With a thriving parahuman accounting practice, a steady relationship, and a circle of trusted friends, Fred's undead life has become more enjoyable than his normal one ever was. Unfortunately, it also seems that he's no longer the only vampire to appreciate the up-and-coming city of Winslow, Colorado. A new clan of vampires is moving in, and they aren't well known for tolerating outsiders in their territory. Now, Fred must cope with the growing presence--and threat--of other vampires even as he struggles to keep up with his business's demands and make time for his friends. Between hidden parahuman towns, crazed vampire hunters, quarreling mages, and the world's least subtle spy, it will take all of Fred's wiles just to keep his head above water. And as the new clan sinks their fangs deeper and deeper into his city, the undead accountant is faced with a choice between two equally unappealing options: flee his home, or stand against an entire clan of fellow vampires.

The best Fred yet. The plotting and writing have grown in fluidity since the first volume, which is a pleasure to behold. I give this five stars, not because it's the world's greatest literature, but because it is so much fun, and sometimes fun is what you need. It's also hopeful, because Fred is all about playing fair, and being kind and thoughtful, and working outside the box, and stories about a kind, thoughtful, loving nerd (or do I mean geek?) who remains himself while having adventures in a world of ruthless monsters is intrinsically hopeful.
Sorry, Mr. Hayes, that last sentence makes your hilariously entertaining book sound terribly worthy. It is actually very funny. The eponymous accountant (who also happens to be the world's most un-threatening vampire) stumbles into all sorts of amusing encounters, from a vampire hunter to a whole clan of vampires who want him to be other than he is, via a legacy dispute between mages. After many, many stories about improbably gifted swordsmen, assassins, and magicians, enjoyable as they are (and I include Mr. Hayes' own Super Powered series), a story about someone who's really good at accounting is refreshing.

I confess myself surprised. This being the third foray into this world Drew Hayes could've just cruised on autopilot and I'm sure I would've been suitably entertained, however he chooses to go deeper. This installment explores the widening or deepening of Fred's character: who is he when it matters? what is it to really be brave? the nature of chosen family etc. and he approaches these themes with humor and generosity of spirit.

I'm delighted to have been derailed by this series, and the narration by Kirby Heyborne continues to be perfect.

Review:
This was yet another sweet, light, funny, enjoyable audiobook in the Fred series. It's getting harder for me to review them though since I've liked the same things every time. Fred is definitely a unique, atypical sort of vampire, but that's what makes him so likeable. The found family aspect is great too. I also thought it was neat getting to see a vampire hunter from a vampire's perspective. There are lots of books/movies/shows in which hunters just go around killing any creature they find, but just because someone is paranormal, that doesn't means they're a monster. Oh, also, I would totally read a book about Arch. Anyone who can sit at a table pointing a gun at hostile vampires with one hand and casually eat his meal with the other is someone I want to know more about lol. Anyway, these are not the most action-packed or gripping books out there, but they're definitely enjoyable to listen to!

This was the best entry yet. I like it when smart characters behave intelligently, and the humble Fred the vampire accountant is all about brains rather than brawn. This time around each section remains distinct but they feel more episodic and less like shared-world short stories. I’m surprised no one has turned this into a TV series yet. John Hodgman would be perfect as Fred.

These books are strong entries into “cozy fantasy”, where the entire world (or kingdom, or country) isn’t at stake.

The audiobook narration by Kirby Heyborne is excellent as well.

The continuing adventures of Fred the Vampire Accountant are anything but uninteresting. Fred now has to deal with the fact that a vampire clan has moved into his hometown and are dead set on recruiting him. Fred has difficulty with the idea of being forced to answer to be a bunch of preening sociopaths and looks for a loophole to get him out. He also faces his first vampire hunter that is determined to destroy such an evil monster [as Fred must be since no vampire could be so inoffensive].

I had a lot of fun with this book and it nicely expanded on Fred's adventures while also moving his character forward. These are harmless adventures and mostly on the PG side of things--which is a nice contrast to many other books set in the urban fantasy genre. Fred could use a bit more edge but that would defeat the purpose, wouldn't it? I've already picked up the 4th novel and intend to finish the series. It's just solid entertainment and a good afternoon (after midnight?) read.

Two fangs out.

“Bloody Acquisitions’ by Drew Hayes is book three in the Fred the Vampire Accountant series. As usual, the fantasy novel begins in such a way that I feel it is aimed at very young teens or sensitive readers as the target readership. But soon I am sucked inevitably into deadly dramas, wondering with each chapter and new short story, all interconnected, how in the world is Fred going to get out of this horrific life-and-death scenario? For an “utterly uninteresting and unadventurous vampire nerd,” (start here, book one - The Utterly Uninteresting and Unadventurous Tales of Fred, the Vampire Accountant) Fred is dragged into scrapes by his friends, frenemies and bad guys which somehow showcase his heroism and self-sacrifice.

I have copied the book blurb:

“The third book in Drew's outrageously adventurous and satirical series, including THE UTTERLY UNINTERESTING AND UNADVENTUROUS TALES OF FRED, THE VAMPIRE ACCOUNTANT (Book 1) and UNDEATH & TAXES (Book 2).

With a thriving parahuman accounting practice, a steady relationship, and a circle of trusted friends, Fred’s undead life has become more enjoyable than his normal one ever was. Unfortunately, it also seems that he’s no longer the only vampire to appreciate the up-and-coming city of Winslow, Colorado. A new clan of vampires is moving in, and they aren’t well known for tolerating outsiders in their territory.

Now, Fred must cope with the growing presence—and threat—of other vampires even as he struggles to keep up with his business’s demands and make time for his friends. Between hidden parahuman towns, crazed vampire hunters, quarreling mages, and the world’s least subtle spy, it will take all of Fred’s wiles just to keep his head above water. And as the new clan sinks their fangs deeper and deeper into his city, the undead accountant is faced with a choice between two equally unappealing options: flee his home, or stand against an entire clan of fellow vampires.”

Fred lives in an alternate universe where creatures such as vampires, were-animals, zombies, mages and dragons exist. They not only helped in the formation of the United States, they agreed to abide by rules developed by The Agency, sort of a CIA that manages the paranormals. If they don’t behave and keep themselves secret from the rest of humanity, then the use of silver controls their behaviors, among other weapons. However, the paranormals have their own societies and rules. None of the paranormal types get along well with the other types, either, so they tend to avoid the different types of paranormals, living within their own circles or packs. With all of this natural antagonism, as well as for some, their urges for being the boss, stuff happens.

Fred often finds himself in the middle! While he is a shy self-effacing nerd, he has friends in all the main paranormal gangs! This is unheard of, but it means he acts as an unofficial referee and judge quite a bit, only with the addendum his failure to choose correctly could mean deaths, including his own. Circumstances also often put him in the center of someone else’s mayhem! However, in this book the greatest danger Fred faces is because he is an abandoned vampire (his sire never trained him after making him a vampire, having left him to wake by himself alone without any guidance). Fred learns abandoned vampires are in great danger from vampire packs. To be safe, he either has to join a pack or risk being torn apart because of territorial authority fears.

The packs have different social rules they enforce, many of which Fred doesn’t like, and some are really abusive and mean. One such abusive and mean vampire pack has moved into Fred’s new hometown, and they have given him the ultimatum of either joining their pack or they will kill him, unless he runs out of town. How is he going to solve this problem?

I highly recommend this lovely series! While there is murderous violence, Fred tries to turn all of the paranormal wars into truces, often doing so in mindblowing ways!

Maybe not a 5 star book, but it hits me where I live
...And where I live is right in the feels. This series is sappy and sentimental and believes in decency and goodness. I love it to pieces. I love to see a good guy win. Not with force of arms but with the force of conviction.
And it's so much fun.

My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.

Once again, we are back in the world of Fred, the Vampire Accountant. This series continues to be a lot of fun as Fred and his gang of friends go through his utterly interesting and adventurous tales. In this series, each book has five shorter stories that all come together to tell a larger story about Fred.

A Hunter in the Streets
In this story, Fred meets up with a vampire hunter and the first vampire, besides his creator, that Fred has ever met. He learns that he is quite infamous amongst the other vampires.

A Sheriff in the Country
In this story, Fred and the gang travel outside of Winslow, Colorado to Boarback, Texas. Borback is a small town that isn’t well known to humans. In this town, paranormals live out in the open. Many live there because they can’t live anywhere else without exposing themselves. It was really interesting seeing all of these other creatures of legend.

A Lawyer in the Mansion
Here, Fred is invited by an old friend, which we met in an earlier book, who needs help settling a dispute between two siblings. Their father had died and the estate was to be divided amongst the two. However, figuring out the even distribution was difficult. The siblings couldn’t get along, so Fred was called in to do his accountant thing to assess the value of everything, including the business.

A Spy in the Company
There are new vampires in town and they offer one of their clan to Fred as a “gift”. She works as his intern for a while. Fred doesn’t want her to like the job, so he takes her on what he thinks will be very boring cases, but nothing around Fred is ever boring.

An Accountant in the City
This one was my favorite. The new vampires want to takeover the city. Fred, being a single vampire and not involved with a vampire family, is at a disadvantage. I loved watching Fred flex his muscles as on he can.

This series continues to be a very fun series. I love spending time with Fred. He is such a nice guy and doesn’t want to hurt anyone. Just wants to live his life and keep himself and his friends safe. Oh, and he wants to grow his business. Business is very important to Fred, but not in a greedy way. Fred would never be so rude as to be greedy. To learn more about this series and the author, check out this great interview with Drew Hayes from The Reading Frenzy.

Narration
Kirby Heyborne continues to do a great job with narration of the series. He has a very calm voice that really portrays Fred to a tea. When I listened to book one, I wasn’t in love with his women’s voices, but I think they have gotten a lot better or I’ve gotten used to them. I can’t imagine anyone else being the voice of Fred or anyone else in the gang.

Bloody Acquisitions by Drew Hayes is a fantastic sequel. Each book in this series just keeps getting better and better. The narrator for the audiobook does a fantastic job of bringing the characters and their world to life. If you haven't started this series yet I can't recommend it enough. I'm so glad I can jump into book four, The Fangs of Freelance.

Another great entry in this brilliant urban fantasy series!

Really enjoying this and how much the world, characters, and stakes grow with each entry. It’s a very bingeable series, but I’m taking my time working my way through it. It has really stepped up in how it is interweaving the expansion with the character-driven story, and while there are still some funny bits, it no longer feels like comedy fantasy. I love that there are so many callbacks to the first two, and a lot of things come full circle - or expand into entirely new circles!

Fred is a brilliant protagonist, and the eclectic cast of para-humans that both ally with him and conflict with him makes it a very fun series!

The dramatised graphic audio is once again fantastic and kept my attention throughout. Really great easy listening and the perfect palette cleanser!

I am surprised that I like this series so much. It usually starts off pretty slow with not much happening. Not much action. I started this book thinking it was just okay. Then I slowly get into it more and more. I can kind of see where the story is going but it is still interesting listening to it unfold. I still don't like Crystal very much. She just rubs me the wrong way. Demanding to know everything about Fred's life but hiding things from him that will definitely affect him. Still an enjoyable read.

Wow

I didn't think it could get better after reading the first 2 of this series, but drew has done it again. He has written a book that no matter how hard I tried I could not put it down, every page begging to be turned. Drew has created a slew of characters everybody can relate to. It is thrilling and laugh out loud funny. I hope there is another book to come.

This series keeps getting better and better. I absolutely loved this! This series is so much fun and I have the best time reading it. I love how expansive the universe is and the new lore that was introduced in this book. It makes me so excited to see what's going to happen in the next book.

I've always had an issue with how Krystal, practically the only female character, was described, even though I like her. (My issue isn't with her specifically, but more her description given that there weren't any other, non-sexualized, female characters.) I am so happy that this book established and introduced 2 other unique and interesting female characters. They're still conventionally attractive, but I feel like that's pretty normal for books so, even though it might be problematic, I'm not that bothered. I'm so excited that Asha is probably going to be a more regular character and I loved Lillian from her introduction.

I'm waiting for the next book to come in from the library and will be reading it as soon as I have access.

M&A & valuation, the vamp style. Or, the way of the magical acquisitions.

Q:
“Colin, please listen to me, you’re making a big mistake. I get that you hate vampires, I really do, and I don’t know what you’ve had to do to survive before this, but what you’re doing right now is murder. Beyond that, it’s stepping into a world you really don’t want to be a part of. Please, go turn yourself into the cops, do your time for the car theft and the gas station shooting, and then go on to live a normal life.”
“That’s a unique way to plead for your life, I’ll give you that,” (c)
Q:
I’ll bore the House of Turva out of any interest in me. (c)
Q:
Lillian was going to accompany me on boring client visits and assessments until she either quit or I ran out of dull situations to shove her in. (c)
Q:
“What can I say? I was left without a clan.”... “I didn’t get a ready-made family, or a template for who I was supposed to hate, so I ended up making friends with anyone I got along with, regardless of their parahuman traits.” (c)
Q:
Perhaps you’d care for another few drops of blood?”
“Thanks, but no thanks. Your power is way too potent for me to handle. I kept snapping things in half for a week last time I got a drop.” I hadn’t meant it as a joke, but I caught site of Gideon snickering anyway. (c)
Q:
“Who do you think you’re dating? I’ve got my ear to the ground about everything that even thinks it might have fangs right now. And yes, that includes your Hail Mary with Asha, too. I’m fucking air, Freddy. I’m everywhere.” (c)

I thought the first couple stories were alright and probably good for the fans of the series. The last few were great by any standard.

Who can’t love a vampire that just wants to live a boring life running a small business?

A little predictable, but still fun | I listened to 85% of this during a long drive, and then arrived and forgot I hadn't finished it, which is not really a great sign. It was just so clear what the eventual resolution was going to be that it started to feel tedious how long it was taking to get there. That said, I continue to enjoy the series, especially the voice acting, and I'll be listening to the next entry on my long drive back home next week. This just wasn't the peak of the series, which is pretty common for a book 3, so no harm.

I AM DEVOURING THIS SERIES AND I DID NOT EXPECT THAT WHATSOEVER.

I am telling you this, dear reader, that Fred, the Vampire Accountant has quickly become one of my FAVORITE series of all time, ever. The fact that I almost DNFed the first books makes it hilarious, but it's true. These characters consistently are amazing, the new characters that come in make their mark almost immediately. I was basically crying on my way home from work while listening to the end of this book specifically. Like nearly full on sobbing. I adore these people, and the way they care for one another. It's a beautiful sight to behold.

As I always say, it's hard to leave full reviews for later entries in series when I try so hard to leave spoiler-free reviews. As such, I can really only say that this was another great entry, with some great moments from the cast, especially as this seems to be where we get beyond the introductory phase. We finish meeting everyone here and it feels like we also get the last of the setup for the world building that we'll be seeing for a while. The pieces are in place by the end of the book and now it's time to see what this band of parahuman misfits can do. I look forward to what comes in book 4 and beyond.

This series is easily one of my favorites and one I know to reach for when I can't decide what to read. Drew Hayes knows how to write enjoyable characters and a cozy story in general. That being said, this is the first in the series I've rated only 4 stars. The book seemed short? In a sense. I think the story could have been fleshed out a little more, and I wasn't expecting the book to end when it did. Not that the ending was a cliffhanger or anything, I just expected more to come. The prior book in the series consisted of several stories that were connected but still clearly separate plots. Perhaps since I read that one only a month or so before this one, that's why this one felt off to me. Ultimately, I still really enjoyed the story, and I can't wait to continue the series!
