Cele trei texte fundamentale reproduse in cartea de fata - Fama Fraternitatis, Confessio Fraternitatis si Nunta chimica a lui Christian Rosencreutz - reprezinta singurele marturii directe despre Fratia Rozacrucii. In afara de aceste trei documente care au starnit polemici ce dateaza de patru secole, nu exista nici o alta marturie directa, dupa cum nu exista nici un personaj istoric din perioada aparitiei textelor care sa fi afirmat despre sine, in mod deschis, public si lipsit de orice indoiala, ca ar fi membru al Fratiei Rozacrucii.

Astfel, toti cei interesati de studiul istoriei si al misterelor acestei societati secrete trebuie sa urmeze unul dintre cele mai importante indemnuri valabile in mediul protestant in care a aparut Fratia: acela al intoarcerii la izvoare, al studierii directe a surselor scrise pe care le avem la dispozitie.

Fama fraternitatis a aparut in 1614, in orasul german Kassel. Documentul vorbeste despre o "reforma generala si universala a lumii intregi" si despre "ilustrul ordin al Rozacrucii". Aceasta societate "a imaginat un limbaj cifrat si magic, precum si un dictionar, pentru a clasifica intelepciunea lumii."

In 1615, acelasi editor din Kassel publica Confessio fraternitatis. Documentulare puternice accente milenariste si antipapale, specifice mediului protestant. Scopul publicarii acestui nou document este lamurirea unor pasaje mai obscure din Fama fraternitatis, astfel incat oamenii de stiinta sa poata intelege deplina semnificatie a textului.

Nunta chimica a lui Christian Rosencreutz a fost tiparita in 1616, la Strasbourg. Este un text alegoric, o povestire la persoana intai a experientei initiatice a lui Christian Rosencreutz (nume simbolic, ce poate fi tradus drept "crestinul trandafirului si al crucii"). Actiunea se petrece in 1459 cand, pe parcursul a sapte zile, Christian participa la nunta alchimica a regelui si a reginei, care se incheie cu moartea si invierea cuplului regal. Si in acest document, ca si in Confessio fraternitatis, alchimia este considerata un proces de regenerare spirituala si un izvor de renastere interioara, si nu o modalitate de a transforma diferite metale in aur.

Apelul facut de autorii documentelor rozacruciene catre savantii Europei timpului si-a gasit ecoul imediat, nu numai in cercurile intelectuale, dar si in cele religioase si politice din Europa vremii, aflata in preajma izbucnirii Razboiului de 30 de ani. Intr-adevar, intr-o perioada de numai 6 ani, intre 1614 si 1620, aveau sa fie publicate nu mai putin de 400 de carti in care erau discutate cele trei documente.

Johannes Valentinus Andreae a.k.a. Johannes Valentinus Andreä or Johann Valentin Andreae, was a German theologian, who claimed to be the author of the Chymische Hochzeit Christiani Rosencreutz anno 1459 (1616, Strasbourg, the Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz), one of the three founding works of Rosicrucianism.

He studied theology and natural sciences in Tübingen,obtaining a degree in 1614. He became a priest in Calw. Here he reformed the school and social institutions, and established institutions for charity and other aids. To this end, he initiated the Christliche Gottliebende Gesellschaft ("Christian God-loving Society"). In 1628 he planned a "Unio Christiana".
In 1639, he became preacher at the court and councillor of the consistory (Konsistorialrat) in Stuttgart, where he advocated a fundamental church reform. He became also a spiritual adviser to a royal princess of Württemberg. In 1650, he assumed direction of the monasterial school Bebenhausen; in 1654, he became abbot of the evangelical monasterial school of Adelberg.

His role in the origin of the Rosicrucian legend is controversial. In his autobiography he indicated the Chymische Hochzeit as one of his works—as a "ludibrium", possibly meaning "lampoon". In his later works, alchemy is the object of ridicule and is placed with music, art, theatre and astrology in the category of less serious sciences.

Guter Text der frühen Drucke, die Kommentare in den Fußnoten sind teilweise suboptimal und, wie ich fürchte, nicht immer hundertprozentig korrekt.
