Defiant, by Sabrina York
Book 4 in the steamy Regency Noble Passions Series

When rakish Ned falls in with the wrong crowd, his brother decides to send him to the Continent for "seasoning". For Sophia, this just won't do. She's loved Ned for ages--and also longed for adventure. She runs away from her boring suitors and disguises herself as a cabin boy on the Defiant, the ship sailing Ned to Italy.

Ned knows he's not good enough for Sophia, but once they're on the Defiant, he can't stop himself from touching her, tasting her, loving her. Not when a wild tempest and a band of ruthless pirates threaten them. Not when every look from her gives him such pleasure. And certainly not when she comes, warm and wild and willing, to his bed.

If they survive their voyage, Sophia's brother might kill him, but it will have been worth every moment and every hot, sweet kiss.

Another visit with the Moncrieff and the McCloud, two names that strike fear and awe in the hearts of men, and encourage nothing but recalcitrance, eyerolls and outright defiance from their women. I adore this series for the spirited, brave and smart heroines who drive their male relations and lovers to distraction with their single-minded determination and refusal to cower under the threat of societal censure.

Those who have read the series will know of the rather unusual connections between the families, and the loyalties, humor and true passions that define them. In this story, Sophia the younger sister of Ewan has managed to survive three seasons in London without accepting a single proposal of marriage to the twenty seven men who have offered for her hand. Ewan, his heart in the right place, wants to continue to protect and guide his sister into a life free from care or worry, unlike their younger years. Sophia, however, is not interested in any of those men: she wants Ned. And adventures: constantly battling the ‘no cakes’, ‘no adventure’, no FUN restrictions on young women of her station, Sophia is constantly looking for distraction.

Ned, for his part is mired in his own feelings of uselessness and not being ‘enough’ to offer for Sophia. He has managed his desires for her by being the most unpleasant and disagreeable man he can to her: just testing the edges of politeness when they come in contact. When yet another night out results in his purchasing a horse and losing at cards, all debts that will be paid by his brother the Earl of Moncrieff, it is decided that Ned will be sent away to Italy to learn some responsibility, and curtail his friendships with disagreeable young rakes of London.

From here, the story takes Ned and Sophia on adventures galore: rough seas, a disabled ship, pirates, an attempt to escape foiled at the last minute and then a stand-off with the pirate captain, the returning Sophia is bold, determined and ever so angry when Ned, reacting from his instinct to protect, jumps in front of the gun and takes a bullet meant to kill his brother.

If you are looking for a ‘traditional’ Regency with simpering heroines, rakes who care only about themselves and a strict adherence to the expectations of society – you need to look elsewhere. The men have worked diligently to assure their place in society, and play with their well-deserved reputations to assure acceptance, cache and an element of “don’t mess with us” that is prominent in every drawing room in London. The women are smart, determined, loyal and as honest as they need to be in their pursuit of their own desires. Sophia is no wilting flower, her early years had her well aware of the goings-on between men and women, and her self-confidence and curiosity combined with her good-nature and enjoyment of all things “adventurous’ have her leading Ned by the nose, or other projecting parts, to her ultimate goal.

Fun, funny and oh so steamy, Sophia is possibly my favorite heroine of this series, and I adore her ability to remain utterly non-plussed in the face of her brother’s overwhelming temper…

Until a scratch came at the door. And then a knock. And then a rattling pound. It was unnecessary for Ewan to break it down as he did.

“Yes, Ned,” she said. “I enjoyed it very much. It had been a grand adventures. She never wanted another adventure again.

This book was a grand adventure, but I cannot wait for the next from this author!

I purchased an eBook copy of this title for my own library. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

In my humble opinion, this is the best one yet! I have been following this series since the first one, Folly. I have loved every one and this one tops them all. But do not fear dear reader, if you have not been following this series. The author provides enough background that this can be read as a stand-alone. If you have never read Sabrina York, and like historical novels, this would be a great place to become acquainted with her work. You won’t be disappointed.

I love what Ms York did with her characters in this. We have our hero Ned, who is your basic second son of the era – living off of his older brother, pretty much good for nothing, spending money he doesn’t have, partying with his cronies, kind of following in his older brother’s (The Dark Duke) shoes. He seems likable enough, but has no direction other than to have fun. His brother has decided Ned needs seasoning so is sending him to the continent for a Grand Tour.

Then there is the heroine, Sophia. Little sister to The McCloud. (Brigand) Now if you believe her brother, she is your basic society debutante groomed to marry well. In fact the story opens with them arguing about whether or not she is going to marry a prince. Sophia wants love and passion like what she sees her brother and his wife have, not just some well titled nabob from who knows where that she hardly knows, let alone likes. AND she wants some adventure. When her brother insists that she marry a man of his choosing, Sophia decides it is time to find some adventure.

What was so very fun about this book was who, exactly, seduced whom in this rollercoaster of a romp. It wasn’t the rake in the making. “But he was a strong man. And he was an honorable man. And he was a stubborn man. And her brother was very large. So Ned banished his lust. Wiped it completely from his mind, focusing on a horse he’d seen at Tattersall’s and the price of tea in India and the lineage of the English kings.” Oh no. It was the very curious, and not so innocent Sophia. “Sophia grinned down at Ned, taking in the ecstasy on his beautiful face, the shudders and the cries as she pleasured him. She pleasured him.” This role reversal was unexpected and ingenuous! It made me grin and cheer. And the author did it so well that it really worked – even in this historical novel where young women of society were not supposed to know such things let alone do them.

That is just the romance part of the book. This story also has hurricanes at sea, pirate attacks, interfering family, and scandal. This book grabbed me and held me hostage until the very last page. I mean, who needs sleep anyway? I could not put it down and I did try. But, it called to me to finish and would not let me sleep. It was that good. I adored these characters and loved every sentence of this very well written, amazing story. Another hit for Sabrina York!

Sabrina York has done it again and she has done it in a huge way. Defiant is the 5th book of the Noble Passions series and in contention for my favorite. Just the fact that she has made me love regency historical is a feat in itself and she has done that and then some.

Ned has sowed his wild oats to the point that his family can't take it anymore. Rather than watch him to continue down his wild path his brother, the Duke, is sending him to the Continent for "seasoning". Ned can't imagine anything worse than being sent away. But, then again, he has lived worse. He and his family were penniless and homeless until Edward took them in. That alone is the reason that he can't have the only woman he has ever loved.

Sophia's brother Ewan has sacrificed his whole life, so that when she reached the age to marry she could have her pick of anyone she wanted. The problem is she doesn't want the royal, high society, dandy men that Ewan insists on presenting to her. She has only ever wanted one man, but that man can barely stand to be in the same room with her. Which really stinks considering his sister is married to her brother and they are often together.

I loved Ned so much and here I thought I couldn't love anyone more than Ewan. It took approximately 2 chapters for my heart to hurt for him. He didn't have the strength and "don't screw with me" attitude that Ewan had, so when pitted against him poor Ned didn't stand a chance. Watching his growth and journey to finding the man that he is was what made me love him the most. Sophia was such a fun, strong female character. She was so much like her brother, but born into a society that doesn't admire strength and independence in their women. I can't imagine how smothered she had to feel. The love that this couple shared was enlightening and painful, but genuine and hopeful. I am so thankful that I have discovered this amazing series by Sabrina York!

Defiant is the first historical story I have had the chance to read by Sabrina York. I must say this talented lady can write historical romance with steam just as well as she write contemporary. I so hope I am able to get a chance to read the rest of this series because I have a feeling they are AWESOME.

I positively adored Sophia. She has a quirky humor, a sassy side, and oh my is that girl full of curiosity. When she sets out to get what she wants she pretty darn good at doing what ever it takes to get. She is also creative, brave, and knows when to poor on the charm. She is quite a lady and I really enjoyed meeting her.

Ned is the bad boy that is being punished for hanging with the wrong crowd. He loves Sophia so but her brother thinks he is not any where near good enough for her. I really liked Ned, under his bad boy persona he really is a sweet, good hearted gentleman that will do what ever has to be done to have his lady love.

This is some story, really, I could not put this book down! Sabrina York is one talented author that I always enjoy reading. In this story she has plenty of drama, a lot of suspense, some danger, a little humor, and oh boy those steamy scenes that sure have a way of warming things up a bit.

There are so many things that happen in this story, I was completely captivated and I could not wait to see what twist Ms. York was going to throw in the story next. Wow this was a wild ride at sea but a lovely read.

I so hope that I have the opportunity to read the first books in this series. I am sure they are just as awesome as Defiant. You don't have to worry if you are like me though and have not read the previous books, this book can easily be read as a stand alone.

I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Defiant.

As always, this was amazing!

And to switch things up, all sorts of new adventures for Ned and Sophia! As our cast of characters continue to grow, the devious exploits just get better and better!

The nice twist on this one is that our hero isn't any titled man, he hasn't even got any money for his own. He is the relation of our famous Dark Duke and is at his mercy for his funding

Sophia has never cared about that, she and Ewan grew up on the streets when she was young, and it was only through his dubious efforts that they had any money

Ned has to show himself, not just to her and his brother, but to his own pride before he will claim her, trouble is, she has her mind and his plans may not be what she makes happen!

I Loved This Book!

I used to read Harlequin romance when I was much younger. This book reminds me of a Harlequin on steroids! Romantic, sexy, and the anticipation, it's all about the anticipation. It makes it so much better when you finally get there. Sophia has loved Ned for years. But Sophia's brother wants her to marry a duke, or a prince, or someone filthy rich. Ned is none of those things, but Ned is who she wants. When Ned is sent off to Italy, Sophia decides to run away. Oh the trouble Sophia gets herself into. She wanted adventure, and that is what she gets. I loved, loved, loved this book!

Her Royal Hotness, proves once more how schorching hot, historical romance can be!
We get to read Ned's and Sophia's story, which evolves around social norms and our heroes' faux pas.
Sophia desperately wants an adventure. And Ned. And she will stop at nothing to get what she wants.
Ned tries to stay away from Sophia, even if he doesn't want to, but cannot succeed, mostly because of her plans!
I loved the whole book with its adventurous, yet romantic (and sometimes erotic) plot.

Defiant is the fourth book in the Noble Passions series. It’s a predictable historical romance that feels immature and petulant mainly because of the bratty Heroine. Not my favourite.

Dark Fancy: 4 stars: James & Helena (I especially liked the story)
Dark Duke: 4+ stars: Edward & Kaitlin (I especially liked the flirty banter)
Brigand: 3+ stars: Ewan & Violet (I especially liked the secondary characters)
Defiant: 2 stars: Ned & Sophia

Sophia Fiona St. Andrews has a brother who is determined to see her marry well. Four years. Four Seasons. And twenty-seven proposals. Pish. Sophia has turned her nose up at all of them. Craving adventure, and chasing an infatuation, Sophia seems to always be running away from something, thieving her way out of something, or stalling to avoid something throughout the story. I didn’t particularly feel kindly about her brattish outlook on life. She was petulant, unthinking, and an annoying Heroine who should have still been in the schoolroom.

Ned Wyeth gets the raw end of the deal in this book, imo. He’s a boy forced to grow into a man but gets bullied by brother-in-law and brother incessantly, and has a spoiled brat for a love interest. Poor Ned deserved better.

Ned and Sophia are pushed from pillar to post in this calamity of romantic plot aboard a heaving ship, and surrounded by interfering and threatening male relatives. Even their intimate times are harried by Sophia being a nag. I felt sorry for Ned.

Ewan was in Ned’s face at every turn. Being a newlywed, Ewan should’ve been kept so busy by Violet that he didn’t have time to bother Ned.

I don’t recommend this book. This series is waning as it goes on.

This book was another very different book in the series. I feel as though this series is picking completely different settings for the romances and very different characters to keep readers interested and it's doing a great job.

The main characters are Ned and Sophia. Sophia is the younger sister of Ewan who we met in the last book. And Ned is the younger brother of Violet who we also met in the last book. Sophia and Ned have always had feelings for each other but Ned has been well and truely scared off by Ewan and Edward from book 2. But in this book the two get together against all the odds and the people against them.

There are some secondary characters but they either have or are going to have their own book in the series.

The storyline is vastly different to the other books in the series as their is a completely new setting and new challenges. The pacing is good and I look forward to reading the next book in the series which I think is the last.

A wonderful adventure for two!!

Loved the book of Ned and Sophia. Ned has been told for the past 2 years he is not good enough for Sophia St. Andrews. He
has loved her at first sight 4 years ago. Sophia only wants Ned and doesn't know why he doesn't like her anymore. When Ned gets into more trouble husband brother the Duke sends him to
Italy and a grand tour. Sophia knows he's going to be gone for
several years so she gets hired on as a cabin boy on the same
ship as Ned is on. You have adventure, intrigue, danger, passion,
love a few pirates ransom and so much more all wrapped up in
a delicious read!!

Somehow this book made me think that I judged the previous one too harshly. I have read worse books, and unfortunately I need to reserve 1⭐ for those, so this still gets 2⭐. 1.5/5
Even more boring, even more unrealistic resolutions abroad the ship, even worse relationship resolutions back on dry land. This tried to give me whiplash. They love, they don't, too fast, too boring, unexpected people knowing each other abroad ships, then too many new characters unexpectedly arriving, in general, a whole big mess there.

Book 4 in the Noble Passions series by Sabrina York was an entertaining read, but didn't have the darker element I enjoy in a historical romance. I think part of the problem was that I remembered Ned from his younger years and he never really grew up in my mind. Sophia seemed a bit like a spoiled brat to me which made her a less attractive heroine. I don't think this book compared to the previous books in the series.

I love Ned and Sophia's story. I especially liked how Sophia managed to get what she wanted from Ned. She knew what she wanted and went out to get it. I loved this book because it was fun to read, entertaining and has pirates! Not the sexiest of the series, imo, but my favourite nevertheless. This story seemed a little lighter, not too serious.

I found the first book in this series, Dark Fancy, on Negalley and received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. Having honestly loved it, I immediately bought the rest of the series. This book is the fourth installment and revolves around Ned and Sophia, the siblings of characters in earlier books. I can’t imagine it working well as a standalone novella, since every character in the book has had their own previous story. So, if you’re thinking of jumping in with this book, do yourself a favor and start at the beginning.

Much like with Brigand, this book spends a LOT of time on plot and at 180 pages is essentially an historical romance novella. I consider Dark Fancy and the Dark Duke to be more historical erotica. We have met Ned before, but we really get to know Ned and Sophia as they go along this book’s journey. But, I found each of them to be far less captivating and interesting than their siblings and, in fact, this book was difficult for me to finish, even with the short length. I found Ned to be a boy who is forced to grow into manhood, which he does fairly well. Sophia, however, continues to be the spoiled brat focused on her own wants and needs, to the exclusion of everything else, including what Ned wants. She is far too modern for the historical setting and I really wanted to smack her upside the head because she doesn’t learn from her mistakes and never has to face the consequences for her actions. In other words, we finally have a heroine who deserves to be tied up and spanked, yet, alas, it never happens.

As you can tell from the lower rating, this is my least favorite of the series. Mostly due to Sophia, but, partially because Ned is about as captivating as a limp dishcloth. The stars it does have are because I enjoyed seeing the previous characters again, I was interested in the Pirate, Marquee, and hope he shows up in a future book, and because as a novella, it was short. I didn’t have to endure Sophia for long.

Another must read book! Can't put this series of books down.

They are just getting better and better. This book puts Ned and Sophia together. You will remember that Ned is Violet's brother and Sophie is the little sister of Ewan.

Oh what fun and adventure s these two get into. First Ned is sent away aboard ship heading to Italy. Then. Sophia runs away and cuts her beautiful hair so she can play a cabin boy on board Ned's ship. Ned recognizes her and makes her stay in his room away from the other men aboard ship. But can he keep his hands off of her when he's dreamt of being with her for years.

Sabrina doesn't disappoint with this book. Lots of funny and lots of heat too. Make this one of those must read series for you. Ready for book 5.

Such a great tale

Again Sabrina York write a steamy tale that has adventure, love and humor. I truly enjoy this Noble Passion Series. The characters are so fun and entertaining. Ned and Sophia have been in love for years, but her brother thinks Ned is unworthy. Now with the help of Edward, his wife and Violet, he is determined to be worthy of Sophia. However, they have an unexpected adventure that leads to some romantic and steamy experience. Love Sophia, she is quite the spitfire. Over all a great book and series.

Wow

Lady you do know what to do with a mind, a pen and paper dang you can tell a story. Now for the last book in the saga Folly well I need to purchase it to let you know what I think, but I already know it will be even better. You know it's a good thing you have to find your next adventure to write about cause it give your readers a chance to explore other writer's work. My only warning to those who have not read your work is it can be additive. D.H. from New York City P.s. Wow and Wow again.

Lovely

This book took an unexpected turn with the heroine running away, but I still loved every minute. The plot twist had me on the edge of my seat to see what next would happen. Sophia and Ned have loved each other for years but have hidden their feelings, aboard a ship in the midst of a storm, will they finally succumb or will all be lost. This is a must read
