw Mary O'Reilly in the title and bought this book without realizing it was not written by Terri Reid. However, despite that, I did enjoy the story. Hadlee is a teenager, just graduating high school after being homeschooled due to an anxiety issue. Life has been isolated but she has survived until an apparent ghost comes to shatter her world. Will a guest appearance by Mary solve her problems? There were a number of unexpected twists in this novella and overall a satisfying read.
This book come with some expectations: we are probably reading it because we love the character Mary O'Reilly. So you may have some impatience with the first 40% or so of the book, which is the character development of 4 new characters. This is necessary to support a more complex plot than I expected, which is very well crafted. The author catches the voice of the original novels very well. I can't really find anything to criticize, which is my criteria for 5 stars.
Very interesting way to tell a ghost story. While it may be slightly predictable it's a very good ghost story and you really connect with all the characters. Loved it.
