THE COYOTE WAY Volume 3 of Vanished, the primary story here revolves around the Navajo Dejooli family. Ana was Ben's little sister, born with heart issues, a youngster who disappeared several years ago from the Albuquerque hospital ICU while a family friend, Ben's best friend Joey, was sitting with her during their extensive death watch. No one ever found out what happened to her body. Ana was a fey child, always happy, a girl who lived in her imagination and was loved by everyone who knew her. Ben has never gotten past the fact that they were not able to say goodbye to Ana as custom dictated. There is a Navajo ritual that separates the living from the dead that helps to accept the loss of a loved one. They were denied that closure, and it still hurts.

There are several memorable characters who carry over in the series. Carolyn Adams is an oncology nurse at the main hospital in Alberquerque, working on the Intensive Care Unit for cancer patients, which is separate from the main ICU. Dr. Owen Bennet also works with cancer patients at the Alberquerque hospital. Both also donate time to the Chaco Health Center on the reservation. The other constant throughout the series is The Walker. The Walker is a changing personality, an escort, one you will learn to appreciate as things roll along. And, of course, the crows.

THE COYOTE WAY Centered around the Native Market held in Santa Fe, New Mexico every autumn. The Coyote Way is a stand-alone novel but much richer when viewed in the series. Grant lives now with Caroline and Owen in an RV, and the adults travel over the massive Navajo Reservation treating the ill during the day at various health clinics while Grant is attending the Navajo school in Chaco. He has his first crush, a Navajo girl with a mean older brother, and his interdependent relationship with the crow Choco has matured into a part of life as he now knows it.

Many native communities nationwide are involved in a push to be prepared for the annual street sale in Santa Fe, including the Chaco school children, who are helping prepare the booth for their art to be displayed and sold. Tens of thousands of tourists attend this sale every year. The biggest part of the annual income of these families comes from these sales, and many have spent most of the year preparing items to sell. And as lovely and quaint as Santa Fe is, it is also massively crowded, especially during this week, and prime for a terror attack. Everyone has to be on the lookout for weird. And there is quite a bit of weird around most of the time, so it's a difficult job to spot the dangers in this crowd. And there are many dangers, for our intrepid Navajo.

This one really stands out. The Coyote Way mixes mystery with Indigenous stories and spiritual vibes in a super unique way. It's a quick, intense read that pulls you in and makes you think. The Coyote as a character/symbol is wild (in a good way), and the story has this dreamlike quality that keeps you guessing.

It’s not your typical mystery—more emotional, more layered. A few parts could’ve used a little more explanation, but overall, it’s powerful and worth the read.

This was the final book of the Vanished series. If you like fantasy/magical realism, this is a great series.

Things I liked:
- I love all the New Mexico references, especially to Santa Fe.
- The Walker/Ben is my favorite character.

Things I didn't like:
- Owen dying! It was tragic, but I'm glad he got to come back to life.

This concludes the trilogy. The members of the Circle are worn down, and feeling that their existence is somehow suspending them from moving forward in their lives. Caroline still clings to a love she felt for Ben, which existed only for a few moments before he died and became the Walker of souls. Owen hangs on hoping Caroline will love him, but believing it will never happen. Grant is a teen ager and thus always unhappy about something. The world is out of sorts because Coyote, who is responsible for the souls that take the left turn in the river of death has abandoned his place to cause death and discontent in the land of the living. The Circle must get him back behind the veil before Coyote makes a play to capture the Bell and then with his own power, bring about the end of the world. The characters finally realize their purpose and not without much sacrifice, bring a plan to capture Coyote into play. In a strange way, the love that the characters feel for each other is a source of their pain, and the only solution to their pain. The parties have to choose; life or death, and if life, what kind of life. Rich with Navajo culture, this is a satisfying end to the trilogyj.

Just like Santa Claus?
In the US, people tell children that Santa Claus leaves presents for everyone on Christmas morning. They ass-u-me that the tale is the same on the whole planet, or at least that everyone wants it to be...
If a clever 7-years-old questions how Santa manages, the grown-ups hand-wave, "Magic. Hush!"
Ben the Wanderer is supposed to help every single dead person on Earth across the veil. In 2024, 62 million people died. At least. That is 2 per second. The Author hand-waves "skillful Multitasking". More like severe multiple split personality... And Ben still has time to brood for days on end.
This is supposedly about the Navajo Way.
It comes out as the Navajo Way or the Highway. Not even other Native Americans get a say.
Mr Griffith bites off more than he, or we, can chew.
Nothing less than a threatening End of the World will do.
Instead of being respectful towards the Navajo, they seem rather silly.

When Tony Hillerman wrote about Joe Leaphorn for the first time, in 1970, I was 13. Joe was the same age as my parents. He was educated, logical and wise. Very respectful.
This is just an overdone ghost story.

I don't know why I am enjoying these books so much, but I am. I've buzzed through the first four books. This particular one wasn't as enjoyable as the first two books, but I still got through it fast. I cannot tell how much the mixture of two cultures, the Navaho, and of course, white people is. Learning a lot about Navaho culture though I need to read some non-fiction about them as well. It's very interesting to peek into such a different world. All of these books are about concepts of death and life, and what the purpose of life is. How to protect this culture is very big in these books as well. It makes me sad to see people not appreciating the diversity we have in this country, and we do owe Native Americans a better life than we've left them with. We stole this country from them, and we need to make reparations to this group just as much as we need to for slavery.

Good writing, fascinating stories and histories, and very fast reads.

If you, like me, couldn't stop reading this series, I doubt you were disappointed in The Coyote Way. What a story! Griffith did an amazing job of tying it all together in this book. I wasn't sure how on earth (or beyond) it was going to work out, but it did to my relief. These characters are so real and having them each have a voice makes them even more so. They become more than characters; they become friends who you want to be safe and happy. And, you aren't quite sure, throughout this book if they will be either! I won't tell you. You'll have to read for yourself. I loved the Navaho spirituality in this book and how Griffith took a true Navaho story and wove into the plot. Such a good story. And Griffith is a wonderful writer. I'll be checking out more of his books.

The Vanished Series-B.B. Griffith-Book 3-The Coyote Way. I loved this book and this entire series of three. Wish there were more about Ben, Caroline, Owen and Grant. The coyote is a skin walker of Navajo Lore. In this book, it has escaped from the other side of the veil and is creating chaos in the living world. Chaos is what it does. It can jump from person to person causing a person to do things normally not even thought about. The way is a chant performed to send it back to the other side where it belongs. If you like paranormal stories you’ll love this one. The fact that you learn about Navajo culture is a plus. Start with book 1 and you’ll enjoy the series.

I struggled with how to rate this book. It's impossible to tell what the author's heritage is, as it doesn't seem like he's really ever said in a google-able manner, so I'm going to let that go, but.... Sk*nw*lkers are kind of a hard thing to want to see in literature, in a way. This isn't a telling of folklore, it's fiction, and everything I've read or seen about them and Navajo culture leads me to believe this way of handling them.... isn't it. So, we lose a star for that, and lose another because (I've mentioned in prev reviews) first person present.

I have not yet decided whether it's going to stop me from finishing the series. Shrug.

50 stars!

Wow, this book, and the whole series, are absolutely phenomenal! I cried at the end because I feel like I have become friends with the characters and I will miss them. I loved learning about the Navajo Way, especially
the chant rituals. I don't know how the author was able to do the in-depth investigation needed to be able to write these books. His talent seriously impresses me with all of his books but this series is my favorite so far. Please do yourself a favor and start with book #1 in this series, and then read books #2 and 3. I loved them all.

Coyote Lore

Great ending to the Vanished series until I discovered there is a book 4. The series read well and I enjoyed all the books. This book came full circle on the premise of the Navajo lore, myths and legends and this time involving not only crows but the coyote the symbol of chaos and by definition a trickster. A thrilling read with conflict, devotion, dedication and resolution.

Wonderfully intriguing series

I am hooked to this series. It always leaves me wanting more. The topic and characters are so different from what you usually see in books these days. It's nice to step out and be unique, at least it works for this author. I can't wait to start on the 4th book. I'm anxious. I would highly recommend this series to anyone. I'm telling everyone who will listen about it. It's so mesmerizing.

This is the last book of a three part series that started out intriguing, but sad and moved on to weird. I am not good with haunting novels, but there was good dialogue among some of the characters that made me laugh. The books are based in Navajo lore - but goes into a version of life after death that is daring to say the least. All in all good stories with interesting ideas.

This 3rd book of the Vanished trilogy was thrill-packed from the start to the end, even though no less fantastical. Nevertheless, eading all three books in the series taught me a lot about the Navajo & indigenous people in general: especially about taking things in life as they are & learning the value of waiting.

Good book with one far out there ending.

Wouldn’t it be nice if I could blame a spirit for all the bad attitudes people give me?

No anger towards them so no cross words from me and we’d still be friends.

This story is all about putting a nasty spirit back in the river of the dead. Not a totally awesome book but it is a good one.

Amazing story

I love these characters. Their strength, love and wisdom. I recently wrote a review for the first book where I said it touched my soul. This book grabs it and doesn't let go. Grant is dealing with puberty and first love. Caroline and Owen are a couple but she has only given him part of her heart. Ben is still walking and they all fight chaos together.

An excellent sequel (book 3) of Griffith’s “The Vanished Series” that pits the original group of supernatural humans against a nefarious coyote god. A mysterious series of murders, each victim dies alone in remote areas of the Navajo nation, bloodless and with no clue to why or how. The story’s ominous show down brings the groups members to a decision on their own lives and deaths.

Nice action, character development and further exploration of the dynamics between “white” and Navajo culture.
The story arc of Ben Dejooli, which started in book 1 of the Vanished series, comes to its natural conclusion. Story lines are satisfied and the series feels done. I’m wondering what happens to continue the series?

Best of the first 3.

I was shocked when I finished the first book to discover it was a series.i was surprised to see the second book occur mostly off the reservation, but it was necessary to the plot. This third book gave a good resolution to some issues and makes me look forward to the rest of the series.

Loved it

I just finished this and started it yesterday. All three books did this to me. The characters were not flat and it was interesting to have the stories told by all three of them. I plan on keeping track of BB Griffith.

The end of the trilogy. While still intriguing, this book did not quite live up to the promise of the first two. Grant is not as likable of a character as everyone else was. The action seemed to actually slow down a bit in this book as we headed toward the big conclusion.

A good read

I enjoyed these books. Just enough mystery, just enough romance and just enough sci fun/mysticism. I feel fortunate to have read them one after another. I definitely recommend these books.

Wow!!! This book is so intense!! All about acceptance; of who and what you are and what you've done and your place in the world. The author's in-depth research on the coyote in the Navajo lore just completes the story! This series is just amazing and I love these books!!

Well, the first book in the series was so engaging. I finished it super fast the second and third books left a lot to be desired. I don’t think I’ll read anymore in this series but if anyone is interested, the first book is definitely worth reading.

The author sounded like he was grabbing at straws to make a book out of this idea. Ben (the Walker) doesn't even sound like the Ben that I love from the first book. A satisfying ending, but I'm done with this series.
