Basic training is a killer—in more ways than one.
USA Today bestselling author Katherine Deane brings you a romantic suspense that will leave you gasping.
Twenty-four year old journalist Smyth McCullen is following the trail of a killer, right onto Fort Hancock Army training center. After two murders of young women just out of basic, both under the same drill sergeant, Smyth knows she must join the Army to unravel the truth.
Little does she know that Basic is dangerous in more ways than one. Protecting her battle buddy, working through sixteen hours of grueling training a day, and following a potential bad guy, is nothing compared to falling for a dominant, undercover drill sergeant.
Hunter Jones is undercover, looking into the potential murders under Drill Sergeant Cage’s direction. He’s been through many deployments, both public, and some not so public. He’s interrogated bad guys, fallen behind enemy lines, and is prepared in every way to act as a drill sergeant and save another potential victim. What he’s not prepared for is the sexy, young strawberry blonde who is definitely not eighteen.
As their attraction grows, they march one step closer to the end of the session, and imminent danger. Can Smyth find the killer in time? Can Hunter protect the next target, especially if it’s Smyth?

CATCHING A KILLER

I really enjoyed this military mystery-suspense story. As a fan of Katherine Deane’s writing, I honestly feel this is her best work yet. The story kept me on the edge of my seat as not one, but two different people are trying to uncover who is killing female soldiers, and why. Smyth McCullan joins the Army and has the right pull with her job to help get her into the exact platoon, having a particular Drill Sergeant that she suspects as the killer. Talk about dedication to her job as a journalist, her sister whose best friend was one of the victims, and the girl’s parents to commit to three years of military service. Posing as Drill Sergeant Hunter Jones, he is undercover with Military Intelligence to catch a killer, and hopefully before another life is snuffed out. Two people, both hiding secrets, both drawn to one another, one dominant and the other submissive, they become a team, a couple, and a force to be reckoned with.

The plot of this story had me hooked and the pages turning from the beginning to the end. The chemistry between Smyth and Hunter is evident in their interaction both while in training and in secret. The buildup of their secret rendezvous adds to their passion, whether it is him watching her, quietly chastising her or disciplining her. His dominance allows her to submit and experience the discipline she craves at his hand.

The plot twists keep me in suspense as this duo works to expose a killer without alerting others to their plan. Secrets, hotel meetings, indulgent into D/s relationship, nefarious plans, delusional characters, mystery and suspense with a taste of life during basic training, and the comradery of the trainees as they learn to become soldiers.

I was asked to read and review Her Drill Sergeant Dom: A Military Romance, and give it an honest review. Normally when a BDSM book has nothing but spanking I get a bit bored, but I will admit this one got pretty hot, then there was just the entire alpha presence of Hunter!

“Take me in your mouth now, Private, and suck hard, or I will find a different way to punish your ass.”

Oh boy was that part hot! Hunter was pretty damn yummy and then hello the name Hunter? Can you get any sexier than that?

Smyth was a pretty bad ass chick herself; who wasn’t a weak or submissive, she just likes her sex the way she likes her sex. I appreciate the way Deane shows that woman can be strong in the career aspect of their lives, yet still turn soft and want a man around for comfort and protection. It doesn’t make a woman any less in this day and age.

“…deep down inside, there was something pretty damn sexy about a man who would fight to his death to protect you.”

This story is more than just spanking and sex, I was also pretty captivated with the entire backstory; Smyth and Hunter both out to catch the same killer. It is a mystery, and I had no Idea who the bad guy was until it was revealed at the end. Overall, it was pretty darn hot and entertaining; it’s getting four Boundless Stars....Sara

Katherine Deane is a new name to me, but I'll say this, I'm definitely a new fan. I plan on reading another one of her books just as soon as I can. There was plenty of passion, a suspenseful story with an ending I didn't see coming, and some laughs as well. All the ingredients of a great book.

Smyth McCullen is a journalist who decides to enlist in the Army National Guard so she can investigate the deaths of her little sister's best friend and another woman shortly after they graduate from boot camp. She has a suspect in mind.

When she gets there she meets sexy drill sergeant Hunter Jones, who takes a special interest in her. She also befriends a southern beauty queen and helps her out. As she gets closer to Hunter, she learns there is a price for disobeying him. Hunter and Smyth steal as much forbidden time together as they can, but the closer graduation looms, the less time they have to catch a killer!

You really have to pick up a copy of this book, I devoured this all in one sitting. Absolutely brilliant!

Sexy military suspense

I loved this steamy military suspense novel. Our hero Hunter is one seriously hot alpha drill sergeant trying desperately to keep his hands of his Private whilst stopping a serial killer. Hot sex, spanking, violence and a HEA make this one super steamy read. Recommended to lovers of Erotic fiction.

I received a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review and here it is: 3 stars.

Smyth McCullen is an up and coming reporter for a magazine. When her younger sister's best friend, Sophie, dies under mysterious circumstances shortly after completing basic training at Fort Hancock, Smyth decides to go undercover, enlist in the Army to investigate her death, and write it up for the magazine, and she convinces her editor/boss to pull some strings to have her assigned to the same unit, First Platoon, Alpha Company. She also learns that Sophie was not the only victim, there was another female recruit who also died, and both women had the same head drill sergeant, James Cage, whom she spots almost as soon as she gets off the bus, an imposing and dangerously handsome man. She also soon sets her eyes upon Drill Sergeant Hunter Jones, to whom she is far more attracted and who instantly becomes the subject of her secret fantasy kink--spanking. What she doesn't know is that Hunter Jones is also on base undercover, investigating the two deaths for Military Intelligence. He too suspects Cage, and is similarly attracted to Smyth, while immediately doubting her given age and reason for being there. What follows is a well-written, highly readable murder mystery with many twists and turns, as well as an erotic novel that features a number of hot spanking scenes.

The novel, while an easy, enjoyable and spicy read has a number of issues. First, Smyth actually enlists in the army for 3 years under false pretenses, lying about her age, place of birth, etc.--quite a self-sacrificing commitment for a journalist following a story merely because her sister was saddened by the death of a friend. Second, most of what is portrayed as standard military procedure in this novel was not sufficiently researched and is incorrect. Third, if Hunter is working undercover for Military Intelligence, he too breaks protocol by admitting it to Smyth.

Although billed as romantic suspense, there's plenty of suspense and not a lot of romance, but there is a lot of spanking. I liked these characters, but wished that we were given more of Hunter's backstory. Is he truly a Dom or merely acquiescing to Smyth's desires? As someone who's read many BDSM novels, Hunter is a bit too accommodating and not terribly adventurous as a true Dom. At no point is Smyth ever restrained, nor does Hunter really push her limits or try anything other than what Smyth wants, which, in the BDSM lifestyle is considered topping from below, and something a true Dom wouldn't permit.

This is the first novel I've read by Katherine Deane, and she clearly has skills as a writer, but this novel really stretched my willing suspension of disbelief pretty far, and I hope she does a bit more research in future novels.

If you like your erotica with a generous helping of rosy buns, then I think you will like Her Drill Sergeant Dom, by Katherine Deane.

To be honest, spanking is not my thing, but I do enjoy a good military story with a capable alpa male. I also insist on a decent plot in the romances I read, no matter the level of steaminess involved. This book delivers on both counts.

Smyth McCallum is a young reporter who is intent on getting to the bottom of the death of her sister's best friend, right after she finished Basic Training for the Army, as well as a similar death a year earlier. She is so determined to solve the mystery of these female recruits' deaths, that she enlists for a three year tour of duty.

Drill Sergeant Hunter Jones may not be what he seems. He's too handsome for his own good - or would that be too handsome for Smyth's own good? Or, could the drill sergeant with the dimples be a killer?

Smyth has eight weeks of hell to find the answer, and to decide if she can trust Drill Sergeant Jones with her butt, her heart, and her life.

This book has all the good elements - action, touches of well-timed humor, romance that is heavily laced with genuine-feeling affection, tough, handsome military guys, and likeable characters. And spanking. Mustn't forget the spanking.

The reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5, is because although I understand the author is using the services of a different copy editor, she needs to continue looking for someone who can do a better job. There are some continuity and grammar issues that should have been caught, as well as an incomplete table of contents. I AM a bit of a grammar nazi though, and things like that tend to bother me more than they might other people, so they may not be overly noticeable to you. And, it wasn't bad enough to make me give up on the story.

Full disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the author in return for a fair and unbiased review.

This was an amazing story. I absolutely loved it. The storyline was so intense with many twists and turns, every time I thought I knew who the bad guy was it twisted and changed. What a fast paced suspense thriller. The action was so exciting my heart was pounding and I couldn't put it down until it finished. The sex was hot, the spanking was erotic fun except when for discipline. The romance was sweet. I highly recommend this book.

This book was absolutely amazing. It was intense, heartbreaking, HOT & intimidating to say the least. Smythe was one lucky woman to find Hunter if all things while going through Basic. He is definitely totally Alpha/Dom in all things, and what woman wouldn't like that. This story had twists at every turn, that I didn't see coming. The ending was priceless.

Loved the story line, loved the characters. This followed basic training pretty spot on. I thought Smyth was so tough, smart, daring and so caring and Hunter was a typical alpha male. So glad that they hooked up and everything worked out.
