About the author

1931ம் ஆண்டு செப்டம்பர் 22ந் தேதி, ஆந்திர மாநிலத்தில் உள்ள சிகந்தராபாத்தில் பிறந்தவர். இயற்பெயர் ஜ. தியாகராஜன். தமது இருபத்தொன்றாவது வயதில் (தந்தையின் மறைவுக்குப் பின்) குடும்பத்தினருடன் சென்னைக்குக் குடியேறி, ஜெமினி ஸ்டுடியோவில் மக்கள் தொடர்புத் துறையில் பணியாற்றத் தொடங்கினார். அப்போது அகில இந்திய வானொலி நடத்திய ஒரு நாடகப் போட்டிக்காக "அன்பின் பரிசு" என்னும் நாடகத்தை எழுதினார். அதுவே அசோகமித்திரனின் முதல் படைப்பு. 1954ம் ஆண்டு வானொலியில் அந்நாடகம் ஒலிபரப்பானது.

அசோகமித்திரனின் முதல் சிறுகதை "நாடகத்தின் முடிவு". 1957ம் ஆண்டு கலைமகளில் இது பிரசுரமானது. கலைமகளில் அவரது இரண்டாவது சிறுகதை "விபத்து" பிரசுரமானதையடுத்து, மணிக்கொடி கி.ரா. மூலம் ந. பிச்சமூர்த்தியின் அறிமுகமும், அவர் மூலம் "எழுத்து" பத்திரிகைத் தொடர்பும் கிடைத்தது.

சுமார் நாற்பதாண்டு காலத்துக்கும் மேலாகத் தமிழின் மிக முக்கியமான புனைகதை எழுத்தாளர்களுள் ஒருவராக அறியப்படும் அசோகமித்திரன், அமெரிக்கா, சிங்கப்பூர், ஜெர்மனி, இலங்கை ஆகிய நாடுகளுக்கு அழைப்புகளின் பேரில் இலக்கியச் சுற்றுப்பயணம் மேற்கொண்டிருக்கிறார். அவரது பல படைப்புகள், பல இந்திய அயல் மொழிகளில் மொழியாக்கம் பெற்றிருக்கின்றன. அப்பாவின் சிநேகிதர்' என்கிற சிறுகதைத் தொகுப்புக்காக, அசோகமித்திரனுக்கு 1996ம் ஆண்டு சாகித்ய அகாதமி விருது வழங்கப்பட்டது.

Somu says this at the end of the novel and a casual reading of the novel may make us say the same about the novel itself. Seemingly disconnected events,poetry,lectures on Tolstoy all add up to a riveting reading experience. Some events separately read as world-class short stories.A new genre of storytelling by the master Asokamitran.

Seemingly disconnected events of different people in the form of essay, poem, prose, story. It's a new style of writing a novel. Runs through Tolstoy, Gandhi, emergency, Indira Gandhi, Kamaraj, voting, a freedom fighter, and typical Asokamithiran's lower middle class people.

Stunning!

Just like any other Ashokamitran novel the prose is deceptively simple. Then one spots layer after layer after layer. Masterclass.

The spoiler is that this book gives a crazy hangover and makes one incessantly wonder about this ingenious writing style of ashokamitran. I'm a huge fan now. In mathematics there is a technique called partial least square regression which helps find a linearized pattern in nonlinear data. Ashokamitran's inru is a book which finds this linear connect about human life and the importance of present tense - the time which runs on a razor edge and yet demands one to behave calmly and he does this by throwing nonlinear events and stories. I'm still mesmerized with the stories interwoven in this book. It starts with a poem, then a speech on Tolstoy and then another speech about Tolstoy. Later ashokamitran talks about the real estate required for a human being in life - he discusses about the most invaluable real estate - time, age, longevity. While talking about time he shares a poetry which emphasizes the importance of present. This finds a connect in the next chapter which is titled what we ought to do- which has 3 situations, one where nobody is interested in your opinion about what one needs to do, one where one doesn't do what one is ought to do and then a story where one cannot do anything but live in fear and expect help. The next story is titled reincarnation but it's not about reincarnation instead it's about the time when one decides to step out of the razor edge called present and give up. The next chapter's title actually connects to the fact why previous chapter was called reincarnation since the next chapter is "what can we do now." This explains what the society does about the death that happened in the chapter reincarnation and how it reacts to that incident. This chapter also coincidentally shares politics with philosophy and some key events that occurred during emergency. The next chapter is about what happened after - which explains a story of a political activist and his feeling for regret of not focusing on his personal life is kindled by a question asked by his friends mother. Decoding Ashokamitran is a treat and reading inru was a beautiful experience. The unique thing about his style is that his characters are very ordinary people but the plot, the philosophy and the description of milieu is so musical - to give an analogy its like a Urdu ghazal performance which reaches its pinnacle of beauty not because of the poetry but due to the person singing it and the music which accompanies the song. Still madly in love with the last line in the book - "meaning", the more you search for it the more difficult it becomes to find it ...

இந்தியாவில் எமர்ஜென்சி அறிவிக்கப்பட்ட நிலையில் நான் பிறக்கவே இல்லை. அதை பற்றி அதிகம் தெரியாது என கூட சொல்லலாம். ஆனால் அதை பற்றி அறிய யோசிக்க வைத்த புத்தகமாக இன்று உள்ளது. எமர்ஜென்சி காலத்தில் பல விதமான சாமன்ய மனிதர்களின் வாழ்க்கை எப்படி பிரச்சனைக்குள்ளானது. மக்கள் அரசியல் நிலைப்பாடு எப்படி இருந்தது. அவர்கள் எப்படிப்பட்ட கஷ்ட்டத்திற்கு உள்ளானார்கள். நெருக்கடிக்கு பிறகு அவர்கள் வாழ்க்கை எப்படி இருந்தது. நெருக்கடி நிலை நீங்கிய போது அதை அவர்கள் இன்னொரு சுதந்திர தினம் போல் கொண்டாடினர் என அசோகமித்திரன் சொல்வதன் மூலம் நம்மால் அதன் தீவிரத்தை அறிய முடியும் என நினைக்கிறேன்.

"இன்று" by அசோகமித்திரன் ஒரு அமைதியான, ஆனால் ஆழமான உள்விழிப்புணர்வை உருவாக்கும் நாவல். அவரது மற்ற படைப்புகளைப் போலவே, இந்த புத்தகமும் சாதாரண வாழ்க்கையின் ஏழ்மை, தனிமை, மனித மனத்தின் நுட்பமான உணர்வுகளை ஆழமாகக் கூறுகிறது. கதையின் நடை நேர்த்தியாகவும் மென்மையாகவும் இருந்து, ஒவ்வொரு சம்பவமும் வாசகர்களை சிறிது நேரம் நிறுத்தி சிந்திக்க வைக்கும்.

அசோகமித்திரனின் எழுத்து எளிமையானதாக இருந்தாலும், அதன் பின்னணி ஆழமான வாழ்வியலின் உண்மைகளை வெளிக்கொண்டு வருகிறது. "இன்று" ஒரு நாளின் நிகழ்வுகளைச் சொல்லிக்கொண்டு, வாழ்க்கையின் பெரியப் பயணத்தை நம்மை உணர்த்துகிறது. மிகுந்த யதார்த்தமும் உள்விழிப்பும் நிறைந்த ஒரு படைப்பு!

Okay. I admit. I didn't get this novel at all. I understand each chapter, but what is the connection? So, is it a collection of short stories or was there any relation between each chapter I missed. But, it was interesting to read nevertheless.
