Book Five in the best-selling young adult dystopian series, The Breeders

Riley hasn't seen her boyfriend Clay or her nine-year-old brother Ethan for two months. Between violent road gangs and ongoing clashes between the Breeders and the Free Colonies, are they even still alive? But Riley will never stop looking. Her search takes her to Kirtland Air Force Base, where she finds the remains of a battle and one glimmer of hope: rumors of the boys heading toward the Free Colonies and a man who can help her get there. The only catch? He nearly murders Riley the first time they meet.

Meanwhile, Clay, Ethan, and Betsy struggle to steer clear of bandits, thieves, and slavers. Their water is gone, along with Clay’s memory and Ethan's patience for Betsy, who only makes things worse by trying to convince Clay they're in love. With Clay's mind muddy, it’s up to Ethan to keep them alive long enough for Riley to find them.

The route back together is paved with trials—and how many more have to pay for their freedom with their lives?

Book five in the six book Breeders Series, a dystopian world where just one out of nine births are females, girls are a rarity.

The longer this series goes on the less I'm enjoying it.

I love the concept of this but it's not working out for me. Every chapter in this book is from a different perspective and as the characters have exactly the same personality it's pretty hard to know which chapter relates to who.

With just one book left I will finish but honestly this should have finished three books ago as it feels very half hearted, unedited and even the author is snoozing.

Onto book six we go, everything could be forgiven depending on how it all wraps up.

So close and yet so far

Katie French is truly on a roll with these books . The barriers is an amazing continuation of this heart pumping series.
Doc has the hots for Riley.
Riley will never stop searching for Clay.
Clay's brains are still scrambled while Ethan tries to help him remember.
Ethan struggles to take care of Clay and keep Betsy off his back.
Betsy is getting crazier as she tries to make Clay believe their boyfriend and girlfriend.
Auntie is still as tough as nails and a taking crap off nobody.
While Riley, Doc and Auntie are struggling to find Clay and Ethan they run into yet another group of doctors that pull them into their crazy experiments .
Clay Ethan and Betsy wind up prisoners of a small town leader, Mike, with a vindictive little toadie, Hank, determine to kill a group of doctors that allowed Mike's brother to die. Just as Clay starts to remember Riley he is forced to take a bomb into the compound where the doctors are in order to knock out their power so Mike can get his revenge.
After being given a task by the doctors , Riley and Doc return just as all hell breaks loose at the compound . Clay and Riley are so close to each other yet still so far since neither knows the other is there.
This book kept me up late because I absolutely had to know if our lovers would be reunited and of course, Ms. French set up the next book which I'm impatiently waiting to read.

Fabulous return of Katie French and her Breeders series . Clay and Riley are back in this exciting swashbuckling story which carries action from the first page. I love the fluency of Katies writing
and it's obvious that's she's an English teacher by her lucid dialogue. This series is a definite winner and this book only enhanced its quality. A must read for fans of post apocalyptic stories .

This is the fifth book in the Breeder series. Dystopia is different in any sci-fi I've ever read. This whole story from book one on has been quite the ride.

The characters by this book five are well rounded and though many each has a purpose. I felt myself nearly on the edge of my bed and far from sleep hoping for the best for these young people and their loved ones. There were a couple nights I had to force myself to put away the Fire at three or even four in the morning.

Thank goodness these are on Kindle Unlimited because when this book ended I could grab the next!

“The Barriers” is the fifth and second to last full instalment in Katie French’s YA/NA dystopian series “Breeders”, which is set in a future version of the US at the end of the twenty first century, in world where women account just for 10% of the total population. The main character (Riley Meemick) is one of the last free surviving females, as her own mother escaped the Breeders, the group of scientist intended on ‘fixing’ the male/female ration discordance and repopulate society by very unethical and cruel methods.

This story takes places two months after the events of Book 3 (while Book 4 starts with Riley looking for Riley and Ethan, it changes perspective to tell the backstory of Janine, Riley’s mother). Riley is still looking for both her brother and her boyfriend, fearing for their lives in the violence ridden country. As she arrives at Kirtland Air Force Base, she gets some hopeful news about their whereabouts. Apparently, they are trying to reach the Free Colonies, and there is even someone who could help her to get there herself, if she manages not to let him kill her first . We also learn how the boys are faring in their journey to freedom.

This is very well-written series, with credible and relatable characters, and an exceptionally complex, realistic dystopian world, that is nevertheless easy to follow. The arc-story is action-packed in fast-paced, with very interesting plots and subplots, unexpected twist and turns, and good balanced mix between character development, action, dystopia, and romance. An interesting read for all fans of “The Hunger Games”, “Divergent”, “The Gender Game” and “The Thaw Series”.

Dystopian Treasure

This series keeps me reading. I'm already anticipating the next book. I love how attached I've become to the characters and how the author conveys their inner struggles to reveal their personalities. The anticipation of the climax is one of my favorite parts and the author does a great job of building the plot to reach that point. Getting the next book now so I can continue with the saga.

Barriers

This was a good continuation of the series. So many barriers keeping them apart. The reunion was a little anti climatic with no questions about his memory or her shaved head or loss of baby. Just kinda drops off.

Kind of over this series at this point. It's become predictable what will happen between Clay and Riley. Going to try to slog through the last book in the series.

This is my second go-around...

I have read this particular book once before, but it's been a long while. And many, many books ago!
However, it is an astounding and unforgettable book! I just wanted to be absolutely sure of all the facets of the story as I go into the final "Breeders" series book. I have completely and wholeheartedly LOVED every story in this series, as well as every single Katie French series and the standalone books she has written! I have been a long time lover of everything written by this wonderful author! And when I found out that the last book in the Breeders series was/had been written I was ecstatic! But I had to regain my footing in the story as to not be lost at any point. And it was, as before- a fabulous high adrenaline trip throughout! Katie French is THAT going - to the author that just never gets boring. A true master of the pen! Don't ever miss anything that is written by this incredible woman!

Like the series

Well, Im stuck on this series even though it's a but "out there." But then again, it's dystopian genre and I like the characters....I'm officially invested on what's going to happen next!
This particular book took the next step into "far out." Enjoyed the action and the surprise, though! Love Clay and Riley and hoping for them!
If you like futuristic science fiction, you'll enjoy this series.

Barriers: Breeders BK 5

As always, the book is a mile a minute adventure with all the post apocalyptic whistles being blown. The characters are richly developed and now feel like old friends, ones your afraid to be attached to for fear that they won't survive.
