From the international bestselling author of STOP THE WEDDING! and the BODY MOVERS mystery series comes a new story of family drama, suspense, comedy, and romance.
In COMA GIRL, a victim of a tragic event lies in a hospital bed, at the mercy of friends and relatives who think she can't hear them. But she SO can.
This COMA GIRL, Part 1 novella is a month's worth of daily segments for JULY, 2016.
USA TODAY bestselling author Stephanie Bond was seven years deep into a systems engineering career and pursuing an MBA at night when an instructor remarked that she had a flair for writing and suggested that she submit to academic journals. But Stephanie, a voracious reader, was only interested in writing fiction–more specifically, romantic fiction.
Upon completing her master’s degree and with no formal training in writing (her undergraduate degree is in computer programming), she started writing a romance novel in her spare time. Two years later in 1995 she sold her first manuscript, a romantic comedy, to Harlequin Books.
In 1997, with ten sales under her belt to two publishers, Stephanie left her corporate job to write women’s romantic fiction full-time. In 2011,
Stephanie launched a self-publishing business. Since that time, she has sold more than 1 million copies of her own books. To-date, Stephanie has published over 70 novels and has over 6 million copies of her work in worldwide distribution in numerous languages and formats.
I normally eschew serials, but this one was free with Amazon Prime Reading, so I took a shot. I have to say I was hooked from page one. I'll definitely be reading more in this serial!
Loved everything about Stephanie Bond's Coma Girl: part 1 including the concept, great cast of characters, and her light touch. Am happily beginning the second in the series.
The Coma Girl books are a fascinating series of short books that follow a family after a tragic car accident leaves a young woman hospitalized in a coma on a coma ward. Although they are told she is likely not to recover what they do not realize is that she is fully aware of the conversations around her although she cannot move or respond. In the first book you learn as she learns about the accident and the investigation into the cause. The reader is also introduced to her lovingly dysfunctional family, quirky roommate and medical personnel who interact with "coma girl" as she becomes an internet sensation. The central character maintains a steady dialogue in her head that is often funny, thoughtful and agonizing. If you are in healthcare you will be ever mindful of what you say in the presence of a presumed comatose patient. You will want to begin Coma Girl part 2 immediately so you might as well get it at the same time.
I love the series Coma Girl. I look forward to the next book to be released sometime during this month (September 2016). I like how the author has stated that it is a story with 6 books. I know by the 6 books statement, that I will not be led down a long road (thinking of Stephen's King "Under the Dome" TV series that I abandoned because I felt like I had been had, the way the series was stretched unbelievably thin). Coma Girl is interesting and keeps me reading each short book (approx. 150 pages) at one time when I am able. I know that some people are aggravated by series books, but I read these on Kindle Unlimited that is available for a monthly fee or if you buy Coma Girl Kindle books, they are very reasonably priced! Thanks to Stephanie Bond, the author whom I don't know, but am looking forward to more Coma Girl books and will check out her other books.
I decided to review all six parts of COMA GIRL as one because I didn’t see the point of every review saying “She’s still in a coma” and “Another secret and/or confession was revealed”. All six parts take place between July 1st and December 31st and total about 600 pages. Apart from Part 6, every novella ended with a cliffhanger that I didn’t see coming.
Marigold was involved in a terrible car accident in June which left her in a coma, however she’s able to hear everything that is said around her. Throughout the months she has regular visits from her family, her best friend, a scary but hilarious nun, the detective investigating her accident, a mystery man who reads poetry, and a doctor who won’t give up that one day she will wake up. Almost every person who visited her confessed their secrets and personal problems, and it was evident very early on that her parents treated her differently from their other children and that her entire family is not involved in her life and know nothing about her. Which is scary because her family now have the right to make medical decisions on her behalf.
I’ll be honest, there’s not much of a romance element to this story, at least there isn’t until you reach the end of November. Assuming she would one day wake up, I kept trying to figure out who she was going to end up with as there were a couple of possibilities, even though she was pining for a man who was marrying someone else. Spoiler Alert: She does wake up. She tells a few people that she could hear everything, but when it came to her family she decided to keep their secrets and start fresh. Her quick forgiveness of her entire family for all they said and did was probably the only disappointing part of this entire series. No-one can heal and move on if everyone is still keeping secrets.
COMA GIRL is told only in Marigold’s POV and to get the most out of the series, it needs to be read in order. The author calls it a daily serial and it is written almost like a journal, with each new chapter being a new day and just a few pages long. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book laid out in such a way, and I found I didn’t mind it. There is no epilogue, which was disappointing as I would have loved to have seen a glimpse into Marigold’s future.
Coma Girl was billed as "family drama, suspense, comedy, and romance." I wasn't entirely sure how that would happen, seeing as the main character, Marigold Kemp, was unconscious and confined to one room in a hospital - the "vegetable patch" - but somehow, Coma Girl managed to be all that and more.
The book is written diary-style, with a chapter for each day over six months. Marigold ends up in a coma when her car is hit head-on by a famous footballer, an accident her sister walks away from. The twist? Marigold becomes a social media sensation, and while she can't see anything, she can hear every word her visitors say, and her memory works pretty well too.
From her fame-hungry sister, her fighting parents, and her wannabe psychic aunt to her ex-boyfriend, a renegade doctor, and an orderly who can't keep it in his pants, Marigold's certainly got a lot to think about. And then there's the sports-obsessed detective and the mysterious stranger who reads her poetry, plus the other three occupants she shares her room with. All of their stories twine together in Marigold's head, and it's amazing the secrets people tell when they think nobody can hear them.
There are plenty of twists in Coma Girl's story, and the bite-sized chapters means it's easy to pick up and put down again if you don't get obsessed like me - once I started on this series, I binge-read all six books in the series in one day (they're quite short, around a hundred pages each) and finished, exhausted, at two o'clock in the morning.
Funny and clever, considering the entire premise of the story. It kind of grabs you and continues to be compelling as Marigold hears the daily updates from conversations between others and those who talk directly to her. Those include doctors, family, a detective, and various friends who are unaware or unsure if she can actually hear them. Marigold and the rotating cast of characters are fun and entertaining. There’s also a potential romance brewing. It’ll be interesting to see how that element plays out when considering the few different hero possibilities.
I’ve been interested in this serial for awhile, but finally started it when the author offered it in a daily podcast format on Audible. While I absolutely love the narrator’s performance, listening to 5 minutes (give or take) of the story every day isn’t my favorite way to consume a book. At the same time, since each podcast is one day in Marigold’s life while in a coma, it’s a convenient medium and an easy way to fit into my day. Broken down, though, the 6-part serial will take 6 months to finish. That feels a bit daunting in the respect that I might forget some of the beginning as it nears the end. I’m willing to continue this format for now as I struggle to find reading time in my day, but may switch to consuming it in one go at some point.
I read the entire set of books (1 through 6) as daily installments on Ms. Bond's website and thoroughly enjoyed them. The idea of having a woman in a coma who can hear what's happening around her but cannot communicate is an interesting concept, especially when the people trying to talk to her are offering interesting ideas and confessing. There is humor from Marigold as well. Well done, Ms. Bond!
This is a very interesting book. I can put myself in the head of Merigold, and I am just as frustrated as she is when her doctor refuses to believe she made any sort of movement. I hope the next installment comes out soon.
In A Nutshell:Marigold Kemp is in a coma following a car crash. Marigold can hear, but nobody knows that for sure. So, it leads to a fantastic cast of characters including her dysfunctional family, crazy friends, members of the justice system and hospital staff letting their emotional guard down. You will laugh, perhaps shed a tear, but Coma Girl will enthral readers. Clever, funny and thought-provoking.
The Protagonist(s):Marigold Kemp is the middle child in a family of three. And so in many ways, Marigold appears the forgotten child. Her elder brother is a war hero and her younger sister the brain box. Written in the first person, Marigold aka Coma Girl gets to hear all sorts of secrets and confessions which she processes with dry humour.
I have covered Coma Girl 1 -5 in this review. The stories are so addictive I just had to keep on going. The story begins with Marigold hospitalized following a car accident that led to severe head trauma and her coma. The book is in the style of diary entries and starts on 1 July. There are plenty of twists and laughs in every entry.
Over the course of six months, Marigold becomes the social media sensation Coma Girl. And that brings additional pressure to Marigold's case and the other patients in the 'vegetable patch' which is what some hospital workers call the coma ward.
Readers will meet the detective Jack Terry who is investigating her case. And the head-on collision involving NFL star player Keith Young is not all it seems. There is the dedication of Dr. Jarvis, and the ethical lines one will's the professionals to cross. And some people are just so dang frustrating. Grrr. And others like Marigold's mum and sister are callous at times.
But there is plenty of humour, provided by Coma Girl, her wonderful aunt Winnie and Roberta, the best friend. There are also quirky characters like Sister Irene. All of them make for witty dialogue.
Coma Girl is a novel concept that might sound boring but is anything but! Highly recommended

>Book Review – Coma Girl >I am an independent reviewer. These books are a 6 part serial that ends in an HEA. Marigold is mentally alert, but stuck in a coma. As she gets visitors, they begin to unburden themselves and she learns TMI about her entire family, friends and even strangers. The story is both heartwarming and heart breaking. There is an unusual amount of humor, especially with Marigold’s aunt Winnie and her wanna be psychic friend who is more miss than hit. >The book also highlights the kindness of strangers. There is a little girl, especially, who seems to know exactly when Marigold needs a little mental pick-me-up. There are also instances of incredible cruelty, as some hospital workers refer to Marigold’s room and roommates as the “vegetable patch”. >Social media takes off, creating an internet sensation with “Coma Girl”. Along with all of this attention, the reality of the crazies really is quite scary. The scenes where Marigold attempts to communicate were poignant. The whole experience creates a new outlook for Marigold, as secrets are revealed. I had a different HEA in mind for her, though. >These books are appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving the serial 5 stars. The story is a quick read and so very entertaining.
This was one of the best things I read--fiction, non-fiction, essays, novellas, books, whatever--simply one of the best stories I read in 2017. Yes, I had to find out what happened next, so I bought each of the parts. What a unique premise--and a scary one! Imagine being so helpless, yet so aware, lying in a hospital bed while the world around you assumes you are unconscious. Knowing the author from her romances, I kept guessing which of the many men who check in on the Coma Girl would end up being the right one for her. ;) This whole series is full of twists and turns--how does an author make plot twists happen when the main character cannot move or see, only hear? It's amazing, but she does it. She keeps the tone surprisingly cheerful, too, and the suspense of wondering what will happen next kept me turning the pages. You'll be glad you don't have to wait for each part to be published! They're all available now. You'll zoom right through them, like I did, I'm sure.
I don't know what captivated me the most. That Marigold was in a coma and her life was hanging in the balance with her family going about their business making this a "thing" or being in her head while this is all going on around her!
There was never a doubt I picked this book for a reason. I just didn't realize it until I was in and then ... well now I have to read more. I want to know who is reading her the poems. I want to know more about the police officer. I want to know what is happening with her sister and her school project no one ever really talks about. It is like looking outside wile also being able to look inside as well. You will never know what I mean unless you start this series.
What I really want to know is who ends up giving up on her? Who is routing for her to finally make a medical miracle? Who will be the last one standing if she wakes up from from being Coma Girl?
Marigold Kemp, middle child, ignored but her family and in general, but gains popularity once she has a head on collision with a footballer star and is in a coma( TBI), hence ‘Coma Girl’. As the novel evolved, you realize how little her family, PU, liked or truly knew her, especially as her social media fame exponentially rockets upwards.
Dr. Jarvis ( hoping he brings her back), Alex her brother/ smart army dude, Detective Jack Terry, Roberta her roommate, and Aunt Winnie are my favorite characters who also root for Marigold to wake up. While Mom, Sidney her uninjured smart sister, Dr. Tyson, Duncan her ex/newly engaged, and David Spooner family media liaison/ lawyer are my least favorite due to their egotistical mannerisms. Some funny one lines, but it did end on a cliff hanger as to the real cause of the accident. Definitely not as gravity defying as ‘Factory Girl Part 1’!!!!

An absolute treat to find this little book series. Coma Girl is as it sounds, about a 28 year old woman trapped in a comatose body, but fully aware and cognizant of all that is happening around her even though no one else is aware of it. The book is told in daily segments from her perspective of hearing and smelling but unable to do anything else. Her visitors are her parents, her sister, her roommate, a well meaning nun, a delightful aunt and her psychic friend, her ex boyfriend, doctors, nurses, a police detective and a PR person. It is wickedly smart and fresh and cant help to make you root for Marigold. Each book is another month in the hospital after the auto accident and i cant wait to stat book two.
Coma Girl is a 6 part serial following Marigold Kemp as she tries to recover from a serious head injury caused by a car accident. Marigold has visitors who aren't certain that they can be heard, so the interactions with her in a vegetative state is...interesting.
I really enjoyed the concept of this serial. Each installment was a month in the ward. The things Marigold became a witness to were sometimes heartbreaking but many times hilarious. I found this story entertaining and refreshing. It was also interesting that there was little if any description for the characters, so it allowed my imagination to run wild. Cool concept. Maybe offer a boxset??
This is the second series I’ve read by Bond… I guess I should say, I’m “reading,” because I barely finished this first book. I read her Elevator Girl series a couple years back and really enjoyed it. This book already has me captivated. My guess is that Marigold will wake up during book 6, but who knows?!
Bond is really funny and I always like her witty remarks. And who knew so much information and great writing could happen regarding a girl in a coma? The material is great! Can’t wait to start book 2!
PS - please tell me I’m not the only one who hears the song “Girlfriend in a Coma” by The Smiths in their head every time they see this book cover?
This was an interesting first installment to a series as told from the point of view from a young woman in a coma. People come and go in her room and she slowly pieces together that there has been an accident and now there is an investigation. She is in a long term care unit, surrounded with three other beds of women that are also in comas. People come and go - her parents, her sister, an investigator, her old roommate, her old boyfriend. She can hear but she can not speak or respond. Quite a bit goes on and in spite of her limited senses it becomes quite an interesting story.
I ventured into the podcast world and while I was overwhelmed with where to start, I went the easy route and chose a fictional “serial”. I was glad to see Bond also wrote these as novellas so I can count them. 😁 I like the fact that these serials are short so I can listen to quite a few and don’t feel bad if I stop because it’s not in the middle of a long chapter. I’ve read a few of Bond’s other novels and I enjoyed the characters and storylines, and this is no different. I liked the bonus episode that shared her inspiration for this idea too.
This is part 1 of 6 part daily serial, part one is July.
Loving the concept of this daily serial, a girl in a coma after an unfortunate traffic accident, able to hear all the conversations of family, friends, police, doctors, medical staff & anyone else that decides to visit, without any of them realising that she can hear everything.
I'm quite enjoying Coma Girl, getting to know her and meeting all those that visit her. Definitely a whole host of interesting characters.
I love that they are short, quick reads, heading straight into part 2 which is the month of August.
I just did not know what to expect, from this book but I'm glad I took a chance on it. It was so refreshingly different, interesting and addictive, I could not put it down. In the end I cannot wait for part 2. The idea of this book is so unique, the writing is creepily insightful and the cast if characters cleverly believable that I had to give it my best rating. This was a breath of fresh air for a fantasy, dragon loving, girl power reader. Bring on the series.
Re-read this years after it was released, a fantastic return to the serial form of writing with great cliffhangers and above all Humour!! This author is a Must for when life gets too heavy, too depressing- fictional Prozac, guaranteed to make you burst out laughing! Reading Stephanie Bond reminds me every time that great writers can sketch a character and a situation with just a couple if sentences and will have you rooting for the main characters after just a paragraph!!!
This is a very entertaining story, but I don't think it's something that I'll be reading a lot of. I got this one free to read on Amazon Prime. I don't know how much the series will cost, since it's a daily episode series. I did enjoy it and will check it out further. I don't want to give spoilers, so I'll just have to say it's different and it's well written. I do recommend it.
I really enjoyed this. I usually read darker stories and was looking for something lighter without being too fluffy and I think the Coma Girl series is going to be just that. The writing keeps the reader engaged and wanting to put the puzzle together for Marigold. I am excited to continue the series and see where these pieces fit!
