Subhas and Sarat: An Intimate Memoir of the Bose Brothers

Rate this book
Subhas and Sarat is a closely observed portrait of the Bose family of Bengal-especially its two most famous members, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and his older brother, Sarat Chandra Bose-and their role in India's freedom struggle. The author, Sisir Kumar Bose (1920–2000)-Netaji's nephew, and the son of Sarat Chandra Bose-focuses especially on the period spanning the mid-1920s to the turbulent 1940s when the freedom movement was at its peak. We are offered unprecedented insights into the participation of Subhas and Sarat in the politics of the time. From being a careful observer of the events taking place around him, the author becomes a participant in Netaji's great escape from the colonial authorities, when he drives his uncle, under cover of darkness, from Calcutta to the Gomoh railhead in Bihar, from where Netaji travels to Kabul-and goes on to become the Supreme Commander of the Indian National Army. Illustrated with rare photographs and documents, this lucidly written memoir is both the most original account of the public and private lives of Subhas and Sarat Bose and an enthralling narrative of India's journey to independence.

Her majesty opponents : The Bose brothers
-----------------------------------------------------------------

1) Subhas and Sarat, an intimate memoir of the Bose brothers, is a complete book in itself in which the reader will get valuable information about the Bose family, contribution of netaji and Sarat bose in the Indian freedom movement, author's own experience of participating in the Indian freedom struggle and how he helped his uncle Subhas in the Great escape of 20th century.

2) This book was first originally published in Bengali in June 1985 under the title 'Bosu-bari' (The house of the boses), and it was written especially for childrens and adolescents. The book is divided into 75 short chapters.

3) Sarat bose and Subhas Chandra Bose, the two great sons of mother india who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of hindustan from the yoke of British imperialism.

4) Netaji was very close to his elder brother Sarat and the latter's wife Bhivabati Bose. After escaping from India he regularly sended coded message to Sarat bose about his whereabouts and his plans to free mother india.

5) Sarat bose himself was a renowned leader in the Congress party and very eminent barrister. Later he served as a minister in the interim government of India formed in 1946.

6) Author tells us when netaji resigned from the Indian Civil service in 1921, because of this decision Netaji's entire family was in a state of shock. But they knew Subhas was very stubborn and once he made his mind then not even almighty can change that decision. As Netaji's political guru C.R das did not live for long but netaji followed the principles taught by his guru to him. Infact when netaji was elected as president of the Indian national Congress in 1938 his whole family was proud of him, and later when netaji contested second time for the post of president of congress in 1939, and because of this some conservative members in the Congress became upset and opposed netaji, although netaji defeated the candidate who was supported by Gandhiji, but later netaji was forced to resign from the president ship of the Congress party, and later he was himself expelled from the congress party. Author said that netaji told that the tripuri Congress session in 1939 was one of the most bitter moment of his life.

7) The most interesting chapter in this book is the one in which author described how he and his closed cousins helped netaji in the 'Greatest escape of the 20th century', by fooling the British Raj.

8) Because of the author's regular contact with the bengal revolutionaries and his active participation in the freedom movement, British authorities arrested him and lodged him in red fort, the notorious lahore fort, and then to LyallpurJail in 1944-45. He also shared his horrifying experience of staying in jail during British rule and also about his medical education in Europe and traveling in various countries of Europe with his father and family. And he also described when first time they saw Netaji's wife Emilie Schenkl and Netaji's daughter Anita in Vienna.

9) The author also included some rare pictures of Bose family, pics of Netaji's father and mother, with wife Emilie and some very rare documents related to netaji.

10) I will recommend to Readers to read this book because it provides us very valuable information related to the life of Bose brothers and their contributions in the Indian freedom struggle, so don't miss this book, pick it and read it thoroughly.
