What would you do if someone left a dead body in the backseat of your car? Publicity-shy author Sunny Drysdale is forced to find out. After bumping into celebrity impersonator Boyd Bradford at a wedding reception the night before, and seeing him leave with rival author Darla Arnold, Sunny knows exactly who to blame for his appearance in her car. She’s suffered countless dirty tricks at Darla’s hands, and Sunny is determined this one will be the last. Her plan to return the body to Darla is thwarted, however, when she is flagged down, corpse still in car, by handsome police Chief Jeremy Jennings. How can you love someone if you can’t trust them? Jeremy is torn by his attraction to Sunny. If life has taught him anything, it’s that relationships are a trap. Worse still, he has two main suspects in Boyd Bradford’s disappearance, and Sunny Drysdale is one of them. With counterfeit bills popping up all over town and Boyd rumored to be a mob hit, Sunny is either in way over her head, or a beautiful, but devious criminal. His head says she’s only using their romance to distract him. His heart is determined not to care. Telling himself his interest in Sunny is only about solving his case; Jeremy loses himself to the passion simmering between them. Will these two ever be honest with one another, and give in to the desire tempting them both? Or is their romance doomed to a catastrophic end?
A born lover of soap operas, mystery and romance, bestselling author Clara Grace Walker is on a mission to bring glitz, glamour and continuing storylines to the world of romantic suspense. If you’ve longed for a Dynasty reboot also, her Glamorous, Dangerous Romance novels are just the thing to satisfy your craving. It’s okay. Your secrets are safe with Clara. Unless you’re a millionaire playboy with a reluctant love interest and a sinister nemesis, you probably won’t end up in the pages of her books.
Her unique blend of genre-blended fiction makes her a fresh voice in romantic suspense, and has resulted in multiple appearances on Amazon’s bestseller’s list. Clara started writing early and knew her true calling as an author by age 9. The second-born of five daughters, she made her world debut in an army hospital somewhere in Texas. Raised in Michigan, she was both a rebel and a lady, as at home playing dress-up as she was climbing trees. And always with her nose in a book. Convinced reading kept her daughter out of trouble; Clara’s mother encouraged her reading. Mostly her mother was right about that, but oh, the stories Clara was busy imagining.

WOW!! When I started this book, I thought I had a pretty good idea of how the story would unfold. I was WRONG!! Simply put, the author wove a tale that reeked with intrigue, drama, suspense, mystery, romance, and a healthy dose of humour. I was pleasantly surprised and hooked.
Sunny was a talented and successful historical crime writer. She was also shy, naive, sweet, beautiful, and a little bit broken. Jeremy was the Police Chief. He was smart, aggressive, gorgeous, good at his job, and very cynical (although he seemed to have a big heart, he was also a little bit broken). Ruby was Sunny's aunt (who raised her) and agent. She had her own plans for Sunny's career and nothing and no one was going to get in her way (not even Sunny). Darla was a wannabe successful crime writer who viewed Sunny as a rival. She was narcissistic, selfish, jealous, conniving, promiscuous, deceitful, manipulative, etc. She was willing to do any and every thing in her power to sabotage Sunny.
Thrown in an accidental death, a cover up, a George Clooney impersonator, counterfeit money, two crime families, Darla's perpetual revolving bedroom door, and the romance that was blossoming between Jeremy and Sunny and you've got yourself the recipe for a winner.
I was engrossed in the story from beginning to end. It was paced perfectly and therefore I suffered no dull moments. I only wish that there was more to the ending. It felt incomplete. Some characters didn't even have any resolution. I also would have loved a glimpse of the future that Jeremy and Sunny would hope to share. Maybe the author has plans for more and will continue the series.
I really enjoyed this book. Exploits follows author Sunny Drysdale as she balances writing, a budding romance, and a dead body found in the backseat of her car. The combination of mystery and romance made for a great read. The book was action-packed enough to keep me interested and entertained, but not to where it would keep me up all night (which is the perfect combination in my book). A great read for anyone who enjoys authors like Gemma Halliday or Janet Evanovich.
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.
I loved every second of Exploits! Clara is really amazing at creating these worlds/characters that you can just escape into and get tangled up in. I also really appreciated the humor in Exploits. I was laughing throughout at all the trouble that Sunny and her rival kept getting themselves into. Aunt Ruby was also one of my favorite characters and her antics kept me laughing too. There was a whirlwind of romance and suspense that keeps you turning the pages to see what is coming next!
I cannot officially give a review as I did not finish this book entirely. I read about 60% and stopped after that because I had no motivation to continue.
The story was slow. The character build up was weak and the flow of the plot was all over the place. I probably won't continue to read this book because it was dissatisfying.
Before I start my review, I would like to thank Independent Book Publisher’s Association (IBPA) and NetGalley for allowing me to review Exploits by Clara Grace Walker.

Now onto my review:
This book was a hot mess (and I mean it in a good way). I honestly didn’t know what to expect from one chapter to the next. Usually I can’t stand that in a book but this one, well, it worked.
I wasn’t too fond of Sunny’s character at first. She was too innocent and too much of a goody two shoes. So when the missing man turned up in the backseat of her car, what does she do…..she puts the body in a freezer. Seriously??? I put my Kindle down and said “Why???”. But I loved the name she came up for him, the Boydsicle. Everytime I saw it, I giggled a little bit.
Sunny also has some serious issues going on too. Her parents died right after telling her that they were disappointed in her and her aunt (who raised her) is extremely pushy. But the main one, was that she was hung up on a guy took her virginity at 17 and told her that she wasn’t good enough for him to have sex with again…..9 years later. I remember thinking to myself, “Girl, you need a therapist”.
Darla, the other female main character, was a biatch. She was the one who put the body in Sunny’s car, she keeps on leaking “information” about him being missing to a reporter named Lila and she is sleeping with every guy in the book except Leo and Jeremy. Oh and she hates Sunny. For some reason, she seems to think that Sunny is better than her and she tried to outdo her in everything. I actually liked her, believe it or not and her scenes in the book (especially the ones in the shoe store and the dress shop) were hilarious.
Jeremy was OK. I didn’t have a connect with him like I did with Sunny (later on in the book) and Darla. I did like his plan for getting info out of Sunny about Boyd’s whereabouts. He was going to sleep with her. Good police work, Chief (oh yeah, he’s a police chief).
There were serious sparks between him and Sunny but to begin a relationship off of lies is not good (on both of their ends). The sex scenes were fantastic!!
There are so many other character in this book that if I wrote about each of them, this blog would be long and boring, so I decided just to highlight the main three above. To be honest, this book read exactly like a soap opera. I was seriously expecting to see the words “Yesterday on Exploits” pop up in between chapters with a recap.
The ending was somewhat confusing but all the storylines (I think 4??) were brought together and resolved in a way that left me as a reader, satisfied.
How many stars will I give Exploits? 4
Why? A well written romance. There is a lot going on in the book, though, and keeping the characters straight and their relationships to other characters were confusing. Other than that, it was a great read.
