The day after Halloween, the body of a woman is found in the woods covered with leaves. A Celtic knot is tattooed on her left shoulder, the word FORGIVEN branded on her chest. Sasha Winston's murder goes against everything her local sect of nature-celebrating Wiccans holds sacred. It's a case that will rock the city and test the courage and faith of Indianapolis PD detective Chennelle Kendall.
As rumors about witches rage through Circle City, Kendall enlists fellow cop Erica Barnes, an expert in Wiccan culture. With evidence pointing to the Avenging Angels Evangelical Church, whose members are stirring up religious fervor over the coven, it's looking more and more like a hate crime. Until the killer strikes again—and again—taking Kendall and Barnes down a path of twisted faith, desperate to stop another victim from receiving final absolution.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, M. E. (Michele) May now lives near Chicago with her husband, Paul. She has two children, four grandsons, three great grandsons, and two great granddaughters.
She studied Social and Behavioral Sciences at Indiana University, discovering what influences human behavior and finding her talent for writing.
Michele created the Circle City Mystery Series to showcase her hometown as well as give her readers great crime thrillers.
The first novel in the series, Perfidy, released in November 2012, won the 2013 Lovey Award for Best First Novel. This was followed by Inconspicuous (July 2013); Ensconced (Mar 2014); Purged (Nov 2014); and Unscrupulous (2015).
Extremely mediocre, and not exactly what I wanted, but compulsively readable with decent storytelling. I got frustrated reading about the cops' families, especially when they seemed to have no impact on the overall narrative of the book, but this is also the first in the series I have picked up. Readers of previous books might find it more compelling.
Scary and creepy but very good. I am impressed by the range of mysteries M.E. May comes up with. And again I love getting to know the different police staff in each book.
