Flying from the wilds of Manhattan. Caught in the web of the Amazon. Robert returns to Guatemala to find horrors raping its jungles. He and his mentor Guillermo, freedom fighter and medicine man, go on the warpath against drug lords who’ve been ransacking villages, kidnapping young men and women. For the sex trade? Or for something worse? They soon learn that something from hell has moved into the sacred Mayan ruins at Kundal. As Robert plunges like an arrow into the heart of this darkness, he must also diagnose a mysterious coma in order to save his friend, and fight his fierce desire to return to New York and Sharon Reede, the love of his life.
After graduating from Harvard University, Alberto Hazan attended Stony Brook Medical School. He trained in emergency medicine at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, where he was chief resident. Since then, he has worked in clinics and hospitals all over the world, including Morocco, Nepal, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Haiti. As a former Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner, Dr. Hazan continues to raise awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault in both New York and Las Vegas, where he currently practices emergency medicine. He is the author of the preteen urban fantasy series "The League of Freaks" and the medical thriller "Dr. Vigilante."
This was a great adventure, short as it was. I'm not ready to go back to New York yet. I still wanna stay in Guatemala a while longer!
Needless to say, this was a great story. The action was compelling, and the plot was brilliant! This could have easily have been a longer novel -- another 300 pages added with more plot points and twists, action scenes, further character development, etc...
This next installment moves to Central America, and while definitely more focused on action than character compared to the first book, it still contains a hypnotic velocity that keeps pages turning.
After reading and enjoying Dr. Vigilante for the second time, imagine my surprise and delight to discover that there were two more books in the Dr. Vigilante series. I will be binge reading and reviewing them now. Although I had read some reviews that say that Dr. Vigilante wasn’t a medical/action/thriller and not worth the reader’s time and money, I disagree. In my humble opinion, with medical/action/thrillers, Alberto Hazan ranks right up there with Robin Cook, and no one can say that Cook isn’t one of the best of the best in the genre.
Dr. Vigilante II picks up where book 1 ends with Dr. Robert McKenzie having returned to his beloved Guadamala. As this story begins we find Robert’s old boss, Dr. Mel Weiss, searching for him in the jungles because his wife has once again fallen ill and the doctors in New York City can’t determine the cause of her illness. Jay feels that Robert is Francines only hope because he cured her once before when other doctors had failed. But when he finds him he becomes embroiled in a fight against drug and human traffickers who have taken over the jungles. It isn’t drugs or human trafficking that drives them, but something even more evil. In my review of Book 1, I said that Alberto Hazan reminded me of Robin Cook and the direction that this story takes is a Robin Cook plot twist. Like Robin Cook, Hazan is a doctor and his training and experience shows forth in these stories.
This is the second book in a three-book series and you need to read all three of them in the order in which they were written. Like book one, this one ends in a cliff hanger. Only at the very last scenes in this volume do the closing scenes in Book one start to come into focus., I bought all three volumes at the same time. Well… I bought Books two and three together after rereading book one and you should buy all three books at the same time too. I’m starting book three as soon as I post this review.
There are psychopaths in our world taking lives for money. Wether it babe for the slave trade, drugs, sex or organs, people are dying agonizing deaths everyday. This novel peels off a tiny corner of the blindfold society keeps hiding behind to make a statement and a point. Human nature is devolving into twisted, inhumane treatment and getting away with it. The only way to stop injustice is to fight each individual instance as it appears, no matter the cost. Dr Vigilante is ready, willing and able to prescribe the treatment and cure.
Loved Book I, dove into Book II and it did not disappoint me at all. I am not a serial book reader but this has changed my mind and I started Book III last night. These are full of non stop action and I would love to see this in a movie. I'm glad I didn't read this when it first came out. It's more fun to read them back to back. The momentum is high and the excitement and action is thrilling. I wouldn't have wanted the gap between books.
I enjoyed both this book and the prequel, however I really dislike endings, like both of these, designed simply to make you buy the next book In the series. I bought the third book for this reason, because of the cliffhanger ending. I’m losing my patience though, and hope the third in the series will end without another cliffhanger.
I forgot to review book I, now book II, both well written, intriguing story lines. Enjoyed every minute reading. And each kept me enthralled. Now on to book III! Been reading for seventy and more years. Have followed some very good authors. I think this author is the best. Thanks a million!
AH has the Doctor off to the wilds of South America deep not the jungles of the Amazon. The rumors are unbelievable but sound as if the ancient Mayan teachings and practices are being brought to the future. The Doctor jumps in with both feet to stop the old practices from becoming a part of the present and future. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Everything I liked about the first book, I disliked about this one. It seemed a bit contrived and sort of an an episode that could have been a flash back story. I was disappointed in this installment, and I hope the third one goes back to the roots of the character and story that I originally liked and that drew me into the world created by the author.
I loved this book. It has action, action, action. I was thoroughly entertained by the heroics Robert performed, particularly because they are mostly impossible but oh so exiting. Underneath all the excitement, the book serves to enlighten us to the horrors going on in the criminal world today.
A brilliant sequel to Dr Vigilante, even though there are times when you think the situations are somewhat unbelievable. Have to download the third book immediately!
I didn't enjoy this as much as the first one. It was too militaristic, but it leads to the next one, which I'm hoping will have more of the social worker in it and not be so military.
When I read the first & gave a review, I had no idea there was a 2nd...and just as spine tingling as the first. Hoping the third is waiting for me at Amazon.
Plenty of action but I could not get as involved in this protagonist in the jungles of Guatemala, though will read third in the series. Others might disagree.
I really enjoyed the first book even though Sharon was annoying as hell. so naturally I bought the second and rushed to preorder the third.
the second had just as much action as the first and we got to meet Guillermo and see a new side to Robert and mel. it was a brutal story to read buhh no less interesting.
but this author has a sick obsession with rape. *spoiler* it's not enough for Sharon to almost get raped in book 1, but she did get raped in book 2, and we'll likely read all the details in book 3? seriously?
this author writes males really well. he should stick to that and leave females alone. please.
Having read the first book in this series I downloaded this simply to find out what occurred after the epilogue in book 1! This was a little disappointing. The 'hero' seems to have developed almost superhuman abilities and at times I was hard pressed to visualise some of the scenes or suspend disbelief.
I don't know how believable the plot is, but I do have some doubts ;) Two stars for this book. It was okay but it lacked the 'believability' and the freshness of the first book.
Had read the first 1 and bought this thinking it wouldn't match the first n I so so enjoyed this I've pre ordered the 3rd. It went off on a totally harrowing storyline, bowing out some of the main characters from book 1 and bringing in new characters which I quite liked as well as marrying them together to give you a hunger for the 3rd book. I don't think I'll be disappointed. Will be looking for other books from this author. A must can't put down read
I have read many books of thrillers, but never like to this one. Outstanding Mr. Hazel, thank you for a wonderful and outstanding story. Robert is now my favorite character of all my books. I can hardly wait for the next book. If anyone loves to read like I do, you will not be disappointed. Enjoy!!!!
Another thrill ride that i had to read in one day.
Man I love this Author. From page one you are hooked and there's no stopping the roller coaster until you reach the end. Then with your next breath you think, man I hope there's another. Keep them coming. I can't wait!
Bond-like, with realism added by the medical details. Highly recommended series for fans of Daredevil. For an ER medic, Hazan has a grest way with jungle details and fight descriptions. Believable and engaging
