What a beautiful and heartwarming read Her Hopes and Dreams turned out to be. I really enjoyed watching Carrie and Noah's relationship develop. I was touched with their story and I found myself reading it late into the night as I didn't want to put down.
The Ardent Springs series has been such a wonderful read, each book can be read as a standalone and I highly recommend them all.
Carrie survived a relationship with a violent and abusive husband. She lives a simple life in a single-wide trailer on a small parcel of land she was able to buy. She has her job working for a local construction company, a few close friends and her daughter. She doesn't need or want anything more.
Noah survived the violence of war. His wounds are in his mind. In his memories of war. He suffers from anxiety, panic attacks, struggles with crowds and sleep. He has moved into the ramshackle farmhouse next to Carrie's single-wide wishing for nothing more than to live the life of a hermit.
But somehow, despite their issues, despite all the reasons a relationship is a bad idea, they take the first tentative steps towards a relationship. But it's a long way from a sure bet.
Terri Osburn writes some of the best contemporary romance around. Her stories are light and whimsical, not particularly challenging but entertaining from start to finish. Once you pick up one of her books it really is hard to put it down all the way to the very last page. And this book is no exception.
I do however have a couple of problems with the book, and it's not the story. I loved that.
First of all, the cover. Covers sell books. I find it really difficult looking at this cover. It feels dated before the book is even released.
And my other issue is the synopsis. I read that and I'm kind of wondering if we're talking about the same book.
Terri Osburn’s Ardent Springs series has covered some difficult subjects in a light contemporary format; however she goes just a little bit darker in the latest release, Her Hopes and Dreams. Spousal abuse, PTSD and even the challenges of single-parenting push the storyline into some less romantic places; but even so this love story of second chances is full of charm.
The book begins with an awkward reunion between new neighbors Carrie Farmer and Noah Winchester. Noah remembers Carrie as a scheming flirt who cheated on her first husband and manipulated his good friend Patch Farmer into an unwanted second marriage. Carrie knows she’s not without sin but she’s more than paid for her mistakes, having had to live with Patch’s abuse right up until his death. It’s Noah’s curiosity about Carrie’s daughter that bridges the divide between them and the pair soon begin bonding over how they’ve both survived traumas to come out on the other side.
There is an overall feeling of realism to the novel, even though it follows a very fast pace towards both characters healing and falling in love. Noah and Carrie are allowed to be flawed, to be angry and to make understandable mistakes over the course of their relationship. People who have lived through traumatic events will sometimes try to justify why they were ever a part of that suffering and both characters perhaps hang onto those feelings a bit too long; however it doesn’t prevent them from trying to hold onto the happiness they find in each other’s arms.
I don’t usually pick up small town romances but I’ve enjoyed each of the Ardent Springs books enough to keep coming back to this plucky little town for all the community and love the characters share.
Sweet small town romance between a military veteran with PTSD and a once abused widowed mother of a pre-toddler.
When Carrie met Noah they did not hit off and his gruff very rude comments were not appreciated by her. When he sees her again in the office where he will interview for a job things do not improve. They begin to improve as they gradually reveal more about themselves to one another as neighbor and on the job. Preconceptions are shattered and true interest and courtship takes place. Noah is enamored with both Carrie and her daughter, Molly, and does what he can to improve their lives while his life improves by being with them.
This book deals with current and rather heavy topics that include: single parenting, domestic abuse, PTSD, cheating on a spouse and the loss of a child. The issues were dealt with well and with compassion.
I did not understand how Carrie managed to be friends with her ex-husband and the woman he married in this book and think that had I read the previous books in the series I might have understood this and also some of the dynamics between other characters mentioned. That said - back stories and reading of the previous books was not necessary to fully understand this novel.
This is my first book by this author and I will look for other books by her in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake Romance for the ARC of this novel. This is my honest review.
This book moved me. The 4th book in Ardent Aprings. Carrie was a widow and a mother. The last thing she expected was a man who was friends with her ex-husband. They didn't get along from the very minute she heard the loud noise coming from his garage. They had it out. But he wanted to see Patch's little girl. Carrie wasn't sure that was such a great idea. Noah Winchester hadn't even liked her.
Carrie and Noah had more things in common then they knew. The minute he met little Molly he was drawn to her. They all spent a lot of time together, and he was working on the shelter which was important to her. When Noah found out her demons he let his out. It wasn't easy.
Highly recommend.
An ARC copy was given to me via NetGalley from The publisher.
My favorite book of this series besides the first as they are tied.
This is my other favorite book of this series. With everything that Carrie had been through she deserved this happy ever after and I fell in love with Noah. If you are looking for a book that has ups and downs and fights through them then this is the book for you to read. Carrie has been abused most of her life, and Noah was battling scars of his own from coming home from the war. Even though she was his best friends wife he didn't know the he'll she lived with until someone saved her and he died. He thought of her as a bad person until he got to know her and then they fell in love. It is an awesome love story. Get your copy today
I received an e-book copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway. I really enjoyed the story. Two people suffering from PTSD; brought on by different situations, find themselves drawn to each other. One is a former soldier, the other a formerly abused, single mother of an infant. The character development was good and the story itself was told in a effortless flow. The setting of small-town America; Ardent Springs, Tennessee, is a wonderful backdrop for the story. I liked how the author wove the symptoms/results of PTSD into the story along with showcasing the need, even in a small town, for a safe shelter for victims of domestic abuse and getting Vets the help they need in a timely manner. All-in-all a well crafted story that makes me want to read the other stories into the series.
I think this is my favorite Ardent Springs book yet. In Her Hopes and Dreams, Terri Osburn respectfully captures two very real and often difficult topics to discuss; domestic violence and post traumatic stress disorder. Kerri Farmer suffered through many years of domestic abuse but, with the help from her friends she managed to break free and is trying to pay it forward by opening Ardent Spring's first women's shelter. Noah Winchester is a war vet. He is broken and haunted by the things he saw and heard. He was hoping his childhood summer home would provide him some peace. Unfortunately, life threw him the widow of his childhood friend and his child. I love how well Kerri's growth shines in this book. She knows what she wants and doesn't let anything stand in her way. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of this series.
I don't know which I love more, Terri Osburn's writing or Ardent Springs. This series gets better each book.
When we first meet Carrie in the previous books she was a bruised and battered woman dealing with a crazy husband- who dies! In her own book, Carrie getting stronger, raising her daughter, being friends with not only her ex but his new wife and her family makes for a great story. Add to that mix the sexy Noah Winchester being Carrie's neighbor and coming along with his own bag of PTSD and ignorance of the type of relationship Carrie had with his former friend, and Carrie is in for bumpy road down the path to her hopes and dreams.
I think this novel contains one of the sweetest scenes I have ever read in a book with baby Mollie and Nowuh. I won't give anything away, but this novel is a must read and this scene is an extra bonus!
This series takes place in Tennessee- I live in East Tennessee- so I specifically enjoy the references to the locations, scenery, etc. Gatlinburg is an hour away and usually a Saturday day trip for us so it was sweet Lorelei and Spencer honeymoon there!!
I loved this story. These characters were so real with hopes, dreams, flaws and issues but people you want to see find the happiness they deserve. I enjoyed watching as Carrie and Noah's relationship changed from adversarial to loving. It was a slow believable turn as they got to know each other working on a project Carrie is very passionate about. The way the author dealt with the issues of PTSD and domestic abuse is commendable. Both are tough issues but she dealt with each with compassion and showed that both can be dealt with and moved on from. This was a wonderful story and one I would definitely recommend to everyone.
Her Hopes and Dreams is a story about risking it all to get to that happily ever after. Noah has seen his share of turmoil on the battlefield, he doesn't expect to come to face to face with those same fears when he looks into a pair of beautiful yet scared eyes. Carrie doesn't trust as easily as she once would have. Her past has left her wary and determined to build a better life for her and her little girl. But her enticing neighbor is waylaying all of her plans and exploring all the possibilities. Terri Osburn is not as familiar to me but she delivers in Her Hopes and Dreams, a little bit fairy tale and a large amount of heart.
I would like to thank Netgalley and the Publisher for the ARC of "Her Hopes and Dreams" By Terri Osburn. I would recommend this romantic novel with some of todays" major problems discussed. The author discusses domestic abuse and Post traumatic stress disorder and the consequences on family, friends, and self esteem. The plot centers around the building of a shelter for battered women, and the characters involved.Getting help and having a strong support system is discussed. I look forward to reading other books about the characters and friends in this series.
Carrie and Noah are going to take you on a whirlwind of a ride. Noah and Carrie are both neighbors and have know each other for years. This book is going to take you through two really hard subject. PTSD and domestic violence are both major components in the story line. I loved this book and I loved how Noah fell in love with his neighbor and her little girl. They were meant to be a family and I am glad that had a secret matchmaker in their family. The end of the story left me in tears so you have been warned, grab the tissues.
This was my first trip to Ardent Spring but it won't be my last! Dealing with some dark issue without making the story to heavy takes seriously talent, and Terri Osburn has it! I laughed, I cried, I yelled at both the hero and heroine, and I absolutely fell in love with the beautiful family that is at the heart of this story.
I won this in one of goodreads giveaways. I couldn't wait to start right in to it and it didn't disappointment at all. A wonderful well written story of Carrie who has suffered through being domestic abuse from her now dead husband and Noah her new next door neighbor who is suffering from PTSD. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Osbourn stories!
This was the fourth book in Ardent Springs TN written by Terri Osburn. I have read them all and while I loved them all this one is my favorite. When I write a review I normally will tell you about the heroine and hero, and a bit about the story. This one, I think needs to be read on its own. I hope you all give it a chance and enjoy it as much as I did.
Her Hopes and Dreams
Carrie Farmer, single mom to Molly, working to support them. Victim of spousal abuse by her widowed husband. Slowly putting her life back together. She is in charge of having a shelter built by the construction company she works for so she can help other woman that like herself were being abused but felt like they had no way out. She has also sworn off men. Noah Winchester has come back from the war. He is beaten and battered and wants peace and quiet. Wants to be left alone since he feels he is better that way, he won't be able to hurt anyone. He has been through too much and battles demons in his mind.
Carrie and Noah live next door to each other. Neither seems to be very happy about that in the beginning, Carrie sees Noah as a very scary man, he is big, hairy and his eyes are clouded. He is the type of man she fears. Noah sees Carrie as a nosy neighbor butting in where she doesn't belong, but also sees shadows in her eyes and wonders what happened to her to put them there. He knows who she is, he knew her ex-husband.
With time and many struggles between the two of them these two form a bond. This story is about that journey and how they come out on the other end of it. It is one of the BEST books I have read. I found myself laughing, holding my breath, passing judgement on my favorite author, ( she really got me angry for parts of this story) and crying my eyes out. Yes I needed many tissues. I couldn't put this book down, I started it one hour before bedtime and finished it the next day. I had to find out what happened to these people. I love this entire series, this is the fourth book in it, but I must say Her Hopes and Dreams is my favorite. The subject matters, abusive relationships and PTSD, are real, and she covered them realistically, no candy coating and with just enough depth.
Terri Osburn never disappoints me but I feel with this book she reached into my heart with her words and held on tight.
Carrie has quite the history. She is a single mom, ex-wife, battered spouse and widow. She lives in a trailer out in the country. Her closest neighbor is an empty farmhouse. She is recovering from her abuse, trying to carve out a life for her and her daughter. She works as an office manager for a construction company. This same company is building a shelter for battered women, being overseen by Carrie and the non-profit board.
Noah is former military, dealing with PTSD. He returns home to the empty farmhouse next to Carrie. He is also her abusive husband’s friend. He’s determined to keep to himself because he is afraid of hurting someone as a result of his PTSD.
These two clash initially, then discover they are both battling demons that can’t be seen. Carrie is understandably slow to trust but seems to instinctively know she can trust Noah not to hurt her. Noah, who is initially obnoxious and rude, shows his protective, caring, sweet side. He’s really good with Molly, Carrie’s baby.
Carrie’s friends seem to too easily accept him in her life. I would think with her history they would have been a little more cautious, especially with his past reputation.
This is set in a small town, and they are all in each other’s pockets. It seems a little weird that Carrie and Lorelei are besties, and she and Spencer are good friends. Hated Kyra. Loved Noah’s mom, Lydia.
Lydia had the best line, “Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit!”
What happened with the drug trial? That part of the storyline just dropped off. Are we to assume it worked for him?
This is book 4 in the series but my first book by this author. Maybe if I had read them in order, some things wouldn’t have seemed as odd. This book definitely peaked my interest in the previous three books and I’m curious to see what comes next. Will Lenny leave Kyra? What happens next for Noah and Carrie? Will we see the final results for the Shelter?
Before I get into the story, I will have to warn you. This book contains a realistic description of PTSD, as suffered by a Veteran, and domestic violence, and the aftermaths of such abuse. So, if you are triggered easily, don't read this book.
Most contemporary romance novels are light in their subject matter, meddling mothers, class differences, or other obstacles finds the two main characters within the pages, keeping them apart until they finally get together. In this case, "Her Hopes And Dreams" does not do it's title justice because it does not only with the main character regaining faith in the possibility of relationship, and her ability to trust again - herself, and others - but also with the depth of nightmare that is PTSD for so many vets, who come home from war. While none of that takes away from the romance, it places it grounded more into a reality that is everyday life for many. One of those people being my own husband.
Despite weaving in this heavy subject matter into this romance novel, Terri Osborn managed to keep the novel light, friendly and uplifting, without sugar-coating what each of them went through, and what they are still going through. It had me laughing and crying, shaking my head, and agreeing whole-heartily.
With two well-developed main characters and a charming cast of side characters, this book is an overall winner for me. If you have read any other books of the Ardent Spring series before this one then you will be already familiar with Carrie, the female lead. I was not, this is my first book by the Author, and I am glad to see that it is easy to read as a stand alone book, actually, I was not aware that it was a part of a book series, until I finished reading it, and began my research on Terry Osborn.
Her Hopes And Dreams is book # 4 of the Ardent Springs Series. I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review.
(This review is based on the ARC provided by the publisher via Net Galley)
This is the fourth book in the Ardent Springs series, but it is the first book in that I have read in the series so I don't know if that might have affected my review. Once I started reading the book and found out that the female protagonist Carrie cheated on her husband I was just unable to get over it as I am totally against cheating, this in turn negatively affected the way I saw the book and characters. This is my personal hangup and not the book or the authors fault. The writing in the book was good and I enjoyed the dual point of view style because it helped the reader understand both characters. I enjoyed the story of overcoming PTSD as well as helping women in abusive marriages. At some points I did find Noah's character one dimensional and wished there was more depth, however I loved the secondary characters of all Carrie's friends because they were fun and added a lightness to the book that was much needed. The romance and chemistry was average and nothing special and left me wanting for something more. I do look foward to reading the previous books because I enjoyed those characters in this book.
and PTSD, not new topics by any means, but as written by Ms Osburn, they are terrifically real and emotionally charged. From the onset, Carrie captures your heart, while Noah engages your empathy for his sacrifices and the fallout he's left with. It was easy to form a bond with these characters, as written, they were real enough to leave a lasting impression.
With all the emotions this story generates, there lays within its lines gentle humor, compassion, and the love of family and friends. The author's depiction of the trials that Carrie and Noah experience on their way to overcoming the obstacles that tried to prevent them from their HEA, had me on the edge of my seat several times, heart racing as the drama unfolded. I was literally captivated by the imagery created that enhanced the experience, further defining the turmoil and heartbreak.
This book was provided by the Publisher and Netgalley, I am voluntarily providing my honest review.
I haven't read any of the other Arden Springs books, but I will have to get them now. I loved this story. I like Carrie and Noah. Noah is sure that he has met his neighbor before, then he remembers that she is the married woman his friend was dating. He can't abide a cheater. What Noah doesn't know is that after Carrie's divorce, she married Noah's friend and that he was very abusive to her. She figured that she deserved the abuse she got because of her previous marriage. Now her husband is dead and she is a single mother. She is through letting people walk all over her and judge her. She doesn't need someone like Noah looking down his nose at her. As they get to know each other, they realize they were wrong about a lot things.
I just have to say that I’ve loved all the books in the Ardent Springs series and Her Hopes and Dreams is no exception. This is Carrie’s story. She is a single mom to her adorable daughter, Molly. She used to be married to Spencer, but their marriage went downhill, after the death of their son. Then she got with the abusive jerk, Patch. Lorelei saves her from one of his beatings and they form a friendship, even though she’s now with Spencer. This book starts with Carrie getting a new, noisy neighbor, after Noah returns to his grandparent’s farm. He’s suffering from PTSD, after his service to our country and what he went through. Can two broken people heal one another or are they best just being neighbors? Grab your copy and get ready to wish you lived in this small town.
Nothing I love more than a strong man felled by the love of a good woman. Add a sweet baby into the mix and I'm a goner! This story is not all sweetness and light, though. Noah struggles with PTSD, and Carrie was a victim of spousal abuse. Their combined issues come to an explosive head when Carrie attempts to help another battered woman. I love the way Carrie was written, once a victim she is now a strong and empathetic advocate standing up for herself and protecting her baby. And I love that Noah recognizes he needs professional help before he can be a good enough man for Carrie. A heartfelt read, I loved it!
Her Hopes and Dreams is another love story from Ardent Springs. Although I liked the story this is my least favorite. There is nothing wrong with the story or the characters. Both Noah and Carrie are very likable sweet and easy to love. But for me the story was missing a special spark just like it was at the end with the letter. With more that in the story would be perfect. But I enjoyed reading it and was happy to read about Ardent Springs once again. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book for Netgelly
This book speaks to the heart! How can love help conquer nightmares, cast out fear, get help, protect and so much more! A man comes back from the war to find quiet and peace only to find a woman and child on a mission to help other battered women! A journey that brings love to them. A new hope. This is only only part of the story, many characters weave in and out and you'll find yourself becoming part of this family! You will enjoy this book.
* I received this book for free from a Goodreads giveaway. *
This book is full of good friends and has a lot of heart. While the story has PTSD and domestic abuse in it, it is still a heartwarming tale. I loved how good Noah was with the baby, it was truly sweet. This is the first book that I have read in this series and I would now like to go back and read the rest.
I was wondering when and who they were going to pair up with little Carrie, who has been through so much already. I think Terri Osburn chose the perfect person to put with Carrie and her daughter. But most importantly, it wasn't just about who would help heal Carrie. It's about our this match helps each other become whole together.
I love a good sappy romance story. I've enjoyed the whole series and was impressed with this one in particular. The author seamlessly wove in topics of domestics violence and PTSD. I enjoyed seeing Carrie blossom into a confident woman and I also loved keeping up with the previous couples of Arden Springs.
This book was a wonderful addition to the series. Nice to see Carrie find a guy worth givivng her time to. Noah was exactly what Carrie didn' t know she needed and her for him. Glad that he got out of his own way. Another job well done Terri Osburn.
