“If you want to date me, all you need to do is say the word. I’d never let you go.”
I added Sage to my rugby club’s annual list of women who are off limits thinking I could protect her from the gorillas I play with. Aspen's a small town in the off season when the dating pool shrinks to the size of a melted snowflake. Never did I think I’d be the one to break the code and date her.
Even if it’s all for show. A wager between friends. An excuse to hang out with her more.
Nothing more than that. Right?
***
Who agrees to date their best friend over a green smoothie? Apparently this girl right here.
Now the man-bun-sporting South African rugby god next door is my fake boyfriend. I need to rebuild my confidence after some poor dating decisions. Who could be better to fluff my ego than Aspen’s hottest bachelor?
This situation is a win-win. Right?

USA Today Bestselling author Daisy Prescott lives in a real life Stars Hollow in the Boston suburbs with her husband and an indeterminate number of imaginary housegoats. When not writing about people falling in love, she can be found traveling, gardening, baking, and reading a good book.

Sexy and very charming!!!! Next To You is a book designed to keep you warm and cozy. An excellent weekend read that I'm sure I'll re-read more than once in the future. I wanted to play sweaty rugby with Lee, and dance, and drink green smoothies with Sage, forever...
Lee is super-model handsome, but he is also sweet and charming. His passion is to play Rugby which he does, but due to his age, he's missed his chance to play professionally. He supplements his income by bartending and modeling. Not that he needs to, coming from a wealthy family, but Lee wants to make a life for his own, and not live in the shadow of his strange father.
Sage is Lee's neighbor and best friend. The two of them always have the best time together. They hang out, and care for each other but both are a little afraid to acknowledge their deep attraction because they are scared it will ruin the friendship.
Lee had an injury while snowboarding and Sage is more than happy to look after him while he is recuperating. Having Sage so close to him every day is making Lee re-think everything about his relationship with his best friend, and now he has the perfect plan to try to take things to the next level.
Will Lee's plan work and bring him and Sage together? Or will it fizzle and ruin everything?
Looking back at all the reviews I've ever written for a Daisy Prescott book, I have compared her writing to chocolate cake and Disney world rides, noticed? Always fun and decadent. But the truth is that reading her books always bring me immense joy, like seeing a long lost best friend, that you don't always see but every time you get together, you laugh and enjoy, like no time has passed at all.
I encourage you to read this book or any Daisy Prescott book. If you are looking for quality romance writing style and a genuinely good time. THIS IS IT!!!!
Stan lives next door to Sage and they have become great friends over the past two years. They are both completely attracted to each other but are firmly in the friend zone.
After Stan gets injured one night, Sage finds herself spending more time with him than usual and a bit more up close & personal. She is not complaining though, Stan is a freaking gorgeous guy. He plays rugby, models and doesn't have to try when it comes to finding female companionship. To be honest though, fending off uninvited advances is wearing a bit thin lately so he comes up with a proposal.
Sage agrees to be his pretend girlfriend so he can ward off the unwanted advances and recuperate in peace. However, the lines get a bit blurred and they get so good at acting the part they find themselves doing it when no one is around to see it.
'I never realised how deeply she's penetrated my world. Focused on not getting close to her, not letting her in, I missed the ways she snuck inside through my cracks and weak spots.'
So are they really playing a part now or have their true feelings finally come into play?
This was a very sweet, light hearted story. If you like hot rugby players with a beard and a man bun then this book is for you!
This was just an ok read. It wasn't anything that hadn't been done before, and while I don't mind the cliches and overdone tropes, this book was boring. The character and plot needed more development in order for me to be engaged and invested in the outcome of this story.
What I liked: 1) The dual povs. 2) Friends before lovers is always preferred to ONS or just a casual hook up resulting in a relationship. I like it when the MCs know and care about each other before they pursue an amorous relationship.
What I didn't like: 1) The H. His inner monologue wasn't very endearing at times. I didn't really want to hear about how much other women loved his masculine scent or his man bun. Ick. 2) The overall plot was pretty bland.
I loved everything about this book! I have a new book boyfriend, and his name is Stan. A South African rugby player, yes please. This book was everything I needed. A friends to lovers, next door neighbors, fake relationship type. I LOVED this book. Why did it take me so long to read this! I have laughed and laughed through this whole book. The swoony bits made my stomach flutter. Stan, the man bun was everything! Sage is the perfect heroine! I am in my feels, and I don’t care who knows it!
I rounded up because Stan the Man Bun is just simply: awesome. And I adore his afrikaans commentary. Though I might be a bit biased, since I am married to a rugby playing South Africa... (no man bun, thankfully) A sweet story of friends becoming lovers. Though I wish there were more friend bits. It was kinda not enough for me. Sage is interesting, unique and likable female lead. Totally love Zoe and Sage's family But I was not a fan of the rest of the support cast. Most of of Stanley Bernard. I mean I know he is the villain, but he was too over the top for me. The romance is totally swoon-worthy - and the smut is hot It's beautifully written, great descriptions, fun banter and wonderfully sensual. Just like we have all come to expect from Prescott.
Which leave me wondering about the other novels in this multi-authors-series of standalones : Friends with Benefits Definitely going to read more soon
Pretty cute, humorous, sweet and sexy friends to lovers romance that I truly enjoyed. Daisy does her lumberjack type guys well this time Lee is a rugby player of South African descent which makes him interesting. Cultural stuff and how he grew up is very unusual. Sage is a dreamer, passionate about many things and her next door neighbor is one of them. She's a caring person when Lee gets injured and the start of bet that helped move their friendship to more.
The banter between this two is so entertaining and fun. They actually have a great foundation and that what made the transition sweeter. I enjoyed this stand alone short of Daisy's I'll check out the other installments of the friends with benefits as well.
Oh, Stan and your man-bun. Who can resist the South African accent, the rugby-athlete hotness, all wrapped up in a wounded puppy? :D I love the dual pov, it really lets you get into the heads of both characters and see where this so-called bet gets them!
You will be sucked in immediately! A PERFECT beach read!
oh my. This left me with a huge smile! Daisy Prescott took my favorite trope and made me swoon :)
Hot semi-pro rugby player Stanley Barnard lives in Aspen. When he's not on the rugby field, he is modeling for ski equipment. He lives next door to Sage. They've become best friends in the two years they've lived as neighbors, so when Stan suggests they pretend to be in a relationship to make Sage's ex jealous and to keep the women away from him, she reluctantly agrees. Why is she reluctant? Why would he suggest such a set up? Read it and find out!
There just aren't words to say how much I loved this whole book. They writing was great. The plot was perfect. The characters were relatable. This is something I can see becoming a reread for me in the future.
*thanks to Give Me Books PR for sharing this with me*
Daisy Prescott's books are crafted with a perfect blend of humor and sensual emotion. Next to You is funny and full of lots of fun banter - in fact, the witty dialogue with sexual innuendo is probably what I love most about this book. In addition, it follows the emotional journey of Stan and Sage as they move from friends to lovers. Told in alternating, dual POV, the reader gets a good, in-depth look at Sage and Stan's backgrounds, how they feel towards each other and their families and maneuver through life figuring out where they fit in being on their own in Aspen, Colorado.
Daisy knows how to write characters who are fleshed out and I always feel like I can relate to them. She is a master at penning character-rich books and knowing how the evolution of a relationship works. I laughed out loud in public reading this book and found myself smiling to myself. I rooted for the two from the start. This is a fun, quick read that I recommend taking to the beach. You will laugh, smile and love seeing these two goofballs interact with each other. They are the perfect friends who become the perfect lovers.
I look forward to more books from the author in this new world she has created! Stan is a character who was introduced in Take for Granted, a novella in Daisy's Modern Love series. Next to You is a complete standalone book in a new setting.
While I have a few books by Daisy Prescott on my tablet, this book is my first book by her. I was in the mood for a romantic comedy and it delivered. There are so many funny moments or conversations. This book put a big smile on my face.
Sage and Stan have been friends and neighbors for a couple years. Stan breaks his leg when he goes skiing with his friends. Sage, the great friend that she is, visits him, makes sure he eats and drives him around. One day, they have a bet and Stan wins. He wants a fake relationship with Sage to keep other women away. Stan has always had a crush on Sage, but he thinks that he doesn’t deserve her. Sage has a crush on Stan, but she thinks that she isn’t his type. The fake relationship feels more and more real each day.
Stan is a South African rugby player, so he’s muscular and has a sexy accent. I loved the South African words. He has a man bun, but Sage doesn’t like it. Stan values his friendship with Sage and loves to spend time with her. He always wanted more, but he’s afraid to lose her as a friend.
Sage looks like a hippy. Each week, she paints locks of hair in a new color, and Stan loves this. Sage is a sweet, caring woman and a great friend of Stan. She works hard and loves to volunteer at a ranch.
Stan and Sage are both very rich, because their fathers are successful businessmen. They don’t care about the money. They both have a job. Stan also plays rugby and Sage also volunteers. They don’t care that the other is rich. They do care about the way they feel when they are together.
This book is so much fun! It features a rugby playing, man bun wearing, bar-tending hot guy who manages to find himself in a fake relationship with his best female friend, who also happens to be his next door neighbor. Of course an injury that incapacitates Stanley (Stan) is what starts this whole charade. Sage certainly wasn't expecting taking care of Stan and a green smoothie to lead to everything that followed.
Next to You is a great romantic comedy. It's got all the elements; heat, laughter, great chemistry, etc. I loved the pace of the book. It's fast and keeps you hooked. You can't help but really like Stan and Sage and enjoy the changes in their friendship. I liked how well they knew each other and how they cared for each other.
I wouldn't mind reading about more of Stan's teammates in the future, or more about Stan and Sage.
Ho adorato Sage, me ne sono perdutamente innamorata.
A sweet friends to lover’s story, that's light and fun, without stupid drama.
Sage and Lee, or Stan, as she sometimes calls him, have been neighbors and friends for some time. But it isn't until his ankle injury that words beyond friendship, are shared. One drug induced comment, mild flirting, and some overly aggressive competition later, pushes their friendship to a new level.
Since this book picks up right where the flirting ramps up, it’s easy to see how they would be compatible. Sage and Lee have a good banter, playfully mixing up insults - his picking on her healthy lifestyle, her hatred of his Man Bun - along with small compliments about the other.
“The ladies who love it are flattering your ego by lying to your face. You’re an Instagram trend, my friend. A fad. The mullet of our generation.”
Through Sage's POV, it's obvious she is attracted to Lee, but is holding back after being burned by one of his teammates in rugby. Lee holds back because of a bad view on relationships, growing up with a thoughtless father who treated his mother poorly.
The move from friends to lovers is a bit different. First it is just an IOU, where Lee convinces Sage to "pretend date". The idea is ridiculous but innocent enough for them both to explore new feelings under the guise of living up to their fake dating. A kiss here, a touch there. It's all for show. Right? But when those kisses, touches, and other things, extend behind closed doors, is when the game changes.
The moment my lips touched her skin was the moment I waved the white flag, and surrendered.
I kept thinking, here it comes, here comes the stupid drama. And while there is some overthinking on each of their part, they actually handle things in a mature way. HOW REFRESHING! I'm not a huge fan of drama for the sake of drama, so I'm glad one comment is not taken overboard. Instead, the two lean on each other when their families add extra stress to their lives.
While I would have liked a more extended epilogue, this one is sweet, just like the story. If you are in the mood for something light and funny, look no further.

Stan, when under the influence of some good meds, and exhaustion have words just pop out of his mouth, “if you want to date me, all you need to do is say the word. I’d never let you go.” My thoughts become words as I feel myself being dragged under a wave of sleep." Stan is a grabby man, “did you squeeze my ***?” I’m still cupping it. “That answers my question. Are you going to let go?” She hasn’t jumped away. God bless whoever invented yoga pants. Reluctantly, I let go." I loved this book I loved Stan.
This was my first book by daisy Prescott, i thought it was a really sweet and cute book. I didn’t really understand the fake dating aspect of the story, and I wish it had a little more something but I’m not sure what. But my favorite part of the story was that the he was from South Africa 😍 and a rugby player. I think if it didn’t have the fake dating scenario and was just a friends to lovers it would have been a lot better, for me.
Really like this series. I read the second book first since the order doesn't matter and I'm glad I went back to this one since I was not disappointed. Very cute friends-to-more romance worth checking out!
I have loved the last three Daisy Prescott books that I've read up to this point. So, I was sure that it would be a pleasure to read this one.
Unfortunately, Next To You failed to deliver for me.
While it was packed with her trademark adorable banter between the two main characters, the one that made me fall in love with her writing, it left me wanting more in the plot deparment.
The characters were lovable, yet a little more development would have help the story. Still a cute read if you're in the mood for a friends to lovers romance.
Yes, a millions times, YES. I love Next To You. Serious, this book is my favorite type of book. First half- super giggle out loud -- I mean, get kicked out of bed because I am laughing too hard. Then the second half - oh my, such love both family and romantic.
Yes, some may say it's predictable. But even predictable reads can be good and enjoyable. This is the exact kind of "sweet" read I enjoy! I didn't even see the time passing while I read it (2 hours can fly when you're having fun).
The characters are good, the story isn't overly complicated, it's fun and romantic. I really liked reading it!
