Award-winning author Christie Golden has written over thirty novels and several short stories in the fields of science fiction, fantasy and horror. She has over a million books in print.

2009 will see no fewer than three novels published. First out in late April will be a World of Warcraft novel, Athas: Rise of the Lich King. This is the first Warcraft novel to appear in hardcover. Fans of the young paladin who fell so far from grace will get to read his definitive story.

In June, Golden’s first Star Wars novel, also a hardcover, sees print. Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi—Omen is the second in a nine-book series she is co-authoring with Aaron Allston and Troy Denning. Also in June comes the conclusion of Golden’s StarCraft: The Dark Templar Saga with the release of Twlight, the third book in the series. The first two are Firstborn and Shadow Hunters.

2004 saw the launch of an original fantasy series called The Final Dance, from LUNA Books. The first novel in the series, On Fire's Wings, was published in July of that year. The second, In Stone’s Clasp , came out in September of 2005. With In Stone’s Clasp, Golden won the Colorado Author’s League Top Hand Award for Best Genre Novel for the second time. The third book, Under Sea’s Shadow, is available only as an e-book

Golden is also the author of two original fantasy novels from Ace Books, King's Man and Thief and Instrument of Fate, which made the 1996 Nebula Preliminary Ballot. Under the pen name of Jadrien Bell, she wrote a historical fantasy thriller entitled A.D. 999, which won the Colorado Author's League Top Hand Award for Best Genre Novel of 1999.

Golden launched the TSR Ravenloft line in 1991 with her first novel, the highly successful Vampire of the Mists , which introduced elven vampire Jander Sunstar. Golden followed up Vampire with Dance of the Dead and The Enemy Within . In September of 2006, fifteen years to the month, The Ravenloft Covenant: Vampire of the Mists enabled Jander Sunstar to reach a whole new audience.

Other projects include a slew of Star Trek novels, among them The Murdered Sun , Marooned , and Seven of Nine , and "The Dark Matters Trilogy," Cloak and Dagger , Ghost Dance and Shadow of Heaven .

The Voyager novel relaunch, which includes Homecoming and The Farther Shore , were bestsellers and were the fastest-selling Trek novels of 2003. Golden continued writing VOYAGER novels even though the show went off the air, and enjoyed exploring the creative freedom that gave her in the two-parter called Spirit Walk, which includes Old Wounds and Enemy of my Enemy .

Golden has also written the novelization of Steven Spielberg's Invasion America and an original "prequel," On The Run , both of which received high praise from producer Harve Bennett. On The Run, a combination medical thriller and science fiction adventure, even prompted Bennett to invite Golden to assist in crafting the second season of the show, if it was renewed.

Golden lives in Loveland, Colorado, with her artist husband and their two cats.

Oh, I've been waiting for this!

I wanted to read it before the movie, but couldn't do so. And then I also failed to see the movie in time and... Some fan I am :/

Still, I've been waiting on this for almost 25 years! Some hesitation is to be expected :-)

Oh man. I was so prepared to enjoy this book to the fullest - cancelled all the meetings and told the secretary to hold all my calls!

In the real world, I got my favorite blanket, bucket of ice cream, and bunkered on the sofa :-)

Narrator? Toby Longworth. Errr... who? Dammit! I know nothing about this guy! If he ruins it, I'll find out where he lives and... send him a really stern letter!

But I had nothing to worry about! Toby is the master of vocal magic and this was not his first game-related rodeo, as I soon heard.

It was an audio version of a sweet honey! Unless you're weird and don't like honey. Then it was like an audio version of something you like very much!

So, what's this story good man Toby told me?

If you've been living under a rock or willingly avoided every mention of Warcraft movie and book for the fear of their catastrophic failure - you know what Warcraft is. Right? Games, novels, comics... if you missed all of that you really need to evaluate priorities in your life :)

Aaaaanyway... for both of you who haven't seen the movie yet - this book is written after the movie. Or after the script for it was already set in stone. If you've seen the movie, then the book will offer a lot more details about characters and events you've experienced on the big screen. Unless you pirated the movie. And you don't have a big screen at home.

Story, yes. It brings back memories of playing WarCraft: Orcs and Humans so many years ago. Orcs, fearless warriors, with their world burning had to find a way to survive. Powerful shaman Gul'Dan united all the Orcish tribes in the mighty Orcish Horde. He offered every Chieftain a way out. A way to the new world - Azeroth.

In Azeroth, usual bickering among the representatives of all the races was the common theme. Humans, Elves, Dwarves... petty things mattered until people of Azeroth started disappearing and reports of a fearsome new foe started coming in.

Gul'Dan, The Destroyer of Dreams, used the life force of thousands of Draenei prisoners to open a small gap in the Dark Portal between Azeroth and Draenor. A small force of strongest Orcs came through. Huge "beasts", enhanced by the dark magic Fel, who rode wolves started rampaging the kingdom of Azeroth, taking away prisoners from the other side of the portal.

Their life energy will once again feed the Dark Portal and the rest of Orc clans will come through to conquer the new world for the Horde.

Engaging, well written and a real treat for any fan of WarCraft universe. Yes, lore has changed or shifted here and there, but that simply has to happen as the universe matures. Still, it's nowhere near the clusterfuck that Star Wars universe became when Disney put their filthy paws on it :'(

I've read 4 books by Christie Golden before, all from Star Wars Expanded Universe. Liked every single one of them. Woman writes like the Scribe of God!

There's a prequel ready, Warcraft: Durotan , written and narrated by the same pair so that's my goal for early next year. Can't wait!

Speaking of the narrator, I just discovered he narrated Rendezvous with Rama by Sir Arthur Clarke, too! I started reading Rama series as very young and never finished. School library didn't have the sequel :/

Good thing Toby has a copy and will read it for me! :-)

This Warcraft book (and audiobook) is more than a year old, but no Audible entry was added to Goodreads. That was a shocker, but is fixed now :)

Total score, very strong 5* for both story and the execution. But take this with a chunk of salt as I'm heavily biased here.

Oh man. It's 10th already. It's been exactly 10 years since I stopped playing World of Warcraft! This sounds eerily like Alcoholics Anonymous :'(

Feels like it all happened forever ago...

I guess 10 Years = 1 Forever. That must make me 4 years short of 4 forevers, for sure.

I will never do that again. I'll show myself out...

In the Age of Chaos, two factions battled for dominance. The Kingdom of Azeroth was a prosperous one. The Humans who dwelled there turned the land into a paradise. The Knights of Stormwind, and the Clerics of Northshire Abbey, roamed far and wide serving the king's people with honor and justice. The well-trained armies of the King maintained a lasting peace for many generations. Then came the Orcish Hordes.

No one knew where these creatures came from, and none were prepared for the terror that they spawned. Their warriors wielded axe and spear with deadly proficiency, while others rode Darkwolves as black as the moonless night. Unimagined were the destructive powers of their evil magiks, derived from the fires of the underworld.

With an ingenious arsenal of weaponry and powerful magic, these two forces collide in a contest of cunning, intellect, and brute strength, with the victor claiming dominance over the whole of Azeroth.

Welcome to the World of Warcraft.

I still remember the voice reading this. Back in 1994...

I'll admit if you've seen the live action movie you almost wholly know the plot of this novel. The only variations you'll find between the movie and novel is the last few chapters that expand on the story. Which allows for a more satisfying ending while still leaving the ending open to be expanded on. This still has the amazing characters and plot that leads to gut retching moments. That gives the ending the punch it has.

I really love Christie Golden’s books. This book was well written. The only thing is the lore was very hard to digest so I had to keep reminding myself that this book is based off the movie and not all accurate to the original Warcraft Lore. There were times were I was like nope that didn’t happen or nope that’s not true. But overall I found the book better than the actual movie.

A novelização do aguardado filme de ação e fantasia Warcraft. Há muito Azeroth está em paz. RESENHA

TRECHO

Lothar’s mind was too busy working out scenarios for him to sleep at once, so he gnawed on a leftover piece of chicken and watched the watcher instead. To his credit, the boy seemed to take the duty seriously. Lothar half-expected Khadgar to have sneaked his book with him so he could read by moonlight, or firelight, or maybe a tiny point of blue flame dancing at the end of his fingers. Who knew what sort of things mages could do.

Instead, the youth’s head turned, rather shyly, in Garona’s direction. She lay facing away, her distinctive curves soft and rolling and green as the hills of Elwynn. Lothar was amused—but he also didn’t like it.

“Well,” he said, shattering the silence, “at least you’re not reading.”

Khadgar jerked his head back toward the path. Lothar smiled to himself.

“He wishes to lie with me.” Garona’s voice was matter-of-fact and Khadgar cringed, almost squirming with embarrassment.

She propped herself up on one arm, watching them both.

“I beg your pardon?” Khadgar tried to sound perplexed by the accusation, but his voice climbed a little too high for it to be convincing.

“You would be injured,” she stated.

“I don’t want to lie with you!”

It was all Lothar could do to not laugh out loud. Garona simply shrugged. “Good. You would not be an effective mate.”

This time, Lothar couldn’t help it, and a snort of laughter escaped him.

“Why do you laugh?” Garona asked, and it was Lothar’s turn to feel uncomfortable. “I cannot see how you humans survive such a thing. How you survive anything. No muscles to protect you. Brittle bones that break.”

“You don’t look that different to us. How did you survive?”

She went still. Her voice when she replied no longer held mirth. It was careful; cool. “Broken bones heal stronger. Mine are very strong.”

It took me a while to get this book going, but when it did, I kept having to pull myself out of World of Warcraft to read it, it inspired me to play the game that much!

There's a lot of the lore that we already know from the game woven into it, but it also picks up where Warcraft: Durotan leaves off. I found a few surprises waiting for me between these pages! Sadly, I can't say much, because it would spoil the book/movie for folks, but I can say that the characterization was very well done, and I found myself connecting with a number of the characters. I was even in tears at the end of the book, especially with the events of the Legion pre-expansion! All things considered, it was a highly enjoyable read, and it has me looking forward to both watching the movie it is based on, and playing World of Warcraft!

Azeroth on vist üks neist maailmadest, mille kohta ma võiksin lõputult lugeda.

MAKE DALARAN GREAT AGAIN

A story of migration and conflict

Movie Novelization is very accurate. This following is not for people unfamiliar with the work...

I was hoping it would resemble more of the original script since it was said that script focused heavily on the human side with an unfriendly portrayal of the Orcs. While the Orc legacy is treated honorably coming off the prequel to this book which is wholly Orc focused made overloaded on the subject before I began... the introduction repeats a lot of text exactly as written in the prequel too which didn't help for building my interest.

Storywise it is really great. The theme this year from Hollywood successes (as opposed to big budget Hollywood flops) is a great conflict forced by the desperation of a great migration.

Outside the Warcraft universe, as a fantasy novel, a fictional war drama the story stands alone as being a great piece of work even when you strip the licensing, my nostalgia, and familiarity with the series- I think there is still a great fantasy story being told here. IT being in the Warcraft universe just increases my excitement, some cases created new bonds but grew the intensity I had for this "universe."

All things said- really glad Christie Golden wrote this and not Metzen

Nothing special, simply a retelling of the retconned film narration. Polish translation felt a bit hopeless, but what to expect when the translator has not bothered to even play the game?

Overall, I liked the film; it effectively introduces newcomers to the game's lore, despite some elements being changed. This is to be expected, as films often diverge from their original material, whether books or games. In this regard, I believe Blizzard successfully conveyed the essence. If there were one addition I could suggest, it would be to inject a bit of humor, perhaps through a scene depicting a character farming resources. This is a particularly relevant issue in the game, leading many to turn to WoW Gold Sellers(https://wowvendor.com/shop/wow-gold/) to bypass certain gameplay obstacles. It would be amusing and enlightening to see a scene where a character stands in the capital and asks passersby for gold to unlock new abilities

*This book was reviewed for the San Francisco Book Review*

Warcraft was adapted from screenplay to novel by Christie Golden. It follows Lothar as he is dealing with reports of mysterious of attacks. Khadgar, a baby mage, once destined to be Azeroth’s next Guardian, approached Lothar about other attacks bearing similar evidence of the danger and insists the the Guardian of Azeroth be summoned. Lothar takes him to King Llane. The King sends Lothar and Khadgar to Karazahn, home of the Guardian.

What they find is unsettling to the least. The once bustling tower is now devoid of the staff necessary to keep in running. Only Medivh, his personal attendant Moroes, and a few kitchen and forge people remain. Medivh himself looks drawn and haggard, not at all the person Lothar met. Khadgar convinces Medivh to come help against this new threat.

Said threat turns out to be fel-tainted Orcs from another world, a world now dead. They were brought to Azeroth by Gul’dan, orcish warlock. Skirmishes with the weaker, but more numerous humans lead the orc chieftain Durotan to seek a truce with the humans. A half-orc named Garona, slave to Gul’dan, is captured and turns traitor, helping Llane and Lothar.

Ultimately, Durotan is betrayed by his closest friend, his right hand. Durotan’s Frostwolf clan is wiped out, but this helps Orgrim see the true treachery and danger Gul’dan poses. He takes up Durotan's cause, denouncing the fel, and fighting alongside humans however briefly. They all get a surprise adversary in the form of the Guardian, Medivh. He has been corrupted by the fel as well. Khadgar comes to his own here, becoming in action the Guardian he had once hoped to be.

Warcraft as a game is a thing I have a passing familiarity to. I felt I never had the time to invest in a game that really never ends. I’m more a Final Fantasy kind of gal. I have, in the past, enjoyed Warcraft based books suggested by a co-worker. I found this story engaging and the characters enchanting. Khadgar is quite the adorable little mage, no matter how strong he is. I’m fairly certain if you are a Warcraft fan, you’ll enjoy this read, and certainly if you are a fantasy fan. I really wanna see the movie now! I also want to see more with these characters. So many questions raised, so many possibilities. Maybe another movie is in the works?

This book could really use another editing run-through. There were several grammar errors, and places where names were switched in a confusing manner. They were very noticeable to me, though they didn't detract from the overall story. The most confusing parts were when the names randomly changed and I had to parse out who was really meant.

I'll start by saying I haven't yet seen the movie. I'd heard enough terrible reviews to have avoided it until now, but after reading the book, I'll definitely be watching the movie! I really enjoyed the novelization. I've loved Christie Golden's previous Warcraft books, and as usual, she didn't disappoint. Her knowledge of Azaroth lore shines as usual, and her fondness for the world (and the game) is clear in everything she writes in this world.

After playing the game for a decade, I consider myself pretty well versed in Azeroth lore -- yet Golden never ceases to amaze and impress me with her approach to telling the stories of the characters we've come to know and love. Best of all, reading the book has refuelled my love for the game. I'm now once again fully immersed in my beloved RPG, and that's a gift every one of Golden's Warcraft novels has given me. Every time I start to get a little bored, or I begin to think I've done all there is to do in Azeroth, all I have to do is pick up one of Golden's books and I'm right back there, experiencing that wide-eyed wonder of a newbie player all those years ago. Another terrific novel for my Warcraft shelf!

Listen, I love Warcraft books and Warcraft lore. This movie/story takes all of the known lore and twists it around for a different version of what we all love.

So naturally I spent a lot of time wondering why they had to change so much. Even still I was trying to go with the flow. A lot of story lines go into Warcraft lore so they do need to change it up for a 90 minute movie.

Still, I love Durotan with all my heart. I feel in love with Thrall/ Go'el al long time ago and now I love his Dad just as much. Draka is amazing. Every scene she is in pulls on my heart. Christie writes in such an amazing way, that I feel like I am Draka.

Also, I've always loved Garona. I love her so much in both of these books. She's so fierce, yet so broken.

Then the story reaches it's climax and I found myself shaking with tears. Just absolutely sobbing. Any thought of not loving this book went right out the window. I wish we could see where this story was going to go if he had more than one movie.

They should let Christie continue it in book form! Please? For me?

This book was quite fun to read. I do enjoy the movie and I like to read it once in a while. I am a fan of novels and fantasy stories and this book satisfied that desire. This book is worth reading and not boring at all.

I recommend this book to all fans of the WoW movie and anyone who enjoys a good book set in a fantasy world.

By the way, I am also a fan of World of Warcraft. Well I quit playing 5 years ago because of the new updates and the direction the game was going and now I decided to get back into what I love and re-start a classic game and bought much wow classic gold and well I've been playing for 8 hours straight lol! This game is still great and it's been years...thanks blizzard for bringing back all the memories and this game looks amazing in 4k ultra.

Golden's novelization of the Warcraft movie was well-crafted and engaging, truly capturing the spirit of Azeroth. Draka and Durotan were both compelling and sympathetic characters whose plight moved me the most. I'm quite drawn to this lore, and am glad for Golden's vision. I felt that some of the threads woven in were neglected, such as the history between Lothar and Magni, or of the bond between Llane, Lothar, and Medivh; even though there are undoubtedly other books that cover these in more depth, we shouldn't simply be told of how deep their bond is: it could have been more explicitly demonstrated through further backstory. However, perhaps that would have made the book more cumbersome. Still, a highly enjoyable read!

Set during the First War we get to have an in depth look at the war that started it all in the original Warcraft game. As someone who loved the original Warcraft when I was younger, this book had it all and I was taken back to my youth. In regards to canon, there were some changes to try and fit more in with the modern story and I suppose one could suggest that this is only movie accurate not mainline accurate. Very easy to read, I found myself around 200 pages or so in a sitting and was enjoying most of it.

As I wrote earlier, some of the changes weren't my cup of tea and I didn't like the newer explanations, but overall found this retelling to be quite enjoyable.

I'm going to be reviewing this book in comparison with the prequel book "Durotan" and Warcraft film, both of which I thought were excellent.

The book Durotan, which is a prequel to this story, did a magnificent job in laying the groundwork for the Orc's as a race, and Durotan and Draka as characters. You become invested in the plight of the Frostwolf clan, and you also have this incredible picture of how their brand of naturalistic Shaman-magic works within their society.

I can't say this book did the exact same for humans. I suppose since we're all humans reading this book we're not expected to have to work as hard to relate to people who look and act like us.

That's not to say that the human characters aren't likable, or that their personalities are necessarily boring (I loved noticing how similar Llane's personality was to his future grandson. I liked how Garona DIDN'T just as much as she became attached to the whole Lothar-Wrynn Fam-Bam, and wanting to be a part of it.) But following several characters simultaneously, does have it's disadvantages. You could build up backstories and relationships a lot easier when you have two primary characters instead of eight.

The Warcraft movie also provided some exquisite visuals for the Humans' more ethereal brand of Arcane magic. I was eager to see how it would translate to page. The explanation given in this book make sense:

Arcane is an elite school of magic. The practitioners of arcane magic are pretty much this world's scientists and scholars. In a world that's just barely discovered guns; they've discovered life on other planets. They are so far ahead of everyone else, technologically, that they're afraid of what might happen if they share their knowledge, so they cut themselves off from society and kind of wallow in their knowledge and power, not really doing anything with them to help people.

The dilemma is an engaging one; it's the driving force for the story as a whole, and two of our main characters in particular. The problem is that it isn't addressed until relatively late in the story. And when it is, it's kind of explored heavy handedly.

Which is a shame, because I felt like it was dealt with quite tactfully in the movie.

A lot of Warcraft fans weren't too fond of the changes in lore, I really liked them. In this version of the story, almost all of the primary characters are parents and they struggle with putting their children's needs first. Even the ones who aren't parents talk about their struggle with the decisions their parents made.

Within the World of Warcraft timeline, this is the parent generation and the decisions they make now will influence all of their children for generations to come.

Fittingly, the story kinda ends with the POV of the rising generation. The three people who are, in some ways, products and heirs to this conflict. It just begs for a sequel!

Notes:

Drek'Thar comes across the Dark Portal along with the Warrior Frostwolves. Drek'Thar is a Shaman, but Durotan brings him along anyway because he thinks he might come in handy. I was actually exited we might get some prophecy about Thrall, or some ominous warning/foreboding that allows Durotan to prepare for the inevitable. But no...he's never freakn' mentioned again! BOOOOOO!!!

It was fine

I was hoping that as the movie was legendarily supposed to be three hours until it was cut down to two hours, I was hoping the novel might show what the movie was meant to feel like.

However, instead the novel seemed to prove that even at three hours the movie would have felt rushed and kinda nonsense.

Even with internal monologues it was obvious the writer was struggling to make sense of she of the nonsensical dialogue... but they really tried and the effort equates to something that was just FINE and little more.

From the point of view of books and lore, everything is very messed up, but for the average viewer this is a successful move. I would like a continuation of such a successful film adaptation, especially since there is a lot of source material. In fact, you can make a whole cinematic universe, if only you want and have the money, and in the gaming world (https://epiccarry.com/wow/boost/gold) will help with this. But I would like to see bidding at an auction for various items, and goblin bankers greedy for gold.

From a lore and book perspective, things may be a bit chaotic, but for the average viewer, it’s a successful move. I’d love to see a continuation of this film adaptation, especially with so much source material still untouched. There’s enough content to build an entire cinematic universe—if there’s enough interest and funding. In the gaming world, https://gamer-choice.com/in-game-curr... can help support this expansion. Personally, I’d love to see item bidding at auctions and goblin bankers obsessed with gold brought to life on screen.

Though this novel follows the big screen version of this story in an exacting way, there are extra scenes scattered about to give more depth and explanation to the story.
I did notice quite a few misspellings, typos, and problematic grammar during my reading that should have been caught by the editor prior to release. For their frequency alone I took off one star. Overall this was well written, however, and I believe fans of the game and the lore behind it will truly enjoy this novelization.

"Pokud toužíš po lásce," řekl tiše a hlas se mu třásl emocemi, "musíš být ochotná cestovat až na konec světa, abys ji našla. A možná i mnohem dál." (s.197-8)

Film mě tehdy přivedl ke knihám a světu Warcraft. Proto i putování Prvním Střetem bylo skvělé, i když bez překvapení. Díky filmu se můj život obohatil o tenhle úžasný svět a proto i přes některé nedostatky bude mít i tato kniha vždy své místo v mé knihovně.

One of the best novelizations. I thought the movie was good but lacking in context. This is truly an “Extended Edition” filling in the missing gaps—making what was a seemingly incomplete movie narrative into a complete one. If you liked what you saw in the movie Warcraft then I highly recommend you first read the prequel novel “Durotan” and then read this novelization. It’s a very quick read and a fun time. Highly Recommended.
