Exciting new children’s picture book author Chris Stead delivers his sixth book, and for the child who loves both their animals and their arts and crafts, it’s an absolute delight. Designed to help with early reading requirements, it also features original and incredibly unique hand-drawn art.

On a little island a young inventor is creating all kinds of crazy things, but the loud noise he makes in his tiny house has scared everyone else to the mainland. Lonely, he decides to use the rubbish washed up on the beach to build his own animal friends. When a freak storm hits the island a bolt of lightning strikes his animal inventions bringing them all to life. The result is a very strange zoo that all his old friends are desperate to come and see.

Like all Stead’s books, A Very Strange Zoo uses an interactive text delivery system that helps parents meet their child’s early reading needs by working to school syllabus requirements - readers are encouraged to determine the outcome of each page prior to bringing up the text.

This is a very cute and creative book. On an island faraway lives an inventor. He was so noisy that all of the other people who lived on the island moved away. He became very lonely. As he walked along the shore he saw a lot of garbage that had floated in. One item in particular sparked his imaginations. It was a book about zoos. How could this young inventor solve his problem, clean up his island and start inventing again. The drawings are wonderful. For me the idea of having a conversation with my grandkids about what they can create our of junk lying around is more valuable to me because it causes children to use their imagination, which is something I see as a middle school teacher that many of my students don’t know how to use.

I liked this guy, his imagination and creative mind knew no bounds, his downfall, sad as it may be, was that he got so caught up in himself he failed to realize he had run his friends away. The continuous loud noises from his home had caused a lot of dissatisfaction and headaches among his friends, causing them to move away from him. Now, all alone and quite lonely, his creative mind came to his rescue. A quirky, amusing, and fun read although, I believe the book cover and illustrations could do with some color.

Another island of misfit toys.

Indie offering. Suitable for all ages. Good color artwork. The story of an inventor. Basically similar to the island of misfit toys, but a zoo?

Great story about creativity and uniqueness

"A lonely inventor living on an island just wants some company. When he finds scraps of rubbish that have drifted on his island, he begins to create zoo animals. In a Frankenstein-like event, the animals come alive and stir up the island.

This story shares an experience of being the 'odd-one-out', and perhaps your young one might have his or her own share of it. But sticking to what we love most allows us to discover ourselves, and how people can come to appreciate it.

The funny animal characters have charming qualities that can definitely make your child giggle. Perfect bedtime story you can share with your kids on opening their creativity and uniqueness
